Our series on the newly-promoted Premier League sides continues with this look at Nottingham Forest’s head coach, Steve Cooper.

We assess his background, tactical approach, tendency to rotate and openness with the press ahead of Forest’s Fantasy Premier League (FPL) debut, as well as looking at areas of his squad he might strengthen in.

An article on the Championship play-off winners’ defence and attack will follow.

To help us with our research, we spoke to Fantasy Football Scout’s founding father and Forest supporter, Mark Sutherns, to provide a fan’s view.

Everything you need to know about fellow new boys Fulham and Bournemouth can be found here.

WHAT IS COOPER’S BACKGROUND?

After a fairly unremarkable playing career in Welsh football, Steve Cooper stepped into coaching at academy level, first with Wrexham and then with Liverpool, a period which saw him develop such young talents as Raheem Sterling and Trent Alexander-Arnold.

He then moved to the England set-up, guiding the under-17s side to World Cup success in 2017, with his team widely praised for their attractive, attacking style of play.

“It’s about playing our way… we want to play with purpose, dominate possession, play forward and get the ball back as quick as we can. That’s always our plan.” – Steve Cooper discussing his team’s approach whilst England Under-17s manager

Having achieved international success with the Three Lions, Cooper took his first step into senior football management with Swansea City in June 2019. During his two seasons in charge, he led the Swans to back-to-back play-off qualifications, but suffered defeat on both occasions and departed after losing to Brentford in the 2020/21 final.

Cooper’s next job was at the City Ground in September 2021, where Nottingham Forest were rock bottom of the Championship upon his arrival. The side he inherited from Chris Hughton had lost six of their first seven games, but he instantly transformed their fortunes, guiding them to Premier League promotion at the first time of asking via the play-offs.

In his 46 games in charge at Forest, Cooper has won 27, drawn 11 and lost just eight.

WHAT TACTICS DO FOREST PLAY UNDER COOPER?

Above: Nottingham Forest’s starting XI vs Huddersfield Town in the play-off final

Steve Cooper has mainly used a 3-4-1-2 formation at Forest, a system he settled on during an excellent second half of the 2021/22 campaign.

A back three of Joe Worrall, Steve Cook and Scott McKenna formed a tight defence, with Djed Spence deployed as an advanced wing-back on the right. The youngster was not only allowed over the halfway line but actively encouraged to bomb down the wing.

Above: Djed Spence’s 2021/22 season heatmap, via SofaScore

However, with Spence not expected to return to the City Ground next season, it will be interesting to see who will play this role in the Premier League, as it does carry potential in the current set-up.

Central midfielders James Garner and Ryan Yates were largely box-to-box, with Philip Zinckernagel at his best in a number 10 role behind forwards Keinan Davis and Brennan Johnson.

Having previously been deployed in a wider role, the speedy Johnson thrived in a front-two alongside Davis and was the outstanding young player in the Championship last season.

Matters are further complicated, however, given that three of those aforementioned players – Garner, Zinckernagel and Davis – were also on loan and have since returned to their parent clubs.

Cooper can be flexible but already has a preferred system tailor-made for the Premier League. He’ll unquestionably go with a 3-5-2 with the wing-backs pushing up very high in home matches, while sitting deeper in away matches. I imagine we’ll sign a defensive midfielder – perhaps Ainsley Maitland-Niles – to partner Yates in central midfield and unlike Garner last season, they will likely remain more disciplined, with Yates the most likely to raid the box late when in possession.

Cooper has shown willingness to switch formation according to opponent and the match situation and will revert to a straight back four if he feels the midfield is being overrun. However, he’ll need the personnel to do that so much depends on the squad size as to the level of flexibility available to the manager. Yates can be used as part of a back three, so we might see McKenna sacrificed in some games to chase a result, with Yates an option to drop back should he seek to revert back later in matches.

Don’t be fooled by the front two either, as the forwards will often drop into wide areas between the full-back and centre-backs to open up gaps for a raiding number 10. This is why I personally find Johnson’s classification as a forward as a little unkind given that he not only shows propensity to naturally take up a wide role, he’ll also often be instructed to take up this position, even in a front two.” – Mark Sutherns

WHAT STYLE OF FOOTBALL DOES COOPER FAVOUR?

“Our ambition is to play a certain style of football. It is not easy because I am asking for us to play a brave, positional game which is about trying to be creative and exciting. Those are things that are hard things to do in the game. Sometimes we get it right, other times we don’t. That’s football.” – Steve Cooper

Forest are likely to be a counter-attacking side next season, which is where they were at their best in 2021/22, with plenty of fast transitions.

In the Championship, they looked to dominate the ball and score goals, but were equally comfortable mixing it up. For example, at Swansea in April, they had just 30% possession but still ran out 5-1 winners.

They aren’t necessarily a pressing side but do look to win the ball back high up the pitch when there is an opportunity.

Can their current style translate to the top-flight? Some alterations, of course, will need to occur, but their approach last season should stand them in good stead, as evidenced by their FA Cup run:

“Forest are not a defensive team, they just defend well and, when they win possession and attack they are often quick and decisive. Cooper will likely create his tactics around those qualities, conceding possession to the majority of opponents and relying on organisation and Henderson’s shot stopping to keep Forest in games, while looking to the front two to provide a clinical cutting edge when the ball is turned over. So don’t expect high possession or even a high press, instead watch for Forest adopting an organised shape and then springing quickly, moving the ball without hesitation from back to front. The two wide centre-backs are often key to progression, they will be charged with driving into midfield, attracting defensive cover to spring the two wing-backs who, in turn, will look to slot in the front two with their pace in behind. Awoniyi – in the Keinan Davis role – will be expected to hold the ball up and bring others into the game, particularly the number 10 who will be charged on joining the attack at all times.” – Mark Sutherns

DOES COOPER LIKE A SETTLED SIDE OR WILL HE ROTATE?

looks decent, but Treble Arsenal with double mids is a bit much, swap Ode for Trossard or ASM or some other 6.5 to spread the burden a bit imo

for sure, i'd be all over Rash at that price if he shows a bit of life, i do have a soft spot for him though ever since he came of the bench to grab me a hattrick as captain in a UCL game a couple of years ago

I think you sacrifice too much elsewhere by going for three premiums, but I’ve seen the approach work in the early season before.

The two Arsenal mids and Johnson is just a bit too flimsy looking for me.

I thought 3mium was a no-no until I knocked up a draft last night - and I like it. It boils down to who scores more:
Kane and 2 mid-price defenders or 3 premium defenders.

Nice, assuming there will be 4.5 and 4m non squad player prices ... I've got a bad feeling FPL towers know there will be many people going 5-4-1 or 4-5-1 and might make it difficult on purpose

Quietly happy with this draft. Feeds my incentive and desire to be different, yet feels relatively safe too. Think I’ve picked the best Pool assets, hence no Mo. I don’t want 5-3-2 as it’s wildly inflexible: yes James is better than Johnson.

    Alisson
    TAA Robertson Tomiyasu Jonny
    KdB Fernandes Bruno G
    Haaland Wilson Johnson

    Steele K.D-H Coufal/Mykolenko Lerma(4.5)

    Ederson
    TAA / James / Tierney / Cash / Trippier
    Salah / Diaz / Saka / Mount
    Halland

    Fodder bench.

Liking this draft. 2x premium defence, remaining 3x very attacking.

Salah + 3 x 8.0 mids, where there are plenty of options.

Only negative is zero bench. But that’s a risk I’ve often taken early season.

Have you gone for Fernandes because of this CR7 news? Not sure about him, reckon Diaz is better value, ederson not Allison maybe even de gea! This leaves cash to upgrade Jonny and the bench

I quite like Chelsea/Arsenal fixtures, plus ideally want as many of those 8.0 spots in my team as possible. Think the players at that price look great and want the flexibility to swap them about easily.

The no bench is a definite risk though. Hoping the new subs rule means there are in fact less total blanks from players though.

You've thought it through, looks good. I think a weak bench is a calculated gamble worth taking so long as your starting XI looks pretty much nailed.

Like it! I’m also a big fan of the 8m midfielders so like the approach. Although I think there’s enough budget midfield options to downgrade one to a 6/6.5 to enable you to get a city defender in (I personally don’t think Ederson is worth locking up a city spot)

When these Forest prices came out, I nabbed a couple for my bench purely due to their low prices (4.5 mid, 5.0 forward). But reading Mark's analysis, I'm quite excited about Forest.

Left field opinion coming out of the deadzone here:
I'm going to defend these alleged 'over-priced' forwards.

The prices are not aimed at GW1 squads. The point is, once the season is underway, FPL Towers can't alter any, bar the market force led rise and falls.
Some of these forwards are going to have good seasons. DCL and Bamford might recover their pre-injury form of 2 seasons ago. Others will emerge - they always do. The bandwagons will be too obvious if they come in at lower prices; I think as the season progresses, their prices will give us something to think about rather than no-brainers, which is how all FPL decisions should be.

29 year old England international near London.

We don't know who that is.
In the current international squad including those recently if not currently in the England squad:

29 years old - Mings, Maguire, Sam Johnstone.
The first 2 don't live near London; the third has just moved to Crystal Palace.
The first 2 are capped; the third has no caps.
Harry Kane is 29 later this month. Whew!

That's what I got off a quick google search anyway. I dunno.

It'll be obvious if a player is left off the squad list, maybe not so clear if missing from a friendly because international players aren't all back yet.

Think Davies will be at risk more if rumours of Spurs going for Clément Lenglet happen.
As for Leicester, sounds like Justin could be moved for development playing left back (instead of Thomas) - bit more recent news here: https://www.leicestermercury.co.uk/sport/football/transfer-news/leicester-transfers-colwill-tielemans-ketelaere-7289954

So Spurs will have Romero, Lenglet, Dier and Davies. Last 2 are expendable in my book. May be in for one more class defender as well. Mind you, Lenglet has been poor recently.

Davies will start the season as first choice LCB. I'd be shocked if our back 3 changed at all from end of last season for the first few games barring injuries. Lenglet in as rotation option as Davies had no cover last season. One more CB expected to compete with Dier

I think that he's just become a little too expensive for me, taking account Richarlison/Kulu/Perisic/Moura and 5 subs. The big plus is that he rotates beautifully with Salah for the captaincy .... not a small consideration, but that applies to Kane too.

      1. Eze Really?

Down to 2 premiums for various reasons out of:
        Son, Salah, KDV, Haaland, Kane.
        Downsizing:
        Sterling, Ronaldo,
Or getting 2 8 mil players instead of a 5.5 with a premium. Or very big at the back

Having virtually all the prices before launch spoils it for me. I really don't like these social media business types.

    Anyway, 541 team:

    Ederson
    Cancelo, TAA, VVD, White, Tomiyasu
Salah, Saka, Mount, Rice (or Elanga if he looks like playing)
    Haaland

Bench: 4.0 GK, Mateta, the other one from above, 4.5 fwd

Quite inflexible but I have the players I want.

I rate the manager far above the other promotees and that can make all the difference when a squad lacks PL quality. I'm relieved Forest have bench fodder because I don't want Cherries or Fulham clogging up my bench no matter how cheap.

          Definitely not starters for me.
The only 5m forward (currently) - Surridge - with 5 subs, I'm guessing he'll get the odd few minutes.
and the first 4.5 mid who might get on the pitch, again prob as sub - Colback.
They're my 2nd/3rd subs, ideally never to come off my bench!

Haaland, Johnson, Gelhardt atm for me. I believe Johnson is the cheapest starting forward who hasn't failed in PL. Therefore he has the biggest potential to be one of first bandwagons. Fixtures look ok from attacking point of view also.

      A. Its not like they perform when you need them. Anything at base price is enough.

      1. Piggs Boson
        • 14 Years
        4 years, 13 days ago

I think you underestimate the value of 2pts.

It's half a hit, half a goal, 2/3rds an assist. If you go one or two deep into your bench often, it's well worth having someone to come in imo.

        1. Holmes
          • 12 Years
          4 years, 13 days ago

It probably depends on how much you value 2pts. At start of the season, I dont think 2pts is worth 0.5, that can be used in much better way. Different story for 2nd half of the season due to price rise/fall/team value.

Normally there are 1-2 options at base price, so having zero players on bench is kind of rare. (barring injuries and suspensions)

          1. Piggs Boson
            • 14 Years
            4 years, 13 days ago

Yeah, if you can get one for 4.0/4.5 no problem.

But in a 451 or 541 that's just not possible. If you think it about it in terms of ppg, losing 2pts would be like turning a 7.6ppg Salah into a 5.6ppg player. That's losing far more than 0.5m worth of player...

            1. Holmes
              • 12 Years
              4 years, 13 days ago

But investing 1m extra on bench could mean picking Son over Salah, Ronaldo over Kane, Dias over Cancelo, Matip over Robertson for example.

                • 13 Years
                4 years, 13 days ago

Exactly. That's why I've said previously, I'm prepared to go some GWs with 10 or even 9 starters rather than weaken my Starting XI. But in my current draft I'm fine with having Elanga as a semi-active benchie until a proper 4.5 options is revealed.

                • 14 Years
                4 years, 13 days ago

I guess what I'm advocating is not spending a large amount to get a backup striker on the bench, but switching formation to two up top so you can get a 4.5m mid/def there instead.

That way your money is still all in the XI, but on a slightly less efficient player. I think that drop in efficiency is worth the gains of an additional sub.

                  This is in my thinking.
Was set on 5-5-1 with the 5th DEF/5th MID rotating.
But it leaves you either exposed, or wasting funds on a non-playing FWD.
I’m now drawn to 5-3-2 with a playable fourth MID and only needing to find 2x £4.5m options spread across MID/FWD

I've got 3 drafts on LiveFPL - one with one up top and 2 dud benchies, one with 2 up top and one dud benchie, and one with 3 up top. All look viable!

                      2 are 5-4-1
                      1 is 5-3-2

Or you have a player out with a knock for one week that you still want next week.

Or you make an early transfer to hit price changes and get hit with a late injury.

Having someone to step in and fill gaps can not only save you 2 app pts but also prevent hits...

Lundstram from bench with 21 pts was needed once 😉

Please don't let there be a second wave of price releases

What we're mostly waiting for now is the chaff - the all-important 4m keepers and defenders, 4.5 mids and forwards. I doubt we'll get them until the game is released, when Jesus, Laporte, Ederson etc will be revealed too.

That's what I'm hoping, no more trickle releases and the game comes out today. Sick in bed for a while now and still haven't done my first draft

Is the De Jong to United deal going through?

My hunch is yes. Barca are fannying about to get more add-ons.
But they need to move now if they're to poach Bilva off City.

    Morning all

I see lots of 5-4-1 drafts on here / twitter. I think people are yet to factor in
    1. Covid (it’s v high in the UK)
    2. Top 4 schedule

With seemingly no value in 4.5m mids / fwds, I’m thinking 1 probably 2 cheap enabling defenders are going to be required.

    Thoughts?

I think people have factored that in. But it's off-set by the problem that there's currently no back-up striker options that come in at less than 6.0m You'd have to sink at least 3m into players you'd rather keep on the bench. That's unreasonable when there are so many bargains in defence.

5 4 1 is dangerous in terms of balance.
An injury to Haaland for example and where does it leave you.
A lot to think about still.

Haaland to Kane is easy enough

Fine, but limited to 1 choice or it is 2 transfers if you get my meaning. I like 5 4 1 but maybe an 11.5 with a 7.5 to start at the front.

You're still left with the problem that your 7.5 forward is not going to out-perform TAA, Cancelo, Robbo, Chilwell et al. - not long term. You'd have to chop and change and hope you keep hitting hot streaks. I'd rather have the steady security of high-scoring premium defenders. For me, with the forwards, you either go big (9m+) or go home (4.5-5m)

For sure, it is all subjective. I want big at the back but true to my name, the caveat of less clean sheets early on will create a bit of havoc.

Haaland rotation as well if your lone forward doesn't play you're down to 10 men if 5-5-0 is still an invalid formation.
