Wednesday morning brought the widely anticipated news that Aymeric Laporte (£6.5m) faces a lengthy spell on the sidelines.

The Manchester City centre-half was stretchered off with a knee injury in the first half of Saturday’s win over Brighton and Hove Albion and has since undergone surgery, with the reigning league champions reporting that Laporte had damaged his “cartilage and lateral meniscus”.

No timeframe was put on his return by the club but widespread media reports suggest the French stopper will not return until 2020.

Who will replace Laporte at the back, then?

On paper, the Citizens only have two remaining orthodox centre-halves on the books: John Stones and Nicolas Otamendi (both £5.4m).

However, Fernandinho (£5.3m) featured in defence for a handful of games last season and has been training as a centre-half for the past few weeks.

With Stones sidelined with a thigh injury, the Brazilian was the man brought on alongside Otamendi on Saturday when Laporte was carried from the field of play.

Fernandinho said after full-time:

I’ve been training in this position the last couple of weeks. We still have two centre-backs but I can play in this position.

John was injured, Laporte comes off and I was the only one on the bench. It’s not a secret for me. The key is just to understand the concept of the way we have to play. The movements and the pace we use in games. It was my first time and I hope I can improve and do better next time.

Head coach Pep Guardiola said of the prospects of the Brazilian at centre-back:

He needs some processes, defensively especially. He is intelligent with a lot of experience and we will work with him. Unfortunately, we cannot right now because of the international break but we are going to work on it. We need him in this position.

Meanwhile, Guardiola said that he would have no hesitation in playing Kyle Walker (£6.0m) out of position.

Walker has featured in a back three for his club and country but never as a centre-half in a back four.

Guardiola said on Saturday:

It is what it is. It’s happened and the other guys will make a step forward. If one day I need to put Kyle Walker as a central defender, he is going to play there.

Laporte was the mainstay of the City defence last season, starting all but one Premier League match that he was fully fit for – a muscle injury affecting his capacity to play in Gameweeks 28 to 30.

In this article, we will look at the games in which Laporte didn’t feature at centre-half, including the handful of matches he started at left-back.

Walker didn’t feature at centre-half in a ‘two’ once for City last season, so we will not cover him in the below analysis.

We will pay particular attention to who deputised as the left-sided centre-half, as it is this position that Laporte has occupied since his arrival in Manchester.

The results of each fixture are also included, with City’s score always first.

Final Thoughts

Otamendi seems to be the clear understudy for Laporte, then.

In the 17 competitive matches that the Frenchman didn’t start in his usual position, Otamendi deputised as the left-sided centre-back in 13 of them.

Vincent Kompany stood in for Laporte on three occasions but of course has now left the club, while youngster Eric Garcia was the only other defender on the books who filled in as a left-sided centre-back (in the dead rubber of an EFL Cup semi-final, second leg against Burton Albion) in 2018/19.

Not since 2016/17 has Stones started a City league match as the left-sided centre-half, while on the two occasions that Fernandinho played in defence last season, he played as a right-sided centre-back.

Fitness-permitting, Stones and Otamendi will likely be the default pairing, with Fernandinho (and Walker, if necessary) chipping in with the occasional run-out.

Otamendi’s capacity to play on the left side of the central defence would seem to make him the more attractive, more secure option from a Fantasy perspective, although Guardiola would surely have to consider someone else in that position for the odd game or two given that City are also competing in the Champions League and Carabao Cup.

If Fernandinho was at 4.5m, he would have been a really good option to have for the bench right now.

Which would mean he's playing even further back so chances of assists or goals are even more diminished compared to the likes of Luiz or Hayden. Plus he still only gets 1 point for a CS, and this in a defence that has just lost its best defender. Nah, still a poor option even at 4.5.

I can see Walker playing a big role for City this season now.

    Otamendi isn't trusted by Pep.
    Stones has injury issues.
Fernandinho is old and not a natural CB.

Walker also has the advantage of not being on international duty (with TAA, AWB and Trippier ahead of him)

I think he is a very consistent £6.0m defender. Look at his season record:

        2016/17: 142 pts
        2017/18: 138 pts
        2018/19: 150 pts

He has played around 2750 mins in each season = 31 games a season.

Martial a sell? Don’t see it if he’s fit for next game week. United stats look good and he’s got a 100% return rate as an oop 7.5.

There’s also some case for holding Fraser now you’ve kept him this long. I’m very definitely targeting Wilson from 6 on - those fixtures are so tasty.

Mount and Haller could work I suppose for the Bournemouth two.

City's defence is their weakness. Other than Laporte and Walker nothing really jumping out at you.

Reckon City defence going to be a bit of a 'what to expect' situation and Pep will sell the Ethiad to fund the most expensive CB ever come January. Cannot believe Maguire has that accolade 🙂

City Attack is the core of their defence. That's not changing. CBs will be doing minimal work. 5.4 mil for a nailed City defender with good fixtures coming up, it's a strong buy from me.

Kane and mount or KDB and Haller for the next block of fixtures?

    Current team:
    Pope
    TAA Zinc Digne AWB
    Salah Sterling Mount Cantwell
    Kane Pukki

    Button Lund Dendonker Greenwood

    It would mean a -4.

Larger question is whether to pass on Kane Sterling captain rotation - assuming Kane and Spurs start to function now Moura is out and Son and Erik are integrated with Alli hovering too.

Yeah, more by default than by design though.

The other major question is whether the City defence will be as effective now with Laporte out.

Not fully decided yet on whether to do a straight swap to Otamendi or downgrade to a 4.5 (already have Lundstram and Soyuncu) and upgrade Greenwood to a playing 3rd striker or Dendoncker to a better mid and play 3-5-2.

Advice appreciated. On a WC at the moment

    Pope (4.0)
    TAA Digne OTA (lundstram Rico)
    Mane Sterling KDB Mount Tielemans
    Pukki Haller (greenwood)

Should I be downgrading someone to swap Mane for Salah? I like the idea of having 5 strong midfielders but doesn't seem a way to make an extra mil for him

I would want a stronger bench myself as you likely aren't going to use WC again for about another 30 GWs, but if you are comfortable with that I don't see anything outrageously wrong.

No I like the look of that team. Mane can easily outscore salah this year. Looks like mane is hungry for goals this year. Think he wants the Golden boot. You only got to look at his reaction when being subbed last week I. E. About salah not passing to him and Firmino when in great goal scoring positions.

    Heaton
    Digne - TAA - Montoya - Zinch
    Salah - Sterling - KDB - Perez*
    Haller - King*

    Pope - Dendonker - Greenwood - Kelly

Any suggestions on what to do with this lot....happy to take a hit to get it right

Still got some tough fixtures to negotiate 3 of the next 4 GWs, though.

I agree he's a great pick but for me he's much better from GW9.

Barnes has better fixtures up till then. I like the idea of making the change from Barnes to Vardy then.

1FT 1.1 ITB. Still have WC.

    Current:

    Ryan
    TAA VVD Zinchenko Kelly
    Salah Sterling Mount Martial
    Vardy Pukki

    Button Dendoncker Smith Greenwood

    Could WC to this

    Pope Button
    TAA Kelly Zinchenko VVD Lundstram
    Salah Sterling KDB Mount Cantwell
    Pukki Barnes Ayew

    Ok or save WC?

Wow. Some thorough analysis. Reasurred me in my Zouma > Otamendi move I made before the rice drop!

  26. jia you

No need to overthink this one, Otamendi is a LCB, Laporte is a LCB who came in and took his place. Otamendia nailed completely nailed, barring a couple of woeful performances, until Laporte returns!
Only trouble is I now have 1.1 itb which will tempt me to get rid of my beloved Pukki for Wilson or Haller!

    1. Valar(Keith)
      • 16 Years
      6 years, 10 months ago

Yup. The LCB point was key. Was hoping it wouldn't be spoonfed in full HD but oh well.. Not to decide if I want to downgrade mount or a forward to upgrade Rico to ota or just do a straight swap from Digne to ota in 2 weeks.

Out of curiosity, do you prefer to have a good bench for rotation purposes, or do you tend to focus mainly on starting 11? I have always put all my budget into the starting 11 and have gotten the cheapest bench possible consisting of players who are at least likely to play. This season, I have a bench of Greenwood, Dendoncker, and Kelly.

Just curious as to where you stand on having options, or the strongest starting 11 possible.

I have only been playing the last 3 seasons but I have gone for a similar approach as you. I usually do this up until using my wildcard where I attempt to get at least one bench player that might be more consistent to allow some rotation. Would be interested in others opinions.

Pop quiz. In the last half season (GW24 to GW4) which are the 4 highest scoring teams?

    City
    Liverpool
    Arsenal
    ???

Think there must be a glitch somewhere. Can’t believe the result I found.

Leicester was the answer I was expecting.

Burnley are up there but not the one. They average just over a goal a game - slightly head of the pack due to Southampton result. I assume they’ll fall back again

        PL only

Bizarrely Palace appear to be the 4th highest scorers over the last half season with 30 goals. Don’t think I’ve got that wrong.

    A. Jota - > Wood

    B. Jota & Montoya - > Barnes & Lundstram

    C. Jota & Salah - > Haller & Mané

    D. None of these.
