Everton and Leicester treated Fantasy Premier League managers to a rather dreary opening match of 2019.

The two sides were separated by just one goal in a game that was largely characterised by individual errors and sloppy play.

Perhaps the biggest indicator of how much attacking play took place is the fact that just two offside flags were raised in the entire 90 minutes, the first one not coming until just before the 80th minute.

Nevertheless, there were still a few Fantasy talking points for us to discuss in this Scout Notes article.

Everton 0-1 Leicester City

Goals: Jamie Vardy (£8.9m)

Assists: Ricardo Pereira (£5.2m)

Ricardo Pereira (£5.2m) reminded Fantasy managers the part he can play in our squads this season as he came out of Leicester’s win at Everton with a double-figure haul. The FPL defender provided the assist for Jamie Vardy‘s (£8.9m) second-half strike, taking his count to four for the season. Over his last four fixtures, Pereira has averaged 6.75 points per game.

It was another match in which the Portuguese international was deployed on the flanks of an attacking trio as Claude Puel went with a 4-3-3 formation. Typically a right-sided player, this time around Pereira was stationed on the left of Vardy, with Rachid Ghezzal (£5.1m) on the other flank. The fact that Danny Simpson (£4.2m) was trusted with his first start since Gameweek 15 shows that Puel believes he has options at right-back to free Pereira up further up the pitch, even with Daniel Amartey‘s (£4.3m) long-term injury.

Crucially, the trip to Goodison Park saw Leicester record their seventh clean sheet of the season. Only Liverpool, Chelsea, Manchester City and Spurs have more than that in 2018/19. The Foxes’ have actually been offering the potential for shutouts for some time now. They came into Gameweek 21 joint-fourth for big chances allowed in the four previous matches. At Goodison, they conceded just four shots in their penalty box all afternoon.

Southampton (home) and Wolves (away) are the next two matches for Leicester, which could provide more returns at both ends of the pitch for Pereira. However, it is Liverpool (away), Manchester United (home) and Tottenham (away) between Gameweeks 24 and 26, which may put off potential punters before their kinder stretch from Gameweek 27 onwards.

It is still worth noting that Pereira looks to be the only one to be providing any consistency in support of Vardy in attack. James Maddison (£6.8m) remained an unused substitute at Goodison Park having recorded just one offensive return since Gameweek 16. Marc Albrighton (£5.1m) featured only as a second-half replacement for Ghezzal, who had been comfortably one of the worst players in the opening 45 minutes. It was a shame for Algerian, who was making his first start since Gameweek 12 but based on his performance at Everton, he may find it hard to get back in again.

Meanwhile, Hamza Choudhury (£4.3m) made his third start in four matches. The 21-year-old did well in recent wins over Chelsea and Manchester City but was rested for the Gameweek 20 defeat to Cardiff. In defence, Wes Morgan (£4.5m) failed to recover from an illness which saw Jonny Evans (£4.8m) come back in alongside Harry Maguire (£5.4m).

In truth, Leicester’s back-line did not have a lot to deal with from an Everton side that struggled to find any rhythm in the lunch-time kick-off. Richarlison (£7.0m) was deployed on the left-wing, allowing Dominic Calvert-Lewin (£5.3m) to come back in and operate as the centre-forward. Unfortunately for the Toffees, Richarlison did not have his shooting boots on, in a performance reminiscent of his Watford days. Nobody had more shots in the penalty box than him at Goodison Park, but not a single one was on target.

“I felt our team were too nervous and anxious without reason. We are playing a lot of games in a row with no times to rest but that is not an excuse when you miss some simple things. When you play in this way with easy mistakes, the bad things come to you and that is what happened with the goal we conceded. We gave them the chance to do what they came to do.” – Marco Silva

As expected, the rusty Simpson did initially struggle with having to deal with Richarlison and Lucas Digne (£5.2m) on Everton’s left but neither one could record any attacking returns. The Frenchman continues to show amazing creative potential having launched 12 crosses into Leicester’s box, but without Cenk Tosun (£6.5m) or Richarlison at centre-forward, very few of them came to fruition on this occasion. One would expect more presence in the 18-yard-box the next time Everton take to the field, so now does not feel like the time to move away from Digne.

However, it must be noted that expecting clean sheets out of the diminutive left-back is increasingly becoming a tall order. Everton are now without one for eight consecutive Gameweeks. They were hardly attacked from angles by Leicester but were undone by a moment of weakness at the back. As previously mentioned, the game was characterised by sloppy play all over the pitch, and that continued well into the second half, Michael Keane (£5.0m) being punished for his poor control. He stepped out of the defence to gather a loose ball, his first touch letting him down and allowing Pereira able to feed the ball into the space behind the centre-back. That was all Vardy needed to chase it down and net a textbook strike.

“They came to play here with their midfielder line of five players and waiting for one mistake and one transition with Ricardo and Vardy. After that, if you were anxious or nervous, you will be more.” – Marco Silva

Named among the substitutes for Everton was the experienced Seamus Coleman (£5.2m), as Jonjoe Kenny (£4.2m) returned for his first start since Everton’s last meeting with Leicester in Gameweek 8. The right-back had the Toffees’ best chance of the game, hitting the cross-bar in the first half.

Gylfi Sigurdsson (£7.3m) returned to the side, with Bernard (£5.9m) dropping to the bench, and created more chances than any other player at Goodison Park.

Everton XI (4-2-3-1): Pickford; Digne, Zouma, Keane, Kenny; Gomes (Bernard 62′), Gueye; Richarlison, Sigurdsson, Walcott (Tosun 69′); Calvert-Lewin.

Leicester XI (4-3-3): Schmeichel; Chilwell, Maguire, Evans, Simpson; Ndidi, Mendy, Choudhury; Ghezzal (Albrighton 45′), Vardy (D Gray 90+2′), R Pereira.

Will you all be holding wildcards for the double gameweek season?

Last year I dutifully wildcarded to a late DGW (35 I think) team which, collectively, with bench boost, mustered around 40 points.

On paper it was an excellent team, it's just that I pinned all my hopes on one gameweek and any team can have a bad couple of gameweeks, especially if they are crammed into the space of one calendar week. Leicester were particularly terrible and I think I loaded up on three of their players. They were in good form and fell off a cliff, but the point is that I still got in three Leicester players. In hindsight that's pretty silly.

That was a double WC failure for three reasons

    - The pathetic DGW score
    - The fact that the team was not then optimised at all for the final, crucial, three weeks
    - The weeks and weeks of missed opportunities to overhaul and improve my team whilst I doggedly hung on for a monster haul which did not materialise.

I have been wondering if too many of are blindsided by the potential for massive DGW hauls, based on false expectations and past experiences, when the potential for such points bonanzas is in reality much more hit and miss.

That actually led me to think if they are *ever* worth many extra points. Even in those rare seasons when the late-season DGWs DO pay off and we get average (site) scores in the 100-150 range - are these a false return, masking missed opportunities in the 10-15 preceding gameweeks to improve our teams by employing a sensible wildcard?

If 50 points per weeks is the hurdle to clear, is 150 points (+100) even that big a deal? It's the equivalent of 6-7 points per week between now and a putative DGW 35. Are we really telling ourselves that, if we wildcard now, we could not put enough points in the bag to be able to to steal a march on those who do risk it all for a team full of DGW wildcard players?

It's great to look at your points tallies for the weeks gone by and see a big fat ton-and-a-half in a given GW, but what we can never see is the points dropped from hauling an ailing team that far in the season without performing the necessary surgery.

TLDR: I'm not sure it is worth waiting for a late-season DGW to wildcard. If your team needs it, just use it. I'm certainly considering it.

Sometimes it works wonders (16/17 but flattered by Sanchez/Kane hauls), sometimes not so much (17/18)
Wouldn't get fixated on hitting it late tbh, esp as the more people do the same the less of a differential boost/not it will be.

Indeed, 16-17 was a bit of a beast. I'm sure the average is somewhere in the middle. It's very tough to call though.

What we also forget is that, even if we have not wildcarded, our teams will still be similar and our captains will likely be the same.

Last year I wasted it by doing BB in second dgw.
This year I'm going to do reverse.
BB in first dgw & TC in 2nd one.
About WC I am willing to wait till the team needs it. Taken hits few gws ago so no need for WC.

Reverse could work well, though I think it was dependent on the fixtures last year?

There was of course an early DGW around this time when Harry trolled me. I wasted both my BB, TC and second wildcard last year!

            You are right.
But second dgw tends to have roatation risk since everything is done & dusted by then. So BB failed last year. Fielding 11 is easier than 15 😉

WC in the middle of the season is overrated. Better to take hits a few gameweeks in a row to form the team you want.

Even though you are wildcarding, the week after you sit with players you no longer want. Very many things happens now, look at Man U, Salah turnaround, all injuries etc. I mean, you never now how the dgwks will look and my idea is to have all the chips saved. Great that you have ideas about gaining as much points as possible. That is a good start what ever happens! 🙂

This story is not the first time I have heard it.
Any team is planned around a minimum of 6 gameweeks to optimize fixtures, opposition etc.
To think of a WC having only a DGW value is madness IMO.
DGW's are nice but the closeness of fixtures enhance rotation risks; especially in that period and with top players against easy opposition.
I think it best sometimes your team is in a mess and requires major surgery. The decisions is taken away from you.
2 years ago I had tis problem but managed to manipulate 9 DGW players and the SGW players being in good form or having good fixtures. I came 967th that year, the best so far for me.

Very sensible points. To put things in perspective, I went into that double gameweek one point off top 10k, with a WC and bench boost in play and only three GWs left in the season.

I actually dropped in rank after that DGW and finished the season in about 38k. It was an unmitigated disaster!

Easily done and everyone and his dog was doing the same thing.
If I used my FH and WC chip and I was 10k I would expect to drop anyway.
Plan well and the effect is minimal.

I think the Free Hit in a DGW may be better than using the WC. It saves you from taking hits in the run up to it and also means you don’t have players you don’t want afterwards.

A WC imo is best used to make up ground over an extended period of time. I played my first WC in GW16 this season and my rank has improved from 130k to 28k thus far, despite going with Sané and Sterling. I would need an absolute monster DGW score to come anywhere near that kind of steady climb.

Yes, it does, you are right. Although assuming there will be more than one DGW, there will be an opportunity to use the TC and BB then.

Good points. A lot of us used the FH to cover blank fixtures but they have often been fairly rubbish teams. Any good teams involved will probably contain highly-owned players anyway. Maybe it's best to almost write off these blank GWs and plan for the better ones.

That said, I am convinced that BB needs to be used in a DGW, so this needs to be factored in.

That's where your mistake is, I think. The BB is a chip of low value but can cause considerable damage all around it if you focus too much on it. It doesn't need playing in a DGW at all because the aim is for your team to score as many points over 38 weeks as possible, not to get the biggest 'headline' return from the BB.

            1. Eze Really?

So this. BB FH WC 3 weeks. Game is 38 weeks with forward planning.
Rather put forward planning into DGW's etc.
I watch so many players get 15 DGW players, disregarding class players without a DGW and a great fixture and cocking up their next gameweeks to put things right.

Well, this is a useful insight, and nobody can argue with your track record.

I think that the second sentence also chimes with my main argument from the top post.

Whatever happens, I am up for trying something new this year, so early WC with less focus on BB may well be the key.

              1. Ruth_NZ

Yes. The absolute key thing is to detach 2WC from the BB in your mind. For as long as they are de-facto coupled then the 2WC is reduced to essentially being a set-up device for the BB. That really is cart before horse because the 2WC is a far more valuable chip than the BB is.

just play what you see, what you think will get you the most points ... you have to play what you know and not pre-judge strategies without knowledge of the fixtures - but I agree in general with the BB in a double, all things being equal that is, because your players get two bites at the cherry, but of course it depends on the strength of your bench & the fixtures ... and there may be single gameweeks when the stars are aligned when you can just go for it, so just play what you see will get you the most points.

This blind ‘de-coupling’ as a principle is of course tosh because it’s pre-judging a strategy with out knowledge of the fixtures or players 🙂

The "Salah gate" blank GW and lack of a quality TC in any of the doubles skewed last season. I don't think that will happen again.

My highest scoring GW last season was the one where I had 7 players (where Salah scored 4) - lots had saved their free hit for it - and none were rewarded.

I hear you on that last point though. I think an earlier wildcard can be sensible if you've got a clear plan for the doubles. Not this early though... but certainly a few weeks before. I don't want to miss out on the form players again this season just because they don't have doubles.

For me it has always been worth it to wildcard before a double gameweek, but my team has never been doing badly this time of the year.

The mistake i wont do this season however, is to load up on blank gameweekers and keep bad players with a fixture in that week because of one game. (Didn't use free hit in the blank week, used it for a dgw last season.)

As with any WC, it’s success all depends upon the players you get in.

Some on here get double game week fever and try to get 15 double gameweekers with their bench boost, this can work out but rarely does.

I think holding 3 or 4 good single gameweek players in your 11 is the way to go rather than selling them because they don’t have a double ... unless it is GW37 and you can really have a crack at it with just one game week left

It’s all about balance really 🙂

Ha, yes, unless it's DGW 37. Actually, was that the time of the second double last season? Was it

          34 double
          36 blank
          37 double

If it were a 37 double then this makes my rank fall from 10.1k to 38k in two weeks - two weeks for which I had been planning for months - even more astonishing!

Normally, my squad is in pretty good shape by January, so I save my second wildcard for the late DGW period.

This season, however, has turned out differently. I spent a large amount on an elite defence, which was great for the first few game-weeks, but now I find that I have lost too much ground because of the lack of players like Salah, Kane and Pogba. I regretted playing my first wildcard too early (in GW6), so that it was not available to change the shape of my squad in say GW11, when I was still in the top 10k and the fixtures changed.

By GW21 I had even slipped out of the top 100k and major surgery was required, so I played my second wildcard at the earliest opportunity.

Moral: if your squad is in good shape then save your wildcard till later, but if it needs major surgery then don't be afraid to play it earlier.

Ideally we would have minimum three GW’s where teams have double fixtures.

Triple captain requires the least planning of the three chips - just one team with two good fixtures ‘re done, hopefully 15-20 extra points.

Free hit still looks good for whatever GW gets decimated by future DGW fixtures. Assuming only 2 or 3 fixtures go ahead, it brings your team up from 3-5 players to full 11 hopefully. So again hopefully at least 15-20 extra points there, possibly much, much more depending on how things go.

That leaves bench boost, and I think keeping the final wildcard to setup a bench boost in a DGW is as good a strategy as any.

We just need more info on how the GW’s will shape up soon

We already know when, But if you want to know which teams will be affected and how you will have a long wait. Could well be mid-March before it is all announced.

Always a massive temptation to play it in January as historically I blow mine quite early in the season.

I played my first one quite late and even though I’ve capitulated over Xmas, it’s worthwile holding until at least the January transfers are done as we could have some new enables (Solanke, Abraham etc).

I think you can play this one quite early because we all FH it’s so much easier to navigate the end of the season than it used to be and holding back and planning won’t get you as far as yesteryear.

I dont like the "late late wc", like the one you mentioned (35-36ish). Holding it for that long wil surely meen you loose some points along the way.

I prefer to use it as early as possible as long as information about blanks/dgws are available. When they are, I'll look for the strategy which involves activating WC as soon as possible.

So I have decided to wildcard this week after suffering my first price drop of the season. I have been making transfer decisions primarily motivated around money and thinking of building team value for the DGWs and Free hit and consequently I am hovering around 200-350k with a TV of 105.8 (SV of 103.9).

I think I need to make a change for the second half of the season or else I am going to keep hovering in obscurity and will probably be destined for a disappointing few DGWs.

I want to use this wildcard to fix the issues I created with my late GW15 wildcard, and help release me from playing with fear as I have been doing.

        ACD

Auba matching Kane for less money & plays every game, he also rotates with Salah very well C options.

Kane dropping too deep for my liking & we have all seen how the team plays when Son not in it.

      Fabianski

      Salah • Hazard • Rich • Pogba • Pereyra
      Kane

      (Button / Jimènez / Doherty / Kamara)

Biggest priority is to get a Pool defender right?

      Diop ➡️ TAA/Lovren for free?
Will probably have to be Lovren only as TAA will have a price rise pretty soon.

Exact change to do: Kane, Sané and Digne -> Firmino, Salah and TAA (-4).

      Yay or nay?

How do you currently own no Liverpool ha. Wait to Sane plays Liverpool. I quite fancy Kane vs United. I'm even contemplating captaining him

Selling Salah the week before his hatty was the worse move I’ve ever made. I had double pool defence but moved them on for their more difficult run. Now that City will be behind them, looking to load up again

I've benched my two pool defenders this weeks. Anticpiting 25+ points on my bench knowing my current luck. I'd be more tempted to get double defence over Firmino. Think Firmino can be covered for 3m less by them

      Lovren, Kola, Digne, Bennet, WB
      Salah, Haz, Pogba, FAnderson, Hoj
      Auba, Kane, Success

      0.0 its

I'm dropping rank like anything at the moment, am I in desperate need of salah?
      If so how?!

      Fabianski Patricio
      Robertson Digne Doherty stones AWB
      Hazard Eriksen Pogba Anderson Snodgrass
      Kane jimenez wilson

2FTs and 1.1 million in the bank.

Wilson to Kamara and Eriksen to Salah. Loose Stones maybe to fund any more moves

Kane downgrade is easiest for funds

      Hi guys

I need Robertson, Pogba, Hazard, Sterling, Snoddy and Jimenez to score more than 22 points than Bissaka, Anderson and Wilson.

Think I still have a chance to win here?

Door is still wide open imo.
But it really is classic Hazard to blank when you need him the most.

True... I would need at least 10 points from him today

Would you do Son to Pogba before or after GW 22?

After 100% mate. Fair play on having him I would milk him for all hes worth before leaving. I have even considered a one week punt on him.

Thoughts on my team below would be appreciated, Cheers

Save transfers, many games will be played before next gameweek. Chelsea, City three games, Spurs two..

Early thoughts on this lot for next game week?

      2FT 0.1ITB

      Hennessy / Mcarthy
      Doherty / Alonso / Kolasinac /Bennett / AWB
      Salah / Richarlison / Pogba / Anderson / Sane
      Kane / Rashford / Kamara

I would like to get Hazard in ideally.

Well, I'd say maybe Rash+Sane->Hazard+Ings? Not sure about cash.
        Pogba is enough United imo.

Id say sane and alonso - hazard and digne.

Alonso in my eyes has passed his sell by date and Man City nearly have a full strength squad so sane playing time will be reduced even more as the weeks go by.

      Which move to make?

      A. Anderson + Son -> Pogba + B.Silva
      B. Mitrovic + Son -> Firmino + Deulofeu
      C. Anderson + Son + Mitrovic -> Firmino + Lingard + Perreyra

Already have Salah, Hazard, Auba. No united, city or spurs players if I remove son.
