The ‘Sleeper’ series returns to the Fantasy Football Scout pages this summer.

In these articles, we assess the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) players who failed to live up to former glories last season.

First up, Callum Wilson (£7.5m).

With Eddie Howe an initial success in the Newcastle United hotseat and the Saudi money being splurged on more acquisitions, we assess whether Wilson can push his way back into our thoughts as an FPL asset.

All the stats for this piece are taken from our Premium Members Area, where you can get a whole heap of benefits for just £2.49 a month.

2021/22: FPL RECORD AND STATS

Kane and Wilson enter FPL differential conversation ahead of Gameweek 9 3
  • Starts: 16
  • Substitute appearances: 2
  • Goals: 8
  • Assists: 0
  • FPL points: 75 (4.2 per match)

Wilson played a part in less than half of Newcastle United’s fixtures in 2021/22 and his injury record will be a recurring topic throughout this article.

When he did make it onto the pitch, he delivered: he found the back of the net on eight occasions in just 16 starts, delivering 0.52 goals per 90 minutes – an average beaten by just two first-choice FPL forwards, Cristiano Ronaldo (£10.5m) and Jamie Vardy (£9.5m), both of whom cost considerably more.

The more expensive Vardy, Ronaldo and Harry Kane (£11.5m) were among the few players in Wilson’s Fantasy position who averaged more points per start, too:

 1

The underlying stats are less impressive, however.

A total of 28 other FPL forwards shot with more regularity than Wilson, while he languished 22nd for expected goal involvement (xGI):

Rank v other FPL forwards (minimum 10 apps)
Minutes per shot29th
Minutes per shot in the box24th
Minutes per shot on target18th
Minutes per penalty box touch19th
Minutes per chance created43rd
Minuters per expected goal (xG)14th
Minutes per expected goal involvement (xGI)22nd

Even the successful change of manager didn’t boost his numbers too much (his minutes-per-chance average, for example, was 39.2 under Steve Bruce and 40.3 under Howe), although we’re looking at small sample sizes in both cases.

As usual, he had to rely on his clinical streak in front of goal: only Vardy (27.8%) had a better shots-to-goal ratio than Wilson (22.9%) among first-choice forwards in 2021/22.

FPL PREVIOUS

Making the most of what few chances fall his way has been something Wilson has made a habit of.

As a general rule of thumb, a goal conversion around 20% or above is quite clinical – something Wilson has achieved in five of his last seven seasons, if we take the liberty to include 2016/17:

SeasonShot-to-goal conversion rate
2021/2222.9%
2020/2124.5%
2019/2014.5%
2018/1921.5%
2017/1815.1%
2016/1719.4%
2015/1629.4%

His record at Newcastle overall is pretty elite, with 20 goals, six assists and 204 FPL points arriving in 39 starts. String that record together over the course of one campaign (minus the 39th game!) and you’re into ‘Team of the Season’ territory, although ever-present status has been a pipe dream when it comes to Wilson.

The former Cherries hitman was similarly third among forwards for points per match (see below) in his debut Newcastle season in 2020/21 but again missed a third of the campaign through injury:

 1

2022/23: THE FPL PROSPECTS

Is Callum Wilson the best FPL forward under £8.0m? 2

Whatever Wilson has acccomplished as an FPL forward in the past has generally been for a side at the wrong end of the table: in his seven seasons as a Premier League player, six of them were for a bottom-half club.

So there’s a little bit of intrigue as to what the former Bournemouth striker could achieve with better service and in a team targeting something greater than top-flight survival, something that will surely be the case in 2022/23 should Newcastle’s summer spending continue.

The Magpies’ goal threat indeed improved after they made their series of January acquisitions, with their xG per match rising from 1.0 to 1.4.

Matt Targett (£5.0m) was one of the leading chance creators in the division among defenders after the winter window, while we barely got to see Kieran Trippier‘s (£5.0m) undoubted assist potential due to a fractured foot. Ryan Fraser (£5.5m), Wilson’s sparring partner and creator-in-chief at Dean Court, was also excellent from February onwards.

Newcastle could probably still do with a real key pass merchant in midfield, however, a la Christian Eriksen.

While the service and ambition might be on the rise on Tyneside, that still leaves us with Wilson’s off-putting injury record.

His glass hamstrings will simply make him a no-go for some Fantasy managers (he has struggled to shake off the ‘troll’ tag for years) and he is a option who ought not to be bought without an accompanying exit plan.

Still, there are few (maybe no) other mid-price forwards available in FPL who have been as reliable for goals as Wilson when he has made it off the treatment table.

A lot of Fantasy managers pursuing a forward around this price will be plumping for Gabriel Jesus (£8.0m), whose Arsenal side have a very decent opening schedule.

But while the Gunners sink to third-bottom on our Season Ticker for fixture difficulty from Gameweeks 8-15, Newcastle are right at the top.

The Jesus to Wilson switch at this juncture, then, might be worth a thought – if he’s not in the physio room, of course.

      Haaland > Kane
      Diaz > Foden

Appreciate Robbo superior to Chillwell, due to Chelsea’s clean sheet potential being unknown. However, the difference in the above far outweighs that IMO.

Biggest difference is Diaz Vs a potentially-minutes-restricted Foden

Need to see if he makes Tuchel's first team. He's more likely to be a frequent sub, which risks a string of 1-point cameos. Maybe he'll get a late loan out again - then he could be golden.

5-3-2/4-4-2 depending on fixtures. AIN (or Jonny, whoever's most nailed) is just for the early fixtures. My premium defenders are set-n-forgets, the 4.5 chap gets bought and sold.

Haven't settled on a keeper yet - keen on Pope, but I think Trippier has some serious haul potential so I'm probably going with him instead and one of the 4.5 GK. I'm wavering on Chelsea at the moment but an alternative would be James in for Trippier & restore Pope as GK.

Much discussed at this point in pre-season, but when it came to GW1, little implemented. It might be the same again, but I think a combination of subtle price changes and differentials, and a poor record amongst forwards last season make it much more viable this time.

I do think it is potentially dangerous though. Most of these defenders people are going for are wingbacks at Champions League sides. They could be vulnerable to rotation and what's more, most people are going in with super-weak benches. This won't be apparent until about GW5 and it might result in a bunch of panic wildcards.

      1. Bartowski
        • 15 Years

Yeah definitely. Perisic in particular will be saved for his Champions League experience. Same with Cancelo if they buy Cucurella. Similar could be argued for Trent and Robertson now they have such able deputies in Tsimikas and Gomes.

Chelsea are in danger of having no adequate back ups for Chilwell and James, and could over-use them.

I played 5 at the back last season, I think the winner did too. I'm sure many did, just not the Tubers or the loud minority on social media.

Formation really isn't that relevant, it's about picking the best combination of players, no matter where they happen to play.

Think there is some relevance in formation because of adjustability. 442 allows a 1 transfer move to 5 at the back or 3 strikers.

      1. Go to the official FPL transfers page
      2. Filter defenders up to £4.5 and by "Team selected by %" and ignore the £4.0M.

That should give you a handy shortlist to cover the first quarter of the season before you play WC1 - e.g. £4.5M Arsenal defenders are more popular than Crystal Palace's in part because of contrasting fixture difficulty over that period. Tomiyasu is the template pick.

Nottingham Forest £4.5M mids are popular as is Andreas who is expected to join them soon.

With Newcastle's new-found billions. Murphy is very unlikely to see many minutes, so last year's figures mean little. Find players who will play if you need to fall back on your bench.
Andreas is joining Fulham, not Forest.

Nice although Martinelli and ASM are rotation risks. Howe didn't play ASM once he came back from injury earlier in the year and there was talk of him being sold so not sure how much he trusts him. Martinelli has more competition now than last year.

Woah, having recently posted that I hadn't seen a 343 this pre-season, here you are!
It looks good, particularly with a pair of decent 4.5 backups on your bench.
But I still come back to my constant issue with a 343 - do you really think a Forest forward is going to outscore Chilwell, James, Laporte, or Dias?

Yeah the only benefit of the 6m forward over the 6m defender is the added security of the extra playing sub so idk if it’ll be worth it. Hopefully a more enticing 6m forward establishes themselves

No, it’s a trap every year to be sucked in to 3 premiums (certainly 3 ultra premiums at 11m +). All of the top players that get high ranks year in year our go 2 premiums. I’m sure there must be some data to back it up somewhere.

Time to take him out of your drafts!

They probably will get him, but they just re-signed Dembele to play in his position. Typical Barca.
Arsenal are trying with a late bid in addition to Chelsea although again, they seem to have players aplenty, and they don't have CL.

At some point Barca have to stop spunking all the money they don't have, and some of the dozen players who think they're gonna be there next season are going to have to get a reality check.

Okay pal but I don't actually see how that transfer effects anyone outside of the two parties concerned. Barca are generating the funds with a whole host of smaller deals and signing their players to new contracts with lower wages.

Good argument as to why you're not talking about Leeds. Call the other person weird when they just point to some facts as to how the transfer is being paid for.

                1. @persecuted_by_mods
                  4 years, 6 days ago

I didn't realise anyone would need any further explanation over an innocuous comment that transfers are sometimes linked, in terms of going for different targets, teams having money to spend etc, thought it was common sense but old Bartowski doesn't understand it inexplicably

I wasn't even talking about Leeds as I already answered, I was thinking Chelsea moving to a different target, arsenal moving to a different target, Barcelona getting closer to letting FDJ go etc etc

That good enough for ya? Just because you wrongly assumed my comment was about Leeds isn't my fault

No not really. I don't think of of that will be effected by this transfer. Those teams were going for Raphina because a player of that quality coming on to the market at a somewhat reasonable price is very rare. And yes you do have to show your workings if someone disagrees with you in a polite fashion on an open forum. You don't get to just say no pal and then call them weird for simply pointing out why they disagree.

That in itself and your response above is a hell of a lot weirder than anything I said.

You "Not really. Leeds have already spent the money."

Very polite and not weird at all considering you didn't even understand what I was saying. You could have asked who I meant, what transfers I had in mind but you went for the very polite "not really." On something that is opinion no less

Mostly fine. Relies on Jesus never being dropped - which is probably okay.
      I have 2 doubts:
Mings was in really poor form. Gerrard has brought in a good-looking new centre back - probably to play alongside Mings, but if his form doesn't improve, I can see him dropped.
Leicester - poor last season, hopefully with injuries cleared up they’ll be fine, but they're likely to lose Tielemans and haven't strengthened. Couple with their opening fixtures, I'd be starting with another 8m mid and look to move onto Maddison a few GWs in.
I'd also get a different forward fodder in case you later want to triple on Spuds.

I like it alot. I do think Kane seems undervalued this year (especially as with his contract issues he didn't really get going until the second half of last season and still finished as the highest point scoring forward).
I get the excitement with Haaland but Pep rotates so much and might ease him in, he get injured and only played 2/3rds of Dortmund's games last season and has to adapt to both the premier league and city's style of play. Just reminds me of how Lukaku was the finishing piece to Chelsea's team...

Right now I'd be more nervous about not having Salah, although again the Liverpool attack is in the process of changing and Darwin/Diaz may not serve Salah as unselfishly as Mane/Firmino have done in the past...

Now that's tricky. Over the season, I'd definitely say Robbo, but for those first 8 fixtures, Jesus is interesting. Almost a coin-toss for me so I'd probably take the former and use the 0.5m

It's very early days yet, some of us have just got too much time on our hands.
The real kicker is the season kicks off a long time before the transfer window closes, and I foresee some nasty surprises catching us out late on.
