Goal threat and pass completion look to be the main weapons in the locker of new Southampton signing Jannik Vestergaard (£5.0m).

The Dane’s height and strength should prove useful to the Saints back-line in 2018/19 but he is more likely to find the net and perform well on the Bonus Points System than he is to improve the club’s clean sheet potential.

We’ve gone over Vestergaard’s final season at Borussia Mönchengladbach to find out whether he’s worth signing for our Fantasy Premier League squads for the new campaign.

THE HISTORY

25-year-old Danish international Vestergaard finally arrives in England after several years of interest in his services from the Premier League.

At 1.9 metres tall the new Southampton man is an imposing figure whose key attributes are his height, strength and ability to pass the ball.

After five years at Hoffenheim, Vestergaard joined Werder Bremen in 2015 but signed for Borussia Mönchengladbach a year later. Two campaigns in North Rhine-Westphalia produced successive ninth-place finishes in the Bundesliga as well as a journey to DFB-Pokal semi-finals and Champions League football in 2016/17.

In that time Vestergaard established himself as the defensive lynchpin for Mönchengladbach proving an ever-present figure at the back. In fact, he was the only outfield Bundesliga player to play every minute of their side’s matches in the calendar year of 2017, never injured and never rested.

Vestergaard’s uses aren’t restricted to defensive duties, though. In 66 Bundesliga appearances for Mönchengladbach he found the net seven times, making him the most prolific defender in the German top-flight for the calendar year of 2017. Furthermore, he was responsible for playing passes out from the back at Mönchengladbach too, boasting a completion rate of 85 percent. His total of 1,913 was the third best in the division last season behind only Kevin Vogt and Mats Hummels. Long balls were Vestergaard’s speciality, his total of 182 also the third best in the Budesliga. In fact, his ability in this area of the field meant he was used in midfield at times during his spell with Hoffenheim.

His performances in the last two seasons with Mönchengladbach led to Vestergaard being named in Denmark’s preliminary 35-man squad for the 2018 World Cup. He did not make the final cut but still trained with the squad during the tournament.

THE PROSPECTS

With Mark Hughes experimenting with three central-backs so far in pre-season it seems likely that Vestergaard has been brought to Southampton to act as the ball-playing defender in a 3-5-2 system. His aptitude for passing the ball is clear, last season boasting better a pass completion rate than any of the other candidates for inclusion in the new-look back-three in Hampshire. Although it must be noted that the 25-year-old has considerably more experience playing in a four-man defence in a 4-4-2 formation, as was used heavily by Dieter Hecking at Mönchengladbach last season.

In fact, it’s hard to argue that the Dane will definitely improve the Saints’ chances of clean sheets on his own in 2018/19, as you will see from the data above. Only Maya Yoshida (£4.5m) and Jan Bednarek (£4.0m) averaged fewer successful tackles than Vestergaard last season and only Ryan Bertrand (£5.0m) and Bednarek registered fewer interceptions. The Dane may have ranked eighth overall in the Bundesliga for clearances per game (five) but that number was still beaten by three Southampton centre-backs in 2017/18. To his credit, though, Vestergaard bested the Saints defence for blocks (1.2 per game).

Crucially, the Saints registered eight clean sheets last season while Vestergaard recorded just seven with Mönchengladbach, in a division of arguably lower overall quality than the Premier League. Where Vestergaard will bring some improvement is in terms of continuity, the only outfield Bundesliga player to complete every match of 2017. Of those who could be used in Hughes’ back-three at Southampton his season, only Bertrand made more than 30 appearances last season.

Vestergaard’s Fantasy appeal will largely stem from bonus points and goal threat in 2018/19, it would seem. The three goals he scored in 32 Bundesliga appearances last season was more than any of his new centre-back colleagues managed in 2017/18, and only two two players in the German top flight won more aerial duals than him (103). Only Yoshida averaged more shots in the box than Vestergaard last season so he is likely to be a key target for Southampton’s set-pieces, also boosting the appeal of corner and free-kick taker James Ward-Prowse (£5.5m).

As for passing, Vestergaard has the potential to register plenty of baseline points on the BPS. Players who attempt a minimum of 30 passes per match can pick up BPS points, and last season the centre-back averaged 59.8 per game.

Competing with his new team-mates for Clearances, Blocks and Interceptions on top of these two areas of strength may prove difficult, but that’s by no means a disadvantage for him overall when it comes to bonus. Nicolas Otamendi (£6.5m) accrued more bonus points than any defender other than César Azpilicueta (£6.5m) last season, combining his goal threat with passing accuracy.

Welcome back to the grind all!

How's this look for a first RMT of the season?

    Patricio-Fabianski
    Mendy-Robertson-Cedric-Daniels-Peltier
    Salah-Sanchez-Sane-Cairney-Masuaku/4.5
    Aub-Tosun-Jimenez

Obvs concerns are if Sanchez will start given he's not involved in the US tour but if he does he will most likely be OOP

Solid midfield, decent attack, back line has too many uncertainties for me. I don't like Ryan with their start, hence why I'm going Patricio but could go either way. Keane worries me in terms of value I'd rather downgrade TAA (may not start) and have two 6m def who are more nailed. Valencia is a good pick but i believe two 6m will give you better value over the season.

based off those suggestions, it would most likely give this team (which I think looks pretty good tbf)

        Patricio Foster
        Robbo Mendy 4.5 4.5 Peltier
        Salah Sanchez Sane Willian Stephens

Mata could go either way really...I wouldn't put my eggs in that basket but early on it could pay off. Heavy in defence but there are points to be had, I would downgrade one of them to beef up the midfield but thats personal preference. 1. Louis_Sans_Balls

All really depends on how well you think he'll do this season. I personally don't see him getting near what he did last season but he'll still do well not sure if that will be enough. Stronger midfield may equal more chances but then again having to do less with more an occasional rotation to keep him fresh might also diminish his chances so depends on how you look at it.

I agree that replacing him with the likes of Sanchez would not be the best course of action. He's never looked comfortable since joining United, same team, same coach same system, don't see why that would be any different this season, same with Martial who actually wanted to leave the club.

Auba and Mkhi could be good options despite tough early fixtures. New coach + new system may = new opptys

I actually really like it surprisingly

King as you say has great fixtures and is a great punt for sure, but at the same time that 0.5m could maybe be used to upgrade him to Tosun/Zaha?

      love the backline

only concerns are the weak and mostly non-playing bench and the fact you'd have to play Douglas + your 5m mid every week

I'd suggest downgrading Douglas to a 4.5 and upgrading WB to a 4.5 and rotate them, or do a three-way rotation along with your 5m mid

To answer the question on the previous page about Erik Durm, Huddersfield's new left-back - he's had a rotten last four years due to injuries, being unfit for 691 (!) days of the four years since the 2014 World Cup.

Dortmund no longer thought they could rely on him healthwise, but had big problems selling him due to his injury record - a move to Stuttgart broke down on these grounds. With only 12 months left on Durm's contract, BVB were keen to move him on and the player was keen to get first-team football. Huddersfield seems a sensible choice, as Wagner had coached Durm before for Borussia's reserves and so he should know how to get the best out of the player. He can also be played in midfield, if required, and has a very good no-nonsense mentality.

Unless Huddersfield suddenly start getting clean sheets, Durm won't be a great FPL option, however, even if he manages to stay fit. He was used mainly defensively, clearing up after Dembele, and isn't the greatest aerial threat either.

    Thoughts on 1st draft?

Pickford (Speroni- i will check is there any better solution for 4.0)

    Colman- Cedric- Bailly (Tomkins)

    KDV- Sane- Willian- Walcott (Stephens)

    Kane- Firmino- Zaha (Bednarek)

1st i think Everton and CRY will have a great start so i am starting with 3 players from Everton.....smart or not?

What do you think about team without Salah in it?

And why is there so many teams with Abu and there is no Kane a lot?

3 Everton might be a bit much.

KDB and Kane might not start the season due to World Cup fatigue. Spurs don't have very good fixtures to start the season.

Otherwise your team looks good, and good structure. Keep an eye on Willian - rumours he may be sold.

Agree, but they have rly good fixtures at start, and i ll replace Colman with Bellarin later, same as Walcott.

About Willina, Sari want him to stay, and if he dont leave the club i belive he is nailed too.

You are right about KDB too, ill mby change him with Mahrez. But Kane stay, that boy had brought me a lot of pts last 3 seassons

If tripling up on Everton I'd probably go one in defence, mid and upfront...doubling up on them at the back could work but they're really an unknown quantity under Silva, he's known for attacking football not necessarily defending.

    Best 5.5 mid?

Most of the 5.5s don't appeal much to me. Some would say Deulofeu. Cairney, McArthur and Kenedy at 5m could be reasonable 4th/5th midfielder options.

Lookman if he is nailed or Redmond could be worth a punt

Mooy or Neves. But mby its better option Kendey for 5.0

    Pickford, Stekelenburg
    Robertson, Mendy, Bailly, ???, ???
    Salah, Mahrez, Jota, ???, Stephens
    Aubameyang, Tosun, ???

    A) Firmino, Cairney, 4m, 4m (3-4-3 with Cairney as 4th mid, and 2x 4m defenders perma-benched)

    B) Quaner, DSilva, Cedric, Tomkins (4-4-2 with Cedric & Tomkins rotating as 4th def, and Quaner perma-benched)

Tomkins over Daniels, Rambo over Willian for me

      Good team overall

Thanks, Daniels over tomkins was only done because Daniels is home and tomkins away. The willian pick is wishful thinking, I want to cover an attacking Chelsea team...aubam is enough for arsenal with those fixtures for me. Thank you for your comments.

Walcott is much better solution then Mikhy at the start of seasson.

Not sure about Alonso.CFC wil change formation in 4-3-3, and he will not be so agresiv like 2 last seasons and he cost a lot. Not sure about Arnautovic too, he is forword now, not in the midle, and he starts vs LFC......other are solid

Didnt watch much football at the end of last season. Why has Bailey fallen out of favour with Jose?

Mourinho apparently wanted to play Smalling, Jones and Rojo into the WC and Bailly therefore suffered.

So many good options in 5.0 - 6.0 bracekt when it come to defenders that I am seriously considering 4-3-3 as my main formation.
