Budget defenders the real winners of Watford’s draw with Bournemouth

Watford 0-0 Bournemouth

Goals: None

Assists: None

Bonus Points: Ben Foster x3 (£4.8m), Nathan Aké x2 (£4.9m), Craig Cathcart x1 (£4.4m), Aaron Ramsdale x1 (£4.5m)

Watford and Bournemouth played out a lively 0-0 draw at Vicarage Road that saw the home side extend their winless run to ten games.

Fantasy Premier League managers may also be increasingly concerned about the Cherries’ recent goal drought.

However, there does appear to have been a significant improvement for both Watford and Bournemouth in defence, offering up some potentially viable budget options.

Wilson has now blanked in three consecutive matches

Eddie Howe’s side have now failed to score in three consecutive league games as the early-season form of Callum Wilson (£8.0m) continues to feel a long time ago.

The England international delivered attacking returns in each of the first seven Gameweeks of 2019/20 but has now blanked in the last three – two of those favourable meetings with Norwich and Watford.

Wilson’s striking partner Josh King (£6.3m), who was benched for Gameweek 9, was restored to the starting line-up but looked a shadow of his former self too.

The former Blackburn Rovers man, who has scored two goals and registered three assists so far this season, now has just two attacking returns since Gameweek 6.

Fraser was relatively lively but could not carve a breakthrough for his side

Ryan Fraser (£7.1m) and Arnaut Danjuma (£5.8m), making his first league start of the campaign, did their best to add some width to the 4-4-2 formation but could not serve up the goods.

Howe stated his concern post-match at his side’s lack of goals in recent weeks.

“Keeping a clean sheet away from home is positive, but having our third game without scoring is certainly a negative. We don’t normally struggle to score but today at least we did not struggle to create chances.” – Eddie Howe

Bournemouth now have a testing run of fixtures over the next seven Gameweeks, in which they face four of last season’s top-six.

Whether Wilson and King can be considered worthy of investment after having blanked against relegation candidates Norwich and Watford remains to be seen.

Next week’s clash against Manchester United could be a make-or-break occasion for those managers in ownership of either of the Cherries’ attacking duo.

Rico went close to getting more attacking returns for Bournemouth but did pick up a yellow card for his troubles

Perhaps Fantasy managers should start turning their attention to the other end of Bournemouth’s squad as they kept a second successive clean sheet in Gameweek 10.

This highlights, in particular, the value of Diego Rico (£4.2m), who impressed against Watford and could have added to his attacking returns, as he continues to share corner-taking duties with Fraser.

The left-back unleashed a powerful shot from distance in the first half, forcing a save out of Ben Foster (£4.8m).

Gerard Deulofeu was paired with Roberto Pereyra in a two-man strike-force

It must be said though that Bournemouth were helped in this latest clean sheet by a continued lack of cutting edge from Watford.

The Hornets should have arguably gone in front after Abdoulaye Doucoure (£5.7m) missed a golden opportunity to assert an early level of control over the visitors.

Quique Sanches Flores’ side continued to look lively throughout the afternoon’s fixture, with Gerard Deulofeu (£6.1m) striking the post directly from a corner too.

This was the sixth time this season that Watford have failed to score in the league this season, with their five goals scored the joint-lowest of any team in the division, level with Newcastle.

Janmaat’s price and attacking station are worth monitoring

Despite the Hornets’ lack of goals, Flores can take solace in the fact his side are seemingly displaying an increased sense of defensive resilience following their humbling at the hands of Manchester City last month.

Since that 8-0 demolition, Watford have conceded just three goals in four games, suggesting that some of their defensive options, many of whom have depreciated in price, could be worth considering.

Another promising performance from Daryl Janmaat (£4.3m) in the right wing-back position of Flores’ 3-5-2 system should keep him on our Watchlists for now.

Adam Masina (£4.3m) was deployed on the left but may lose his place to Jose Holebas (£4.7m) when he returns from suspension.

The manager confirmed he was pleased with his side’s defensive performance:

“We had our chances, we did not concede goals and we had a good team spirit and this is really good for the future. Defending well is a good base, but I can feel when we are on the opposition’s box the players are still a little bit nervous and they can sometimes take bad decisions. I think the first win is getting closer, the difference with the other teams is not so big and I’m really confident for the future.” – Quique Sanchez Flores

Watford’s injury woes continued right from the off against Bournemouth. Tom Cleverley (£4.9m) was forced to leave the pitch after just 10 minutes with a suspected ankle problem, Will Hughes (£5.5m) replacing him.

Fantasy interest in Cleverley is unlikely to be high but Hughes might be worthy of monitoring given his potential for attacking returns in the past.

Watford XI (3-5-2): Foster; Kabasele, Dawson, Cathcart; Masina (Foulquier 73′) Chalobah (Gray 57′) Cleverley (Hughes 10′), Doucouré, Janmaat; Pereyra, Deulofeu.

Bournemouth XI (4-4-2): Ramsdale; Rico, Aké, S Cook, Smith; Danjuma (H.Wilson 64′) Billing, Lerma, Fraser; J King, C Wilson (Solanke 74′).

Just feel he would be best 3rd striker option if he does find form and if he is nailed again. His price is beautiful.

For what it's worth I reckon I have sussed Pep Roulette! Ignoring analysis but going mainly by gut feeling Pep really really wants to win the Champions League this season and may have already (privately) conceded Premier League to Liverpool. Based on that broad assumption I believe he will do the following:

1 Sterling - give him rests in matches that don't matter or are already "won" so will take him off early if chances arise in any game - CL or PL.
2 Aguero - will focus his appearances biased toward CL
3 Jesus - will focus his appearances biased toward PL
4 David Silva - will focus his appearances biased toward PL but take him off early if opportunities arise
5 Foden - will focus his appearances biased toward CL
    6 Mahrez - ditto Foden
7 Bernardo - will focus his appearances biased toward PL
8 KdB - really difficult - as progression in CL he will be needed more and more so will be given rests in PL - probably counterpoint to David Silva above

I think it's more important than we thought and Pep has been trying to hide it. It didn't prevent Aguero from playing but it required caution and that's why his minutes have been handled so carefully imo.

    Tielemans 48 points / 891 minutes
    Maddison 44 points / 782 minutes
    Perez 42 points / 569 minutes
    Barnes 37 points / 479 minutes

Leicester are a gold mine of late... a gold mine with decent-ish fixtures as far as the eye can see

Sure, but any stats are irreparably skewed by that 9-0. Without those? They’re...not bad. Decent. Workable. Value. But nothing extraordinary.

      1. Maximus Bonimus Pointimus

        Pre-Southampton:

        Tielemans 37 points / 801 minutes
        Maddison 36 points / 692 minutes
        Perez 22 points / 496 minutes
        Barnes 28 points / 408 minutes

That’s obvs a decline - but equally it’s from a fixture list that covered 4 of last season’s top 6 in the first 9 games...

The more i think about Perez now fully adapted and nailed at 6.0, the more I’m trying to think of a reason not to dabble with him as the third of a treble up - feck all to lose at that price

          Adrian
          Pieters Tomori Lunds
          Salah Mane KDB Sterling CHO
          Pukki Abraham

          Button Rico Kelly Wickam.

Considering the decent performance from that cheap backline its better to ignore Vardy and keep the Premiums mids?

Chelsea really were never going to keep lots of cleanssheets even with easy fixtures. There's not many defenders at his price faring better. And I wouldn't expect more than 2 goals per season from him.

If you want Vardy downgrade Mane or Salah to a punt of your choice and sell Pukki. Norwich are hopeless

            Does CHO to Hayden
            Abraham to Vardy work?

I think a triple up on liverpool after city isn't a bad idea.
Personally mane and taa with robbo.

They have faced so many tough teams and their players still delivered.

          Arsenal Chelsea Leicester man utd.

Burnley away, Sheffield utd away and now spurs and city.

Then its palace (where they always find the way to beat them) and Brighton Everton Watford Bournemouth.

Rotation can be an issue but not a big one like pep and not in full backs due to the fact that gomez isn't at his best form.
          Robbo doesn't need rotation

Im on Salah Trent Robbo already. Not the best setup for the City game but glad to be ahead of the curve. Season keepers. Mane instead of Salah seems good too.

Only problem is the club's world cup and the Blank fixture (18gw).

RIco and Lund both have good fixtures that game week so its not an issue to bench TAA and Robbo. Salah to another premium midfielder for one week.

That could work, there is nothing you can lose in value on Salah but Mane can be an issue for 1 week swap

Not being ahead of the curve if buy too early and lose points unless players you want could price you out

Mane, Salah, Robbo and TAA are safe from rotation.

Everyone here said Arsenal, Chelsea and Man Utd were easy fixtures. Thought Man Utd would easily get trashed 4-0? Spurs were also an easy fixtures according to most here.

If Pep had to he would now probably play Walker at CB instead of Ota and Pep mentioned Walker as a CB earlier this season.

Also believe Cancelo has taken Walker's spot and is his to lose.

Fern isn't suspended for the next league game so Ota unlikely to start. Stones wasn't great yesterday either but still likely to keep his place for now I reckon.

Frank is not the most adept when it comes to his team having to defend, that is clear. CHE will continue to ship goals.

                No.

Doherty, Saiss and Coady are the back three. Jonny and Traore the wing backs.
