Gabriel Jesus has been priced up as an £8.0m forward by Fantasy Premier League (FPL) after his move to Arsenal from Manchester City.

He’s proving to be a popular initial selection, too, sitting in around 44% of embryonic FPL squads at the time of writing – although ‘auto-picks’ will account for some of that total.

Reunited with Mikel Arteta, who spent over three years as Pep Guardiola’s assistant, the Brazil international only twice reached four consecutive starts throughout the last two seasons.

With the Gunners recently letting Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette go, Jesus has the chance to become a reliable FPL asset for the first time really in his Premier League career.

We assess the new Arsenal number nine in our Moving Target report.

GABRIEL JESUS: FPL HISTORY

Gabriel Jesus arrived in Manchester aged 19, having led the line for Palmeiras’ first national championship title since 1994. His impressive first half-season brought seven goals and four assists from just ten appearances.

SeasonTeamStarts (sub)Mins playedGoalsAssistsFPL Points
2021/22Manchester City21 (7)187188120
2020/21Manchester City22 (7)205695115
2019/20Manchester City21 (13)2018148146
2018/19Manchester City8 (21)10177379
2017/18Manchester City19 (10)1660137126
2016/17Manchester City8 (2)6517467

And Jesus never really let Guardiola down. His 9,273 league minutes equates to 103 full games, with 93 goal involvements arriving at a rate of one per 99.7 minutes.

Yet two big problems have plagued his five-and-a-half years at the Etihad Stadium – Pep Roulette and sporadic stints playing on the wing.

The former meant Jesus never played more than 60% of minutes in a season and therefore rarely existed on the radar of most FPL managers.

The arrivals of Erling Haaland and promising Argentine Julian Alvarez was the final nail in the coffin for his time in Manchester.

Above: Starting positions, according to Transfermarkt

Despite City not replacing the departed Sergio Aguero and Ferran Torres, last season saw Gabriel Jesus used less often as a forward. He has spoken publicly about being fine with this.

“I feel comfortable out wide. I didn’t start to play as a winger just this season. I have played with the national team there for two years. I started to play in the first team of Palmeiras as a winger and I played sometimes when I arrived here as a winger as well. So I think I’m okay there.” – Gabriel Jesus

Furthermore, following a poor 2018 World Cup where he failed to score from five Brazil starts up front, Jesus seemed to confess to coach Tite that cutting inside from the flanks is his preference.

“I spoke with the Brazil coach not that long ago and he said that after the World Cup he called over Gabriel Jesus and asked him, ‘Where do you want to play?’ Jesus said ‘I don’t mind’ but the coach said, ‘Obviously you mind, you obviously have a preference, what is your preference?’ And, somewhat sheepishly, Jesus said he’d rather play out wide. This is important. [Mikel] Arteta knows him from Man City but that’s a while ago and things change.” – South American football expert Tim Vickery

Couts is in my team at the moment.

He’s one of those players who could genuinely haul early with those first few fixtures, and it’s easy to move on from him from GW5 if you need to.

A is a more solid bet, both are more nailed.

I’d wait and see on Haaland, he may be eased in and need time to adjust.

So many posts saying players will be great options because they are looking to make their countries World Cup squads, as if they don’t usually try their hardest 😆

Well probably true, same as when they signing a new contract, amazing until they sign on the dotted line, and then dog poop. Take Barnes for example, was it last season, useless soon as contract is signed.

Rover, I know you're an older guy and maybe a bit more cynical. But the youth of today are built different, if they aren't sold on an idea they won't give 100%. You don't get that many players who are willing to give everything for their club anymore.

Why would they have incentives in their contracts if incentives didn't incentivize? I'm sure there are players who up their game, whether consciously or otherwise, due to the conscious knowledge that they will be rewarded later, financially, or by recognition from their national coaches.

It's also a self-fulfilling prophecy, potentially. If everyone believes in the narrative that they are all competing for their national squads, and visualizing the increased prestige that the narrative is bringing, then they could up their game by osmosis like a placebo.

They could even be 'trying their hardest' during a normal season, but now their 'hardest' possible effort could be a level higher as a result of the incentive. Seems like a psychological possibility to me!

I'm talking in word salad, but I still believe it!

Agree. Maybe an extra 10k per goal won't make the difference, but playing for your country is just different

Decided to stay away from Chelsea defence due to new players, and think the 4.5 options are strong
    How’s this look for GW1?
GW2 will be Kulu to either Mahrez or Dias depending on first game showing…

    Henderson
    Trent Cancelo Jonny Castagne
    Salah Kulusevski Maddison Neto
    Haaland Jesus

    Raya Tomiyasu Andreas Greenwood

I think your minimising your potential if you go Diaz and Salah.

Choose one or t’other but not both. Kulu feels a better pick to me.

What you gonna do if Kulu bags a hattrick in first game? You dropping him?
Never makes sense to plan a transfer for GW2. IMO i think Mahrez and Diaz offer better long term prospects than Kulu and Maddison

If he nails the starting gig then Sam Johnstone at Palace is another one who could be absolute fantasy gold at £4.5m, especially by 1st WC time (GW 7 on).

3mium will almost guarrantee you a wild card early. There are two glaringly large problems. Bench - what if Haaland doesn’t play in a match, do you have cover with your two strikers otherwise you have 10 men that week. Problem two is there are a bunch of 8m midfielders, you will have to remove a premium to bring one in. Lastly, premiums don’t rise or fall rapidly as they are usually highly owned so your slowing your chance to build value in the opening weeks.

I don't necessarily agree with that. I'm going 2 up top myself, but one-up wouldn't faze me.
So if Haaland misses a game, your 4.5 forward steps up for zero points.
To avoid that you need a 6.0m starting forward, who will probably get you 2 points. But using that 1.5m to improve a 4.5 defender to a 6m defender is far more likely to get you a better score in the long-term.

Ok linked to my previous post where I ranted no-one is a bargain 😀 Here's my GW1 BB team, first draft.
Money is so tight, they all need to start! Must have Salah or Haaland for cap, I choose Haaland, I can see him going mad on his debut.

Feel free to rip it apart, or offer some advice, don't particularly like Ramsey, but don't particularly like Neto either, and worried about Smith-Rowe starting.

    Meslier
    Robbo - TAA - Cancelo - James
    Ramsey - Coutinho - Barnes - ASM
    Wilson - (H)aaland

    Dubravka, Jesus, Smith-Roew, Tomiyasu

Would a BB tempt you? Got to WC though in the first 3 weeks or so normally.

Dubravka won’t play, Barnes a bit of a punt, ESR and Ramsey not guaranteed a start. Too thinly spread for a BB

If focussing on GW1 I’d consider sacfricing Cancelo down to Trippier (you need to replace Dubravka anyway so no issues with a 3rd Newcastle).

This gives you £2m for ESR to Saka.

His goal scoring record has gone backwards over the last couple of years. And his involvement at city has reduced, hardly suggests an improvement.

The fact city are prepared to sell him to a main rival says it all.

This, he only scored a decent amount because of the insane amount of chances city create. He’s one of those players who when they go through one on one you expect them to miss.

His finishing and composure has improved. That's eye test only from me, you can throw whatever stats you like at me but I know what I see and I back my instinct. I think he will thrive away from City. There was a lot of negative press created by Liverpool fans when he went there, he suffered from it there is no doubt. He's grown as a player and a man under Pep, i think he will kick on in a new team when he has the chance to be the main man

He's selling him because he isn't a pep player. He is direct and takes risks. Pep likes short passes and consistency.

Just because he doesn't suit peps team doesn't mean he isn't a great player.

Man City have spent a lot they need to recoup some funds.

Yeah but he scores goals for England and he did for Liverpool too.

He's scored goals for City in Champions League too. Surely teams of that quality know how to defend against someone who only has pace.

13g 7a last season, in only 2121 minutes. You think that's a liability to Chelsea's front line? On his day he causes havoc, stretches play and creates opportunity, to say nothing of his own tally. £10m? I mean each to their own and everything but people being a bit harsh like.

He plays like Ashley Young used to as a winger honestly. Very average player who you'll never be confident in to score when he's through 1 on 1. Very good at drawing fouls and scoring tap ins though.

You’ll need 2 forwards. You’ll prob need to downgrade 1 mid and you’ve too much money in defence, your 5th def should be cheap. You can use this money to upgrade elsewhere

With the 5 sub rule meaning facing the prospect of wingbacks getting subbed early or rotated more often, I kind of think maybe centre halves should be the go to safer picks.
It's hard though, going for Van Dijk over Robbo, or Dias over Cancelo. So less glamorous.

    1. TheTinman
      • 10 Years

But managers are still hard for the 60min rule.

If they sub earlier it means they got their first 11 wrong and most are too egotistical to admit that.

The clean sheets which shouldn't have been will balance out the attacking returns missed

Don't think Robbo or Cancelo will get rotated nearly enough as much as people expect. Not like Klopp/Pep exhausted their subs every game even with the 3 change system.

Chelsea/Spurs wingbacks on the other hand - absolutely which is why I'm avoiding Perisic for now

I wish he came in at 5.5 - at 6m Reece James or Chilwell is more attractive so rather invest funds there. Nott Forest have lost their star loan players and so might be worth a wait and watch approach at the beginning. Unfortunately 5 premium defenders makes more sense to start the season, but you never know...

With the five subs rule I'd love to see a supersub feature added to the game, triple points for a player on your bench if they actually come on as a sub, would spice things up a bit

    1. TheTinman
      • 10 Years
      4 years, 12 days ago

So you select one player to be your super sub that week. They score double points but only if they come off the bench. If they start you get zero?

Yeah, they'd have to be on your bench and come on a sub, if they started and were autosubbed in then they'd still get their usual points.

That could easily be abused. Always start a player that u know will never start so the otber player is always autosubbed in. Then the autosubbed player on your bench will get triple points everytime they come on as a sub.

        • Fantasy Football Scout Member

I'm on about if they come as a sub in the actual match, not come off your fpl bench. So you have your starting xi as usual and can get points from an additional player on your fpl bench if youve selected them as a supersub and they do actually feature in the match as a substitute.

    5. Runnerboy31

So the six nations feature - works better there when starting lineups were already known so you knew who the subs were. Also in six nations there were many more opportunities for points late on.

Think it’s a bit more wasted in fpl - most subs will get 1 point.

Also - it makes no difference if they are on your bench, we would all just play a non playing fodder in our starting lineup.

      1. Ivan Toney Soprano
        • Fantasy Football Scout Member

There were a lot of players last year you could predict would make an appearance as a sub, ESR for instance, played a lot as a sub and scored a lot off the bench. There would be a risk to it because they might end up starting, man city mids eg you wouldn't want them on your bench necessarily in case they started so would mean some of those below 6m players have a lot more merit.

Whats your logic with your last point? That if they came on as a sub x3 points and if they didnt youd still get their points anyway? If so I guess the rule would be supersub wouldnt be eligible for autosub

Idk bad idea I guess haha goodnight

I’m saying super sub works in rugby because all of your squad plays and you get half points for your bench players and there’s no autosub.

Unless you move to this it’s pointless because you would just put a non player in your starting lineup and put your best player on the bench knowing they will get autosubbed on and if they start irl nothing changes and if they happen to cameo then you probably only get 3 points anyway.

The thoughts I've had so far:

    - I'd love to have all three of Salah, Son and Haaland, but I don't think it's feasible to get a really strong squad elsewhere.
    - All three have good early fixtures, but Son having Chelsea away in GW2 makes me feel as if he's the least likely to end up with the most points early on, and the least likely to end up as a panic bandwagon.
    - After having a disastrous start a couple of seasons ago, and a decent one last season, I think I prefer starting more templately, going with the pack and steadily aiming to get ahead, rather than go bold and aim for a big leap but potentially end up far behind early on.

So Salah + Haaland it is

The upside with going for this pair is that you know exactly what you're getting, and what you're getting is fantastic. Going for a new signing is always a gamble, but then again Haaland is a different level

I agree, you know Son and Salah are going to score big. I suspect Haaland will too but it's only a "suspect" until he actually does it. Bundesliga isn't the same level, although City are better than Dortmund.

Can someone example to me why Mendy is getting so much love? He was 7th for points per match and only got 3 bonus points all season, and was well outside the top 10 for saves at almost bang on 2 per match. So he’s pretty capped at 6 or 7 points in a clean sheet match and 2 or 3 in other matches.

He’s just cheaper than everyone thought he would be. 5m for a top 4 keeper’s pretty decent.

*top 5 keeper this year. Chelsea will struggle

But again he doesn’t actually really score points … real life points don’t matter

But he doesn’t score points as I mentioned above - they finished 3 last season and he was only the 7th best keeper for fpl points. Raya, Sa, Ramsdale all outscored him last year with better defensive fixtures.

He won't be crap, and when it gets to wildcard time, you can work out which 4.5 keeper is the one worth having for this season

    Sancho or Coutinho?

Coutinho, unless Sancho gets a run in pre-season and looks decent.

I know I’ll change my mind a million times before deadline but I’m currently settled on this structure:

    Raya // Balcombe
    Trent Cancelo _____ _____ // Tomiyasu
Salah Saka Coutinho Neto // Murphy
    Haaland _____ // Taylor

How to fill in those blanks?

    A: Robertson, Chilwell, Undav
    B: Robertson, Jonny, Toney
    C: Chilwell, Jonny, Jesus

Initially wanted Son as well as Salah and Haaland but just can't make it work with all three + the premium back line options.

Have Kulusevski in the current draft but a bit uncertain, do people think his minutes will he affected badly by the Richarlison signing or is he still a good pick even with the new boy coming in?

Not badly. Richarlison isn’t really a right winger. And he’s not as good as kulusevski.

I'm growing to the idea Kulu can't match Son or Kane but Foden or Grealish could match Haaland.

Friendlies are going to be important for gathering Intel this year

Timely article. My first quick RMT of the season:

    Ederson (Forster)
    TAA Robertson Cancelo Chilwell Mings
    Salah(c) Bowen Kulusevski Rodri (Andreas)
    Jesus Johnson (Greenwood)

There should be one regular starter to bench each week excluding the (fodder)

Don’t like it. Rodri is unnecessary and blocks an easy move to Haaland. And there are much better options than mings in the 4.5m bracket.

Fair enough - the structure will prevent me getting a Haaland/Kane without a WC in all likelihood.

    Mendy
    Trent, Robbo, Laporte, Chilwell, XXX
    Salah, Foden, XXX
    XXX, Jesus
    Fodders
    A - Trippier, Neto, Kane
    B - Tomiyasu, Martinelli, Kane
C - Tomiyasu, Neto, Fodder (Son in)

Think this is the most well-rounded draft I've come up with... Also like Rashy over Neto who seems a bit punty:

    Ramsdale
    TAA, Cancelo, James, Cash, Trip
    (S)alah, Rashy, Diaz
    Haaland, Jesus

    (fodder)

    0ITB

Never gone 5 at the back before at the start of the season but feel like it could pay off, especially with the extra world cup WC

Have I nailed it here? If not why?

    Rays
    Trent/James/Laporte/tomiyasu/dunk
    Sarah/Diaz/Neto/martinelli/Gordon
    Haaland/Jesus/undav

    Thanks everyone 🙂

Not sure why Neto is so hot.
Alos, maybe look to save a bit on your bench to upgrade the first 11.

      Gordon/Dunk/Undav
