Southampton 1-2 Liverpool

Goals: Danny Ings (£6.0m) | Sadio Mané (£11.5m), Roberto Firmino (£9.5m)

Assists: James Milner (£5.5m), Mané

Bonus Points: Mané x3, Firmino x2, Ings x1

Liverpool’s performance at Southampton on Saturday proved right those Fantasy Premier League managers who had concerns after the Super Cup final.

Having played 120 minutes in Istanbul midweek, the Reds probably did not deserve to take all three points from the Saints as they did not play to their usual high standards.

That led to Mohamed Salah (£12.5m) recording his first blank of the 2019/20 season at just the second hurdle.

The Egyptian was largely anonymous at the St. Mary’s Stadium, only finding himself presented with one decent chance on Saturday afternoon.

After making a trademark run cutting in from the right, Salah bore down on Angus Gunn‘s (£4.5m) goal, only for Southampton’s shot-stopper to deflect the effort away with his feet.

Salah was pulled off in the 78th minute at Southampton

Despite Klopp’s insistence that a 120-minute outing would not hamper Salah in Gameweek 2, Liverpool’s manager took the player off in the 78th minute and replaced him with Divock Origi (£5.6m).

Whether Fantasy managers should have any lasting concerns about Salah remains to be seen though.

It will not be every week that the Egyptian will be forced into extra-time midweek before a Saturday Premier League match.

Furthermore, with a home match against Arsenal next, a side who Liverpool scored five against at Anfield last season, it probably does not serve well to make any kneejerk reactions to Salah’s Gameweek 2 blank.

However, a 14-point haul for Sadio Mané (£11.5m) might just give some Fantasy managers itchy feet.

The former Southampton man returned to the starting line-up after his late return from African Cup of Nations action over the summer and got himself a goal and assist against his former employers.

The Senegalese international played only 103 minutes in the Super Cup final, which might have helped his cause, although in truth he wasn’t any more involved in the Liverpool action than Salah.

Yes, it was his excellent curled effort from range that gave Liverpool the lead, but he, like Salah, was also not at his best in a game largely dominated by Southampton.

Firmino scored what proved to be the winner for Liverpool but they were far from their best at Southampton

The same goes for Roberto Firmino (£9.5m), who outscored Salah in this game but did not necessarily offer much more than him across the course of the game.

We pointed out in Gameweek 1 that the Brazilian had registered more shots than Salah against Norwich, but it was the Egyptian who had more efforts on goal in this game.

Southampton asked plenty of questions of the European champions in the opening 45 minutes, Nathan Redmond (£6.5m) exploiting space on Trent Alexander-Arnold’s (£7.0m) side of the pitch.

The former Norwich midfielder saw a fierce effort go wide early on before Che Adams (£6.0m) dragged just beyond the far post from a corner.

Goalkeeper Adrian (£4.5m), who came through an ankle injury scare, was very much at the heart of Southampton’s attacking play for much of the game.

Early on, his clearance was charged down by James Ward-Prowse (£6.0m), setting the tone for the afternoon.

For long periods, the former West Ham man kept his side in the game, his most impressive save a point-blank stop from a Maya Yoshida (£4.5m) header after a Southampton corner.

Adrian was at the heart of the narrative for Liverpool’s win over Southampton

Adrian also made some good saves in the second half too, but ultimately it was exclusively his fault when Danny Ings (£6.0m) scored in the 83rd minute.

In almost a carbon copy of what happened with Ward-Prowse in the first half, his attempted clearance was charged down by the forward, who did not have to add a second touch to see the ball roll into an empty net.

“Yes (I have spoken to Adrian): ‘You finally arrived, welcome!’ Ali did the same. Obviously, it’s a goalie thing at Liverpool, no problem with that as long as we win the games. All good.” – Jurgen Klopp

The fact that Adrian allowed himself to get closed down on two occasions will not inspire confidence in owners of Liverpool defensive assets, especially those with a double-up in this department. That said, Klopp did insist that his team played him too many short passes today, in light of his recent injury. Maybe a return to full fitness for Gameweek 3 might help Adrian somewhat.

“Adrian had a swollen ankle and we played too many balls back to him in that period. I was happy with everything he did today, all the saves, all that stuff. The other players have to then feel more the responsibility for the build-up and cannot give all the balls back to him and hope the pain killers still help or whatever. I don’t think the goal was because of that, but a few other balls were. He is completely good with his feet. If you would have seen his ankle on Thursday after we left the plan then you would say even the pass before the [Southampton] goal was better than you would have expected! It is all fine.” – Jurgen Klopp

Owners of key Liverpool defensive assets were left disappointed on Saturday afternoon

Southampton burst into a late fight-back and probably should have levelled things up, Ings screwing wide from short-range shortly after busting Liverpool’s clean sheet.

Either way, after what Norwich achieved at Anfield in Gameweek 1, Southampton’s domination of this game will add further worry to those with Liverpool defenders.

Unfortunately for those invested in Andrew Robertson (£7.0m), Alexander-Arnold, Virgil van Dijk (£6.5m), or a combination, Liverpool did not get enough going to soften the blow of losing the clean sheet with some attacking returns.

Those concerned about the double-up especially will perhaps not be too excited about Arsenal coming to Anfield in Gameweek 3.

    Are these sensible moves?
    1FT, 1.0ITB
    Foster/4.0
    Rob VVD Digne AWB
    Salah Siggy Martial Perez
    Kane King
    (Lund Donk Greenwood)

    (1) VVD (or Digne if injury significant) to Laporte

    (2) King out for a hit - probably to Jota if he makes it through Thursday night ok

My other worry is no Sterling so I could also do
    (3) Salah to Sterling for a hit

    Alternatively, WC?

A nice little tactical piece on why Sadio Mané is now playing more as a number 9 as he occupies more space across the front line.

Hmmm not sure I agree with this. Liverpool's midfield isn't great going forward, that's why having Firmino central is so useful.

Salah was much, much further forward than Mane against Saints. He was playing as a striker during the defensive phase at times.

I've suspected for a while that Klopp plays them differently depending on opposition, and the article you posted is starting to convince me. Makes them a little hard to predict.

When's Mendy back? Zinchenko should be safe until then I guess, but Laporte has played Left back too so he's probably a safer pick

No need for Mendy to be back to see Zinchenko benched, pep could easily play Laporte there, or Cancelo. That's my worry

I'd want to be 100% sure Zink isn't carrying an injury; however if you're on a WC you can put him in now and change before deadline.

Even without an injury, Zin can be benched. But also the extra mil can upgrade somewhere else

I did and I'm still pretty set on that. City defence will keep the most clean sheets but that doesn't make those particular players better than the two options I mentioned. VVD and Coleman attacking returns win out.

Interesting outlook, the fact that you know city would keep most clean sheets, yet you prefer others for a potential attacking returns. I think Laporte on corners is a decent threat, or Zin from crosses if he managed to keep place

I have Zinchenko, and I don't like it. It feels like a transfer waiting to happen. I'm never convinced when I actually see him play either. Cancelo can also play left side, so when fit that'll be further competition.

So yeah, if you can find the extra mill, go Laporte.

I have Zinch with at least 0.5 ITB and a good sub always ready for when Pep decides Zinch isn't worth the steady starts anymore (or Mendy's return). Digne's presence in my squad puts me off a double-up with Coleman, although it doesn't look so bad an idea now with Liverpool's defensive issues. Laporte just feels too expensive because of other places I'll spend the 0.5 in. I know he'll get FPL points, though

Was pretty reluctant about Robbo + Locadia to Zinch + Pukki last week. Did it before Pukki rose to 6.6. Stunned by how well it worked

Already done Wilson to Barnes at 6.5. 2.5 ITB, expecting Barnes to start paying off from GW5 though. Now I'm here thinking of losing TAA (and Trossard) as well, but holding back because I see him as a midfielder and those are some good fixtures for attacking returns... So, no Son for me. Plus it would mean another GW of -4 or more, and I'd rather not

Fingers crossed. Here come the Son hat trick and TAA bench

Pope; TAA, Zinch, Digne (yeah... I think he'll be fine); (S)terling, Salah, Martial, Trossard, Perez; Barnes, Pukki
Woodman; Montoya (in case Digne isn't fine), Lund; Gallagher

Gut says -8 and (S)on. Logic says Barnes is enough of a transfer this week. Looking to work Pepe in for GW5 with FTs. Would probably go with logic

Slightly left-field, but I wish I could see your bench before suggesting this:

VVD to Montoya now, then your 4.5 mid to Cantwell for GW4 (play him and bench Montoya), then your 4.0/4.5 D to Lowton/Pieters GW5. This should leave you with some change in the bank for other moves

Thing is, I plan too much. So what I'm suggesting won't please everyone 😀

Hmmm wijnaldum, Townsend and Murray looking the dodgy picks there. Trouble is they are all cheap so hard to manoeuvre money to get a big hitter like sterling or kane which I think your team could do with.... think you could do with spending less on your bench players as well

Is it a viable strategy to do Salah to Mane if i'm captaining Sterling and a Liverpool attacker who's playing at home? Gameweeks 7 and 9 only midterm fixtures when both play away, you can captain against Sheffield and Palace those weeks.

Nothing is going to change regarding Salah, he's still going to be in the race for the golden boot and get big hauls, it's kind of a sideways move in my opinion

True, and even if i captain Sterling Salah will still get more points compared to Mane. A sideways move saving 1m doesn't sound that bad though.

Personally I still think Salah is better pick... share of set pieces and Pena when Milner is off the pitch should make him better value... if you won't captain him then maybe it makes more sense to sell him but he will still be a hugely popular captain pick so the safe option is just to keep him.

It's a one-week wild card. After that GW your squad goes back to what you had before.

In a free hit you can make as many transfers as you like but the players are only in your team for one GW. Your team returns back to what it was the next week.

      6 years?

You get to pick a new team for one week. After the gameweek your team reverts back to your original team, and team value changes according to your old team.

Morning lads. Have 2ft on hand and will look to take a hit this week I think...

    Perez > McGinn
Wilson > Pukki (not perfect timing but need to release the funds and want him in a couple weeks anyway)
    Fraser > KDB

    Ryan
    TAA Robertson Zichenko Digne
    Salah McGinn KDB Sterling
    Jota Pukki

    4.0 Dendoncker Lundstram Greenwood

    In the right direction? Cheers

Is Moura worth keeping 1 more week? I was going to sell for Pulisic or Martial but after yesterday's goal and the way Newcastle are defending, he could score well even if he comes off the bench.

Silva on Digne's injury: "We hope nothing really special. He started to feel a bit more tired and gave the sign to me to make the change."

Sounds like he should be fine then. But strange he was sub-worthy tired at 70 minutes at this stage of the season.

Trouble is the context added here from the Everton site saying it's a muscular problem

“We hope it is nothing really special,” Silva told evertontv.

“He started to feel a bit more tired [in the muscle] and gave the sign to me to make the change.
