Manchester City dismantled Brighton and Hove Albion in a 4-0 victory on Saturday, with Sergio Aguero (£12.0m) stealing the headlines with a brace and an assist to send a timely reminder to Fantasy managers of his explosive potential.

We round up the key talking points in our latest Scout Notes article below.

Manchester City 4-0 Brighton & Hove Albion

  • Goals: Sergio Aguero (£12.0m) x2, Kevin de Bruyne (£9.7m), Bernardo Silva (£7.9m)
  • Assists: David Silva x2 (£7.4m), de Bruyne, Aguero
  • Bonus Points: Aguero x3, de Bruyne x2, David Silva x1

Aguero, owned by just 21.4% of managers, put in a dominant display at the Etihad to secure a 16-point score, with the most captained player of the week, Raheem Sterling (£12.3m), blanking to the disappointment of his 47.3% of owners.

Aguero’s brace against Brighton brings his tally to six goals in City’s first four Premier League matches, and despite the hat-trick from Sterling in Gamweek 1 against West Ham, it is difficult to look past the Argentine as being the Citizens’ primary source of goals in 2019/20.

This presents a serious dilemma to managers already in ownership of Sterling and Kevin de Bruyne (£9.7m), who also delivered a sensational performance with a goal and an assist, with tripling up on City attacking coverage representing a potential overload despite their promising fixtures and imperious offensive form.

De Bruyne was in exceptional nick at the Etihad against Brighton, with the Belgian midfielder exhibiting touches, through-balls and all-round attacking player that attests to him being City’s best player, though remaining fit will be pivotal if the playmaker is to make a serious impact for the Citizens in 2019/20.

With City’s defensive unit returning a second clean sheet of the season against Brighton, and the highly valuable Oleksandr Zinchenko (£5.5m) holding his spot in Guardiola’s first-choice backline, retaining a form of defensive coverage from City is also appealing, and therefore the aforementioned triple-up would not only be costly but logistically troublesome, too.

Selecting two of Sterling, de Bruyne and Aguero over the coming Gameweeks will be a serious test for managers who are looking to utilise the goalscoring form of the Citizens, but there is no doubt that these are three players in notable form who are likely to propel City to the top of the Premier League table.

Combine this selection dilemma with Guardiola’s notorious rotation roulette and selecting the right City assets who are not only in form but who are likely to start ahead of a promising run of fixtures is where ground will be seriously made or lost for managers with regards to assets from City.

Bernardo Silva (£7.9m) also chipped in with a goal during his substitute appearance after being assisted by Aguero to complete the rout, whilst David Silva (£7.4m) contributed two exquisite assists to also remind managers of his potential for attacking returns, with the Silva duo highlighting the sheer depth of options at Pep Guardiola’s disposal.

City were rampant against Graham Potter’s Brighton, though a devastating injury to Aymeric Laporte (£6.5m), who was replaced by Fernandinho (£5.3m) in the first half, could curtail the Frenchman’s season – causing a forced transfer for the 8% of managers who own the City centre-back.

The question also has to be asked about whether Laporte’s period of unavailability also makes City’s other FPL defenders less appealing as a result, given that he has been the bedrock of the champions’ backline for the last 12 months.

Speaking after the game, Guardiola said:

I think he’s gone to hospital. It doesn’t look good. I don’t know right now what he has done, but we will know tomorrow.

We’ll see. They’re diagnosing what he has right now. I’m waiting for the doctor to call me. He might be out for a while.

Laporte’s injury, combined with the ever-changing power dynamic in City’s frontline, is the main takeaway from their impressive victory over Brighton, though the Seagulls, despite exhibiting promising early-season form, now find themselves winless in three.

There were plenty of encouraging signs from this defeat, however, with Leandro Trossard (£6.0m) getting into a series of threatening positions but being unable to convert two excellent chances either side of half-time.

Adam Webster (£4.4m) started in place of Shane Duffy (£5.0m) though the £20m summer signing from Bristol City was unable to prevent the barrage of City attacks as Potter’s side, for all their admirable attacking ambition, became unstuck at the home of the champions.

This was an afternoon that belonged to the imperious Aguero, but the decisions that Fantasy managers now have to make regarding attacking coverage from City alongside the devastating injury to Laporte may lead to the deployment of Wildcards for those looking to solve the problems arising from the defensive injuries and sensational form from City’s attacking options.

No Liverpool defence and I have Laporte and AWB with 1FT and nothing in the bank

    A) Laporte - VVD
    B) Laporte - Otamendi
    C) Laporte and AWB - Trent and 4.5 (-4)

I worry TAA owners will start missing out on a game every so often when the CL starts, so prefer VVD and Robbo

Yep, I can see him being the highest scoring defender by a margin this year, even if he misses 5 or 6 games.

It's my first season - had quite good start but it was just luck. I'm too much dependent on Everton and not happy with my midfielders. And with Laporte injury I'm thinking on wildcard activation.

    Here is the squad:
    Pickford / Button
Digne / Coleman / van Dijk / Laporte (injury) / Bednarek
Westwood / Kante (injury) / Sterling / Milivojevic / Lamela
    Pukki / Kane / Jimenez

I have only 1 free transfer and looks like even taking -4 would not be enough.

What's your advice? Should I go for wildcard after international break or manage it somehow and wait a little bit?

Yeah, use ur wildcard, try to rebuild a squad.

      KDB/Sterling/TAA/Salah - default picks
Also Lundstram, Cantwell, Pope/Ryan - cheap and good
      Haller, Barnes good FWDs
Don't waste too much in defence, Digne/Taa+City def is enough

It would but he’d need to be putting up a lot more than last year. If you think just playing plus a few clean sheets is 80 points he only got 55-60 odd points from attacking returns last year, to uplift that to 90-100 is big

Would presumably be based on a full season as the main creator in a Rodgers team, as opposed to the dour Puel. Having said that I have no idea of what his PPG was under Rodgers last season compared to before.

    Pope (Button)
    TAA, Digne, AWB (Lundstram, Hanley)
    Sterling, KDB, Maddison, Grealish (Cantwell)
    Aguero, Haller, Pukki

0.0 itb, 1FT - planning to roll the transfer. Grealish could be a problem, but was robbed of an assist this week and has 4 great fixtures in his next 5, so I'm likely to keep him for now.

Maddison had a disappointing week, and has some tough fixtures, but he was involved in two of the goals, I think I'll want him long-term so willing to be patient.

No Salah against Newcastle is obviously a concern, but triple City attack against Norwich and Watford is too tasty to mess with! So I'm not bringing him in just yet.

Probably going to captain Sterling over Aguero (got it right with Aguero this week), and might play Lundstram over AWB, if that's not too crazy?

    Any suggestions?

Yeah, i don't have Salah too and thinking about bring him in, as i have Kane and feel that he and Spurs are in bad form now (just don't rated Spurs)
But i think Newcastle will be so so deep in defence and Pool are lacking of creativity, only TAA+Robertson crosses, it's just not enough to put a lot of goals in that kind of matches. Corners/free kicks, counterattacks/transitions and lucky deflections or crosses - that's all Liverpool could do vs defence like that. So i don't think they can score more than 2, especially after IB

I brought him in on wc after Klopps quotes, which indicated a while, and others suggested between gw6 and 8. If i get Newcastle and SHU i would be happy with my decision. But make sure you have a goalie who plays, so the hurry to bring in someone when Ali is back. Complete healing of a calf strain is 6weeks, so around 20-25sepetember, which coincides with Chelsea game or SHU 28, i think Klopp will be cautious and wil wait one week extra, so for me, even Leicester could be Adrian.
But, since you´ve not got him in now it hardly seems worth it unless Klopp says he will be out longer (sy gw10 or something).

0.2 short of Ceballos & Vardy > KDB & Barnes. Ah well, gunna have to think of another way to get in KDB.

    .....................Ryan
    Robbo - VVD - Zinc - Digne - Lundy
    Mo - Sterling - Mount - Ceb - Donker
    .........Vardy - Pukki - Greeny

Just get a cheaper striker than Barnes I guess. Vardy definitely has to be used to fund it, unless you're willing to risk a straight swap with Sterling. Wesley has decent fixtures. Wood is cheap now and has the same fixtures as Barnes so could be an option.

Or trade Mount instead and Ceb.

Feels like this is peak bullishness on TAA.

He's a great option, but not significantly better than Robbo or VVD IMO

Yup, Robertson+VVD also value, but TAA is worth the 0.1/0.5 over them

Do you reckon Joel Matip is nailed and TAA will rotate with Gomez for some games? xxx

    1. Differentiator

Only nailed are VVD and Robbo, maybe Robbo not even nailed in the occasional game if he's tired as Milner can slot in

Matip and TAA fairly nailed I would say.

But you’ll definitely see Gomez nicking games off the pair of them from time to time I would say.

The definition of a sideways transfer I’d say.

Don’t get me wrong, I’ve got Robbo and I wish I’d gone with TAA. But not worth a transfer as it could easily be Robbo with the assist next week

Stones is his nailed partner when fit

Fernandinho/Walker would drop in to partner the other if one of those two isn't fit. Dino and Walker aren't first-choice CBs. Maybe in ultra-congested fixtures to rest one of 'em, but the fully fit CB in the club at the moment is Otamendi, then Stones as the nailed partner when he gets over the niggle

Laporte's most likely out for 2+ months... Spot diagnosis when I watched what happened to him. I could be wrong though

Thinking of going pukki-less on a wc, dont fancy double norwich with cantwell
    playing 3 5 2
    Pope / fodder
TAA / Digne / zinky (lundstrom - kelly)
    Salah / Sterling / KDB / James / Cantwell
    Haller / Abraham (ayew)

    1. AndyCook

Worse than that is playing Cantwell every week

      1. AndyCook

Or maybe you are rotating - if so stick him straight on the bench

Cantwell can rotate with ayew or lundstrom.
It's a bit of a risk, but have a feeling tammy and haller will both be better long term options over pukki.

Zinchenko... lots of talk about him being rotated out
    Donkey to Cantwell?

    Pope
    TAA zinch digne Azpilicueta!?
    Salah Sterling Lanzini Martial
    Haller Pukki

    Heaton Lundstram Donks Gwood.

Maybe VAR should have been trialed for season or two in FA Cup & Mickey Mouse Cup prior to being introduced in PL.
No penalty for West Ham and no goal for Villa yesterday makes VAR people look more incompetent than british PM's trying to navigate brexit.

A lot of people caution about TAA missing some games, but forget that aslong as he doesnt come on as a sub, you have autosubs points to add to his total.

    Robbo 38 games - 200 points
TAA 32 games 200 points + 6 autosub player points

If Trent’s PPG is better surely he wins out overall as an option regardless of a bit of rotation?

    1. fitzy
      • 14 Years

      TAA owner here.

Yes if you believe he'll have a better PPG then he's the better option. So far has been 4 games where it looks like Robbo has been unlucky and TAA lucky. Should be more even in the long term.
