The World Cup takes a break on Friday for the first time in over a fortnight, with the round of 16 commencing on Saturday afternoon.

The lull in action is a welcome respite for Fantasy managers as serious thought can be given to what is effectively a compulsory wildcard, with both McDonald’s FIFA and Fantasy iTeam offering unlimited transfers between the culmination of the group stage and the start of the knockout rounds.

Although the round of 16 fixtures will be the prime concern, Fantasy managers ought to take the quarter-finals into consideration given that only three free transfers are permitted (any more will cost points/credits) before they begin.

READ NEXT: The complete guide to set-pieces and penalties for World Cup Fantasy knockout stages

Up to four players can be selected from one country in both Fantasy games at the last 16 stage, though some Fantasy bosses may wish to spread their selections across several nations given the restrictions on transfers before the quarter-finals begin.

Fantasy managers will have already noticed the price rises – and drops – in both our featured World Cup games, though in McDonald’s FIFA at least the allotted budget increases from £100m to £105m for these knockout rounds.

Players such as Cristiano Ronaldo (£12.1m), Harry Kane (£11.1m), Diego Costa (£9.1m), Christian Eriksen (£9.1m), Philippe Coutinho (£9.1m), Denis Cheryshev (£5.7m), Andreas Granqvist (£5.1m), Diego Godin (£5.6m) and Fernando Muslera (£5.6m) have all increased in price in McDonald’s FIFA, though no player has risen more than £0.2m.

Lionel Messi (£11.9m), Olivier Giroud (£8.9m), Willian (£8.4m), Dele Alli (£8.9m), Nicolas Otamendi (£5.9m) and Kyle Walker (£5.9m) are among the big names who have suffered a price drop, meanwhile.

Members can read on for this round-up of the Opta data from the group stages. The data itself is available to members as part of their yearly subscription and obtainable immediately after the end of each World Cup match.

It's very complicated for the early hours.

Clean sheet for a dedender looks mean. I'd not concentrate cash there except for Rod and/or Gran is my first observation.

No. Brazil likely to go all the way and Neymar will be a big part of that. It's just that Lukaku is more likely to outscore him given that Belgium could thrash Japan, Lukaku's physicality will likely be too much for them and their goalkeeper is dodgier than my local chipper's curry.

    Settled on this:

    Allisson / 3.9
    Lovren / Granqvist / RRod / Meunier / Carvajajaja
    Modric / Isco / Lingard / Quintero / C.Sanchez
    Kane / Lukaku / Neymar

No WC. Thought process: Doubled up on teams likely to progress; Spain, Brazil, Croatia, Belgium. Have also doubled up on England and Colombia given the favourable quarter-final fixture either would have. 2 of my 3 free transfers will be used getting rid of the losers. Have only doubled up on Spain and Croatia as they would play each other in QF.

Fancy a 0-0 or 1-0 in Sweden vs Switzerland, both penalty takers covered. Will use final remaining transfer to get rid of the loser.

Main Problem: No players playing on the first day (Uruguay/Portugal/France/Argentina)

Thanks. Lingard to Sanchez is one I'll consider, Lingard seems to be a key figure going forward for England and I feel obligated to keep the faith after his Round 2 performance but it would definitely be nice to have a player for Day 1 though.

I was weighing up Luakaku and Hazard earlier and if Senegal had progressed I would have gone for Hazard, just feel like Lukaku will dominate the Japan defense. Thanks for the suggestions.

    Subasic (Muslera)
    Meunier Carvajal Granqvist Maguire (Dalsgaard)
    Coutinho Modric Isco Quintero (Sanchez)
    Costa Lukaku Messi

Going all out attack for this team. I fancy there will be less clean sheets and more goals so want more mids with scoring potential.

    Ochoa (punt), Olsen
    Granqvist, Varela, Strinic, Lovren, Mojica
    Isco, Modric, Pogba, Coutinho, Claesson
    Costa, Griezmann, Hazard

I like catriems thoughts. Double up on Spain and Croatia (tried too but they had cheap defenders) as they are playing each other most likely in quarters. Triple up on Swiss for clean sheet potential plus weak Swiss defense after yellow cards.

What do you think? Be honest!

Two goalkeepers who could easily go out at price points where a straight swap isn’t easy. Varela might not start depending on what formation they go with.

I currently have Fagner in my current draft to enable Hazard over Griezmann, is he too risky when Danilo is fit?

I would think he'd keep his spot given he's played well in 2 games and managers usually like to only make enforced changes to a settled team when competing at tournaments unless thing are going catastrophically bad. If I got Grizzy, then I can get Granny/Lovren but I think Hazard is likely to bring in more points.

    1. AndyCook
      8 years, 1 month ago

Guessing no WC? At least with Tite is that he basically says his side straight up in advance so a surprise might be unlikely but equally he has his favourites e.g. Jesus and performances tend not the shake that up much. I don’t like the idea of enforced swaps when you will have players knocked out so I would avoid personally but might bw a risk worth taking based on how many of your players would be at a real risk of going out

      1. We Will Klopp you
        • 9 Years

Yeah, no WC. Cheers, he's basically my 4th def, with pavard my 5th so there's less risk there. All of my players in my starting 11 are from countries considered favourites, it's only Claesson's match which falls under the 50/50 banner, guess it's worth the risk as I can see Belgium going the distance.

Depends on how much you value the midfielder positions. I'm looking to prioritise my forwards and so can only really afford 2/3 top midfielders (Isco/ Mod/ Cout).

The Neymar funds could perhaps be rethought unless you see Brazil going the distance. Belgium and Brazil play on the same day re captaincy. On the flip side of things if people don't have Neymar and Brazil do get to the semis, other people will be using up transfers to get Neymar into their team so you'd have the advantage.

It's a transfer amnesty between group and knockout stages. Essentially a second wildcard for everyone.

As you still have your wildcard, you are in a great position as whatever mistakes you make can be remedied ahead of semi or quarter final!

So after some helpful points from you guys, I think this is a great goalkeeper setup:

    Akinfeev, 6.0m

    Here’s why:

Russia play Sunday, so a cheap 5.0 punt early on that could potentially get loads of saves and finish with 5-6 points. Even might get a penalty save to sweeten the deal then doesn’t even need a clean sheet. Then when they lose you transfer him out for a 4.0 and get 1m to spend elsewhere.

6.0m will be a guaranteed keeper like Alisson or Courtois that will make it at least to the next round. So a transfer won’t be needed.

This is probably the safest bet with a good punt option where anything can happen. 5-6 points is good enough to stick on regardless if you think your 6.0m keeper will get a clean sheet.

    Just a thought!

    1. AndyCook
      8 years, 1 month ago

In that case I’d just get a 4.0 back up and save the transfer and hope your first choice gets a clean sheet. More likely than 5-6 from Akinfeev and save a million

Quite like it but I think I’d have coutinho over KDB, Silva over Miranda?

Surely not too mental to forego anyone from day one? I can’t really call the FRA ARG game and I reckon URU POR will be low scoring

    Your semi finalists?

    I'm thinking:
    Belgium
    England
    Spain
    France

Possible, bookies certainly favour them but I reckon Belgium have a slightly better team and with Neymar not at his best & Jesus not firing, I think Belgium will beat them.

nah that defense is way too slow and old and prone to mistakes, have you seen Otamendi play in the PL?
