With five converted World Cup penalties and 65 points between them, Harry Kane (£11.2m) and Andreas Granqvist (£5.4m) are being backed to continue their fine form in this afternoon’s quarter-final in Samara.

Kane is the tournament’s current leading goalscorer on six goals and is the second-most bought Fantasy asset of this round, having been drafted in by over 250,000 McDonald’s FIFA managers.

The Tottenham Hotspur striker now features in 43% of Fantasy squads and is the most popular pick in attack.

Kane has been particularly ruthless with his opportunities, scoring his half-dozen goals from just nine shots.

Jesse Lingard‘s (£7.5m) ownership has now passed 20%, while there has also been plenty of Fantasy money for John Stones (£5.9m) and penalty shoot-out hero Jordan Pickford (£5.5m) – despite England not keeping a clean sheet in their four World Cup 2018 matches thus far.

Harry Maguire (£4.9m) looks like an intriguing budget differential: the Leicester City centre-back is in just 5.8% of McDonald’s FIFA squads despite having more penalty box touches than any other defender at the World Cup.

Kieran Trippier (£5.5m), creator of more chances than any other defender at the tournament, features in 13.4% of our sides.

No player has offered better value for money than Granqvist, meanwhile: the Swedish centre-half has returned 5.9 points per million spent.

Sweden’s captain has had six attempts on goal so far, scoring twice from the spot while also keeping three clean sheets.

Viktor Claesson (£5.7m), who delivered attacking returns in all three of his group stage appearances, features in 13.2% of Fantasy squads and is Sweden’s next most-owned player.

Goalkeeper Robin Olsen (£5.2m), who like Granqvist has kept three shut-outs this summer, is included in 9.8% of McDonald’s FIFA teams.

Mikael Lustig (£5.6m) misses out today through suspension.

England XI (3-5-2): Pickford; Walker, Stones, Maguire; Trippier, Young, Lingard, Henderson, Dele; Kane, Sterling

Sweden XI (4-4-2): Olsen; Lindelof, Granqvist, Augustinsson, Krafth; Larsson, Ekdal, Forsberg, Claesson; Berg, Toivonen

I mean Sweden really weren't anything to write home about. Croatia will be an interesting game (provided it is Croatia...) I do think England will make the finals but get beat by either of the other two teams.

Anything can happen in 90 minutes, especially one with supercharged emotions like a World Cup Final.

France and Belgium aren't invincible. And we have Harry Maguire.

Indeed, Belgium were so close to being dumped out by Japan. It's wide open.

And they were two goals down until about the 70th. Sure that's plenty of time but come on, plenty would have been worried for them.

Lot's of positivity everywhere, which is great, but the pundits seem to be ignoring any negative points. I think Klinsmann is just doing his duty for BBC, collecting his pay packet, sticking to the script without doing a Slavan Bilic. They are like FPL managers who make decisions based on results and FPL points rather than the eye test and/or underlying stats. 😀

If Pickford didn't have a good game, we'd be hearing a different story. There were several moments of inexcusable defending; despite some actual quality in the final third today, it was still lacking; and the pace of the game was slow at times when it needn't be.

Not to be a pessimist, but I'd love to see some more flair and pace in the next game, because the potential is there. If we don't take the game to the opponent in the next round, the result could be drastically different, despite a similarly 'positive' performance. England DID play well though 🙂

There's something to be said for grinding out results though. France have similarly looked 'good' without impressing. I think they're by far the favorites to win.

Balance is overrated. Unbalanced teams can score more than balanced teams and vice versa. It basically doesn't matter 🙂

      1. UshFPL
        • 9 Years
        7 years, 11 months ago

It's good to have though for flexibility in making transfers. E.g. Lots of people have 2 7.0 forwards but if Auba and Aguero are both on fire then they will have to tear up their teams

        1. Epic Fail
          • 15 Years
          7 years, 11 months ago

Only takes a couple of transfers to adjust.

            • 9 Years
            7 years, 11 months ago

Well then that's 3 transfers used and 2 major downgrades. Far from ideal

              • 15 Years
              7 years, 11 months ago

Aye of course not ideal, but easily done. You're never stuck with whatever system you choose.

          2. Piggs Boson
            • 14 Years
            7 years, 11 months ago

Only if the money is in big piles. If it's spread thinly everywhere it could take more than two to adjust.

        2. Deulofail
          • 10 Years
          7 years, 11 months ago

I feel the same about "flexibility". It's overstated how much your team needs to be "torn apart" to buy players that you want. Take it from me. I played 523 at the beginning of the last season with 3 x 4.5 mids, and then 4 x 4.5 mids. I only took one or two hits in the first half of the season (compared to loads in the second half when I had a "flexible", more template team). Nobody is ever essential, so you can go without or find a way to slot them in with, or often, without a hit. Aguero might be "on fire" after 3 goals in two games, and then not score for a couple games. Flexible teams will be spending transfers and hits instead of setting up their teams for more longevity and gaining points from the players they sold, who were good options already (which is why they bought them!) and worked in combination with the other players in your plan (i.e. any roteation planned, and efficient sepending with no money ITB for multiple weeks, etc). Finally, when you sell a player in a "flexible" teams, you still only sell one for one, so the player you want to sell might still be less than the player you want to buy, or might be millions more expensive, which means you have loads of money wasted in the bank.

Sorry for the ill-formatted essay 🙂

      2. el polako
        • 8 Years

It dosent matter if your heavy hitter is on form but should he hit bad patch and rest of your team is made of magic beans you may struggle to rack up points.
I've managed to squize Auba, Bobby, Zaha, Eriksen, Mane, Willian and Mikhi plus couple 5.5 defa - lots of potential scorers.
But I agree in principal that there is no such thing like "the right way to play the game".

Yeah, typically I tend to play a bit more like you, here. Spreading the cash and avoiding the money-draining assets. But gotta take it case-by-case. I have Salah at the moment and I'm still happy with the rest of the team,.

    2. theRealMoneyball

Have to go with one imo. Or two of salah kane aguero. These have the ability to explode 4 goals and going without will hurt. Balanced team requires quality captain picks every week, impossible

Wonder where we’ll be playing our next semi in 2050? Probably the Stadium Elon, Mars City, Mars.

      Mars United's stadium; Intergalactic Trafford.

Works for me, but if it didn't work I would leave it and move on.

I’ve spent more time on my kit than team so far. Priorities.

Ill try one more time, any estimate on player projection for the upcoming season in the members area?

As Martial seems to have reconciled with Mourinho at 7.5M, as a well as players being at WC, could result in Martial being a potential bargain for the start of the season.
If Man United differentials hit the ground running price can rocket due to worldwide support.

You don't score points from the bench.

Should I get a player from a team even if I predict they lose?

Everyone has the same amount of games left. Obviously apart from Croatia and Russia.

I guess the only concern is the teams in the 3rd place play off are more likely to leave players out. I mean they probably won't, but more likely than the finalists.

You can only ever beat what's in front of you and England are doing just that. Southgate uniting us again, feels quite refreshing 🙂
