Our series on the newly-promoted Premier League sides continues with this look at Nottingham Forest’s head coach, Steve Cooper.

We assess his background, tactical approach, tendency to rotate and openness with the press ahead of Forest’s Fantasy Premier League (FPL) debut, as well as looking at areas of his squad he might strengthen in.

An article on the Championship play-off winners’ defence and attack will follow.

To help us with our research, we spoke to Fantasy Football Scout’s founding father and Forest supporter, Mark Sutherns, to provide a fan’s view.

Everything you need to know about fellow new boys Fulham and Bournemouth can be found here.

WHAT IS COOPER’S BACKGROUND?

After a fairly unremarkable playing career in Welsh football, Steve Cooper stepped into coaching at academy level, first with Wrexham and then with Liverpool, a period which saw him develop such young talents as Raheem Sterling and Trent Alexander-Arnold.

He then moved to the England set-up, guiding the under-17s side to World Cup success in 2017, with his team widely praised for their attractive, attacking style of play.

“It’s about playing our way… we want to play with purpose, dominate possession, play forward and get the ball back as quick as we can. That’s always our plan.” – Steve Cooper discussing his team’s approach whilst England Under-17s manager

Having achieved international success with the Three Lions, Cooper took his first step into senior football management with Swansea City in June 2019. During his two seasons in charge, he led the Swans to back-to-back play-off qualifications, but suffered defeat on both occasions and departed after losing to Brentford in the 2020/21 final.

Cooper’s next job was at the City Ground in September 2021, where Nottingham Forest were rock bottom of the Championship upon his arrival. The side he inherited from Chris Hughton had lost six of their first seven games, but he instantly transformed their fortunes, guiding them to Premier League promotion at the first time of asking via the play-offs.

In his 46 games in charge at Forest, Cooper has won 27, drawn 11 and lost just eight.

WHAT TACTICS DO FOREST PLAY UNDER COOPER?

Above: Nottingham Forest’s starting XI vs Huddersfield Town in the play-off final

Steve Cooper has mainly used a 3-4-1-2 formation at Forest, a system he settled on during an excellent second half of the 2021/22 campaign.

A back three of Joe Worrall, Steve Cook and Scott McKenna formed a tight defence, with Djed Spence deployed as an advanced wing-back on the right. The youngster was not only allowed over the halfway line but actively encouraged to bomb down the wing.

Above: Djed Spence’s 2021/22 season heatmap, via SofaScore

However, with Spence not expected to return to the City Ground next season, it will be interesting to see who will play this role in the Premier League, as it does carry potential in the current set-up.

Central midfielders James Garner and Ryan Yates were largely box-to-box, with Philip Zinckernagel at his best in a number 10 role behind forwards Keinan Davis and Brennan Johnson.

Having previously been deployed in a wider role, the speedy Johnson thrived in a front-two alongside Davis and was the outstanding young player in the Championship last season.

Matters are further complicated, however, given that three of those aforementioned players – Garner, Zinckernagel and Davis – were also on loan and have since returned to their parent clubs.

Cooper can be flexible but already has a preferred system tailor-made for the Premier League. He’ll unquestionably go with a 3-5-2 with the wing-backs pushing up very high in home matches, while sitting deeper in away matches. I imagine we’ll sign a defensive midfielder – perhaps Ainsley Maitland-Niles – to partner Yates in central midfield and unlike Garner last season, they will likely remain more disciplined, with Yates the most likely to raid the box late when in possession.

Cooper has shown willingness to switch formation according to opponent and the match situation and will revert to a straight back four if he feels the midfield is being overrun. However, he’ll need the personnel to do that so much depends on the squad size as to the level of flexibility available to the manager. Yates can be used as part of a back three, so we might see McKenna sacrificed in some games to chase a result, with Yates an option to drop back should he seek to revert back later in matches.

Don’t be fooled by the front two either, as the forwards will often drop into wide areas between the full-back and centre-backs to open up gaps for a raiding number 10. This is why I personally find Johnson’s classification as a forward as a little unkind given that he not only shows propensity to naturally take up a wide role, he’ll also often be instructed to take up this position, even in a front two.” – Mark Sutherns

WHAT STYLE OF FOOTBALL DOES COOPER FAVOUR?

“Our ambition is to play a certain style of football. It is not easy because I am asking for us to play a brave, positional game which is about trying to be creative and exciting. Those are things that are hard things to do in the game. Sometimes we get it right, other times we don’t. That’s football.” – Steve Cooper

Forest are likely to be a counter-attacking side next season, which is where they were at their best in 2021/22, with plenty of fast transitions.

In the Championship, they looked to dominate the ball and score goals, but were equally comfortable mixing it up. For example, at Swansea in April, they had just 30% possession but still ran out 5-1 winners.

They aren’t necessarily a pressing side but do look to win the ball back high up the pitch when there is an opportunity.

Can their current style translate to the top-flight? Some alterations, of course, will need to occur, but their approach last season should stand them in good stead, as evidenced by their FA Cup run:

“Forest are not a defensive team, they just defend well and, when they win possession and attack they are often quick and decisive. Cooper will likely create his tactics around those qualities, conceding possession to the majority of opponents and relying on organisation and Henderson’s shot stopping to keep Forest in games, while looking to the front two to provide a clinical cutting edge when the ball is turned over. So don’t expect high possession or even a high press, instead watch for Forest adopting an organised shape and then springing quickly, moving the ball without hesitation from back to front. The two wide centre-backs are often key to progression, they will be charged with driving into midfield, attracting defensive cover to spring the two wing-backs who, in turn, will look to slot in the front two with their pace in behind. Awoniyi – in the Keinan Davis role – will be expected to hold the ball up and bring others into the game, particularly the number 10 who will be charged on joining the attack at all times.” – Mark Sutherns

DOES COOPER LIKE A SETTLED SIDE OR WILL HE ROTATE?

Went on the site to see if game had opened and it’s asking for new password etc. Did that and got on to the confirm personal details page. Keep pressing the update box at the bottom and nothing happens. I’m just stuck on this page even if I log out and log in again. Don’t know what to do.

Just checking - on the app it still takes you as far as your GW38 team from last season, right? And no transfers/prices tab.

Correct. On the website a lot of people have found they can't proceed after Step 4 Update Your Details. Using the latest update of the app and entering the new password you created in Step 3 on the website, the app will take you to Step 4 and the update button should work so you can complete Step 5 and arrive at last season's data.

Great write up, and can't believe for the first season ever I'm considering my own team in ff.

Spence is going to be a miss but I really fancy Williams if we can sign him. I think he's a little more defensively solid then Spence and hopefully a little less error prone.

The key is a creative number 10 and if we can get Gibbs white I would be delighted. He was an absolute menace against us last season, and would release the talents of Johnson and Awoniyi.

I think we might just surprise a few.

    Can't wait.

Yeah could be a bargain for us lot. Is just the right mix of nasty, strong but skillful. In the playoff semi he made my heart sink on more than one occasion. Cooper will develop him as well.

      Johnson or Awoniyi?
Thought no Doherty with Spence coming? Do you think how long Doherty will keep his place?
Is Spence really good? Watching highlight i only see his dribbling, shooting, no defendng, crossing...

It's likely Doherty will be phased out over the season.
As for the striker dilemma, Johnson will be more versatile, I'm guessing cheaper too

I think it's a watching brief initially. Johnson tends to drift out wide but also has the habit of being around the right places at the right time. I've only ever seen Awoniyi on YouTube so who knows how he will settle.

Spence, is a strange one. I can see why spurs want to sign him and honestly best of luck to the lad. He gave us some magic moments, but is he better than Doherty? I'm not sure. His style was to take on his player and so often lost the ball, I can see that being a bigger problem at spurs than it would be for us. Electric on his day though.

I don't know if its the romance of it but fancy Forest to do ok. They seem well set up for the league.

Solid Defensive shape with the ability to transition very quickly will be great for a promoted side.

The secret weapon is cooper. Knows how to develop youth with a strong emphasis on team spirit and togetherness. Remember that alot of these players have been bang average for a while, but cooper has made them have an edge. Spence couldn't even get in the Middlesbrough side, now he's being signed by conte. Absolutely mad.

I think you've hit on it. We don't rely on being in control of a match we are happy to not have possession, which is good because we aren't likely to have it most the time. Johnson's pace will be key.

Yes, but first they need to sign the missing personnel. From a(ny) promoted side I probably don't want anything but a cheap forward. Johnson at 6.0 looks like decent 2nd striker. Having a starting striker as sub or even as a starter in case of one week injury or illness is useful. On their day they can score that unexpected goal against basically anyone. Having Sou def starting against Lei or MCI isn't funny.

Yates could be an interesting 5th mid, right? 8 goals last season, nailed on (im assuming even more so now Garner has left? ), decent aerial threat, likely to come in at 5m max too

Yeah what a rise that young man has had. Loaned to notts county not so long back! But made strides to make it into the first team. Solid player and scored important goals but I think he'd be a frustrating player to own.

Frustrating how? Cos he'll mainly deliver 2 point returns?

I am. People seem to think the price point of Diaz rules him out but IMO there are so few decent fwd options something like Haaland, Nunez, 4.5 feels attractive.

Klopp has a long history of allowing new signings a long time to settle. Diaz is one of the first who was fast tracked. Think at £9m it would be a big risk to start with him as he might only start 1 in 3. For the first few months.

I'm considering it, or perhaps starting with Vardy/Jesus as Darwin placeholder of sorts. I actually think Diaz coming in at 8m makes a Pool triple up with Darwin more viable, e.g.

      Pope (4)
      Cancelo Robertson Doherty Tomiyasu (4.5)
      Son Diaz Martinelli 7m
      Håland Darwin

We've seen Salah tail off at the end of seasons before, the season before last he went through a big run of blanks (Zambian witch doctor) yet at the start of last season he was on fire, as he is the starts of most seasons

          Can't bet against him

          1. MJF
            4 years, 13 days ago

This is my thinking too. A rested Salah is usually lethal. Would rather start with him and have him fail than start without and see him bag a hattrick on the opening weekend.

Forest have signed a great centre back in Niakhate. He is a beast tall, strong and fast.
9 goals and 4 assists as well in 128 Bundesliga matches.
Forest's defence actually looking quite appealing.

Yes, Niakhaté is another good signing for Forest from the Bundesliga to join Awoniyi. In addition to the defensive skills mentioned above, Niakhaté was also a really good team captain and will be a positive influence in the Forest dressing room.

Niakhaté was Mainz 05's designated penalty-taker. When Mainz were awarded three (!) penalties against Bielefeld in March, however, he took the first spot-kick himself but then insisted that two other team-mates, Burkardt and then Ingvartsen, got the chance to convert the next two penalties.

Not seeing that many options I like in the 5.5-6.5m mids atm. Perhaps MacAllister or Harrison?
But I think there's pretty good value in 5m defenders if you dont mind downgrading one of your current backline to free up 1.5m or so.

I could go VVD > Cash which would leave me 7.5, which is annoying need to get up to 8M ideally.

True, that 8m bracket looks super strong this year. Plenty of other options to tinker with defensively like Trent - Robbo, Cancelo - Laporte/Cucurella(?), or even just VVD - 4.5 since I think you could get away with playing someone like Tomiyasu for the initial 8 GWs

Whats the best GK rotation option??

Was looking at Sanchez and Raya. Need to be cheap

If I did that I'd probably go with Raya and Meslier.

Why not just have a decent 5 like Mendy, Ramsdale, Pope or Martinez?

Same money though. I initially had those 2x4.5 but when decent 5.0s were revealed, I figured a 5+4 was better than 2x4.5.

That is cheap but the extra 0.5m to get Mendy surely a no-brainer?

Stuck between these two drafts. Something tells me Jesus will hit the ground running with Saka and have a partnership similar to Kane/Son, particularly with those easy fixtures. Salah or no Salah here?

    Draft A:
    Henderson
Trent, Cancelo, Van Dijk, Perisic, Trippier
    Salah, Saka, Maddison
    Kane, Johnson
    (4.0, 4.0, 4.5, 4.5)

    Draft B:
    Henderson
    Trent, Cancelo, Robertson, Chilwell, Perisic
    Diaz, Saka, Maddison
    Kane, Jesus
    (4.0, K-DH, 4.5, 4.5)

I prefer B but we don't know Jesus' price yet.

Prefer B too, but think there are better options rather than Hendo, Perisic & Maddison.

          In the 4.5GKs I like Sanchez/Raya (though fear Brentford's '2nd season syndrone')
Perisic I just don't think is going to get the minutes/returns to make him worthwhile (see Neale's piece on Conte and rotating WBs) - I'd actually bank a million on Perisic and get either Tomiyasu/White or Fofana/Pereira (all at 4.5m)
Then I'd either turn Maddison into an 8/9 - like Kulu/Mount/Mahrez/Foden or... share it across your 3rd and 4th MIDs allowing a better bench option than KDH.

This all sounds very critical though - I do like the team. Madds is obvs a great pick. And maybe Perisic will prove me wrong!

Leicester fans seem to think that Justin is the nailed WB/FB and the opposing flank is more up for grabs at this point; they also seem to assume Castagne will not be with them when the season starts; this seemingly leaves them with Pereira, but as he is hopeless with defending, the consensus seems to be that Castagne will need to be replaced with a proper defensive option.

              Good Leicester intel.
I do think there's value to be had in Leicester's defence (though it's a watch and see for me to begin with).
They posted such poor numbers last season, but also struggled with so many injuries.
I expect a far more improved season ahead.

The worst part of heavy defensive options are when the big five play each other. (Sorry ManU) Seems OK though early on.

Yeah when Liverpool, City and Chelsea play eachother a 1-1 draw would be a terrible result for my FPL team.

      GW11 the big clash right?
Gives us time to see how it's settling and if we want to navigate around it.

For me, it's why Trent/Robbo/Cancelo are better than VVD/Dias/Laporte as in those H2H clashes, they are more likely to still get attacking returns even if the team concede.

And yeah, we defo have a big-5 now.

Will probably have only a moderately big at the back setup myself (4, definitely not 5), and maybe deadend GW7 selling Spurs defender & WC GW8. Just have 1 City/Pool defender (each) GW11.

    Haaland 4.5 4.5

Diaz and Saka alternatives for those 8.0 places, and Neto for 6.0…
