GET STARTED AND ENTER A TEAM HERE

Hello all, I hope you are well. Last time out I wrote about my obsession with Aurelien Tchouameni and the importance of his player type for my team building on the Academy weekly game. I call him a ‘foundation player’. I said that the foundation player is not a 50-points-a-week grinder, rather an all-around powerhouse with a reasonable chance of decisive action (goal, assist). And, as if to help my argument, Tchouameni has continued his crazy run of form. He really is superb.

Today, continuing to think about how to build your teams each week, I will be talking about defenders.

If you have played the Academy weekly game you will know that fullbacks are more heavily punished by the matrix than their central counterparts. They get hit hard for lacking a high volume of touches and defensive actions and within their touches ‘losing possession’ a high proportion of the time via the more risky passes/crosses they execute.

As such, unless you gamble on regular matrix breakers, Achraf Hakimi or Trent Alexander-Arnold, then you absolutely must be looking to deploy at least one centre-back in your line-ups. And further, you need to be looking at ball-playing centre backs in possession-heavy teams.

These ball-playing centre-halves develop large all-around scores. And by that, I mean that their overall contribution to the game will be large, through volume of passing and defensive actions.

Now, as many users of this website will know, a key strategy when playing large participation (and in the Academy’s instance, near restrictionless) Fantasy Football games is picking against the grain. That means while everyone else will be looking at Messrs Upamecano, Timber, Van Dijk or Marquinhos, you should be looking to gain an edge through scouting and digging up similar players with a potentially lower selection volume.

So, if I want to go against the template, who am I looking at as lesser-known centre-backs who can grab scores that still put them up there with the best? Again, it is worth repeating, look for players in high possession, defensively sound teams with high passing volume. A centre-half who is a goal threat is also a big bonus.

SVEN BOTMAN

Despite their recent mauling by PSG, Lille have become a much more defensively sound team. Further, Sven Botman is having another huge season. And, as you can see from his recent scores, he is almost immune from his team’s less defensively assured performances. He has a very attractive level of passing and defensive actions and is a strong goal threat.

CASTELLO LUKEBA

Castello Lukeba Jr is having a surprise breakout season. Playing alongside Jerome Boateng in place of Jason Denayer, Lukeba has made himself near undroppable despite the big Belgian’s return from injury. Again, Lukeba has a good passing volume and he also excels in duels.

WILLIAM SALIBA

William Saliba is showing Arsenal fans what they can look forward to next season. He has been positively Van Dijk-esque for Marseille. He is the only member of their defence that is undroppable under Jorge Sampaoli. He exudes confidence and has all of the qualities we are looking for: passing volume, defensive actions and a target for Dimitri Payet at corners and free kicks. Plus, Marseille have become somewhat of a defensive behemoth recently.

EVAN N’DICKA

Evan Ndicka has gone from decent prospect at Auxerre to undroppable defensive machine in his fourth season at Frankfurt. His form this season has been somewhat of a surprise but he has been consistent enough for it not to be a streak. He has three goals in the league in 2021/22 and averages over 70 touches per game.

And so there we have it. Some ball-playing centre backs, somewhat against the grain, who could help you hit the big scores in the Academy’s weekly tournament. And as mentioned above, I do like the two centre-back strategy: when deployed alongside the foundation player, it can see your team hit very high base scores.

However, is the ‘two centre-back’ strategy enough to win you prizes in non-price capped and near restrictionless tournaments like the Academy’s? Maybe. Maybe not.

And so, next time around I will be looking at attacking players: a key component of any line-up and a position that, if you double up on, could see you hitting huge scores.

even if he blanks four games in a row it's a 4pt average. In all likelihood he won't, and will still be carrying games in hand following that

No. But its not about the TC for me.

I had 5 DGW players coming into 25 and 1FT (which used to bring in Bruno). I'd have needed a hit (or go without Bruno) this week just for Salah, let alone any of the other players primed to do well. However squad in good shape for 27 and planning a 28 WC anyway as got a lot of deadwood that needs losing.

Yeah I'll lose 1x Salah points on a lot of people, but the Bruno + gains this week *should* exceed that for me. And hoping for some differentials to gain rank - at 350k might as well try something to get close to top 100k

On a FH. What's better combination of players to own for DGW26:

    A) Ramsdale, Semedo, Odegaard, Kane, Edouard

    B) Pope, Tierney, Cornet, Lacazette, Jimenez

Just when I thought I had a solid plan to navigate through the next 2 weeks without using chips. Whilst I would be fielding 11 players in 27 for only 1 hit, I have just realised that 3 pairs of players will be playing each other which I hate. King and Dennis v DDG, Bowen v Saiss and Raphinha v Reguilon. This scenario is really sub optimal. May have to re-consider plans now.

I wouldn't think too much about it. It lowers your ceiling but raises your floor. You're hedging your own bets.

The only time I really care about maximising returns in this way is right at the start of the season with unlimited FTs as I don't want to start off at a disadvantage. I also consider it to a lesser extent during wildcards, but by then the in-form players have revealed themselves and so I will accept the odd A vs B if necessary.

Best striker to play for this week for £6.5m or less? Have Dennis already.

Weghorst is the most tempting given four fixtures in two weeks (if fit of course).

I don't think he's long for my team with the fixture run he has.
liv AVL tot is a bad run and he has no double GWs that might fall into place either.

I'm also struggling to sell the mids I have. And I have to sell one to buy Saka.
        Salah, Jota, Mahrez, Maddison, Bowen.

I intend to. But if Bowen is injured and not playing this week, I'd rather sell him than bench. I can FH him in GW27 if I need and then in GW28-30 I'm happy to go without. Can WC him back in later if need be.

Hmmmm... Good point about losing him in 28-30 and getting back with WC in 31. WHU fixtures are unreal 31-33, mad to go without him. However, you're talking about ditching the form player and arguably the best value of FPL this season. If it's not a big injury, then keeping him should do no harm, bench should cover. If it's about getting Saka, it could work or backfire since Arsenal's fixtures until 30 is better for their defence not attack

I think 34-8 looks a bit uninviting (che ARS nor MCI bha), but for me 31-3 (EVE bre BUR) is probably worth hanging in for. May want Mount & Maddison in by then though so we'll see.

Not sure I can agree Villa is a bad fixture considering their only clean sheets in the last 11 were against Norwich and Everton. Liverpool have been a bit lucky defensively in a few games and conceded 3 to West Ham already this season. Spurs have conceded 9 in their last 4. Bowen is arguably the most in-form player in the league. I can't fathom wanting to get rid.

West Ham's xG is actually not that good. Bowen has been the hot hand for sure, but form is with you until it's not. It doesn't necessarily keep going especially through tougher fixtures. You can reason that any team is attackable in the league other than City but I don't like those fixtures. Liverpool, Villa and Spurs.

We'll see. If he's injured this week I think I'll risk it. I also have the WC in 31 fallback.

That's fair, I guess I just don't see those as poor fixtures myself or a drop off in form as of yet to warrant dropping him myself, but you are right that sometimes you need to take that jump if you feel it's the right time despite good form. I did it myself with Gray earlier this season and it worked out so this may work for you.

If he's out in 26, I don't see much reason to keep since I don't think he's among the top 5 midfielders to own between GW28-30.

Since I'm FH'ing in 27, I don't need to worry about Bowen that week. And then you get that run of liv AVL tot which I'm happy to go without him for.

    Wolves v Leeds
    Villa v Arsenal

    Plus maybe Burnley v Southampton

Would you FH with those fixtures?

      Depends on your team.

FA Cup Round 5 will unfold many things.

If I'm not mistaken, Everton lose and Eve vs Wat is on. Liverpool lose (although very unlikely) and Liv vs Mun is on. Palace lose vs Stoke and Cry vs New is on

Team dependent. For me, no FH

Yes because I’ll have 1 player and could have 15 free hitting

No I'll have 6 players (maybe 7 with Broja). Even if I had fewer, I wouldn't be thrilled having to spend FH on only 3-4 fixtures

It's the classic - you want the fixtures to be limited and different, but too limited and different and it's not worth wasting the chip when the FH average is likely to be low.

I think the best way of looking at it is to look at a realistic scenario for all players. It's very subjective but the best team might* be:

      Sa
      Semedo, Tierney, Gabriel
      Maddison, Saka, Coutinho, Ramsey, Raphina/Mbueno
      Jimenez, Toney

Maybe add Broja if that fixture materialises.

There don't appear to be multiple attacking returns from that team. The best case scenario for me is 11x6 = 60 (any bonus will be cancelled out by goals conceded, cards etc.

How many of them would you own already? I will personally have 5-6. Many managers will have 5ish.So you are FHing for maybe 5-6 extra players. Those players are worth a maximum of probably 30 points. Realistically 15-20. Does this help the calculation? 5-6 extra players in a DGW later might be worth more. They might not!

Any points combination is probably reliant on two teams keeping clean sheets too, which must be borne in mind.

      *open to speculation

Obviously I have not factored in captaincy here, but I have assumed that any captain total will be absorbed by the fact that not all players in the team will return!

    Play two of:

    Digne (Wat H)
    Ramsey (Wat H)
    Broja (Eve H)

2FT and £4.7m ITB. I will do Bruno to Salah with one of my FT to give me this team, which of the below is the best option? Leaning towards taking the hit.
Plan is to FH in GW27 so not worried about too many Liverpool or Arsenal. Also not sure if I should play Reguilon as may not start both and one is City.

    A) Foden to Son
    B) Coufal to Tierney
    C) Both for -4

    Ramsdale
    TAA, Cancelo, Reguilon,
    Saka, Salah, Jota, Foden, Bowen
    Antonio, Dennis

    DDG, Digne, Coufal, Archer

If Weghorst is fit, would you do Edouard to big Wout for a hit?

Over 26 and 27, it would seem like Weghorst gets 4 games to probably 2.5 for Edouard.

How does this plan look? Ronaldo, Ramsey, Livramento > Lacazette, Saka, Tierney for -8. Plan to FH 27. Anyone else I should target?

    Would give me:
    Foster
    TAA Cancelo Tierney
Salah (TC) Jota Bowen Raphinha Saka
    Lacazette Dennis

    De Gea Antonio Dawson Dalot

Good GW for captaincy punt since no obvious candidate. Son/Kane vs Leeds, Bruno vs Watford, Burnley's double, JWP/Broja vs Norwich to name a few

This will be my team this week after my 2FTs:

    Ramsdale
    Cancelo Regulion TAA
Salah (TC) Jota Madison Foden Maddison
    King Denis

    DDG Antonio Lamptey Dalot

I have 2FHs and I’m not using either of them this week or next. I’ll simply bench my pool players.

Any need to take any hits?
