Everton take on Wolverhampton Wanderers in the penultimate Premier League fixture before the international break.

Goals have been hard to come by for these two sides this season, with no club having scored fewer than the Toffees – although Marco Silva’s side, of course, have played a game fewer than 16 other teams.

Wolves themselves have only hit the back of the net on two occasions, one of which was a stoppage-time penalty from Raul Jimenez (£7.4m) that salvaged a point against Burnley last weekend.

Jimenez starts this afternoon but for once he won’t be joined by his regular striker partner Diogo Jota (£6.4m), who is only among the substitutes.

Jota fails to start a Premier League match for the first time since Gameweek 21 of last season.

Jonny (£5.5m) and Joao Moutinho (£5.5m) are also rotated from the Europa League tie against Torino on Thursday, while Matt Doherty (£6.0m) misses out altogether.

Patrick Cutrone (£5.8m) is handed his first league start for Nuno Espirito Santo’s side, while Adama Traore (£5.0m) and Ruben Vinagre (£4.4m) are trusted with the wing-back roles.

After being patient with his new signings so far, Marco Silva gives full league debuts to three of his summer recruits: Moise Kean (£6.8m), Alex Iwobi (£5.9m) and Fabian Delph (£5.4m).

Dominic Calvert-Lewin (£5.9m), Bernard (£6.5m) and Morgan Schneiderlin (£4.5m) are the men to make way from the Gameweek 3 starting XI but Seamus Coleman (£5.5m) keeps his place at right-back, with Djibril Sidibe (£5.4m) only on the bench.

Lucas Digne (£6.1m), Jordan Pickford (£5.6m), Leander Dendoncker (£4.5m) and Jimenez are the only players on show at Goodison Park who are owned by more than 10% of FPL bosses, with Digne the most-popular option.

While goals have been hard to come by, the ball hasn’t been flying into the net at the other end: no club has kept more Premier League clean sheets than the Toffees (two) this season, while no side has shipped fewer goals than Everton or Wolves (two each) – although they are, of course, a game behind.

Everton XI: Pickford, Digne, Mina, Keane, Coleman, Delph, Gomes, Iwobi, Sigurdsson, Richarlison, Kean.

Wolves XI: Patrício, Bennett, Coady, Boly, Traoré, Dendoncker, Rúben Neves, Saïss, Rúben Vinagre, Jiménez, Cutrone.

Either Digne, Zinchenko, TAA or VVD. Digne less likely to get CS points than the others, IMO.

Two liverpool is a little much this season imo. Don’t look as good defensivly as last year so would rather get rid of vvd.

I don't know; Liverpool is a much better team, and that alone makes them likely to get CS's long term. Even more so when Alisson is back.

I think they will get CS at well, but not as many as last season. Trent is probably going to get more assist and the odd goal, whereas with VVD you are mainly hoping for CS and a goal here and there (unpredictable his 4 seasons in pl he has gotten 4,0,1,3 so hard to predict).

VVD is more exspensive than Digne and everton kept a lot of CS late past season and Digne has really good attcking numbers for a fullback. Since you already have trent I would therefore loose vvd

I can understand that argument for sure. It's just that every time I watch Everton they feel like a team that can concede at any moment. You're really relying on Digne's attacking potential.

Guess whoever I downgrade in order to get Haller, I'm bound to be punished…

This is mostly true. But Iwobi and Kolasinac developed a decent partnership at Arsenal. With that said, Iwobi may dent parts of what made Digne valuable prior to Iwobi’s arrival.

Have those suggesting that City’s defence could be a write off now Laporte us injured, forgotten that Otamendi and Stones were the two mainstays at CB for the majority of the 2017/18 season?

They still present value and have more chance of a clean sheet than most teams.

    1. Richd
      • 13 Years
      6 years, 3 months ago

Also the reason that City keep CS is very little to do with their actual defenders. It's the fact they hold the ball and it's only counter attacks they get broken down on, and that's rare enough.

      1. @persecuted_by_mods
          6 years, 3 months ago

While I agree the tactics and players ahead of the defenders are important I wouldn't say CS are very little to do with the defense (especially Ederson if you include the Keeper as part of the defence)

Yea, remember when the Barca defenders under Pep in the Xavi/Iniesta/Busquets era were getting plaudits. In reality they never had to defend at all. This City team is like that just not quite as extreme

            • 8 Years

They certainly have less to do than many other defenders!

But I’d say that this season they’ll have their work cut out for them.

Otamendi is a good shout and excellent value at 5.4. Zinchenko is good. To be honest Walker can play CB now that Cancelo is here. Walker being the most expensive at 6.0.

They did it without Laporte before. They’ll do it again.

      2. F4L
        • 10 Years

for sure. Can see them conceding some goals from teams that press their back 4 however, neither Otamendi or Stones are that comfortable on the ball

        1. aspilcueta
          • 8 Years

Pep might have to adjust his tactics slightly to accommodate this.

Personally I don’t rate Stones at all. He’s the weakest link in that defence by far. Otamendi makes mistakes but I’m sure if they can get regular game time again they’ll get more comfortable again.

At some point (around now) I was going to get Sterling or Kun which meant losing Vardy. Already have KDB, Salah, Pukki and quite an expensive defence including double Pool.

Now not sure what to do. Is Vardy a keeper? In which case need to downgrade some defence to get Sterling/Kun.

Any thoughts. Not doing too barley to date after good captain choices too 350k.

Be interested to know if Joe is still shipping Vardy on Wildcard if he does now WC.

I'm not sure I would like 2 mid priced midfielders in a 4-4-2 but guess that's the price you pay having Kun.

No Sterling OR Salah would make me very uneasy. Personally, upgrade Mane to Salah and downgrade Aguero to Aubameyang. Arsenal have great fixtures around the corner.

What is the situation with City defence after Laporte is out apparently for quite long?

How much lifeline still for Zinc? What about Otamendi?

Zinchenko will keep his place as long as he continues to play well. Why drop him if he plays well?

Otamendi will stay in and is a good shout. If in doubt though, Ederson is nailed.

Think so too but seen some doubts here (again) that Zinc could be dropped. After Laporte injury Otamendi could be interesting

Otamendi already nailed with Stones out. Mendy back soon.

I imagine Fernandinho will be brought in at CB.

Opponents will pump high balls into the box.

Best way for City to get clean sheets will continue to be keeping the opposition in their own half.
