With one round of the latest Fantasy Premier League season already in the history books, it’s time to start preparing for Gameweek 2.

Where better to start than with the all-important captain debate, which looks like it will be less clear-cut than it was in Gameweek 1.

Mohamed Salah (£13.0m) will obviously remain the favourite with his 54 percent ownership but his next fixture is arguably tougher than a home tie with a new-look West Ham side. In the final nine Gameweeks of 2018/19 the only outfit to keep more clean sheets than Crystal Palace was Liverpool themselves. Since James Tomkins (£4.5m) and Mamadou Sakho (£5.0m) were paired together again the Eagles have been a difficult prospect to break down.

For those not in possession of Salah, there are other alternatives amongst his team-mates including Sunday’s brace-scoring midfielder Sadio Mané (£9.5m), left-back Andrew Robertson (£6.0m) who assisted and kept a clean sheet, and striker Roberto Firmino (£9.5m).

Manchester City’s options certainly win out when it comes to fixture difficulty as they host Huddersfield Town on Sunday afternoon. However, the fact that every player has now returned to the group since the World Cup the dreaded issue of rotation could cause some problems.

Sergio Aguero (£11.0m) is the most backed ownership-wise, in 32 percent of squads, but could be benched to allow Gabriel Jesus (£10.5m) a first start of the season. Raheem Sterling (£11.0m) looks to be back in the conversation sooner than expected too, his seven-point haul in Gameweek 1 putting him on the captain radar, especially as his 2.5 percent ownership makes a potentially powerful differential option.

Just as Robertson may be considered for the captaincy, his Man City counter-part Benjamin Mendy (£6.0m) has forced his way into the conversation with 15 points scored against Arsenal from assisting both of his team’s goals.

Tottenham’s options have dragged themselves into the conversation after seeing off Newcastle on Saturday and preparing for a home match against newly-promoted Fulham. Harry Kane (£12.5m) may not have set the world on fire but with 31.1 percent ownership he should be considered by those in possession of him.

Elsewhere on the Spurs roster Gameweek 1 goalscorer Dele Alli (£9.0m) may be turned to as another differential option while Christian Eriksen (£9.5m) offers the more creative angle for the fixture.

Anyone brave enough to place their captain on a player from Chelsea v Arsenal have a few outside outside options. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£11.0m) will be the obvious choice from the Gunners while Marcos Alonso‘s (£6.5m) performance against Huddersfield may have convinced some of his doubters. Don’t forget that Eden Hazard (£10.5m), backed by 11 percent, may alsio play a part in the fixture.

Make sure you watch our Captain video below and then vote in the poll underneath it. Why not tell us why you made your choice in the comments? We’ll be rounding off the debate later this week with another Captain Sensible article.

    Morning all

Looking at draft transfers, I've got Jahanbalaskh from brighton and wondering whether to try and go for one of the below, who do you think is the best shout?

Neves (I already have Jota and Ximinez though)
    Mata
    Kante
Jorginho (worried that Hazard will just take pen duty back)
    Fraser
    Pereyra
    Yarmalenko
    Kovacic
    Adama Traore

Feel like they're all upgrades but not sure who to aim for!

      Richarlison
      Fraser
      Neves

      In that order

It's for a draft league, Richarlison is long gone.

Who else finds themselves between a rock and a hard place having loaded up on Liverpool and Palace assets?

Zaha faces Robbo and either have to play Tomkins / AWB vs Salah and Mane, or punt on Peltier...

Hoping for 4-4 with plenty of assists from those fullbacks!

Because they are the best alternatives in 4.5 and 4.0 price bracket. Fixtures are also gold.

This. AWB was originally bench fodder and Tomkins the pick of the bunch in the 4.5 category. In hindsight I'd have had Shaw and not gone for De Gea, but still not convinced Shaw has that starting spot nailed

I hope a decent cheap striker emerges to relatively consistent. This has always been a problem position for me. Austin, Origi, Iheanacho, Llorente, Gabbiadini, Abraham, Niasse, have all caused problems and wasted transfers over the last two seasons.

if, a big if, an injury to gray or deeney doesn't result in a change in formation away from 442 then isaac success is only 4.5mil. even if he has more tabloid stories with bottles of baileys and prostitutes than goals there is a lot of raw potential there

Surely Mendy is an excellent option? Hudds have one of the worst attacks I've ever seen so can't see them having a shot on target never mind a goal. Mendy will be camping close to the opposition box all game.

      Aguero I think....

    Good morning guys.

That morning coffee does taste a lot better now with FPL back. Thought I'd come on here for a couple of quick questions.

Had a good start to the season, and for once going with the sensible option of saving my FT this GW. Feels right after all those hours of pre season-planning, especially with a good result from GW1 to back it up.

For GW2, would you start Tomkins or Peltier? (Wan-Bis also on the bench).

And, wouldn't it feel horribly wrong not to captain Kun at home to Huddersfield, even if his minutes might be limited and City struggled to break them down defensively last time around? After all, it is the almighty FPL-legend Kun in a home match against Huddersfield we are talking about.

    1. C-Dawgg
      • 11 Years
      7 years, 11 months ago

I can't see much harm in starting Peltier, if he doesn't play you lose nothing, if he does you don't have to watch your defenders play Liverpool.

Yes I'll be causing aguero for sure unless Pep says anything to indicate him not playing.

This isn't really a part of the season where players need rests.

I've had a new way of thinking this year about subs and in particular the last person you pick... I wouldn't worry too much about it. Neither are going to shoot the lights out. Cardiff are dreadful and palace are going to concede against arguably the best attacking side in the league. They could both end up with zero... Are long as your happy the other 10 are bringing home to bacon then it doesn't really matter. 2 points either way over the course...

Start Peltier over Tomkins/AWB. Don't start Peltier over PVA.

Minutes are key. Kun could come on as a sub and score big but on the other hand Salah will play at least 75-80 minutes. If that's the scenario you think will happen then you've got to go with Salah surely.

but yeah vert is solid, can purely concentrate on the matches, not the teamsheets too. don't think rose or aurier will get less playing time than last season, poch is smart enough not to get carried away with a few solid performances against the likes of panama

Kun, Eriksen, Mendy, Mane, would be my preference for the GW2 armband.

Ings got 33 mins and totally changed the game, picking up ball from deep, running at players and personally I think that was a penalty that he would have won....

Ings if it was me, but will he start, on that showing I think he will, and Everton defense is very shaky

I spent the entire last season asking myself every GW why I didn't just keep the armband on Salah. Come GW2 18/19 and I consider putting it on Aguero even though he blanked and Salah scored in the previous GW 😀

Man City at home = goals...

If you can pick a player that starts then I think you will be fine!

          5 in the cup....
          0 in the league...

I would always expect city to score at home was all I meant....

Sort of understand Mark's thinking getting Salah as his only real premium captaincy choice, ie leaving no choice other than to perma-captain Salah! Makes the game far too boring imo, but that's just personal preference!

Totally agree mate, I play this game predominantly for entertainment and for a release from the grind that daily life can sometimes be! The last thing that I want to do is make FPL a grind!

    - Fabianski or Foster

      Zaha & Fabianski for me.

WH defence look shaky so he will have save points his way & might keep a clean sheet as Bournemouth aren't great.

Also Palace I think are underrated this year, not ridiculous to think they will score against Liverpool!

But at least we will get the double digits. Yeah your right. I should pick 14 players that don't start and Salah. That way I can never pick a back captain choice

Of course it's great to own both. But one of the reasons that I went Salahless was to not have that perma-captaincy pressure on, have a better overall squad and enjoy the game more. That's all mate.

Liverpool look good enough to potetially mount a challenge to city so at least we could have some excitement there. Worry that cardiff and Huddesfield could be relegation certs before Christmas.
