We assess the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) fallout of Jack Grealish‘s (£8.0m) move from Aston Villa to Manchester City in our latest Premium Members article.

Grealish was City’s first major signing of the summer transfer window on Thursday, joining the reigning champions on a six-year deal for a British record transfer fee of £100m.

The player said upon his move:

“I am incredibly happy to have joined Manchester City. City are the best team in the country with a manager considered to be the best in the world – it’s a dream come true to be part of this club.

Over the past 10 seasons, they have won major trophies consistently. Pep coming here has taken them to the next level and the football this team plays is the most exciting in Europe. To play for Pep and learn from him is going to be special and it’s something any top footballer would want.

The facilities are amazing, and I honestly can’t wait to get started, meet everyone and get playing.”

City’s director of football, Txiki Begiristain, added:

We are absolutely delighted to be able to welcome Jack Grealish to Manchester City. He is an incredible talent.

Jack’s development over the past few seasons both for club and country has been plain for everybody to see. His natural talent together with his commitment to improve as a player, has seen him become one of the most exciting attacking players in world football today.

I am certain that the fans are going to love seeing him in our team. Pep loves the way he plays, and we all feel he is an ideal fit for Manchester City. Our style and his style are a perfect match. I’m excited to watch him over the coming years.

A boyhood Villa fan, Grealish predominantly featured on the left side of attack in a 4-2-3-1/4-3-3 under Dean Smith, but what exactly will he bring to Pep Guardiola’s side, where does he fit in at City and where does it leave Villa’s assets?

We’ll attempt to answer those questions and assess his potential FPL worth in the article below.

PROFILE AND STATS

Grealish is a player with real natural ability and flair, especially when carrying the ball from deeper areas.

Statistically, he is one of the very best creators in the Premier League.

He was among the top three players for chances created in each of the last two seasons, while his total of 12 assists in 2020/21 was bettered only by Bruno Fernandes (£12.0m).

What’s more, he missed almost three months of the campaign due to a shin injury and hit those numbers while playing for the 11th-best team in the division.

2020/21’s top chance creators

In terms of goals, he is by no means prolific but has improved in recent seasons.

Grealish ended 2020/21 with six Premier League goals, averaging 0.18 expected goals (xG) per 90 minutes, while his total of 37 shots in the box ranked 21st amongst all midfielders.

It’s also worth noting that his dribbling ability often leads to the winning of free-kicks in dangerous areas. In fact, Grealish was the most fouled player in the final third of the pitch in both 2019/20 and 2020/21. That could be good news for Kevin De Bruyne (£12.0m), who is City’s primary set-piece taker.

Not sure grealish gets enough goals to be worth the money at city

    Mahrez way more explosive

I think Jack will be in our teams at some point in the season but agree that Mahrez is better to start with at least

Why dont pick KDB . He is injury prone maybe but if he can stay fit, he the most likely start all games and benefitted from a lotnof freekick

From the highlights (for what that's worth) he looked like the most dangerous man on the pitch. I think one of the pivotal questions of the preseason is will Jota start consistently. If the answer is yes, there may be no player even remotely more essential.

I think he's worth the risk as long as you have a couple of guaranteed starts on your bench - he's a nice price to slot in as a third midfielder.

Well, the issue here is when he doesn't start, he comes on for one-point cameos, which you don't want.

Interested to know if they are strong thoughts or arguments against the below three players. I have a slot in my team for this price and struggling to pick between them.

Jota in the short term for sure. He is explosive and looks like he will start initially. Same argument can be made for Greenwood, I just think Jota is a bit better.

Wilson an injury doubt- prefer Antonio at that price
Deeney i dont feel is nailed, only played 19 times last season. Sarr feels a better watford pick

To me that doesn't clue us into whether he's staying or going, just saving face from the fans

Guardiola's comments today were more telling, if Levy had quoted something outrageous and was being unreasonable pep would have said we have no chance to sign kane but he didn't so I think the deal gets done

Pep said Spurs don't want to sell.

Kane will be a good boy and play for Spurs if he's not sold, his comments prove that, and Levy knows it. Makes no sense to sell when he will stay committed.

            Kane is too nice.

            2. @persecuted_by_mods
                4 years, 8 months ago

Yeah nobody wants to sell their best player, but if they want to go and the money is right it happens. Levy wants more money simple as, and by now pep would know what was asked for and I think if negotiations were going that terribly he would have just said they can't sign kane

Then just transfer Watkins to Jimmy, you are allowed transfers and have no idea if Jimmy or wolves have any form

Strong starts are important. Villa have infested big time, their forwards could return regardless.

3 GWs is an acceptable risk given they have two newly promoted sides & Newcastle (ASM & Wilson have injuries, keeper only just getting back to fitness etc.)

Here is my BruNO team, actually really like it (with 1m ITB):

          Bachman
          Digne • Trent • White
          Salah • Son • Havertz • Sarr • Greenwood
          Antonio • Ings

Bench: Llorente • Omobamidele • Obefami • Foster

Planning to do Havertz to either Grealish / Mahrez / Sancho depending on the situation

          Bachmann
          Taa, Veltman, Coufal
          Salah, Son, Havertz, Sancho, Buendia
          Bamford, Toney
          Foster, White, Obafemi, Omo

          A) GW1: ESR (BRE) & GW2: Toney (CRY)
          B) GW1: Jota (NOR) & GW2: Jota (BUR)

All bearing in mind Jota is probably on borrowed time, whilst ESR (or ARS defender, as I have White/Chambers - exact tbc) rotate fine fixture-wise and would be ready for GW4.

Thanks. I was on that, just aware Jota likely to start GW1 & Norwich...

Would you rather play an Arsenal defender, or ESR, or Toney vs. Arsenal?

I have the exact same plan on A. Unless Arsenal sign another attacking midfielder I think ESR is potentially under priced. Also Toney for weeks 2 & 3 is good

Cheers mate. Same thought chain really. ESR doesn't jump out stats wise too much, but he's looked good when I've seen him play.

5.5m is a steal if he's consistently playing.

Still reckon Toney is a wait and see but you don't really want to get left behind if he's the cheapie forward that starts firing, right? (Villa not a fab fixture, but I probably would be starting him too.)

I think he (ESR) could have a huge season - really underrated player. And don't forget he only started playing half way through last season.

I've looked a 4.5m and 5.0m players and other than Tella no one interests me. I decided the extra outlay will hopefully be worth it.

Toney is in my team, but I'm not totally convinced. I think at his price and with his history he's worth the risk

With ESR being low priced 5.5 it affects our view, we think we should be spending more. "You can 'upgrade' ESR to a 7.5-8.0.." they say, but I think it's one of those psychological biases that we hear about. I mean to say if ESR started the season at 6.0-7.0 then it would conversely attract more managers to him. You're right I think Arteta will push and drive him on. He's in the ten position for a top ten club.
Look at last season with Gundo, he was the best player in the game for a spell last season, but we were still adverse to captaining him, thinking instead we must captain only a premium priced player.

          A) Barnes Buendia DCL
          B) Harrison Jota Ings

The fist option is probably a bit less risky, but I'm tempted by the second. Any suggestions?
