The World Cup takes a break on Friday for the first time in over a fortnight, with the round of 16 commencing on Saturday afternoon.

The lull in action is a welcome respite for Fantasy managers as serious thought can be given to what is effectively a compulsory wildcard, with both McDonald’s FIFA and Fantasy iTeam offering unlimited transfers between the culmination of the group stage and the start of the knockout rounds.

Although the round of 16 fixtures will be the prime concern, Fantasy managers ought to take the quarter-finals into consideration given that only three free transfers are permitted (any more will cost points/credits) before they begin.

READ NEXT: The complete guide to set-pieces and penalties for World Cup Fantasy knockout stages

Up to four players can be selected from one country in both Fantasy games at the last 16 stage, though some Fantasy bosses may wish to spread their selections across several nations given the restrictions on transfers before the quarter-finals begin.

Fantasy managers will have already noticed the price rises – and drops – in both our featured World Cup games, though in McDonald’s FIFA at least the allotted budget increases from £100m to £105m for these knockout rounds.

Players such as Cristiano Ronaldo (£12.1m), Harry Kane (£11.1m), Diego Costa (£9.1m), Christian Eriksen (£9.1m), Philippe Coutinho (£9.1m), Denis Cheryshev (£5.7m), Andreas Granqvist (£5.1m), Diego Godin (£5.6m) and Fernando Muslera (£5.6m) have all increased in price in McDonald’s FIFA, though no player has risen more than £0.2m.

Lionel Messi (£11.9m), Olivier Giroud (£8.9m), Willian (£8.4m), Dele Alli (£8.9m), Nicolas Otamendi (£5.9m) and Kyle Walker (£5.9m) are among the big names who have suffered a price drop, meanwhile.

Members can read on for this round-up of the Opta data from the group stages. The data itself is available to members as part of their yearly subscription and obtainable immediately after the end of each World Cup match.

Good luck then. I just find a wingback which is down as a midfielder costing 6.5 is bad value for money

    Does this look ok:

    Costa - Kane - Kaku

    Muslera
    Stones, Ramos, Granqvist, Meunier
    Isco, Modric, Coutinho
    Lukaku, Kane, Hazard

    Mvogo, Lovren, Inui, Gazinsky

I don't have BB or WC hence why I'm considering going with fodder on the bench.

It's a risk but feel like a strong 15 is pointless unless you still have BB. I'm considering maybe upgrading just one more on the bench.

Just throwing this out there for consideration/inspiration. Without a WC, this is what's making most sense to me right now (with a bench boost):

    Costa Lukaku Mbappe
    Isco Modric Iniesta Quintero Couts
    Muenier Miranda Akanji Granqvist Trippier
    Pickford Kawashima

0.4 behind. Could do Trippier to Pique?

Argentina are shocking at the back, and also very slow. France look disjointed but I'm feeling confident about a few goals at least. And, yes, he'd be my only Day 1 player.

Cheers for the feedback. Pique or K-Trip feels like a nice thing to think about for a day.

Fixture dates and captaincy options are really swaying my selection choices....
Im obviously aware of the benefits of playing the fixtures/dates and having captaincy options for them but is there a real danger of getting blindsighted by this and missing out on the best players/points?
    What you guys think?
    Might be over thinking this....

    1. AndyCook
      8 years, 1 month ago

Yes. Get the best players, late captain options you will probably never get to unless you take big risks. Once I have 6 I stick generally so Kane for example probably less worthwhile for me as a nice last day captain

      • 10 Years

It's nice to have captaincy options every day and you do need a decent spread but don't let it make you pick a worse player over one you think will do well

Surprised Kane is so popular. At that price he surely needs a good chance of a couple of returns to be worth it and playing on the last day you are unlikely to get to captaining him either. Thoughts?

Do you have WC for next round? If not I'd be cautious about going into this one with a single GK unless you're confident BEL will make it a long way into the tourney!

I don't have my WC, I'm confident they'll beat Japan and after that I have 5 transfers. Any sub keeper would be unlikely to make the semis. I'm confused that you want me to have as many players who can go far as possible but are recommending a Japanese player

France have been handed a tough game, even if Argentina are shaky at the back, hard to think of a player who is a standout goalscorer for that team. Hazard is very tempting but not sure if Lukaku & Hazard is a bit OTT on Belgium attack - maybe Hazard in for Lukaku?

Stock up on England players. Easy route to the final. Ignore the haters.

    Granqvist, Meunier, Boyata, Carvajal, Strinic
Iniesta, Isco, Modric, Linhard, C. Sanchez
    Hazard, Suarez, Griezmann

Are you just gonna not pick Brazilians vs Mexico? I mean, if Mexico win you're in great shape compared to the rest of us, otherwise you're ignoring probably the best fixture in the whole next round.

Do Brazil really outweigh Mexico that much? Ive been avoiding Brazil for the funds, and the amount of firepower it’s hard to pick the right one. But I’m listening lol

I have somewhat similar team, RRodriguez and Carvajal instead of Miranda and Ramos. Lukaku instead of Ney

    RMT

    Alisson Hassen
Miranda Meunier Carvajal Maguire R. Rod
    Isco Coutinho Modric Quintero Sanchez
    Neymar Lukaku Mbappe

    Captains - Mbappe > Isco > Neymar > R. Rod

Just feel Costa is so much better a pick than Mbappe. I see the captaincy argument, but not convinced Mbappe is reliable source of points
