The release of Fantasy Premier League’s price list for 2019/20 could see Seamus Coleman (£5.5m) become the go-to Everton defender over the summer.

Lucas Digne (£6.0m) had originally been the target for the Toffees’ appealing early-season fixtures, but many were a little surprised that he received such a hefty price-tag.

In this latest Members article, we weigh up the two Everton full-backs against each other to see which can provide the best value from Gameweek 1 of the new campaign.

As this uses data from our Members area, you will have to sign up in order to view it.

What effect do the new prices have?

A muscle injury could rule Serge Aurier out of the remaining AFCoN games. "I think it may be over because I felt something. It may be a tear," revealed the Ivory Coast defender following a 1-0 defeat by Morocco.

    Anyone want Trippier?

Yes at £5.5 it's good value for Trippier, opening the season with Villa at home also.

Vardy. He's the new Suarez in Rodgers system. Playing him as he should. Just look at his scores from the point Rodgers took over. No more reasons needed.

      KDB

      Reasoning:
1.City's all round goal threat. 2.He also had a lot less football than an aging Vardy last season and coming in fresh at the start of the season is massive.
3.With BSilva in the side, who typically assists the assister, I can see huge returns this season for KDB.

There aren't 3 Leicester players I badly want.

On a scale of 1 to Sanchez....
How bad would it be if I chose
    Allison + Coleman
    Over
    Ryan + Robertson

(Have TAA & Salah from pool and Digne from Everton)

The thinking behind this is that Everton's fixtures are so good for so long that over that period of time that combo could outweigh the prospects of Robertsons attacking returns while still picking up 2 pool clean sheets when they happen)

This article needs to consider a full season's worth of data. Digne has more than double the FPL goal involvement and blows Coleman out of the water for chances created and big chances created. Coleman gets into the box and shoots more, but Digne is worth the extra 0.5 for me.

Big difference in key stats when you look at the entire season as well. Coleman has had 9 shots in the box in 29 starts - less than 1 every 3 games - so he's not even that attacking (although his pen box touches are much better).

I think Coleman’s first half of he season has to be viewed through the lens that he was a player returning from one of the most horrific leg breaks ever seen in the game

2019 data is probably more representative of a Coleman who was slowly but surely getting back to his full potential, physically & mentally

If Mr. Gueye stays I can’t wait to own them both

For my money - Robbo, TAA, Digne, Coleman will likely be the best quartet to emerge from Merseyside since The Beatles 🙂

More data = more reliable conclusions.

You could argue that Digne needs mitigating factors in the first half of the season too because he was adapting to a completely new league.

        1. Maximus Bonimus Pointimus
          • 16 Years

More “good” data = more reliable conclusions

All players recover differently psychologically & physically from catastrophic injuries - but I’m not sure the first games back post traumatic leg break are really representative of a player’s “true” potential and therefore I’m not sure the 2018 data is as “good” as the more recent 2019 data

Interestingly Digne actually scored pretty similarly in FPL points in the first/second halves of the season (74/84) but the Burley 17 pointer is hugely boosting his output in the first half so he too looks to have a huge improvement in consistency in the second half of the season as he ramped up into the PL

It just wasn’t enough to outscore Coleman despite playing more games interestingly.

Interesting articles & discussions on same:

Could he make a mockery of that price?

Difficult to say at the moment. In the latter part of the season Poch was playing him deeper, which is no good from a FPL point of view. However, if they get this expensive new guy into midfield it might push Alli up, making him more viable. Need to see how pre-season goes.

No, hes overpriced, he should have been 8.0 at most. I most likely wouldnt have him even at 7.5. Hes been poor for two seasons now and frequently plays deeper than he used to as well. His main role is to bully the opposition when they have the ball these days.

Great article guys - I picked up on the intruiging similarity in Digne & Coleman’s 2019 FPL output a couple of weeks ago & we had a hot topic on it

It’s great to see it expanded into this level of detail - and for me Coleman has all the right FPL boxes ticked, as does Digne - a very viable double up if Gueye stays

The side by side comparison of them both in the members area is something I’d recommend folks do - some interesting findings

Same back 4 for me right now. All depends on three budget strikers performing well enough, generally we've only had two that have smashed it whereas more midfielders.

Slight question marks on Heaton as some think he’s not nailed.

Also absolutely awful strikers in FPL terms. Too much invested in defence.

Too many people are investing big in defence and neglecting the goal scoring positions, which is where the major FPL points come from.

          • 13 Years

Looks very good to me. Many people are opting for strong defences - no need to be stuck in the past.
Heaton can be Pope - both are good 4.5 options.

My issues are whether or nor Trippier stays, and if Bilva and Redmond are good FPL value.
Whatever formation you use - and flexibility is good, you have a lot of cash sat on your bench. I might sacrifice Long for 4.5 and upgrade a midfielder.

Jota and Deulofeu got their points as mids last season.

This season, even if they score the same amount their goals are now worth less points since they are now reclassified as strikers.

Your team is way too heavily over reliant on the defenders every week. You still need balance in FPL, that remains whatever year you’re playing it in.

With Aurier reportedly now injured I’m hoping Trippier stays and is nailed for the first few weeks of the season. I’m a Saints season ticket holder and Redmond was epic last season and Hasenhüttl has been telling local press that he will play Redmond in the number 10 role this season which enhances his potential to return points. I rate both Jota and Delo.

Too much rotation risk overall in your team I think. Jota, Deu, Long, Trippier, and to a lesser amount Laporte, Bilva and Redmond. Having too many rotation risk or players who might play 30-60 mins instead of full games is a recipe for disaster. Having a few of them is ok, but you are pushing it too far.

If Tielemans comes in at 6.5 he's straight in my team. I very much doubt it though. Think he'll be 7, but still would be tempted at that price too

      Brooks.

However, a £4.5/5.0m mid is, at some point this season, going to emerge likely from one of the 3 promoted teams.

When their fixtures turn, someone like O’Connell (def) or Norwood (mid) at SHU could well come on our radars. They’re good players who could well make the transition once they get up to speed in the Prem.

I love the feel of 5-2-3 so much it’s going to take an earthquake to shift me from it come GW1.

There are heaps of interesting 6-7 players who could match the subprime boys but they’re all in defence or attack - none much in midfield. I’m seeing a logic in loading up in them.

My current back 6 is this. I’m aiming for a spread of teams looking for consistent cs and reliable attacking returns

    Ederson
    Robbo VVD Digne Luiz Trippier

That leaves me finding a front 5. These are my favourite 4 options right now

    A - the obvious captains

    Sterling Mo
    Wilson King Deu

B - Zaha to Arsenal and Auba out

    Sterling Zaha
    Kane Laca DCL

C - Vardy to explode and all in on Bournemouth in weeks 1 and 2

    Sterling Fraser
    King Wilson Kane

D Kane and Auba rotating captains (compromise Coleman over Digne)

    Siggy KdB
    Kane Auba King

I'm enjoying my 5-2-3 as well.
Currently Siggy and Zaha in the middle.
Up top Kane, Rashford and Jiminez. Could change Rashford to Vardy if Zinky is a starter though.

        Actually no

If I go with a big 6 at the back I’ll be holding for a while - the rationale for having them is mid term they are gold and will outpace bandwagon mids.

Also with a front 5 there are heaps of options. Most in putative set ups involve Kane and Sterling as captain choices - it’s not hard to move the rest around.

I’m unlikely to go Mo early at all - unless he goes completely ballistic - which I very much doubt after Afcon I won’t be fazed. Nearly all sides I’ve seen with both him and Sterling are in effect 10 nan set ups.

I did a bit of analysis and 5-2-3 has, over the last three seasons, been the least optimal formation if you go by player value. Every one of the last three it came out bottom in my research

Mids get extra point for cs and every goal. Therefore I see no value having three forwards. Yet having a playing fwd bench fodder costs more than 4.5 🙁

        We’ll see.

Last season had a very different pricing set up imo. In essence all the budget defenders, mids and gks have been bumped up 0.5 while the premiums have been capped. That’s what has pushed me here.

If these prices were available I’d agree. But they aren’t

        Guaita 4.5
        Valery 4.5
        Boly 4.5
        Brooks 6.0
        Barnes 5.5
        JWP 5.5

The list goes on. Yes one or two budget miracles will appear but 3-4-3 3-5-2 are much less viable imo. 4 premiums at the back anyway.

(My set up isn’t of course a season hold - and all analyses I see tend to miss this - the best week 1 to 8 set up may be suboptimal long term but gold short to mid term.

Maybe my opnion is not popular, but every time im drafting 5 at the back im getting bored. It mean that you trying to win the game from a defensivly strategy and looking games in anticipations for no goals (if you go with no LIV attacker you also want they wont go mental). Its like Atletico madrid - Real madrid final when the score was 1-0 then they play so defensivly and real put them 4.

But with Robbo Digne Luiz TAA Trippier cs is only half the story.

The obvious counter is that if you pick sub premium defenders they are the ones who bore as they have only one route to points

King has pens though, so factor in that, with VAR, King May get a lot closer to Wilson’s tally now.

With Digne monopolising Everton’s corners and DFK’s, and with Siggy having missed 3 penalties last season - is there a danger his output might actually not improve (or even regress?) without the set piece supply?

Is he basically relying solely on G & A from play now?

That’s kind of my thinking - I wonder does Silva (or he himself?) want him taking them with that type of record?

When i’ve thought of Siggy in the past the first thing that springs to mind is “deadball specialist” - i wonder will he get the supply he needs or does he now rely more on G & A from play?
