Gameweek 1 of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) is drawing ever nearer and we’re profiling all 20 Premier League teams before the season starts.

The three newest additions to the Premier League, Nottingham Forest, Fulham and Bournemouth, were all profiled in our Promoted series (articles that will be refreshed before the big kick-off), so we begin our team-by-team guides with Aston Villa.

It was a season of steady progress at Villa Park in 2021/22, with Aston Villa’s 14th-place finish not terrible given the loss of talisman and captain Jack Grealish (£7.0m) shortly before the campaign commenced, plus the change in management midway through.

With Steven Gerrard taking the reins in Gameweek 12, all of the team statistics featured here are from that point onwards.

LAST SEASON: ATTACK

From Steven Gerrard’s arrival in Gameweek 12 onwards, Aston Villa ranked seventh overall for goals scored, with 38 in 27 matches.

The all-important underlying attacking statistics, meanwhile, paint the picture of a mid-table Premier League side, which feels okay given that the most expensive FPL option for Villa costs £7.5m.

LAST SEASON: DEFENCE

On inspection, Villa’s defence actually performed very well under Gerrard, suggesting their backline can offer value when the fixtures fall kindly in 2022/23.

The recent additions of defensive midfielder Boubacar Kamara (£5.0m) and centre-half Diego Carlos (£5.0m) could potentially tighten them up further, too.

Gerrard often turned to Douglas Luiz (£5.0m) in the number six role last season, also experimenting with Calum Chambers (£4.5m) and Tim Iroegbunam (£4.5m), but French international Kamara feels like a significant upgrade, which could have a positive impact on Villa’s clean sheet potential.

OPENING FIXTURES

The best mid-price FPL forwards for 2022/23 5

In an appealing opening run, Aston Villa kick start the new season away to newly-promoted Bournemouth, then face Everton and Crystal Palace.

Beyond that, things stiffen up considerably.

In fact, Gerrard’s troops meet four of last season’s top eight between Gameweeks 4 and 7, which includes clashes against West Ham United, Arsenal, champions Manchester City and Leicester City.

However, Gameweek 8 looks like the ideal time to ‘hop on’ their assets, with fixtures against Southampton, Leeds United, Nottingham Forest, Fulham and Brentford either side of Chelsea in Gameweek 11.

Any Brentford fans about on here with an ear to the ground? Does KLP look likely to start ahead of Wissa or is it too early to call? Looks like a really exciting player.

BB1 makes the bench in GW2 a little bit too good annoyingly...

    maybe BB1, FH2, WC3 is the way 😆

get out the blocks fast, it's always easier to protect a high rank I find - it's actually quite hard to lose rank once you're in the top 10k because everyone's team is so similar by that point 😀 in fact I've never fallen out of the top 10k once I'm in it

    1. Nate(U)dog(ie)
      • 5 Years

I still think the GW straight after the WC will likely be the best time (17/18 I think), free transfers for that week and less uncertainty over who will actually generally be starters or not

      1. SADIO SANÉ
        • 11 Years

my main dislike of the bench boost chip stems from having to carry money on the bench for a longer period than ideal - it can ruin your weeks in and around the chip without you even realising it, especially when you consider that forwards are bad value and you need 3 of them to bench boost with

but I guess, like in GW1, in GW18 you would be essentially getting a 'free hit bench boost' which I like the idea of

it's just fixing it afterwards that's the problem - BB1 WC2 is the only way this doesn't happen, but wildcarding in GW2 seems a bit too early and not ideal with that Chelsea-Spurs game - so maybe BB1 FH2 WC3 is the answer 😆

Is it best to have Bailey as first sub — higher ceiling, potential rotation — or a 4.5 that gives you more or less guaranteed two-pointers?

Suspect with 5 subs players will get lots of 20 minute cameos.

Worth having a decent 12th man for rested players & covid
More so as you can get a Bailey or decent 4.5 defender for just .5 extra spend

Personally I don't. Although maybe City will set up differently with Haaland this year. I guess we'll know more after the Charity Shield (or whatever it's called nowadays)

Last year Salah 7.5 per game, KDB 6.4, so not a massive difference, and think KDB will get a lot more assists with Haaland. Think with Diaz and Darwin instead of Mane, may get Pools points shared out differently (emphasis on the May!)

What keepers are people on as I don’t fancy any of the 4.5s so who’s the best 5 or is it best to go to Ederson

I like Pope but don’t see many teams with him which is surprising as I see him getting 150 easy with Newcastle which his average over the last 4 years

If you're putting a team together for the first 6 to 8 games before wildcarding, then you have to look at Ederson with City's fixtures.

A for me, purely on the basis that I don't like any of the £4.5m keepers.

Raya is possibly not guaranteed now that Brentford got the chap from Lazio. Sanchez and Pickford have awful fixtures to start. Leed will concede goals as always.... Etc etc

Great fixtures too, I don't get what people are missing he basically always gets returns when he actually plays, above a 5.5 level imo

Sounds like Neto will help people forget by tomorrow.

I've got both, by the way.

A few going for Dalot which feels like a trap and not even a very good trap.

A trap by definition has to be enticing in the first place to ensnare, Dalot is the equivalent of a sign that says claim your free turd in this dark hole

Been on this structure for a while

    Mendy
    Trent Cancelo James Zinchenko
    Salah Foden Rashford Neto
    Kane Jesus

    Gazzaniga Andreas Williams Greenwood

    Key decisions are

8m mid spot - currently foden but could be Diaz

Premium striker - Kane on fire in pre season, but I think Haaland is going to be massive for city

Yeah I am torn between lots of the 8m mids to be fair, it could easily be mahrez if he starts next week

Diaz and Foden is closer than people think, Diaz is a great player but he he's well overrated on here from an fpl perspective

I’d like triple Liverpool, tempted to use alisson to get it. Zinchenko to Tomiyasu or another 4.5 and then mendy to alisson

Hmmm i think I'd keep Mendy if those defensive signings come in

Neto has a longer shelf life, but Bailey is fine as a very early season punt IMO. Pump and dump.

They're both good options. One is just less boring than the other

    3. @persecuted_by_mods
      4 years, 1 month ago

Bailey is only a trap because he's very injury prone and not yet nailed, but for 3-4 games he can be excellent if he does indeed start

Wolves injuries are piling up there's almost no choice but to play Neto basically upfront

I tend to agree. One or two poor performances and Bailey will be out of the side for Buendia or Ings.

He's been very sharp. The only thing stopping him is the inevitable injury

Of course but so? Before villa signed bailley he was one of my favourite players. A world class all action exciting goal machine that made magic happen when he got on the ball. Then injuries happened, gerrard happened, poor performances, low confidence his career had nosedived. Now gerrard tells me the real leon bailley is back and he's gonna be starting next game and costs 5m. Its the biggest no brainer pick in the whole game for me. Maybe he flops and i trade him out. Maybe he is what i expected a year ago one or the best wide attackers in the world for 5m

Talk about hyperbole. At no point has Leon Bailey EVER been world class or one of the best wide attackers in the world.

World class fair enough probably hyperbolic even though its a subjective term. If you don’t think he was one of the best and most exciting wingers in europe then i assume you don't watch bundesliga. Which is fine but makes it weird that you have an opinion on a player you never watched or followed

I did follow him in the Bundesliga and I agree he was very exciting. He's a talent no doubt but one of the best wide attackers in the world? Quite a stretch to try and put him in the same bracket as Salah and co.

Who scores more points this season?

    A - Salah, Son, Zaha
    B - Haaland, Kane, Nunez

Ah over the whole season I definitely think A. At the start it could be B due to the difference in fixture difficulty for Nunez vs Zaha.

Playing around with a Kane, KDB, Salah team, doesn't look too bad. Most likely won't be my gwk1 team though.

    Sanchez
    TAA Robertson Walker Neco
    Salah KDB Neto Bailey
    Jesus Kane
    Steele Taylor Andreas Tanaganga

How did Rashford look today? Sancho seems to be the man for United under Ten Hag but the extra 1m is tough to find.

    1. @persecuted_by_mods

To me Sancho is not an option, when it comes to fpl goals are king and he's less likely to get them than the others, just my opinion

His numbers in the bundesliga (farmers league I know) at least show he can score them

Farmers league I'm afraid, looks as weak as mikhtaryan and kagawa to me who also scored way more there

In my opinion he was really poor today, a few hearted attempts to run at cash.

Sancho wasn’t really involved at all.

      Martial looked quite sharp.
