The Sorare Academy returns again after a turbulent Fourth of July weekend that featured an eight-goal thriller in DC, a match-winning golazo in Vancouver and several perfect 100 scores from Jamiro Monteiro, Dylan Nealis and Andre Blake.

Our guest writer Frip will take us through the fixtures for this coming weekend. You can find him on Twitter posting regular MLS injury, transfer, and other news here.

Once you’ve read his tips below you can enter your own team for free ahead of the Friday deadline at 11am BST.

Last gameweek

A total of 15 managers secured a prize in a high-scoring Gameweek last week. Top of the leaderboard was manager Heekaa with this team:

Picking two players to hit 100 points is impressive, especially when one of them is a goalkeeper!

This Gameweek

This weekend is rivalry week. “El Tráfico” in Los Angeles, the Rocky Mountain Cup between Salt Lake and Colorado, a Cascadia Cup match-up between Portland and Seattle, and more.

El Tráfico – LAFC vs LA Galaxy

The LA derby is the marquee match-up of the weekend. This rivalry has produced some of the most memorable moments in MLS, from Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s debut brace to an eight-goal play-off showdown, this is a match that you won’t want to miss! What better way to get excited for this one than to add some skin into the game with your Sorare Academy picks?

LAFC go into this weekend as favourites and offer great options on both sides of the ball. Offensively, Carlos Vela is still their key figure and this is his stage to shine. In the midfield, Jose Cifuentes is a solid addition as he’s scored well in the All-Around category and has the goal/assist threat needed to reach the higher scores. Diego Palacios is my defensive pick from LAFC as he was specifically rested for this match because he is one yellow card away from a suspension. He’s a defender that can grab points on both sides of the ball.

Dejan Joveljic and Efrain Alvarez are the players I’d want to back from the other side of LA. History has shown that this match-up is full of goals and these two are both key to the Galaxy offence.

I-5 Derby | DC United at Philadelphia Union

Philadelphia still has one of the best defences in the league and they are hosting DC United in the I-5 derby this weekend. Goalkeeper Andre Blake is coming off a 100-point performance with a penalty save against Columbus last weekend.

DC United currently sit bottom of the MLS form table, having lost four of their last five. This is a solid opportunity on both ends of the pitch for Kai Wagner. He has been quiet recently and this match-up is perfect for him to get back on the scoresheet again.

New York Red Bulls at FC Cincinnati

This is the first non-rivalry game to target this weekend and it’s a good one for Cincinnati. Luciano Acosta has been nothing short of on fire in recent weeks. He’s racked up five assists and a goal in his last five games. A home game against the Red Bulls is very enticing and perhaps good enough to double up on Cincy’s offence with Brenner. The Brazilian has also found his form with five goals in as many games recently.

San Jose Earthquakes at Toronto FC

There’s no rivalry here either, however, this game will still be one to remember as record signing Lorenzo Insigne is set to debut. The Italian has been in Toronto and training with the team for the past weeks and should be ready to go on Saturday. He’s still not 100% nailed to start just yet, so Jesus Jimenez might be a safer selection at forward. Carlos Salcedo is your best bet if you want to back the Toronto defence this weekend.

San Jose’s Jamiro Monteiro did put up a clean 100 last weekend and his 69 average is noteworthy, even if he’s on the road here. Toronto’s defence is still quite leaky, as they are tied for the sixth-most goals allowed over the last six matches.

Columbus Crew at Chicago Fire

We’ve covered a lot of offensive firepower so far and this match-up is my defensive pick of the week. Chicago’s young goalkeeper Gabriel Slonina might be close to moving to Europe, but until anything is announced he still has a solid defence in front of him for MLS play.

The Columbus offence has been anaemic at best over the last five games where they only scored five goals. This is a prime clean sheet opportunity for Slonina and defender Rafael Czichos

Over to you!

Perhaps you fancy some of the other MLS high-flyers, like Orlando’s Mauricio Pereyra, who has the highest last-five average of any player in the league right now with 73 points per game, or someone else altogether?

Whoever you choose, make sure you submit your team before Friday’s 11am deadline – and good luck!

I can see them both getting decent goal-involvement, considering the price and fixtures. ESR should see more minutes with the 5-sub rule, even if he's mainly benched to for the start of each game. With Jesus coming in to boost the press, ESR could continue or improve his scoring record against tired legs. He's got the required knack and finishing ability.

If one of them is not seeing enough action, I can sell, knowing that I already have already got the points from owning the correct one.

I would like to do the same thing with Jesus and Nketiah is I could have 4 Arsenal players.

Martinelli and ESR double not making much sense based on the evidence last season. Basically they are rotated one of them is usually subbed for another. I think Martinelli os more nailed on

It's true that I pretty much guarantee myself to lose out on 1-2 appearance points, and 1-2 potential clean sheet points every gameweek. This fact alone might be my reason to re-evaluate and chicken out of the double. However, I think they are both very cheap (only 1.5m more than the minimum spend compared to 3.5m for Saka, for example), while both having a reasonable chance of matching the goal-involvement levels of more expensive mids who could also suffer from rotation with the 5-sub rule.

Yes but if you watched second half of the season, ESR was unfortunately in pecking order and Arteta seem to be preferring Martinelli instead. I dont really understand your rationale where you already aware ESR will probably would probably bring you a point or ruin your unintentional benchwonkery. There are number of better picks at that price whom are nailed on.

A lot of players can bring you just 1-3 points in any given week. However, the bulk of the points I'm looking for is in goal-involvement. Neto could start 50% more games than ESR, but still be involved in 50% fewer goals, for example.

I think 5 subs will also reduce the value of more expensive options who have been priced highly, in part, due to their perceived nailedness last season, while increasing the value of players like ESR, who have proved lower due to their lack of nailedness, as their minutes will increase.

Not to mention the risk of investing heavy at the back.why not to at least downgrade Robbo and upgrade ESR who is not nailed?

            1. Deulofail
              • 10 Years

No-one is nailed if you think in terms of minutes rather than starts. We focus too much on starts imo, which become a little less important with 5 subs.

I think the 'basket' needs to be defined here. I think it's probably an arbitrary category that means nothing for FPL points acquisition. If we only care about FPL points, Robbo is either better than Cancelo or he is not. It doesn't depend on TAA.

Or another way to think about it, if Liverpool are in good form, both my defenders are too. If they are not, both my defenders are not. 'Basket' thinking is a defensive play-style that biases towards the likelihood of the 'poor form' side of things, where there should not be a bias either way (because the likelihood is the likelihood, regardless).

              Not sure if making sense.

So the “risky” point is more of an emotional sense than a mathematical one I think.

Let’s say we think Trent, Robbo and Cancelo all have the same expected returns, and also the same “risk” of over or underperforming then mathematically you arguably get a small diversification effect with Cancelo which means you are less likely to significantly over or underperform the expected result - but as OP says this works in both directions.

So in simple terms the double up “feels” riskier as if Liverpool play first and blank you feel you have another shot at it, but technically the difference isn’t that notable and works in both directions anyway.

Separately I don’t understand the ESR and Martinelli argument st all.

        1. Deulofail
          • 10 Years
          4 years, 7 days ago

Right so the risk thing isn't a thing 😀
(Not sure what the diversification effect is, but if it's the same in both directions, then it's irrelevant)
So if you expect more points from Robertson than Cancelo, you should buy Robertson. The only reason to consider the fact you have Trent is that you're taking another Liverpool slot - not because it's more risky (because it isn't). I would also argue it's more risky to go with a player you think will get fewer points.

I would likely go for Martinelli regardless of whether I have ESR. So the argument is really just for ESR. I'm not sure what's so confusing. People will avoid him due to the expectation that he won't play/score enough to justify his price, and that's what I'm betting against, because I think he will/might. The cost of this bet is pretty low.

I think the same for Martinelli, but if I'm wrong about him, then at least I'll have an ESR who'll probably be inflating massively in value.

So the risk thing isn’t completely irrelevant. The diversification effect is that Trent and Robbos are correlated (ie move in line with each other) whereas Trent and Cancelo don’t. Therefore the extreme results either side are less likely - ie it’s less like that you blank every game or return every game if you have Trent and Cancelo.

But I agree fundamentally if you think Robbo on average scores more than Cancelo, that’s more important than the above.

The Martinelli / ESR thing is completely different. It seems fairly common opinion that most games will only start with one of them so you can’t be right about both of them. Essentially you are guaranteeing yourself that at least one of your two bets fail.

You can’t isolate the players because ESR is less likely to play directly as a result of Martinelli playing and vice versa.

Completely different to Trent and Robbo where they don’t impact each other’s likelihood of playing.

      Does look quite good.

My concern with 'threemium' teams is the fact that good defenders have to be ignored e.g. James, Chilwelll, Cash, Perisic etc as well as midfield options such as Saka, Kulu, Mount, Bowen etc.

The question is will the premiums be able to cover the gap between your rivals when they might have the 'better' options listed above.
Basically, will Kane Salah and Haaland collectively outscore a 5-3-2 formation with 5 strong attacking defenders, 3 'good value' 8.0m mids and a Haaland Jesus front two combo?

I think it will be a close one.

I really don't like the idea of Gw 1 BB. Last season was little difficult for some with it, but it was only last season. BB is also great way to get kind of extra WC. It's more than fun to sell all the "deadwood" for players that have dgw and good fixtures after that. -16 can be taken and almost/about similar immediate net win is possible (or maybe I'we been just lucky twice). WC gw 2 for example is far too early to change team totally and is far too likely to fail badly. There is simply not enough information so early to jump on right bandwagons. Also having no WC when there is big fixture change and others can use it is simply huge disadvantage.

unlikely i'll do it again this year but i've had mixed results with a gw1 BB, got about 30 extra pts a few years ago, but only 11pts last year, looking at the fixtures for this year it can work with some cheap to mid priced assets from Leicester, Newcastle & Villa, i normally use WC early too so no issue personally doing that but this year i'm looking to save it until a bit later

What we thinking of Fodens' position moving forward?

Grealish definitely feels most natural off the left flank, so maybe we'll see Foden on the right wing more like in his breakthrough year? Or perhaps deeper into the midfield?

Seems City are out to get a natural RW, namely Gnabry atm, and if that goes through then all seems to point to Foden dropping back into the midfield and uptop rotating with Grealish and possibly still Haaland which would make him a near non-asset for £8.0 imo.
Ofcourse all depends on/if rumoured transfers go through, just a bit of speculation for fun.

    City depth:
    LW: Foden, Grealish, Sterling*
CF: Haaland, Foden, KDB, Grealish, Delap*
    RW: Mahrez, Gnabry (?), Palmer

Sam Lee (City reporter for The Athletic) says Foden wants to play on the right. He's also said that they're not in the market for a replacement for Jesus or Sterling, their only targets are the players they've signed so far and Cucurella

Best “threemium” team that I have come up with -

    Sanchez
    TAA - James - Walker - Tomiyasu
    Salah - Son - Neto - Gordon
    Haaland - Jesus

    Steele - Andreas - Greenwood - Vestegaard

    Thoughts? 🙂

surely Gordon isn't a thing, but not bad! just think how good this team could be if you downgraded Haaland to a 4.5 and beefed the kak up

      Not too bad tbh.
Think there are better options at 5.0 than Walker but I can see why you've put him in there for CS cover.
Also, there are so many good 8.0 midfielers this year!
Do you really need three big hitters? Can only captain one of them every week.

Depends, if you have Salah then i would say Kulu. If you have Son then I would say Diaz. If you have neither Son or Salah then I would say you could do with both really.

Posted a similar draft earlier, have since made some tweaks so please RMT:

    Meslier
    James | Cash | Perisic | Trent | Cancelo
    Salah | Coutinho | Kulu
    Jesus | Haaland

    Raya | Martinelli | Andreas | Greenwood

    My thoughts:
Should I downgrade Martinelli to a 4.5m mid? If so then I can upgrade Coutinho to Saka and upgrade Meslier/Raya to Mendy or Ramsdale?

Thoughts on Jacob Ramsey at 5.5? Scored some goals last season and has 4 decent fixtures to start.

Still worth consideration yeah, any lower than 5.5 and he'd be a must have

    2. @persecuted_by_mods
      4 years, 7 days ago

See him more as a good real life player than fpl option, at 5.5 he's a no go unless he suddenly starts playing further forward

    2. @persecuted_by_mods
      4 years, 7 days ago

Barnes- flatters to deceive most seasons, but if you time the purple patch you're laughing

Ramsey- good player in real life, not sure how well that translates to fpl now he's 5.5 can't see that many attacking returns

Martinelli - likely to start the season on the left for arsenal, talent is there needs to start getting consistent attacking returns

Bruno G- don't know too much about him tbh

  21. sirmorbach

One more, if I may: is Martinelli likely to start for Arsenal in most games?

    1. @persecuted_by_mods
      4 years, 7 days ago

He's likely to start the season on the left but will see reduced minutes because of ESR and Viera, and could be replaced by them for starts too if his form isn't up to scratch

Kinda like 1 upfront and invest in mids but if the front man does not start I am up the creek. Team above. Took out Barnes for Bruno G (for 2 weeks) so holding 1 mil in bank...all the best to you!

I fancy Kane to start the season well. A lot of talk of city changing how they play to accommodate Haaland, just don’t see it, think it will be a case of Haaland adapting to suit city, which could take a few games and there is no pressure for them to force it.
