Sheffield United 0-1 Liverpool

Goals: Georginio Wijnaldum (£5.4m)

Assists: None

Bonus Points: Joel Matip (£5.5m) x 3, Virgil van Dijk (£6.5m) x 2, Wijnaldum x 1

Mohamed Salah (£12.5m) is still searching for his first away goal of the Premier League season as Liverpool were frustrated by a determined Sheffield United side on Saturday afternoon.

The Reds maintained their 100% winning start to the campaign, courtesy of a Georginio Wijnaldum (£5.4m) goal but they really owed their win to Blades goalkeeper Dean Henderson (£4.5m).

He had shaped to make a routine stop from Wijnaldum’s shot but somehow the ball squirmed underneath him and across the line – a cruel way for Sheffield United to lose a game they probably deserved something from.

Salah is still waiting for his first away goal of the Premier League season

Sadio Mané (£11.6m) frustrated his 21.4% ownership with two golden opportunities in the first half, both of which he missed.

The first saw the Senegalese international put clean through on goal with just Henderson to beat, but he fluffed his lines and sliced his shot over the crossbar.

The next chance saw some rare insightful penetration and drive from Liverpool’s frontline, as Roberto Firmino (£9.6m) selflessly laid off a perfectly weighted pass – but Mané’s shot cannoned back off the post.

After Henderson’s blunder, he made up for things by producing an excellent stop to deny Salah who was one-on-one with the goalkeeper and arguably should have scored.

Mané was particularly wasteful in the first half

As the debate over which Liverpool attacking to own continues to drag on for Fantasy managers, Saturday’s performance was a timely reminder that both Salah and Mané are liable to performances that are lacking a clinical cutting edge.

For those managers who had captained Salah, (nobody was issued with more armbands than Gameweek 7 than him), this was a disappointing return from the Egyptian who has now scored just one goal in his last four Premier League fixtures.

Furthermore, he remains goalless away from home, all but two of his seven attacking returns this season taking place at Anfield.

The Salah vs Mané debate is proving tricky for Fantasy managers

Mané has previously looked more reliable on the road, with 21 points scored across trips to Southampton and Burnley. However, he is without an attacking return away from home since that Gameweek 4 goal at Turf Moor.

Of course, we have to give credit to Sheffield United who certainly made life very hard work for Liverpool. The Reds were unable to fashion too many clearcut chances in the opening period as they struggled to get to grips with Chris Wilder’s 3-5-2 system.

Klopp’s side emerged for the second half with some more enthusiasm and, temporarily, with an altered tactical system. Fabinho (£5.5m) dropped back to form a defensive trio with Virgil van Dijk (£6.5m) and Joel Matip (£5.5m), while Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.2m) and Andy Robertson (£6.9m) moved into extremely attacking positions on alternative wings for a short spell, before reverting to their natural flanks.

Liverpool can thank Dean Henderson for his error which led to their only goal of the game

Yet despite Klopp’s evident intentions to attack the Blades through the wide areas, it was the unlikely hero in Wijnaldum who struck a shot that the Blades’ keeper Henderson ultimately should have saved.

For owners of Liverpool’s uncharacteristically inconsistent defence, this was an important result for managers who have retained the faith in their assets. Despite becoming recognised as clean-sheet powerhouses in the 2018/19 season, so far in the current Premier League campaign, Klopp’s side has been unable to replicate that same level of defensive consistency.

However, owners of the still-popular Alexander-Arnold and Robertson, this was an important game in keeping their defensive returns ticking over, although it was the centre-backs who emerged with the bonus points.

As mentioned, it was a largely frustrating afternoon for the Reds who were certainly not at their best but huge credit must go to Sheffield United for their fearless performance that did not deserve defeat.

The Blades could have been understandably overwhelmed by the visit of the reigning champions of Europe, yet Wilder’s side refused to bow to the pressure that Jurgen Klopp’s side attempted to conjure up.

Mostly focussed down Alexander-Arnold’s flank, the attacking duo of Callum Robinson (£5.3) and Oli McBurnie (£5.9) tested Liverpool’s backlin with the former’s well-hit shot drifting wide of Adrian’s (£4.6) far post.

Callum Robinson was substituted 11 seconds before he would earned two extra points for playing the hour and keeping a clean sheet

John Lundstram (£4.4m), the club’s highest points scorer in 2019/20, came close after a terrific mazy run from John Fleck (£4.8m), but Wilder’s side were unable to score despite the number of promising opportunities they created throughout the match.

For Wilder, despite the result, this was a performance that epitomised the project he is attempting to build at the club in their pursuit of Premier League survival.

His side battled with unerring confidence to frustrate Liverpool, and managers considering investing in the likes of Lundstram or budget defenders such as John Egan (£4.5m) and Chris Basham (£4.5m) would be pleased to see such a defensively rigid performance from the Blades.

Henderson came off in the second half after getting hurt earlier in the game – but Klopp confirmed there was no injury

Finally, there were some concerns that Jordan Henderson (£5.4m) suffered an injury in the game as he was replaced by Divock Origi (£5.3m) in the 64th minute.

Klopp confirmed after the match that the substitution was purely a tactical one to change the shape of the attack. With Firmino retaining the centre-forward role, he pulled Salah into a central number 10 position with Origi and Mané manning the flanks.

“No, it was an offensive change. We had the opportunity – either Hendo or Gini, both worked hard, for both it was not an easy game today. Obviously, we made the right decision, Gini stayed on the pitch and scored! We wanted to change our approach, so we could have then Bobby finally between the lines but still an option in behind with Mo. We needed to defend the wings properly because they are there constantly, that’s why we needed first Sadio and then Milly on that [right] wing. Div made a proper impact when he came on, it was really helpful that we could pass the ball there [for] the one-on-one situations and I think he crossed the ball before the goal as well. So, that was the reason.” – Jurgen Klopp

Sheffield United XI (3-5-2): Henderson; O’Connell, Egan, Basham, Stevens, Baldock, Lundstram; Norwood (Clarke 77’) Fleck, Robinson (Mousset 60’); McBurnie.

Liverpool XI (4-3-3): Adrian; Alexander-Arnold, Matip, Van Dijk, Robertson; Fabinho, Wijnaldum, Henderson (Origi 64’); Mane (Oxlade-Chamberlain 90+4’), Salah, Firmino (Milner 87’)

              Absolutely
If Pep don't rotate them they will start to fall in February like Spurs, Arsenal usually do with lack of squad depth.

After all Pep is the best in the world. Think having 3 and sticking with them is best. Otamendi at 5.5 looks great value so KDB + Kun/Raz it is

Got a disagree about Otamendi. Last week I responded to all the Ota posts with DONT DO IT and obviously got a mouthful about their home fixtures. I put my money where my mouth was and went Ricardo (Digne out). Ricardo poss a touch overpriced but not worried. City looked an absolute calamity defensively. Like every single team is going to be loading their box and battering their central defence. Forget the fixtures, they can't defend. And at 5.5ish I don't want to be relying on attacking returns

                  I'm not denying that.
But mostly they don't have to defend. So ..
Good deal imo mate. They will keep CS here n there.

I think so. Reminds me a little of Sterling 2 seasons ago. When he was around 8 million, scoring points most weeks but most of us waited until around Xmas to get him in due to rotation fears. Not saying that he’s a must, because City have so many options. But he’s an option, sure.

The premium premium options and their fixtures to 7th Dec for context are:

    A. Salah: lei, mun, TOT, avl, MCI, cry, BHA, EVE, bou

    B. Aguero: WOL, cry, AVL, SOU, liv, CHE, new, bur, MUN

    C. Sterling: (as above)

    D. Aubameyang: BOU, shu, CRY, WOL, lei, SOU, nor, BHA, whu

    E. Kane: bha, WAT, liv, eve, SHU, whu, BOU, mun, BUR

Aubameyang looking almost essential over this period and Salah not really justifying his price recently and tough fixtures. Not fussed about Kane and Son probably a better way in.

Anyone considering going without Salah and Mané on the basis that there are alternatives who can outscore them and money can be spent a lot better elsewhere for more points?

the thing with the squad is I rely completely on Coty, chelsea and Norwich attacking returns...

Cantwell could deliver but perhaps better to spread the risk and Ceballos is a liability...

A)VVD to Lundstram to fund Dendoncker to McGinn/Yarmolenko next week
B)Rico to Lundstram, keep VVD and play him.

I also have TAA, A would mean having to play 1 of Dendoncker/Greenwood only for next GW

Who do I bench this week (taking into account fixtures?

Need to bench one of these:

    TAA, Otamendi, Lundstram, AWB
    Sterling, KDB, Salah, Mount, Cantwell
    Pukki, Abraham

Other subs will be Soyuncu & Greenwood

Yes, but Newcastle turns it up a notch in such games, scoring Spurs and Liverpool so far. Not sure how they do it (luck?). Just saying it's not as straightforward as it seems on paper

I guess it has to be AWB which is a bit frustrating as he is therefore clearly a complete dead weight in my team

Still own Jota and thinking he needs to go. Who would you downgrade of following players to do Jota to Wilson/Pukki?

    A) Digne
    B) Robbo
    C) Salah
    D) Sterling

Totally depends on the rest of your team. Impossible to say.

The obvious answer APPEARS to be Digne, but downgrading him could totally F the price point balance of your team

      So

I don't know and nobody can say

Early days yet, which of these looks more appealing in moving to a 3-4-3:

    VVD + Greenwood >

    A. Haller +Soyuncu
    B. Wilson + Rico/Kelly

    1. Ze_Austin
      • 7 Years
      6 years, 9 months ago

Rico and Kelly aren't first choice

Haller isn't getting service and Soy shouldn't be coming in for GW8

      Coin toss, I guess

      1. Bob B

Should have mentioned that they will most likely be 5th defenders in place of Greenwood's place on the bench (behind Robertson, Otamendi, Tomori, Lundstram)

        1. Ze_Austin

Then you absolutely do not need Soy (maybe Tomori to Soy if/when you give up on Chelsea defence)

          B by some distance, then

    1FT, £3.3m itb:

    Pope
    Trent Zinchenko Lundstram
    Sterling Son Mount Cantwell
    Aguero Haller Pukki

    Button Soyuncu Kelly Dendoncker

    Possible transfers:
    1. Sterling -> KdB
    2. Sterling + Haller -> KdB + Aubameyang (-4)
    3. Zinchenko -> Otamendi
    4. Zinchenko + Sterling -> Otamendi + KdB (-4)
    5. Leave and save FT

When top players like Mark Sutherns, TorresMagic and Matthew Jones have got OR worse than 500k, you know it has been a tough start to the season.

Those three have not finished outside the Top 30k in the last 5 seasons.

I've had Pope since the start (without knowing too much about him) so I could rotate him with Heaton (only 2 $4.5m GKs that paired for H&A fixtures)
and I pretty much see him in every team now....

What's so great about him or Burnley defensively that's makes him so popular?
Because right now I'm seeing nothing between GKs from different clubs. If he goes to 4.7m I might trade him to Henderson or Gunn just to pocket 0.1m

Burnley traditionally defended by shutting teams out to the edge of the box and forcing/allowing them to rain pot-shots at the keeper from distance. So the keeper often racked up a lot of saves. There was also some stuff about the way heaton played that used to rack up the bps but I'm not sure if same applies to Pope. Haven't been watching, just bought, set and forgot
