The ‘Sleeper’ series returns to the Fantasy Football Scout pages this summer.

In these articles, we assess the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) players who failed to live up to former glories last season.

First up, Callum Wilson (£7.5m).

With Eddie Howe an initial success in the Newcastle United hotseat and the Saudi money being splurged on more acquisitions, we assess whether Wilson can push his way back into our thoughts as an FPL asset.

All the stats for this piece are taken from our Premium Members Area, where you can get a whole heap of benefits for just £2.49 a month.

2021/22: FPL RECORD AND STATS

Kane and Wilson enter FPL differential conversation ahead of Gameweek 9 3
  • Starts: 16
  • Substitute appearances: 2
  • Goals: 8
  • Assists: 0
  • FPL points: 75 (4.2 per match)

Wilson played a part in less than half of Newcastle United’s fixtures in 2021/22 and his injury record will be a recurring topic throughout this article.

When he did make it onto the pitch, he delivered: he found the back of the net on eight occasions in just 16 starts, delivering 0.52 goals per 90 minutes – an average beaten by just two first-choice FPL forwards, Cristiano Ronaldo (£10.5m) and Jamie Vardy (£9.5m), both of whom cost considerably more.

The more expensive Vardy, Ronaldo and Harry Kane (£11.5m) were among the few players in Wilson’s Fantasy position who averaged more points per start, too:

 1

The underlying stats are less impressive, however.

A total of 28 other FPL forwards shot with more regularity than Wilson, while he languished 22nd for expected goal involvement (xGI):

Rank v other FPL forwards (minimum 10 apps)
Minutes per shot29th
Minutes per shot in the box24th
Minutes per shot on target18th
Minutes per penalty box touch19th
Minutes per chance created43rd
Minuters per expected goal (xG)14th
Minutes per expected goal involvement (xGI)22nd

Even the successful change of manager didn’t boost his numbers too much (his minutes-per-chance average, for example, was 39.2 under Steve Bruce and 40.3 under Howe), although we’re looking at small sample sizes in both cases.

As usual, he had to rely on his clinical streak in front of goal: only Vardy (27.8%) had a better shots-to-goal ratio than Wilson (22.9%) among first-choice forwards in 2021/22.

FPL PREVIOUS

Making the most of what few chances fall his way has been something Wilson has made a habit of.

As a general rule of thumb, a goal conversion around 20% or above is quite clinical – something Wilson has achieved in five of his last seven seasons, if we take the liberty to include 2016/17:

SeasonShot-to-goal conversion rate
2021/2222.9%
2020/2124.5%
2019/2014.5%
2018/1921.5%
2017/1815.1%
2016/1719.4%
2015/1629.4%

His record at Newcastle overall is pretty elite, with 20 goals, six assists and 204 FPL points arriving in 39 starts. String that record together over the course of one campaign (minus the 39th game!) and you’re into ‘Team of the Season’ territory, although ever-present status has been a pipe dream when it comes to Wilson.

The former Cherries hitman was similarly third among forwards for points per match (see below) in his debut Newcastle season in 2020/21 but again missed a third of the campaign through injury:

 1

2022/23: THE FPL PROSPECTS

Is Callum Wilson the best FPL forward under £8.0m? 2

Whatever Wilson has acccomplished as an FPL forward in the past has generally been for a side at the wrong end of the table: in his seven seasons as a Premier League player, six of them were for a bottom-half club.

So there’s a little bit of intrigue as to what the former Bournemouth striker could achieve with better service and in a team targeting something greater than top-flight survival, something that will surely be the case in 2022/23 should Newcastle’s summer spending continue.

The Magpies’ goal threat indeed improved after they made their series of January acquisitions, with their xG per match rising from 1.0 to 1.4.

Matt Targett (£5.0m) was one of the leading chance creators in the division among defenders after the winter window, while we barely got to see Kieran Trippier‘s (£5.0m) undoubted assist potential due to a fractured foot. Ryan Fraser (£5.5m), Wilson’s sparring partner and creator-in-chief at Dean Court, was also excellent from February onwards.

Newcastle could probably still do with a real key pass merchant in midfield, however, a la Christian Eriksen.

While the service and ambition might be on the rise on Tyneside, that still leaves us with Wilson’s off-putting injury record.

His glass hamstrings will simply make him a no-go for some Fantasy managers (he has struggled to shake off the ‘troll’ tag for years) and he is a option who ought not to be bought without an accompanying exit plan.

Still, there are few (maybe no) other mid-price forwards available in FPL who have been as reliable for goals as Wilson when he has made it off the treatment table.

A lot of Fantasy managers pursuing a forward around this price will be plumping for Gabriel Jesus (£8.0m), whose Arsenal side have a very decent opening schedule.

But while the Gunners sink to third-bottom on our Season Ticker for fixture difficulty from Gameweeks 8-15, Newcastle are right at the top.

The Jesus to Wilson switch at this juncture, then, might be worth a thought – if he’s not in the physio room, of course.

I think Harry Wilson looks a great shout for 6.0. The talisman of midfield and Fulham could offer us goals under Silva

Nah, could score and help make Wilson an option but I'd rather punt on Wilson and then switch to another option when it fails

Much prefer Brennan to any of these options actually, but that's superseded by the 6.0 mid bracket, hence Wilson.

Fair enough, some fairly ok options at 6.0 in midfield but not many at all at 6.0-6.5 in fwds so can see your point

Salah is not essential anymore and the FOMO is now the main reason to get him, imho.

The transfers of Jesus & Sterling are game changers when it comes to selecting alternatives to premium players - give them the same minutes as Son, Kane, Salah & KdB then their points tally will be up by a 1/3 this season

That puts Sterling pushing way over 200 points and Jesus as the main man at Arsenal maybe more than 200 points too.

These guys look like a very useful 7 up top … and any combination of two of them should see off Salah & Neto as a combo 🙂 If you don’t like Foden or Bowen there are lots of alternatives from 6.5 to 8.5 too.

    Sterling Diaz Foden Bowen
    Haaland Jesus Johnson

Mainly Haaland with the captaincy depending on fixtures, but with Jesus or Sterling against any of the weaker teams … should cover Salah

Of course he isn't essential he's bloody 13m
I was gonna go without but changed my mind just cos i wanna cap him vs fulham and palace. 38 free trades so we don't need to worry about season totals. I'll keep as long as i think he's the best captain, drop him as soon as he's not.

Unlikely raz will get city attack ppg at chelsea imo but curious to see

FOMO? Are you really implying that none of us are capable of analysing Salah and concluding he's quite good at football, no matter what other people think?

people are scared of not having Salah, the same as every season. You just need to look at how everyone held him for the second half of last season in fear of missing his points even though his form dropped and his returns dropped … I think this season a by far better team can be built around three mids for 23 mill than Salah, Neto and a 4.5 …and that people scared of what they may miss by not having him rather than what they may gain by not having him … imho

You're making 2 what are for me unconnected points. One is to say that a good squad can be built without Salah. That's perfectly legitimate, even if I don't hold to it myself. The other is to patronise those who do include Salah by suggesting we only have him because we're somehow scared rather than we've come to the conclusion that he's the best player in the game - an opinion, but a valid one just like deciding Neto is worth having for 5.5 without being accused of being an idiot (I'm not saying you said that, but we've had a plague of bots over the last few days unable to mention Neto without patronising those who include him). I'm not denying that some people are motivated by FOMO, but to suggest that the primary motivation is insulting.

wow so aggressive … it’s just an opinion on the generality of picks not personally aimed at any single FPL manager

Salah and Neto are joined at the hip because of their price. The alternatives to them in that price range is
Sterling with any of Bowen, Mount, Madds, Foden, Saka, Diaz, Mahrez … the list goes on.

Or even Diaz, Grealish & Mount etc for Salah, Neto & 4.5

I simply can’t see Salah and whomever he is being partnered with outscoring the alternatives available (and other captaincy options are available) so yes I am coming to the conclusion people are dropping Salah in ‘because they always have, his effective ownership & what happens if he hauls’ without necessarily weighing up the comparative points available for his cash … and Neto (read that as the 5.5 mid price point) is a FPL / Twitter herd mentality makeweight position in all of this.

                imho

As I say, your picks and arguments for and are against are perfectly legitimate points of discussion. My sole point is that accusing anyone who chooses differently of FOMO is patronising and insulting. You could show genuine respect for alternative views instead of looking down on others and then excusing yourself with a hollow 'imho'. That is all.

if you find the opinion that people select Salah because they are scared of missing out on his points as a primary decision making reason as insulting or looking down one’s nose … I respectfully suggest that you take some time away from social media …

I'm calling you out for falsely using terms like 'respect' and 'humble' when your posts are anything but. I am one of the 'people' - I and thousands of others choose Salah for positive reasons, 'fear' has nothing to do with my choice. To accuse me of making a decision due to being 'afraid' is patronising and insulting. If you can't see that, I can only pity you. why is the opinion that people fear missing out on Salah’s potential points insulting ? many over the years have said exactly that about not owning him.

I think you are taking something personally that is not actually personal to you - I certainly worry about Salah getting 300 points but I don’t think he will and I think ‘this season’ there are better priced combinations (in fact I think Son, Jesus, Haaland, KdB & Sterling will out score him) but the easiest thing in the world is just to pick him, not risk it and not over think it … many are doing just that, im(honest)o

I'm a bit of a lurker here so when any individual among the hundreds of regular posters begins sticking out then it's a sure sign that he or she is either A) insightful & interesting or B) nuts.

This Andy character seems to think that this place allows him carte blanche to insult, deride and generally belittle people holding views that he deems unworthy. Anyone can get into an 'argument' every now and then, when someone is doing it multiple times a week then that person has issues.

Something needs to be done here, this isn't Twitter.

My opinion FWIW is that a fully rested Salah is a totally different beast to a flogged and knackered one.

I’ll back my feeling he’ll come flying about the traps by having him as captain in GW1 and see how things progress.

The key for me is recognising when he is not at his best and moving then.

yes agreed, Salah should be refreshed and all things being equal I would be putting him straight in my team, but with Haaland, Jesus & Sterling looking great value and Son & KdB likely to match Salah, I am struggling to commit to him.

The 6.5 - 8.5 bracket is very good this year and I have my eye on JWP, Brooks, H Wilson, Zaha etc if necessary as a step down even from the 8.0 - 8.5 players as the season progresses.

It’s fun times in FPL this year and I believe the initial template is going be challenged as we all wake up to this.

    Raya // Balcombe
    Trent Robertson Cancelo Chilwell Tomiyasu

You would definitely go against the grain with 2 big hitters up front. They just don’t seems to get the big scores the last few years. But Haaland starts well and the Kane/ Son combo kicks in it could be good.

I've reverted to a 3mium, with Salah, Haaland and Kane. Definitely goes against the grain.
My thinking is: just much of an upgrade is Kane over Jesus? Answer: Massive.
Is it worth 3.5 million? Answer - Yes, I think Kane is 3.5m better than Jesus, even if he's not often captained.
So he's in - but where do I make the sacrifice to find the money?
Very controversial move - Cancelo to a 4.5 defender (I had 1m itb).

So it came down to Kane+4.5def is better than Jesus + Cancelo.

I don't expect many to agree, but that's my thinking.

You're right - I can do it another way, by downgrading the goalkeeper.

Cancelo + 4.5m keeper will outscore Chilwell + Mendy. I'll do that.

Who knows what will work. But with my team it would take more than a Cancelo downgrade to get me to a 3mium.
Every season is different of course Kane and Haaland could go to 250 but with the points acting against forwards they need a stellar season to achieve it.
I was advocating 5 at the back at least 1 if not 2 season ago. Now that it is becoming template I might actually have the balls to stick with it !!

If Andreas becomes a starter he has BRE GW3 and BHA GW5 both at home. Could also swap Neco to Patterson as Everton have NFO and lee home/away in that time.

Otherwise can always start him, and other than those 2 fixtures, Newcastle have a nice opening 10 weeks

I've got Andreas too, and using him for those 2 GWs seems fine. I am concerned about anyone who gets overexcited about Andeas and intends to start him too often. Yes, he'll likely be a sure-starter, and has offensive potential, but Fulham score so few goals in the PL that I doubt he'll get many scores over 2 points.

    Raya

TAA- Cancelo- James - Tomi - Jonny (or other 4.5s)

    Salah - Díaz - Kulu

    Haaland - Jesus

    4.5 - Andreas - 4.5x2

Don’t like missing on Kane (especially for GW1) but like having 2 8.0s for flexibility.

Two premiums is fine - better, really. My concern with your draft is starting 2 4.5 defenders, or 2 4.5 players every week. There is so much value in upgrading at least one to a 5 or 5.5 defender that I think it would be worth slightly downgrading one starter to improve 2 more.

Def way too weak. That is where the points are. Reguillon not a consistent starter. Vestergaard even less of a starter.
I would not trust Coutinho or Zaha for regular goals/assists. Much better option with an 8mil and 6m mid.

Darwin is untested in PL maybe start with Jesus and bring him in later? I also think his minutes may be managed for a while.
      Coutinho to maybe Diaz and
      Zaha (bad fixtures) to Neto.
The only one if your defenders to keep in Tomiyasu. I would swap out the rest.

Overall, it looks great to me, although I'd be hesitant over Maddison. True Leicester were unlucky with injuries last season, but with Tielemans poised to leave, they look weaker going into the new season, and don't have the best opening fixtures. With that squad I might even triple up with Arsenal and pick Saka just for the first few GWs - or Foden, Mount or some other pick.

I wouldn't go quite that far. He did pass the eye-test for me, as a prematurely-introduced PL-inexperienced player. But he's not as clinical as Mane, it's true. What I would say is he's value at 8m, but as Ser Davos suggests, Robbo, VVD and maybe Alisson are even better value (it goes without saying so is the 0.5m cheaper TAA).

      Foden: Pep

Maddison: fixtures pre-WC1. Same with Kulusevski & Bowen. Liverpool, City, Chelsea and Arsenal fixtures look much kinder for their attackers, on paper. They are all somewhat fixture proof, to be fair, but when it comes to fine margins... Better fixtures win out in my mind

Currently sitting on this until preseason, transfers and injuries cause some changes

    Martinez
    TAA James Cancelo Tierney Perisic
    (C)Salah (VC)Mount Martinelli Diaz
    Haaland

    Balcombe Andreas Greenwood Stansfield

Starting with Martinez for a chance to choose a good 4.5 GK with a good fixture run when Aston Villa's great-but-brief run ends. That's the only locked in transfer, and that's around GWs 3 to 5

With 5 subs and Jesse Marsch's tendency to use them, I think there'll be regular 1-pointers from Greenwood to make up for Haaland's no-shows, but he's there as my second captain until WC1 due to fixtures... Or he's gone much earlier if Pep does his magic to make the no-shows far too regular

Wondering if Perisic can wait for the first wildcard. Most other decisions are based on fixture runs that end around GW10. Hence Diaz and Mount over, say, Kulu and Maddison

Martinelli could be any of the emerging 6.5s (monitoring Sinisterra, Trossard, JWP and Rashford) or even Neto, but I don't know which one yet. Tierney could be Trippier or Digne for the early hauls, but Arsenal options feel better as default due to fixtures. That's a few spots to play around with as options emerge, I think

Or just WC in GW3 😀

I'm more quiet now due to some other obligations, but I still go through the pages for the usual FFS gems. So I'm still here, I guess 🙂

    Good luck, one and all

Why are people so excited about Williams getting his move to Forest like he is the second coming of Guy Demel? Is it because we will finally have a starting defender at 4.0 this season? Surely, with the pricing this season and so so many good 4.5 defenders it is not worth a valuable defender spot?

Still need someone to prop up the bench.

I'd liken him more to Livramento and how he started last season. If he was priced after his move, he'd be 4.5 and there wouldn't be much discussion. So yes, I think there's a bit of overexcitement about his 4.0 price. But Forest are strengthening well at the back, so I'd definitely put him on my prominent watchlist with a view to bringing him on soon, or on my wildcard. So he's a decent option for me, but I'd want to wait and see a bit.

maybe because there's an excitement of having a cheapie defender from promoted side that can surprise many teams in the first 10 GWs, just like what Lundstram, Dallas, Doherty, AWB did in the past ?

I remember all of them able to give several double digit points in the early season

The point I am trying to highlight is the importance of the fifth defender spot vs saving 0.5 with the kind of pricing this year...for our 4 other defenders we refuse to go anywhere else outside even the top 4 defenses...for 4.5 we can get an Ars/Wolves/ other strong defenses and a player that can be start/first sub easily for the first 8 gws..there are so many value players in the game that sacrificing a valuable defender spot for a newly promoted team doesnt make a lot of sense

I wouldn't do it myself - not until his value is proven - but I can see many people are still wedded to 4 at the back (interestingly I've seen no arguments promoting the old 343 yet) and so they want a 4.0 to park on the bench to maybe enable a cheap mid or fwd.

    Rate my team:

    Meslier (Klaesson)
    TAA Cancelo James Peresic (Tomiyasu)
    Salah Diaz Neto Martinelli (Andreas)
    Haaland Jesus (Plange)

Tempted to shift from template with Olise instead of Martinelli...

    Thoughts?

i think this is very template unless you play around with Chilwell and maybe pick Rashford and no Jesus but Wilson ?

Good suggestions. I'm thinking that a Wilson in my first wildcard around gameweek 6 could be the way

      Hitman HD trilogy

My all time favourite, dated mechanics now but too much nostalgia with that series!

    4.5 Keeper:

I'm on Raya at the moment, but I can't help noticing what a superb run of opening fixtures Meslier has. Six of his first seven opening games (Chelsea being the exception) are against fairly flaccid attacks, suggesting he could pick up plenty save points as well as a few clean sheets. If this time Leeds can go into the season without half their defence out injured due to murderball, he could be golden until a wildcard is played.

That's fair enough. I'm considering him, but want to see who comes in at centre back for Chelsea first. He's also highly owned, whereas Meslier has only 1/10th of his ownership at the moment.
