Sheffield United 0-1 Liverpool

Goals: Georginio Wijnaldum (£5.4m)

Assists: None

Bonus Points: Joel Matip (£5.5m) x 3, Virgil van Dijk (£6.5m) x 2, Wijnaldum x 1

Mohamed Salah (£12.5m) is still searching for his first away goal of the Premier League season as Liverpool were frustrated by a determined Sheffield United side on Saturday afternoon.

The Reds maintained their 100% winning start to the campaign, courtesy of a Georginio Wijnaldum (£5.4m) goal but they really owed their win to Blades goalkeeper Dean Henderson (£4.5m).

He had shaped to make a routine stop from Wijnaldum’s shot but somehow the ball squirmed underneath him and across the line – a cruel way for Sheffield United to lose a game they probably deserved something from.

Salah is still waiting for his first away goal of the Premier League season

Sadio Mané (£11.6m) frustrated his 21.4% ownership with two golden opportunities in the first half, both of which he missed.

The first saw the Senegalese international put clean through on goal with just Henderson to beat, but he fluffed his lines and sliced his shot over the crossbar.

The next chance saw some rare insightful penetration and drive from Liverpool’s frontline, as Roberto Firmino (£9.6m) selflessly laid off a perfectly weighted pass – but Mané’s shot cannoned back off the post.

After Henderson’s blunder, he made up for things by producing an excellent stop to deny Salah who was one-on-one with the goalkeeper and arguably should have scored.

Mané was particularly wasteful in the first half

As the debate over which Liverpool attacking to own continues to drag on for Fantasy managers, Saturday’s performance was a timely reminder that both Salah and Mané are liable to performances that are lacking a clinical cutting edge.

For those managers who had captained Salah, (nobody was issued with more armbands than Gameweek 7 than him), this was a disappointing return from the Egyptian who has now scored just one goal in his last four Premier League fixtures.

Furthermore, he remains goalless away from home, all but two of his seven attacking returns this season taking place at Anfield.

The Salah vs Mané debate is proving tricky for Fantasy managers

Mané has previously looked more reliable on the road, with 21 points scored across trips to Southampton and Burnley. However, he is without an attacking return away from home since that Gameweek 4 goal at Turf Moor.

Of course, we have to give credit to Sheffield United who certainly made life very hard work for Liverpool. The Reds were unable to fashion too many clearcut chances in the opening period as they struggled to get to grips with Chris Wilder’s 3-5-2 system.

Klopp’s side emerged for the second half with some more enthusiasm and, temporarily, with an altered tactical system. Fabinho (£5.5m) dropped back to form a defensive trio with Virgil van Dijk (£6.5m) and Joel Matip (£5.5m), while Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.2m) and Andy Robertson (£6.9m) moved into extremely attacking positions on alternative wings for a short spell, before reverting to their natural flanks.

Liverpool can thank Dean Henderson for his error which led to their only goal of the game

Yet despite Klopp’s evident intentions to attack the Blades through the wide areas, it was the unlikely hero in Wijnaldum who struck a shot that the Blades’ keeper Henderson ultimately should have saved.

For owners of Liverpool’s uncharacteristically inconsistent defence, this was an important result for managers who have retained the faith in their assets. Despite becoming recognised as clean-sheet powerhouses in the 2018/19 season, so far in the current Premier League campaign, Klopp’s side has been unable to replicate that same level of defensive consistency.

However, owners of the still-popular Alexander-Arnold and Robertson, this was an important game in keeping their defensive returns ticking over, although it was the centre-backs who emerged with the bonus points.

As mentioned, it was a largely frustrating afternoon for the Reds who were certainly not at their best but huge credit must go to Sheffield United for their fearless performance that did not deserve defeat.

The Blades could have been understandably overwhelmed by the visit of the reigning champions of Europe, yet Wilder’s side refused to bow to the pressure that Jurgen Klopp’s side attempted to conjure up.

Mostly focussed down Alexander-Arnold’s flank, the attacking duo of Callum Robinson (£5.3) and Oli McBurnie (£5.9) tested Liverpool’s backlin with the former’s well-hit shot drifting wide of Adrian’s (£4.6) far post.

Callum Robinson was substituted 11 seconds before he would earned two extra points for playing the hour and keeping a clean sheet

John Lundstram (£4.4m), the club’s highest points scorer in 2019/20, came close after a terrific mazy run from John Fleck (£4.8m), but Wilder’s side were unable to score despite the number of promising opportunities they created throughout the match.

For Wilder, despite the result, this was a performance that epitomised the project he is attempting to build at the club in their pursuit of Premier League survival.

His side battled with unerring confidence to frustrate Liverpool, and managers considering investing in the likes of Lundstram or budget defenders such as John Egan (£4.5m) and Chris Basham (£4.5m) would be pleased to see such a defensively rigid performance from the Blades.

Henderson came off in the second half after getting hurt earlier in the game – but Klopp confirmed there was no injury

Finally, there were some concerns that Jordan Henderson (£5.4m) suffered an injury in the game as he was replaced by Divock Origi (£5.3m) in the 64th minute.

Klopp confirmed after the match that the substitution was purely a tactical one to change the shape of the attack. With Firmino retaining the centre-forward role, he pulled Salah into a central number 10 position with Origi and Mané manning the flanks.

“No, it was an offensive change. We had the opportunity – either Hendo or Gini, both worked hard, for both it was not an easy game today. Obviously, we made the right decision, Gini stayed on the pitch and scored! We wanted to change our approach, so we could have then Bobby finally between the lines but still an option in behind with Mo. We needed to defend the wings properly because they are there constantly, that’s why we needed first Sadio and then Milly on that [right] wing. Div made a proper impact when he came on, it was really helpful that we could pass the ball there [for] the one-on-one situations and I think he crossed the ball before the goal as well. So, that was the reason.” – Jurgen Klopp

Sheffield United XI (3-5-2): Henderson; O’Connell, Egan, Basham, Stevens, Baldock, Lundstram; Norwood (Clarke 77’) Fleck, Robinson (Mousset 60’); McBurnie.

Liverpool XI (4-3-3): Adrian; Alexander-Arnold, Matip, Van Dijk, Robertson; Fabinho, Wijnaldum, Henderson (Origi 64’); Mane (Oxlade-Chamberlain 90+4’), Salah, Firmino (Milner 87’)

Captaincy is becoming a real headache. Next week City have a better fixture in Wolves H vs Pool with Leicester H, as Foxes defence seems to be pretty robust. I'm very concerned about the probable eventual 20 min cameo for captain Sterling/KDB. Am l mad to just perma-captain Salah for safety in close spots now?

What gives you the idea Sterling/ KDB are inevitable 20 min cameos?

I think after Pool's fixtures improve from GW13 I might shift to Salah as perma cap.

Leicester's defence has looked shaky when I've seen them. And they'll try and play, which should suit Salah.

    C) Save FT
    D) Something else

    Ryan
    TAA, Digne, Zinchenko

Best striker out of these from GW9 onwards?

    A) Aguero
(Downgrade Sterling to Maddison and VVD/AWB to Soyuncu for a hit)

    B) Vardy
    (Downgrade VVD to Soyuncu)

    C) Wilson
    (Downgrade VVD/AWB to Soyuncu)

Have TAA & Ota also so downgrading one those defenders and upgrading Barnes is my biggest priority.

Shifting from Sterling to Aguero does look risky though. Could backfire easily.

One reason why I like Sterling is because it will be easy to shift to Salah/Mane around GW13 when their fixtures improve.

          Well it is.
          But, we're forgetting that it's Kun !
We were all on Kun last season. This season the perception has changed because of the template mentality (I'm part of that too bro)
Just imagine, home game Kun == © !
That's what I'm missing this season i guess.

That would be reasonable. If Soyuncu could sneak a cheeky hattrick today too I’d be okay with that.

Last season at this point I was top 1k. Here I am 12 months later needing a Greenwood hattrick to keep me in the top 1m. 🙂

I want triple city attack for my wild card
Ideal scenario: Sterling, KDB + Aguero (still possible)

But what if I take Mahrez instead of sterling? He’s only got Bernardo for competition, he’s really on form, the started 4 (5-0, 4-0, 8-0 and 3-1) with 2 out of the 3 he didn’t start not being won. Even while only starting 60% his value is 2nd highest (to KDB) among premium options.

Convince me it’s a bad idea

If Allison really is close to being back then Liverpool defence is going to explode points wise (in my opinion)

Have you considered benching Jora this week and playing Lund? Wolves fixtures look taster after City.

I’d move Digne on to Ota or Soy depending on funds. Then you’d have 2 FT for the IB.

      Something to consider at least.

Purely if picking from options given the A (orB)

      Think you just burn one.

Could go for a 1 week punt if you don’t like any of your starting teams fixtures or think there is a stand out 1 week option you don’t have (I can’t see it though)

If Fabianski is out for a while you might consider moving Diop.

Having a horrid season. Have 2FT’s and have the exact money for salah & pukki > kdb & firmino - do it?

    Rest of team:

    Adrian / button
    Digne / tomori / lowton / lundstram / Rico
    Salah / sterling / son / Pepe / mount
    Pukki / Abraham / greenwood

It's a risk either way, but I probably wouldn't. It's tough actually. Getting KDB isn't going to help you climb considering everyone else has him, and Firminho isn't as attractive as Salah as an option either.

But if you think that Pepe can drag you up by himself as a differential, then it could work.

Yeah I know what you mean. KDB is killing me though in mini leagues so feel I need to get him in.

Reluctant to lose sterling so feels like salah is the way, but perhaps Pepe if does nothing tomorrow

Any Arsenal fan here? Do you think AMN has lost his place or is it to soon for Bellerin to be starting in the league?

I have 2 FT, need to get rid of Aurier and AMN (if he has lost his place).

Btw nice to get 2 red cards in a row after i WC 🙂

    cheers

I think Chambers will play tomorrow, he is awesome in last 2 games.
Bellerin had played 90 min in U23 team yesterday, don't think he will play tomorrow, next GW maybe he will regularly play again.

Struggling to know what to do with my 2FTs. Definitely want 2 going into the International break, but don't really want to burn a transfer. Any suggestions? Vardy from GW9 is in my thoughts. Mount is another I have massive FOMO over (although prefer having Son). Cantwell as a 4th mid possibly has an expiry date so could look to upgrade Hayden and drop him Cantwell to the bench. For me next week will decide whether to go Aguero or Sterling longer term.

    Pope
    TAA Otamendi Tomori (Rico, Lund)
    Mane KDB Son Cantwell (Hayden)

Yes. Chelsea best def atm. To confirm Lampard said “There is competition in there, Tomori is now number one or two as it stands. They are really playing well. Age isn’t a huge story.”

No one knows, people will pretend to, but they don't.

For now he seems a safe pick, lampard has said he is 1 or 2 in the CB standings.

      And he's 4.6m.

Just realised how close I was to a sneaky McGovern clean sheet. 92nd minute goal. Would have been the flukiest clean sheet ever after coming on 2 minutes after the first goal!

    Good afternoon all!

Would it be mad to consider the following:

    Pukki/Abraham > Auba
    Mané > Mount

I have two FT. My team now:

    Pope / Button
    TAA / Lundstram / Lowton / Ota / Soy
    KDB / Son / Mané / Cantwell / Hayden
    Aguero / Pukki / Abraham

    Cheers for your input! 🙂

Whats your thoughts on West Ham defence, should we stay away from them?

I am a little bit tempted to get Cresswell if he is nailed, not because of CS but also attacking returns. Need to get rid of Aurier, so who is the best replacement?

    A) Cresswell (other WH defender)
    B) Tomori
    C) Soy
    D) Other
