We continue our analysis of the newly released 2022/23 Premier League fixture list with a look at which teams rotate well from a Fantasy perspective.

We’re using our customisable Season Ticker for this article, a tool that allows you to filter clubs by rotation amongst other sortable options.

The idea here is to simply find a couple of low-cost Fantasy Premier League (FPL) assets whose fixtures dovetail, either to offer successive home matches or, at the very least, a prolonged spell of favourable opponents.

We’re focusing on budget defensive options, mainly because many Fantasy managers will resist benching premium assets.

In theory, this approach can help maximise the points returns from two low-cost picks, freeing up funds for the premium assets like Mohamed Salah and Erling Haaland.

It should be said that the rotation strategy is shunned by some Fantasy managers, as anticipating where a clean sheet or attacking return will come from is often not just as straightforward as picking the player with a home match or better-on-paper fixture. The move towards ‘big at the back’ also means fewer of us will consider having two £4.5m-and-under defenders in our squads.

HOME/AWAY ROTATION PAIRINGS IN 2022/23

There are 10 pairings that alternate home fixtures perfectly next season (credit goes to Fantasy Football Scout user Portsmouth Bubblejet for the research):

Paired team 1Paired team 2
ArsenalTottenham Hotspur
Aston VillaBournemouth
Brighton and Hove AlbionLeeds United
ChelseaFulham
Leicester CityNottingham Forest
LiverpoolEverton
Manchester CityManchester United
Newcastle UnitedSouthampton
West Ham UnitedBrentford
Wolverhampton WanderersCrystal Palace

Some of the above couplings are decided by geographical proximity, created by the need to spread police resourcing: Liverpool/Everton, Manchester United/Manchester City and Spurs/Arsenal being notable examples.

And a number of these combinations are largely irrelevant when it comes to rotation pairings because of the price tags associated with at least one of the respective clubs’ assets and their ability to score points on the road – Fantasy managers aren’t likely to alternate benchings for Kieran Tierney or Ivan Perisic simply because they have an away fixture, for example.

So for more realistic pairings, we have to box a little bit more clever.

BEST ROTATION PAIRINGS: GAMEWEEKS 1-16

For these pairings, we’ll look no further than Gameweek 16. It’s after that point that the Premier League takes a six-week break for the World Cup, which will be a good time to take stock. Wildcards or – if we are given them – unlimited transfers will also be flying at this point.

BRENTFORD/NEWCASTLE

Pairing Brentford and Newcastle through to Gameweek 15 avoids any meeting with a side that finished in the top seven last season.

A third of the 15 matches are against newly promoted clubs, while there are two home fixtures against an Everton side who had a woeful away record in 2021/22 and a brace of meetings with a Wolverhampton Wanderes outfit who were the division’s fourth-lowest scorers.

We’ve stopped before Gameweek 16 as Manchester City and Chelsea provide the opposition in the final round of matches before the World Cup.

There should be plenty of Brentford defensive options in the £4.5m bracket, although it remains to be seen how FPL price up Newcastle assets such as Dan Burn given the money being pumped into the club. We can certainly forget about full-backs Matt Targett and Kieran Trippier being any cheaper than £5.0m.

FPL managers might just want to ‘set and forget’ Bees assets such as David Raya anyway: Thomas Frank’s troops don’t meet one of last season’s top four until Gameweek 12, while Manchester City, Spurs and Liverpool aren’t concerns until November onwards.

Diaz form since his move, Salah form since AFCON, still at an impasse over his contract, not listening to Liverpool's request for a scan on an injury before this set of internationals followed by playing with an injury in their first match and making the injury worse to the point that he missed the remaining games. Not ideal preparation for the start of the season. It's also about value and fitting in other players, there couid be a 3-4m difference between Salah and Diaz. Looking at the fixtures having premiums from City and Spurs I'd be happy to rotate captaincy between them for a fair while.

I'm not suggesting Diaz will anywhere near match Salah. It's about points-per-million and creating a balanced squad. Sacrifices have to be made and Salah and Son are my main ones. I'm committed to 3 premium defenders and Haaland, and a decent starting XI every GW.

I'm looking at a similar setup to Nate, although I'm also trying to cram Darwin in there. Rationale is mainly that I dont like the sacrifices required by having Håland, Son & Salah, so it comes down to a comparison of the semi-premiums - e.g. Diaz v Kulusevski v Foden, and I think Diaz will score highest of this group. I'm hoping to play sth like this:
          Raya
          Robertson Cancelo Doherty Trippier
          Son Diaz Martinelli Johnson
          Håland Darwin

    Raya (4.5)
    TAA (8.0) Cancelo (7.0) Tomiyasu (4.5) Fofana (4.5)
    Salah (13.0) Son (11.5) Bruno G (6.0) Mbuemo (5.5)
    Haaland (13.0) Solanke (6.0)

I would suggest knocking Solanke down to a 4.5 striker, but then you'd have 2x4.5 forwards which is never a good idea.
Basically, you're proving my view that you can't have all of Haaland, Salah and Son with a viable defence. Maybe TAA > VVD would be a viable fix though.

        1. Athletic Nasherbo
          • 9 Years
          4 years, 29 days ago

Yeah I did this draft to highlight this exact point too in my mind. I plan to go safe and TAA could really hurt me with those fixtures. Probably best to stick with my current draft which has Kulu rather than Son, amongst others.

I don't think any midfielders under 6, maybe 6.5 are worthwhile at this stage. One will likely emerge in the first couple of GWs, but I wouldn't be looking to start any.

You think? I truly think value is key this year with such big hitters. Mbuemo back to OOP with Eriksen leaving?

                4 years, 29 days ago

It's the Eriksen leaving bit that worries me about Mbuemo and Toney. I'd be more interested in the Brentford keeper/defence. Yes, value is key but I think the vast majority of the sub-6m midfielders will be duds. The one or two who turn out to be value will emerge after the season is underway. You're more secure spending the money in defence.

I think without Eriksen Brentford’s form is unsustained, but they started well without.

Not that well. I started with Toney - he took too long to get going, and Mbuemo kept hitting the woodwork! They'll be more expensive this time anyway.

But my main point is that unless a 6m superstar emerges pre-season, I'd rather have a premium 6m defender and 4.5m midfield benchie than a 6m midfielder and 4.5 defender benchie. The 6m know-quantity defender is more secure than the might-be-okay 6m midfielder.

An Arsenal defender would be alright. Ideally Tierney but prob too expensive. Gabriel next, then Tomiyasu if 5m or less.

Tomiyasu is great at 4.5. But yeah 5.0 is tough. Arsenal defence should be good though with those fixtures just it’s hard to pick one. Hopefully pre-season will unveil if Saliba will be an option.

I think you make way too many compromises to fit in Salah, Son + Haaland. You don't need 3 captain picks 67% chance you choose the wrong one each week.

that's a quite interesting way to see it, the more big hitters you have, the higher % chance of choosing the wrong one!

I can see Jesus getting off to a flyer if he signs as the fixtures are great & we are adding more creativity. The guy has never been the main man up front or played week in week out so I think he could explode!

So 1 for me but I think a better option will emerge for around 6 mil which is what Mbeumo will likely be e.g. Aaronson

Here's a selection of players who are currently within the top 20 in market for the Top Goalscorer this coming season (Haaland 9/2 fav) with their Goals scored/Games played in all competitions for club and country in the 2022 calendar year . It hints amongst other things that Mitro's essential 😆 Salah needs to go looking for a new pair of shooting boots to justify 13m and Diaz & Lukaku are as lethal as each other!

The numbers never lie remember 😀

    Mitrovic 23/29
    Haaland 18/20
    Son 18/28
    Kane 18/32
    Nunez 16/21
    KDB 14/27
    Bowen 13/28
    Ronaldo 12/23
    Solanke 11/22
    Havertz 11/31
    Salah 11/35
    Jota 10/37
    Toney 9/19
    Jesus 9/23
    Lukaku 8/27
    Diaz 8/30
    Vardy 6/11

I'm strongly considering starting with Cancelo, Robbo, James + Digne.
Spending around £31m (including sub) on defenders feels excessive but seems perfectly logical to me. 35 assists between them last season and their respective clubs totalled 68 clean sheets.

I think Conte would have to change the formation. Kane and Son up top, Eriksen in behind. With him being the creative outlet, Kane would stay higher up rather than keep dropping deep. You'd want Bissouma and Bentacaur sitting deep.

I reckon after Eriksen, one more central defender would complete the set.

Unrealistic. You've got to compromise somewhere. Maybe just swap one of Trent / Robbo out

If my maths and estimations are accurate enough you're spending £59m on 6 players, leaving £41m for 9 more. Doesn't work

I think it will be £57.5M but still....

            I've based it off:
            Salah 13m
            Haaland 12m
            Son 11.5m
            Trent 8m
            Robbo 7.5m
            Cancelo 7m

After replying to Kaptain Kane got me thinking of a nice zombie team.
    Meet Sons of Anoraky
    Ederson, Alisson
    Roberson, jannsson, Emerson, Swanson, Ferguson
    Son, Harrison, Erikson, Maddison, gudmunndson
    Richarlison, Wilson, Richardson

Probs beat my last seasons team anyway!!
