The World Cup takes a break on Friday for the first time in over a fortnight, with the round of 16 commencing on Saturday afternoon.

The lull in action is a welcome respite for Fantasy managers as serious thought can be given to what is effectively a compulsory wildcard, with both McDonald’s FIFA and Fantasy iTeam offering unlimited transfers between the culmination of the group stage and the start of the knockout rounds.

Although the round of 16 fixtures will be the prime concern, Fantasy managers ought to take the quarter-finals into consideration given that only three free transfers are permitted (any more will cost points/credits) before they begin.

READ NEXT: The complete guide to set-pieces and penalties for World Cup Fantasy knockout stages

Up to four players can be selected from one country in both Fantasy games at the last 16 stage, though some Fantasy bosses may wish to spread their selections across several nations given the restrictions on transfers before the quarter-finals begin.

Fantasy managers will have already noticed the price rises – and drops – in both our featured World Cup games, though in McDonald’s FIFA at least the allotted budget increases from £100m to £105m for these knockout rounds.

Players such as Cristiano Ronaldo (£12.1m), Harry Kane (£11.1m), Diego Costa (£9.1m), Christian Eriksen (£9.1m), Philippe Coutinho (£9.1m), Denis Cheryshev (£5.7m), Andreas Granqvist (£5.1m), Diego Godin (£5.6m) and Fernando Muslera (£5.6m) have all increased in price in McDonald’s FIFA, though no player has risen more than £0.2m.

Lionel Messi (£11.9m), Olivier Giroud (£8.9m), Willian (£8.4m), Dele Alli (£8.9m), Nicolas Otamendi (£5.9m) and Kyle Walker (£5.9m) are among the big names who have suffered a price drop, meanwhile.

Members can read on for this round-up of the Opta data from the group stages. The data itself is available to members as part of their yearly subscription and obtainable immediately after the end of each World Cup match.

I have the same team. Just Olsen for Uzoho, Trippier for Lovren, Shaq for Inui and Hazard Rebic for Kane Costa. I like you forwards better. But somehow wanted to get Hazard in.

    Here's my early draft:

    Allison, Subasic
    Granqvist, Carvajal, Stones, Trippier, Meunier
    Coutinho, Isco, Claesson, Inui, Sanchez
    Neymar, Lukaku, Kane

    0.5 itb

Since I have no WC left I'm going for 3 lightweight mids to leave on the bench for later as I won't have enough transfers to replace all those knocked out. Plus they provide some cover for my Belgium/England picks. Double England defense looks a bit weird but I'm liking their QF match (if they make it there).

Is that Carlos Sanches from Colombia? If so I would try to upgrade that
Meunier is on YC just so you know
I don't know about double England defense I fancy Colombia to score
Maybe downgrade a keeper to free up some dinero?

Yeah that's Carlos Sanchez from Colombia. Could be any 4.4 but at least he plays to perhaps replace a player who got 1 or less.

It's not so much about England CS but their attacking potential. Stones already scored 3 and was really close to 3rd and Trippier on all set pieces. And if they make it to next round I think they'll have the biggest chances to get a CS.

Downgrading a keeper to 4.0 (didn't get Hassan - stupid!) is an option too.

Yeah, but I feel CS are a bit random. None of top 4 sides most likely to keep a CS managed to do so.

Considering him over Claesson. Like I said, Sanchez is only an enabler to give me more funds. I'll leave him on the bench forever once he's knocked out and I'll have 1.2m more to spend.

What do you think of this for an early draft? BB and no WC

                Muslera/Sommer
                Carvajal/Fagner//Strinic/Granvist/Sakai
                Modric/Isco/Coutinho/Quintero/Shaq
                Griezmann/Costa/Lukaku

Maybe try to fit in Trippier or someone else in that backline, thinking just keep Sakai as fodder
Maybe change forwards or just keep as is?

What will you do if Swiss and another favorite gets knocked out? Leave expensive Sommer and Shaq on bench?

There's a bigger chance of defender getting a CS than midfielder getting any returns, so I'd upgrade Sakai and get in a 4.4 mid or Inui instead.

                  But the rest looks good.

Also Fanger...I'm not too sure about him. Danilo is back in training and even if he doesn't start next game he will be back eventually.

yeah true, I had Inui and upgraded.
The reason for 2 good keepers is the BB otherwise I'd just keep Hassen which I still have. Haven't confirmed my switches yet.
Yeah guess I'll sort out the back line

Oh right, BB, yeah that changes things. Still not sure about Sommer, but maybe because I had him this round and he failed miserably. 😀 He'll likely drop in price too and with no keepers in that sort of price range you might be forced to keep him. Difficult choice :/

Does it matter if both keepers go through as long as you have one good one?
All the ones on that price range are just like Sommer, they may not go through, next closest is Subasic, which I could try to upgrade to

For BB it does yeah. I've gotten 1 point from mine but if both your keepers get a CS you get 6+ at the minimum.

With that being said, not sure it's worth basing your team around.

Sorry, misunderstood the question. It's not important they both go through the next round, as long as you are not bothered by 5m sitting on your bench as you're unlikely to replace him.

No I meant for after this round, like let's say Sommer goes out but he got me a good return this round. For transfers purposes later on is it important to go with a keeper you think wont get knocked out? Cuz most who aren't BBing are going with just fodder like Hassen.

No, you can survive without a keeper for next 3 rounds. And Sommer is unlikely to get any returns if he gets knocked out, unless he saved a penalty or the game ends 0-0. Then again he could still progress and you'll have a keeper for next round, albeit against England. Like I said, difficult. :/

He plays upfront behind 3 striker, he is on pens, and shares set pieces with Rakitic, also he has world class long range shot which he proven many times before. You can go differential with Rakitic if you prefer.

    Any thoughts on this lot?

    Muslera, Sommer
    Miranda, Lovren, Valera, Carvajal, Sakai
    Coutinho, Modric, Isco, Shakiri, Inui
    Kane, Lukaku, Costa

The plan is free WC, then WC, and BB/MC on semi/final, not sure which when.

    Thanks!

I would honestly go hazard over lukaku. They will choke Lukaku out freeing up tons of space for hazard. And he’ll be deadly with space (goals or assists).

Instead of Shaqiri and Inui I would go Lingard and Claesson by downgrading Sommer to a fodder.

Please RMT (I chose all very attacking defenders):

    Muslera, Bench Fodder
    Granqvist, Ramos, Strinic, Trippier, Meunier
    Isco, Modric, Coutinho, Quintero, Claesson
    Kane, Hazard, Griezmann

Then get some dead weight to keep on the bench for later rounds when you have to focus your FTs on the expensive players that were eliminated. If you have to keep Quintero or Claesson on your bench you will have 1m+ less to spend on other players.

Good team to Bench Boost for this round, or save for later?

    Muslera Schmeichel
    Carvajal Miranda Trippier Granqvist Akanji
    Isco Coutinho Modric Quintero Inui
    Hazard Kane Griezmann

While you most likely won't be able to field a team of 15 starters in the next rounds you can still profit from BB by having two GKs that get a CS. It's a chip worth a few points at best anyway (I've actually seen some lose points because of it).

"While you most likely won't be able to field a team of 15 starters in the next rounds"

why cant i? gambled on the right team/s to win and a good chance you get more then enough players in the next round. the only downside is yellow(clears in semis) or red cards or unexpected injuries.

Well I haven't seen your team but you are likely to field some 5.5s at best if you want a full team of starters this round and I'm sure they won't all make it to the next round. And the big teams don't have players at that price to replace with.

If you have four good options for R16 it's one of the next 3 rounds. If not, use it now.

    All chips intact

    Alisson Olsen
    Meunier RRodriguez Granquist Trippier Carvajal
    Isco Modric Coutinho Quintero Shaq
    Lukaku Hazard Rebic

How does that sound? A bit confused between RRodriguez and Strinic. Feel not having a Croat defender might hurt. Also Trippier is a hit or a miss.

Croatia should shut Denmark out and also Sweden v Switzerland looks to be very tight with few goals here as both defences are decent. I'm going Strinic from Croat defence myself and Granq

        Changed:

        Alisson Subasic
        Meunier Rodriguez Granquist Trippier Carvajal
        Isco Coutinho Quintero Shaq Inui
        Hazard Costa Lukaku

Needed a Croatia defense so got Subasic. Downgraded Modric to Inui and upgraded Rebic to Costa

Thoughts on this as a first draft? Trying to get a few differentials in..

    Pickford - 3.9
    Ramos - Carvajal - Dalsgaard - Maguire - Akanji
    Coutinho - Paulinho - Pogba - Isco - Inui
    Kane - Costa - Lukaku

playing around. only possible differentials I can see are upfront...

I need to take QF (c) in consideration since I'm Supersizing(c) this round. That's why I like Pogba.

Who are the five most essential players? I’m currently on Kane, Ramos, Isco, Coutinho.

    Thanks guys!

    First draft

    Alisson, Subasic
    Trippier Miranda Ramos Godin Lovren
Isco Modric Quintero Inui C. Sanchez
    Neymar Hazard Kane

thoughts? No WC left, so I won't probably bother replace Quintero/Sanchez if they go out, or should I try strength the midfield?
