Buoyed by some impressive scores from the opening day, the Scoutcast crew are in optimistic mood as they tackle the key issues facing Fantasy managers ahead of Gameweek 2.

I’m joined by Andy, Az and new Scoutcast face Neale (aka Skonto Rigga) to separate the wheat from the chaff in the Fantasy Premier League’s transfer market.

We ponder whether reports of the demise of forwards have been greatly exaggerated and list the under-performing players from Gameweek 1 who may well punish their sellers.

Our rough with the smooth round-up features a tale of two benches.

While later in the show I come under attack from my colleagues, and even a moth, as we search for this season’s budget midfield gem.

We end by revealing our Captain choices when Neale unleashes one of the most surprising armband selections the Scoutcast has ever seen. It caps an impressive debut to remember for both him and the moth.

This ScoutCast was first beamed live via our YouTube channel on Tuesday evening. Be sure to subscribe to get notice of future live episodes.

Might be. Probably means you're benching someone you planned on starting though? I'd say go for it if it was Bernardo Silva, but assume you already have him or are maxed on City?

None at the moment I reckon. Maybe Foster in goal?

Breaking the template at this stage just means you missed some of last week's top performers surely?

I missed out on Mane and Richarlson. But I gained on Jimanez over King etc.

Mane and Richarlson won't outside Hazard and Maddison every week.

Depends if you want Arnie for long term or not - if you do then this is a plum fixture. Reckon he hauls.

      1. Wrench
        • 10 Years
        7 years, 8 months ago

Torn between Arnie and Zaha long term, but do fancy Arnie for a haul this week. Scored well GW1 so a luxury trade feels ok.

        1. Mondeo
          • 11 Years
          7 years, 8 months ago

          Fair play.

If you've got no pressing needs and you'd otherwise be playing Zaha then I'd pull trigger (especially considering how likely it is that most will WC in the next 3-5 GWs..)

But majority of advice from *much* better players than me on here will be to not follow your gut and save the FT.

How's this for a theory on the Kun/Jesus debate :

Since KDB's injury, I've been scanning the City side for leaders. If Kun wasn't picked, you'd possibly be faced with :

    Ederson
    Walker Ota Stones Mendy
    Fernandinho
    Bilva Gundogan
    Mahrez Sterling
    Jesus

At first glance, I don't see many leaders in that side. Ota in defence and Fernandinho but attack wise, I don't see many leaders on the pitch. The only leader that could possibly offer experience to come into midfield would be Dilva.

Is it a reasonable assumption that without Dilva, Kun is required up top for his experience, and Jesus could be an option if Dilva is picked in KDB's absence?

Althought every City player has enough ability, most of them are inexperienced and I'd imagine Pep would want a few leaders on the pitch and the attack of Bilva, Gundogan, Mahrez, Sterling, Jesus does not convince me. Good news for Kun v HUDD?

    Start one:

    A) PVA (LIV) - less chance of CS but high attacking returns potential
    B) Peltier (NEW) - quite the opposite

    Thanks.

Wouldn't surprise me if City line up with Sane, Sterling and Aguero up top with DSilva replacing BSilva this weekend...

Everyone is stressing about the possibility of Aguero missing out to Jesus, while he started EVERY game at home when fit last year.

While the city mid has been rotated much more apart from Silva and KDB when fit. It's not exactly a crazy thought is it?

That's just happenstance. There's no logic behind Pep rotating Aguero only in away games. In 16/17, he was rotated in home games too.

He was preferred regardless, I guess I just used the home games to drive home the point, but you are right that that could just be coincidence.

In any case, I just get a feeling perhaps Bsilva is more at risk than Aguero is...

That's just Pep BS talk to keep people guessing. Jose does the same thing every week, talking down players, then they start the next week and score...

I am not saying it will happen, but I was trying to work a way to get BSilva IN my team when I realized Sterling, Jesus and Sane are probably preferred flanking the striker, which leaves his spot vulnerable to DSilva...

Guess he could play him on the wing also, but then I get the feeling Sane is due some play time before that happens.

If you watched Bilva's performance against Bayern and Chelsea, you'll know it's not BS. He really was the best player in the team.

No reason for any manager to bench such an in-form player. Bilva is being eased into midfield to replace Dilva, that's why Mahrez was purchased. With KDB out, he'll probably start alongside Dilva or Gundogan.

I did not see those matches no. I did See the Arsenal game though, where I thought Sterling, Mendy and Mahrez looked better in terms of FPL.

But if he looks an assured starter that 7.5 price tag might be impossible to ignore. Will reassess this weekend and look at bringing him in with 2FT the week after.

            Thanks for the input!

What are people's thoughts on the Free Hit chip? When is best to use it?

    A) Blank GW during DGW season
    B) When your team has injuries and WC isn't an option
    C) When players you don't have, have good fixtures - eg this GW Spurs and a few others have nice home fixtures
    D) Save for when Salah is injured or a doubt
    E) It doesn't matter as it's a pretty useless chip

Found a Finnish article about FPL that has a few quotes from Ronka himself.

    Translation -

Alongside the Premier League is starting an open league where also the Finns are succeeding - fantasy football legend advises for patience

One of the world’s most followed sports league, the English Premier League, is starting on Friday. Simultaneously, a competition which has grown from a shadow league to a global phenomenon, is making millions of football fans biting their nails for the next nine months.

Last season the virtual manager game Fantasy Premier League, shortened FPL, had already 5.9 million managers worldwide. The game’s aim is to build a team consisting of Premier League players, who will score points according to real events in the PL.

Even though the managers are allowed to enter their home country by themselves, the game is certainly international. Last season’s winner Yusuf Sheikh is from Tanzania and also the Finns have succeeded well. For these reasons, it’s impossible to find out the absolute best FPL-nations.

Ville Rönkä, from Helsinki, is ranked tenth on Fantasy Football Scout’s all-time FPL ranking. Premier Fantasy Tools has him listed eighth. In fantasy football analyst Ben McNair’s listing Rönkä’s median ranking after ten seasons is the world’s best, 1412.

Rönkä, who is more of a follower than a social media idol online, is paradoxically one of the most followed Finns on English speaking forums but is actually unknown to many. For example users on Reddit’s fantasy football threads are speculating actions of his team named Timppikset.

”Sometimes I have almost felt the pressure when people are expecting a lot, but it’s nice anyway. I hope someone has benefited from following me”, Rönkä says.

The best rank of a Finnish manager in a single season is by Roope Liimatainen, also from Helsinki, when he finished fourth two seasons ago. Liimatainen admits that the final position was a once in a lifetime performance but not an accident. The success in the fantasy game depends on the commitment and also on luck.

”I got an excellent start which drove me to investigate background data and to work for the success. Last year the start was poor and I wasn’t motivated to engage myself as I did the season before”, Liimatainen tells.

”I still have to say that in the success season I didn’t really deserved to be that high with the work amount I put in. My efforts weren’t that big after all.”

Rönkä usually uses a lot of time following the PL and making the decisions at the beginning of the season whereas the end of the season goes more straightforwardly. His worst position on the worldwide ranking has been only 21 905.

His best rank is 90th and with an exception of that one year, he has always been inside the top 10 000.

”I watch games and analyse the statistics. I’m pondering why something happened and I’m trying to create the big picture of what will happen. I am following the events of the PL daily”, he explains.

”You need to be patient. Rushing and switching players back and forth, because they didn’t deliver, is probably the biggest mistake.”

Football knowledge doesn’t always lead to success in the fantasy game, although it helps to be familiar with the sport. The game of numbers is one of a kind.

”The world of fantasy football is totally different to actual football even though it’s based on events of the same matches. The price rises, the appropriate use of the chips and comparing the player prices to expected points are completely different things to understand than, let’s say, Jürgen Klopp’s counter pressing”, Liimatainen contrasts.

He ended up being an FPL manager in 2011 and has played since every year with a varying interest and success. With his team Yökastelijat, Liimatainen is aiming to be in the top 1000 if he hits the start and finds enough time to follow British football.

Liimatainen started the FPL encouraged by his football teammates but he sees the game as addictive as other similar fantasy sport games, such as Finnish hockey league’s Liigapörssi.

Majority of the games are free to play and not gambling, but for example in Draft Fantasy the PL and the Champions League are played for money.

”Through the game it is easy for the fans to know the players better and challenge friends with your own wits. Besides the FPL and Draft, I am also competing in Formula 1 fantasy manager game even though I don’t know a lot of the sport”, Liimatainen discusses.

Rönkä also has a background playing fantasy manager games before the FPL.

”In secondary school we played Yahoo’s NHL game. When I started to follow the Premier League, I already had familiarised myself with fantasy manager games. Challenging and improving yourself are keeping you interested. You can never play perfect enough."

Why is everyone worried about Aguero being rotated?! Has Pep said something? It surely can't be because he didn't score against Arsenal/didn't pass the ball to KDB...

It is important to make one distinction - a manager isn't a fantasy manager. People here worry that one game or even moment in a game changes everything. I.e Mendy, a rotation risk and injury risk one week ago, is going to be so attacking this year that top end returns are inevitable against Huddlesfield. Or Aguero, who scored two against Chelsea and is perhaps the league's best striker in the context of an unfit and out of sorts Kane, is now going to be subbed for Jesus after one match, despite no fixture pile up and a season of conclusive evidence that Pep favours Aguero (because he realised the year before that Aguero is the far superior striker).

Relax and captain the obviously best option this year if you own him. City play relegation favourites at home. I'd predict 4 goals and Aguero to invariably be amongst them.
