West Bromwich Albion 0-4 Arsenal

  • Goals: Alexandre Lacazette (£8.2m) x2, Kieran Tierney (£5.5m), Bukayo Saka (£5.3m)
  • Assists: Emile Smith Rowe (£4.4m) x2, Rob Holding (£4.5m), Tierney
  • Bonus: Tierney x3, Lacazette x2, Holding x1

Arsenal brushed aside a hapless West Brom side that has now scored just once while conceding 13 times in the four league matches since Sam Allardyce took charge.

That keeps Baggies assets the wrong side of pointless, in so many senses, while Arsenal stars offer intriguing Fantasy possibilities in both the short and medium-term.

Lacca Boom

Gameweek 18’s seven fixtures are tempting managers to consider using their Free Hit chip, with the Gunners’ home match against Crystal Palace catching the eye.

The north London side have won three games on the bounce now, although their south London rivals are likely to show considerably more resistance than West Brom, having taken four points from the last six available, conceding just once along the way.

Alexandre Lacazette (£8.2m), who scored twice in four second-half minutes on Saturday, should be a strong bet to be a Free Hit striker for many.

He’s owned by just 4.6% of FPL managers and isn’t feeling huge regular transfer love despite four goals from his last three appearances, one of which was a 24-minute match-winning cameo at Brighton.

Midfield Magic

Instead, the Gameweek 18 money is going on Bukayo Saka (£5.3m), who was outstanding at West Brom, scoring his second goal in three matches.

The midfielder is currently the most-popular transfer in, with 100,000+ new managers.

But like most Arsenal assets, he’s still something of a differential, even if his 7.7% ownership figure is bettered by only Bernd Leno (£4.9m and 8.3%) among his team-mates.

Saka is providing a lot of bang for relatively little buck, with 27 points over the last three Gameweeks.

And so is Emile Smith Rowe (£4.4m), who set up two goals against the Baggies and is shaping up to be a team talisman.

He’s started the last three matches, producing three assists and helping the Gunners to three wins at exactly 6.0 points per match – no midfielder at that bargain bucket price can offer such a return.

For those on the tightest of budgets, Smith Rowe is a tempting prospect if he continues to hold down a starting spot.

Tierney Time

An understandably delighted Mikel Arteta reserved his biggest praise for defender Kieran Tierney (£5.3m), in part simply for being Scottish on a snowy night:

He’s got something special in his blood because we’re all wearing snoods, gloves and hats. He just goes out in his shorts and t-shirt! He is a joy to work with and I’m so happy for him with the goal he scored and everything he’s put in to be better every day towards the team and towards the club.

Tierney ended up with a match-leading four chances created and, with a second straight clean sheet under his belt as well, he produced a bumper 18-point haul for his 5.7% ownership.

The 6.3% on Hector Bellerin (£5.1m) were rather less well served as their man’s first-half booking persuaded Arteta to take him off after 53 minutes.

So while Tierney produced his first double-digit total of the season, the Spaniard brought in zero points.

Centre-half Rob Holding (£4.5m) also made it into double figures, thanks to an assist and one bonus point.

He’s put on over 100,000 new owners over Christmas and his price has moved up a notch as a result, but he’s still relatively cheap for a player who’s currently looking like a reliable starter in an improving backline.

Gunner Be Interesting

Free Hit or not, Arsenal players need monitoring.

After the visit of Palace, their fixtures are a mix of the good (Newcastle at home), the tough (Manchester United, also at home) and the harder to call (Southampton, Wolves and Aston Villa away, Leeds at The Emirates).

But the form of Lacazette, and the cut-price delights of Saka and co, should prompt investment, especially for those in need of a differential or two.

The Gunners could be further boosted by the return to fitness of Thomas Partey (£4.9m), with Arteta providing an injury update post-match:

Well, he hasn’t trained fully with us, but he has done most parts of training in the last few days. He’s feeling good and we will assess him if he needs another two or three sessions to see if he’s 100 per cent available to play [v Newcastle in the FA Cup].

Finding space in the midfield for a player of such quality will need to be achieved without upsetting a side that has clearly found some balance in his extended absence, of course.

As for West Brom, Allardyce continues to play the just-arrived card:

Another game gone by where we learn more about the players we have. We have learned an awful lot about what we can and cannot do.

‘Awful’ is the word and Fantasy managers learned that long ago – the only starter with anything approaching a vaguely significant ownership is keeper Sam Johnstone (£4.5m and 2.4%), who made eight stops against the Gunners to continue leading the way for saves in FPL, with 74.

West Bromwich Albion XI (4-1-4-1): Johnstone; Furlong, Ajayi, Ivanovic (Bartley 66), O’Shea; Sawyers; Diangana (Austin 45), Gallagher, M Phillips (Harper 81), M Pereira; C Robinson.

Arsenal XI (4-3-3): Leno; Tierney, Mari, Holding, Bellerín (Maitland-Niles 54); Xhaka, Ceballos, Smith Rowe (Willock 77); Saka (Willian 71), Aubameyang, Lacazette.

I'm thinking if it's a FH I might do it. He's a really good price. And Pep rewards those who played well. Mahrez started after he scored the hat-trick and only got dropped once he played a poor game vs United.

Can I get away with not using FH here?

Panning on doing Adams > Wilson for free which leaves me with:

    Martinez,

Will have no playing subs obviously...

Your team can definitely get away with not using FH. But getting rid of Adams is a bit weird. Good chance he'll be back for DGW19 and I'm presuming that's why you bought him in the first place?

Agree, however, can switch Wilson > Rodrigo and attack those Leeds double fixtures for a FT and have 10x DGW players + Kane for 19 and not have to take a hit either this week or next

Also dont see the point of literally not using a FT if it means the diff between fielding a player or not at all, especially for a player such as Wilson who seems to be in 99% of FH drafts, but I could be wrong

Would you free hit this? Players in caps have a game.

    Mendy
STONES, DIER, TARGETT, TAYLOR (if fit)
    KDB, SON, FERNANDES, RIEDEWALD
    DCL, Adams,

    Bench: Forster, Salah, Cresswell, Bamford

I'm thinking saving the free hit, but what move would upgrade this week?

Count 'good' starters. If you have 8, don't FH. If you don't, FH.

Stones, Dier, KdB, Son, Fernandes, DCL.

That's 6. Maybe Targett at a push. This is a FH imo.

      A. Tierney is more better than Holding than Saka is than Smith Rowe imo.

Plus, Smith Rowe is at the baseline for midfielders, so in that sense, offers better value than Holding, who could be replaced by oth players around the same price who can also get CSs, and are more nailed (which make B a slightly higher risk I think).

(Saka & Gabriel owner. Might by Tierney this week)

Not using FH or any chips for the two coming weeks. Team for GW18 is currently:

    Martinez (Steer)
    Holding Dier Cancelo Mitchell (Coufal)
    Son Bruno Grealish (Salah Anguissa)
    Kane DCL (Bamford)

0.1 ITB and 1FT. Was planning Anguissa to KDB, funded by Kane to Antonio and DCL to Brewster (352) for a -4 hit in GW19.

Worth doing Salah to KDB this week then Anguissa to Salah and the other two moves next week for a -8 hit? Would give me a chance to see if Grealish gets a YC this week - if he does then I can put Salah in for him and only take a -4 to fund it.

Guys - Help needed here as although I got 90-odd points in GW17 without using any BB/TC/FH I have a 1st XI that should play in GW18 (I used my FT to get in Cancelo for Coufal last night) but my question is one of strategy going forward..

    Martínez TOT (H)

Cancelo BHA (H) Holding CRY (H) Dier AVL (A) Mitchell ARS (A)

Saka CRY (H) De Bruyne BHA (H) Grealish TOT (H) Son AVL (A)

Watkins TOT (H) Kane AVL (A)

    Bench: Johnstone (-) Dallas (-) Salah (-) Bamford (-)

    Squad Val: £104.1 Bank: £0.3

Can I use my Bench Boost in addition to my planned Wildcard in GW19? If so would you suggest using my my Wildcard to fill up with players from teams playing twice in GW19 (eg; LEI, LEE, MCI, WHU, MUN, LIV, AVL, SOU, WBA) and play my Bench Boost in the same week also?? I'm thinking of Johnstone>Foster; Dier>Stones, Holding>Struijk, Saka>Soucek (or Saka>Fernandes, Kane>Antonio) & potentially Son>Rashford.

If I cannot play both a WC & BB on the same week would you suggest holding off playing the wildcard as I'm guessing GW 19 will be the best week in the season to play a Bench Boost.. Correct? If that is the case I guess I'd just do the BB & transfer Dier>Stones using my FT and taking a hit to do Saka>Soucek.

    RMT & thoughts please..

        Thanks Tony,

I just found the answer also on the FPL site:

Can I use more than one chip in the same Gameweek?
No, only one chip may be active in a Gameweek. For example, it is not possible to make transfers with your Wildcard chip and then use your Bench Boost chip in the same Gameweek."

Do you think GW19 will be the best in the season to apply Bench Boost or should I take the opportunity to Wildcard, potentially saving a couple of point hits & apply a Bench Boost later in the season?

I wont have any City at all for 19. Given their form they just weren’t in my plans, but if they are now picking up form, not having any seems a bit risky. My team for 19 will be:
    Fabianski
    Dallas - TAA - Chilwell
    Son - Salah - Bruno - Soucek
    Bamford - Kane - DCL

    Nyland, KWP, Struijk, Bissouma

i felt like they'd concede as soon as they brought aguero and mahrez on.

Had that same feeling, was just a sickener when it happened.

Think its still a good idea though to double up on their defence. Their fixtures looks tasty.

Current Free Hit, which I know is very dull.

    Leno
    Stones Holding Fernandez
    KDB Sterling Fernandes Rashford Saka
    Kane Wilson

    Steer Yedlin Mitchell Davis

Happy overall, tempted to do Sterling to Foden, but not sure where I re-invest the money (Holding to Tierney and Fernandes to Maguire maybe, but still a lot left over).

    Free hit team - thoughts?

    Darlow - 4.0
    Stones Cancelo Wan-Bissaka (Kilman, 3.9)
Son KDB Bruno Saka Neto Podence
    Laca Kane (Brewster)

Have 0.4 ITB to play around with, thoughts?

Get Mitchell as 3.9, don’t like the Wolves double up but not many options given the prices. El Ghazi, Gundogan, Zaha probably alternative options. You could also save 0.1 by getting Leno instead
Not saying those changes are better, just options.
Also you could get Wilson instead

not sure about the double wolves in midfield. I'd be tempted to downgrade Kane and get Rashford if possible.

Thinking about GW19. Worth bench boosting with a bench of Kane, Son, Smith Rowe and non playing keeper? These would be the only players in my team with no double gameweek.

    1. CheesyZoot
      • 6 Years
      5 years, 29 days ago

Will probably be hard pressed to find a better single game week playing bench.

The question is whether it could be better used for a later DGW post second WC in which you stack your team with 15 DGW players

      1. aapoman
        • 12 Years
        5 years, 29 days ago

Yup. Was hard planning on free hit gw19 but Villa and City double completely has scrapped that plan. Suddenly I got 6 more DGW players 😀

Yeah in all honesty I would probably save your BB in 19, patience is key this season I feel.

I would be tempted to play Kane ahead of one of your DGW players as well. Can easily outscore some of them in a single game VS. Sheff and could be a red arrow if you opt him out of the team and he mega hauls

if you can afford a keeper upgrade the -4 is almost guaranteed to be made up in a double gameweek with a good chance for a cleano, so i would do a gk hit

What do you say about this "attack heavy - defence weak as an infant" free hit team?

    Darlow
    Stones, Holding, Yedlin
    KDB, Son, Bruno, Sterling
    Laca, Martial, Wilson

    4.0, Mitchell, Smith-Rowe, 3.8
    0.2 itb

    Cheers!

I see Villa being a lot tougher on defence than Leeds so reluctant to double up on spurs, Son probably enough for me. But will tinker it a bit further of course, cup games will change a lot

Think your missing out on some good defensive options like Tierney and Saiss who have good attacking form of late and very cheap considering.
Martial arts minutes will be at risk, Cavani’s suspension will be over so he will be eligible for 18, try get Rashford instead?

Yeah, Rashford and Tierney also on my mind, Saiss not so much, Everton could get a goal there with all three of Richarlison, DCL and James back again

Those FH-ing for BGW18 - are you going both Kane & Son vs AVL or just one of them (which..?)

Very tempted to "have fun" a bit with C.Wilson vs SHU and also vs CRY (Palace defensively stat-wise are really cack) so it might mean no Son or Kane in my FH Team

Currently have 8 players for GW18 including Brewster, do you feel this is enough without using FH?

My original plan was to use FH but now I am undecided. Current team:

    McCarthy/Johnstone
    Dias/Stones/Mitchell
    KDB Son Bruno
    DCL Brewster

Plan currently is to BB in the DGW19. Thanks.

After free transfers I can have this team in the Blank:

Lowton, Cancelo, Stones, KDB, Fernandes, Son, Saka, Kane

Tempted to save Free Hit, mostly because it means Triple City in Blank AND BB19 where I'll do a -4 to get Salah and Rodrigo in for Son and Kane. Only "downside" is Saka on my bench boost (vs Newcastle not so bad I'd say).

What do you guys think? Probably lose a bit of ground in the blank in free hit but then tasty Triple City in the double should make up that loss!
