The departure of Riyad Mahrez is the theme that runs throughout our latest detailed analysis for the new Fantasy Premier League season.

The Algerian leaves a big hole at Leicester City from both a goal-scoring and assist-providing perspective, meaning those left behind will have to up their game.

We’ve gone over last season’s underlying statistics to assess which players could fill the void and whether the Foxes are worth considering in 2018/19 without Mahrez.

Fantasy Football Scout members can view that data in the Members’ Area and also read our full analysis of it below to help them pick the best possible FPL team this season.

    Which looks best?

    a) Cedric, Firmino, Stephens (4.5m mid)
    b) Azpi, Tosun, Kenedy

I think the RMT tool in members is a good tool. However, I think it could by slightly more user friendly in terms of:
    1) dragging players from the player lists to the team you pick.
    2) showing a rotated 11 in each week.
    3) updating points more accurately. I think, as the consensus shows on this site, it is far more productive to have cheap rotating players that have a major effect on points outcome.

It might be me not grasping the tool particularly well, or the algorithm to do what I said is prohibitive in terms of computer power.

I hope the "powers that be" read it.

Defensive rotations go out the window after about GW5

      I predict

      Leno
      Bellerin Sokratis Mustafi Monreal
      Torreira Ramsey
      Ozil
      Mkhitaryan Lacazette Auba

Probably right, but I can't see him starting the season with the new guys. Not with the opening fixtures

i think Mavropanos or Chambers will start before Mustafi , also Xhaka will need to fit in somewhere so either Ozil or Laca could be under threat imo

      3. AndyCook
        8 years, 9 days ago

Torreira probably won’t start with Xhaka still playing. Second centre back could be Chambers. Other option is Lacazette on the bench, Ozil wide and Ramsey pushed further up.

      Leno
      Bellerin Sokratis Mustafi Kolasinac
      Torreira Ramsey
      Chaka
      Mkhitaryan Lacazette Aubameyang

Ozil/Mkh interchangeable. Anything like his PSG/ Sevilla teams he likes an AMC that comes deep ie Banega, with a box to box (Ramsey) and holding player shielding defence. With some players switching as the game progresses.

At the start of the season there could be a few changes, but eventually I think he'll go for:

      Leno
      Bellerin-Sokratis-Mustafi-Monreal
      Xhaka-Torreira
      Ramsey
      Mkhi-Auba-Özil

Depending on form Mustafi, Monreal, and Özil could be rotated.

I more or less agree with this, but don't think he'll play Ozil and MKHI. Not enough goal threat vs lacazette, and not enough defensively as he likes a pressing team.

Are there any players who you have vowed to not get all season due them letting you down repeatedly? For me these make my 'never again' list

Adrien (after dgw no c/s troll)

    Ogbonna (see above)
Dunk (OG imminent troll 😆 )
    Holebas (card magnet nutter)
Christensen (subbed off for 1pt troll)

    Redmond (preseason Henry)
    Hazard ('easy' fixture captain troll)
    Willian (all show, no go)

    Gabbiadini (troll)
    Benteke (Lukaku-lite)
    Kane (slow starter/captain troll)

Can't help but feel that Christensen was a little hard done by last season - young, got a few unfortunate knocks at the wrong moments (i.e. 58 minutes) and also missed games with bad flu around Christmas time.

Pretty much agree with most of the others though (with the exception of Kane and Hazard and possibly Willian)

Kane and Haz are not captainable for their price. They blank for a run of games then return when you give up on them

Faith in Kane certainly hurt me last season. And on the few occasions I have had Hazard, he has always let me down........

But in the right form etc, I would still consider them - albeit tentatively.

With rotation becoming more and more of an issue each season, are people approaching their outfield bench differently?

I'm trying to go for absolutely nailed players who are cheap but capable of delivering points - rather than 4.0 defensive punts, 4.5 midfielders who will get you 2 points max or non-playing cheaper strikers. Costs a little extra, but might be worth the investment?

So currently - Tomkins, Kenedy and Cairney/Hughes.

Snap with Kenedy and Tomkins. Have you considered Wilshere (£5.0mil), if he starts I think he'll be a great creater for West ham.

Not changed my team in about a week. Any Thoughts ?

    Fabianski
    Robertson Coleman Cedric

    Ryan Daniels Tomkins Masuaku

      Nice. Similar themes to mine.

I'm not a fan of Daniels (and Bournemouth defence in general), but I know some will disagree. At 4.5, I would recommend looking at a Wolves defender - 24 clean sheets last season and a manager known for defensive stability. Someone like Boly, or Doherty (if they don't sign a new fullback).

Prefer Chalobah over Masauka, personally. But again, purely subjective. Need to keep an eye on Mhki over preseason to make sure he is nailed.

For what it's worth, this is mine:

      Fabianski

      Robertson, Coleman, Mendy, Douglas
      Salah, Mahrez, Costa
      Aubameyang, Firmino, Tosun

      4.0, Tomkins, Kenedy, Cairney/Hughes

really good advice reuse, i will be keeping a eye on mkhy as i feel he is the biggest worry in that team, chalobah if nailed is a better option than musuaku imo. Charlie daniels is a difficult on, if bournemouth start strong he always has a good start to the season so will give him a chance, your team is solid mate, goood luck and thanks again.

Similar to mine so I'd say it's a very good team!
I've gone with Tosun as my cheaper forward plus upgraded Mkhi to Ramsey and gone with a 4.0 defender.

i would much rather prefer ramsey to mkhy tbh, but if mkhy is nailed then we could be onto something especially with the auba link up.Thanks dude.

What is the best forward configuration to start the season with?

A.... auba and kun plus 7m

    B...one of auba and kun.

If I can have exactly the same midfield with both options and the only difference is a less expensive keeper as a 4m defender, surely A is better?

    Thanks

I have Auba+KUn at the moment.

          The team is this.....

          Patricio 4
          Robbo bailly cedric Daniels wanbissaki
          Salah mahrez jota hughes Stephens
          Kun auba tosun

If mitro goes to Fulham at 6m I may get him - and that opens the door for mahrez to Sanchez with another 0.5 knocked off the defence

          What do you think??

            • 16 Years

Nice, mf looks a bit suspect though.

Yeah 6m striker is the issue. Problem is its Tosun or nothing from Everton....I'm not falling for Walcott so I might have to settle for nothing.

I've gone A and took the hit on the def. I know a lot of people are going on about the value of the defenders though. I'm hoping Peltier and Wan-Bassaka become viable as playing 4m for bench options to go 343 on a tighter budget.

If someone like Coleman/Douglas/PVA look to be basically mids in pre season I'll bring them in and maybe look at a 433.

      If you have Salah, B.

A would hurt the rest of your team too much and is needless when you have a 13m captain most weeks.

True, but I don't currently have that slot in my midfield because I think there's a lot of potential bargain options

My placeholder for Ramsey/Mkhi is Mahrez. Or Siggy if Everton proves a flop despite good early fixtures

Morning guys! So I'm down to 2 drafts, a pretty standard 3-5-2 and a more unorthodox 5-2-3.

    A)

    DDG
    Robertson | Daniels | Cedric
    Salah | D.Silva | Groß | Jota | Kenedy
    Auba | Aguero

    Hamer | Holebas | Kamara | Peltier

    0ITB

    B)

    Ryan
    Davies | Robertson | Douglas | PVA | Coleman
    Salah | Kenedy
    Auba | Firmino | Aguero

    Button | Cairney | Romeu | Stephens

    0ITB

Thoughts on which you think is better appreciated.

    Thanks

I think there's better value than Groß at 7.0, but I'm not really a fan of either due to personal preference. At least the 5-2-3 looks like it has a nice solid backline instead of picks like Cedric, although ideally the bench would be a little stronger to facilitate a formation change if it all goes tits up.

I really like it actually 🙂

As good as any other I've seen so far, and if Ramsey and Willian are still options by the time the season starts it will probably outscore mine even though I like mine better

The best squad I can put together excludes Salah - I have to run some numbers to see how many extra points the 3.5 million saved (by getting Mane or Eriksen) will get me by upgrading elsewhere - I suspect it’s about 6 points a game week, but lot more than the 2 or 3 extra points Salah may provide

.... try to form a squad without Salah, it’s actually much more fun 🙂

Yet another good Palace option. They have defensive options at every price point:

      AWB - 4.0
      Tomkins - 4.5
      Sakho - 5.0
      PVA - 5.5

Milivojevic & Zaha good attacking options also

Interesting that Jorginho played as a 6 for Sarri. He was the conductor at the base of the attacking shape. I suppose this means Kante will be an 8, meaning the casuals may well get some jammy points 😀

Interesting when looking at the most popular picks.
I see so many players at risk in missing out of the first game through world cup, transfers and managerial changes.
Out of the 30 top picks I would rate only 10 being worthwhile picks.

    1. Piggs Boson
      • 14 Years
      8 years, 9 days ago

It's nice seeing so many rotation prone, and world cup risks being highly owned. Lingard at 17.6%, Trippier at 23.1%, TAA at 18.6%.

Trippier rotates with Aurier anyway, but has just played an entire World Cup. Crazy that almost a quarter of players have picked him. A nailed on Trippier would be worth 7.0m, but it's just a dream atm.

      1. Eden Wizard
        • 8 Years
        8 years, 9 days ago

Isn't the opposite argument true about Aurier given that he is likely nailed?

    2. Ohhh Shola Ameobi
      • 10 Years
      8 years, 9 days ago

Does auto-picking put players such as Trippier in teams? I guess some people will just have auto-picked a team, to properly adjust it in the last week.

Otherwise, could people who don't plan to wildcard early be putting in these players in the hope that they'll be back GW2?

How can he possibly be nailed ? He is a 20 year old kid with just 7 PL games to his name and another seasoned PL fullback fit aand ready to go in his position.

He may be a starter, he may get rotated, he may come off the bench ... that is all we know 🙂
