The World Cup takes a break on Friday for the first time in over a fortnight, with the round of 16 commencing on Saturday afternoon.

The lull in action is a welcome respite for Fantasy managers as serious thought can be given to what is effectively a compulsory wildcard, with both McDonald’s FIFA and Fantasy iTeam offering unlimited transfers between the culmination of the group stage and the start of the knockout rounds.

Although the round of 16 fixtures will be the prime concern, Fantasy managers ought to take the quarter-finals into consideration given that only three free transfers are permitted (any more will cost points/credits) before they begin.

READ NEXT: The complete guide to set-pieces and penalties for World Cup Fantasy knockout stages

Up to four players can be selected from one country in both Fantasy games at the last 16 stage, though some Fantasy bosses may wish to spread their selections across several nations given the restrictions on transfers before the quarter-finals begin.

Fantasy managers will have already noticed the price rises – and drops – in both our featured World Cup games, though in McDonald’s FIFA at least the allotted budget increases from £100m to £105m for these knockout rounds.

Players such as Cristiano Ronaldo (£12.1m), Harry Kane (£11.1m), Diego Costa (£9.1m), Christian Eriksen (£9.1m), Philippe Coutinho (£9.1m), Denis Cheryshev (£5.7m), Andreas Granqvist (£5.1m), Diego Godin (£5.6m) and Fernando Muslera (£5.6m) have all increased in price in McDonald’s FIFA, though no player has risen more than £0.2m.

Lionel Messi (£11.9m), Olivier Giroud (£8.9m), Willian (£8.4m), Dele Alli (£8.9m), Nicolas Otamendi (£5.9m) and Kyle Walker (£5.9m) are among the big names who have suffered a price drop, meanwhile.

Members can read on for this round-up of the Opta data from the group stages. The data itself is available to members as part of their yearly subscription and obtainable immediately after the end of each World Cup match.

9.4k rank and only made one transfer up till now. Quite happy with sticking with my original picks. Only question is stay with Gazinsky or upgrade to a 7.1m? Have played BB and MC, but still got WC.

    Schmeichel
    Miranda Godin Meunier
    Eriksen Coutinho Modric Gazinsky
    Jesus Cavani(c) Lukaku

    3.9 Quintero Granqvist R.Rodriguez

    Subasic - Olsen
    Godin - Ramos - Alderwireld - T.Silva - Miranda

1000%. He captained Brazil last game. Why do people think random players in the defense will get rotated? If they started last game and it was their first team, they'll play again with 99% certainty bar injury.

          *Bar injury.

Danilo's return from injury might mean he starts but I wouldn't be surprised if Fagner just keeps his place for the rest of the WC. He's been good.

His major tournament record is very impressive though and he's on penalties for France. Hard to pass up. I also prefer him to Mbappe because it's easier to change him if things don't work out.

    After some changes

    Muslera - Olsen
    Meunier - Miranda - Carvajal - Trip - Strinic
    Isco - Modric - Coutinho - Claesson - Inui

Now I'm wondering if maybe I should downgrade more: 2nd GK, 5th def and use the funds elsewhere...

Maybe I'm being an idiot but this rule on player valuation confuses me....

"Original player prices will remain the same until the group stage (Round 3). Upon completion of the group stage, player prices will change depending on performances."

This part inparicular is confusing me - "Upon completion of the group stage"
Does this mean during last round of group stages or from Round 3 "onwards" into the tournament?

Player pool still bigger. Hoping that a defender might pop up with a CS & Goal while most will capt the big guns.

Current draft, with WC and using BB:
    Courtois Subasic
    Trippier Carvajal Miranda RRod Granqvist
    Isco Modric Quintero Claesson Inui
    Hazard Kane Neymar

I don't really like the mids but I don't see any other option apart from:
    A) Trippier Claesson Neymar to
    B) Maguire Coutinho Costa

Don't really mind the change in england defence, but I really do think Neymar is due and Costa will flop. However, Costa+Coutinho looks much better...

How do you think this squad shapes up? Would you pick Modric Maguire over Rakitic Trippier?

Sakai and Gazinsky really bench fodder enablers. Used WC.

    Alisson Olsen
Trippier Thiago Silva Granqvist Carvajal Sakai
    Isco Coutinho Rakitic Lingard Gazinsky
    Kane Mbappe Hazard

    1. JLAEST

Don't really like the bench fodder strategy, but apart from that it looks quite good. I'd just do TSilva > Miranda and Rakitic > Modric and be done.

If you're going fodder route, you need 3.9m goalie and 4.4m mid.

I think defense is where the most value is in the latter rounds. Having a 3.9m fodder in defense hurts you quite badly.

    RMT

    De Gea / Kawashima
    Trippier / Carvajal / Miranda / Meunier / Akanji
    Isco / Modric / Coutinho / Claesson / Inui
    Costa / Kane / Hazard

    0.4m to spare
Fodder bench, apart from Claesson at 5.5m. And I think Akanji is reasonable at 4.5m.

    Q1: Hazard over Lukaku?
Q2: Godin (5.6m) over one of the defenders?

I like your team but I'd listen to people's advice on Quintero over Carrasco and would save myself some money on Courtois for a keeper with less challenging fixtures.

Godin for me over Varela until we see how they line up.

Personally, I'm going without Brazil. At this stage it's just too hard (or even harder) to predict where the goals are going to come from.

Doesn't hurt to keep some money back either. There are still decent cheap options.

Wait what!? There's no manual subs anymore? Oh wow, that changes everything. Thanks for letting me know!

No there are. He's just saying that it's impossible to get all 15 playing players up until the final. And he's right.

There are! But you will not able to make team of 15 playing players till the final, considering the volume of FTs and prices it is not possible

There are, but the funds to have a good bench are very limited. Maybe not this round but most likely the next one.

That's exactly why we're picking him. There are no other options at his price. He's staying on the bench.

He becomes fodder after. I prefer Sanchez personally. Does the same thing and is 0.2m cheaper.

Same, but I've gone for both. If I have 3 other players knocked out they will fit into my bench nicely.

There's a decent chance Inui is involved if Japan score though. Sanchez is far more likely to get booked than he is to score/assist. If you really need the 0.2 fair enough. But Inui is a far better pick.

Sanchez is such an awful pick.

He is, but he's the only 4.4 that starts. I'd rather have a 2 pointer to replace someone who got 1 or less than someone who doesn't play at all.

This game is not about having 15 active players, its about getting max points from 11, if you can do it with 11 even with no bench, its fine

Yeah, if you can do that then you're a genius, but having 15 active players massively boosts your chances of 11 of them doing well

I get your point but I try to look at this as realistic as possible and Id rather focus on starting 11

i believe 15 players is only useful at semi final and final, when you cant change your captain. IF you have think your captained ronaldo or griezman will get you 2 points. You will change captain and your 4 solid bench is useless

Ok, received quite a few responses! I'm trying to get my head round the other side of the argument, and can understand where you're coming from, but it just makes so much more logical sense to me to have a complete team of players, all of whom have a chance at points. It was a better choice for the group stages, and we have enough money now to do it decently with this round and the quarters at least. Gonna have to agree to disagree

Thing is, the final is still the same four teams from the semis, not just two finalists, so yes it should be easy enough to plot a decent squad if you plan properly.

    Muslera / Pickford
    Meunier / Miranda / RRod / Lovren / Granqvist
    Modric / Isco / Quintero / Claesson / Cheryshev
    Neymar / Lukaku / Costa

BB now and WC after this round.

Modric. Upgrade your defense. Can't have a 3.9m fodder in defense when there's so much value in that position.

Putting 1.5m into defense gets you a lot further than doing that in midfield.

Hi guys! Playing on a local site so rules are slightly different, but point structure the same. 4 transfers per fixture.

    Thoughts on this:
    Ronaldo + Lewandowski + Eriksen + Hector —> Lukaku + Kane + Quintero + Strinic

    That would give me:

    Lukaku - Kane - Cavani
    Isco - Coutinho - Quintero
    Ramos - Marcelo - Meunier - Strinic
    Pickford

Any advice is highly appreciated. Thanks guys!

I would - more likely to get to the next round, though chances of attacking returns are quite slim. He has been involved in Uruguay's build up, but the goals are probably going to come from set pieces, Suarez or Cavani.

      Would avoid both tbh

Yes, definitely. He offers a nice balance between a potential 3-pointer in one of the best four teams and playing fodder.
