Gameweek 1 of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) is drawing ever nearer and we’re profiling all 20 Premier League teams before the season starts.

After weighing up what Arsenal and Aston Villa players have to offer, we continue our team-by-team guides with Brentford.

You can check out our Nottingham Forest, Fulham and Bournemouth analysis in our Promoted series (articles that will be refreshed before the big kick-off).

Data in this article comes from our Premium Members Area, which you can access with a discounted subscription for as little as £2.49 a month today.

FPL pre-season lessons:

LAST SEASON: ATTACK

TotalRank v other Premier League clubs
Goals scored4811th
Shots 44213th
Shots in the box3177th
Shots on target147=11th
Big chances679th
Expected goals (xG)52.3911th

The attacking statistics for Brentford very much rank in mid-table, which isn’t bad for a newly-promoted side making their Premier League debut.

However, their year splits into life with and without Christian Eriksen (£6.5m). His Gameweek 28 debut followed a terrible run of nine defeats from 11 matches, totalling just four points and six goals in those months.

Until Gameweek 27, the Bees were down in 17th place for total shots and 15th for goals scored.

Eriksen’s arrival sparked a late-season revival of seven wins and 21 goals but, now that the Dane has departed for Manchester United, we don’t know how good Brentford will be in their second campaign.

Headline-making victories came against Arsenal on the opening Friday, plus a 4-1 win away to Chelsea. Also impressive was doing the double over West Ham United.

LAST SEASON: DEFENCE

TotalRank v other Premier League clubs
Goals conceded5612th
Clean sheets9=10th
Shots conceded50310th
Shots in the box conceded3058th
Shots on target conceded17913th
Big chances conceded69=10th
Expected goals conceded (xGC)55.148th

Again, Brentford’s numbers line up slightly better than their 13th-placed finish.

Most of their season was played with a back-three system, which might explain why they ranked eighth-best for conceding shots inside the penalty area. They were seventh-best at allowing attempts from the left flank but 13th for those down the right.

Three of their nine clean sheets arrived within the first five outings, catching FPL managers off-guard. Of course, those who then bought a defensive asset had to wait until Gameweeks 13 and 25 for the next pair.

From Brentford defenders, only Chelsea scored more than their 13 – which includes the three of reclassified Sergi Canos (£5.0m). Add this to defensive assists and they are the best outside of last season’s top four (25).

Pontus Jansson (£4.5m) lead the way for matches started, with 37, while Rico Henry (£4.5m) and Ethan Pinnock (£4.5m) follow with 33 and 32.

OPENING FIXTURES

The opening run of Brentford fixtures is very generous, avoiding all of last season’s top four until Gameweek 12.

In fact, starting from Gameweek 3, they top our Season Ticker all the way up to Gameweek 16.

What would be your ideal bench?

Personally, wouldn’t want anyone over 5.5 on it. Maybe Neto as first sub? Then Andreas?

        Depends on your formation.

I'm 442 so Neco, Andreas and whichever 4.5 striker is likely to get a few mins.

I think I’d like Neto, Bailey & Andrea as my bench as going big at the back. But can’t get the 0.5 for Neto…

I hate fodder. I want a bench that not only plays but who I will start when the fixtures support it. Currently Mbuemo, White & Dunk.

Think I'm set, for the next ten minutes at least.

    Sanchez
    Trent // Trip // Zinch // Cancelo
    Salah // Grealish // Martinelli // Bailey
    Haaland // Kane

The usual suspects on the bench.

    Ramsdale,
    TAA, Robbo, Cancelo, Dalot

Yes, been changing a bit between them. I just really like Saka, and think he will be better long term than Jesus. Could go Martinelli, but afraid of eventual rotation there. But could go both ways obviously.

As a United fan I hope he leaves. I think the team will be better off without him anyways. I like the eneregy and pressing of the front 3 now.

Then it becomes more of a minefield.

I think Sancho definitely starts so it's Rash, Antony & Martial for two (assuming Ronaldo does actually leave.)

If they pay the price for Antony you get the impression ETH doesn't rate Rash out wide. So maybe it's Rash v Martial for forward position?

Looks like he plays mostly on the right side? Will probably rotate with Sancho then.
But all the front 3 as of now can rotate and basically play every position in front, though only Sancho has the right side as his best position imo.

                4 years, 29 days ago

But Sancho is often pushed out to the left. I think the minimum we can say is Anthony's arrival will result in rotation amongst the current players, making all of them off-putting.

He was last year, which is weird since United have a lot of cover there.
Sancho has only played from the right in pre season though? Looks like ETH wants him to play there.

Have Raya, which 4m keeper would you pick:

    (A) Olsen (defo Villa sub keeper at least)
    (B) Balcombe (probably won't be a substitute but will have Brentford keepers locked up if so)

    Thanks.

Brentford bought a new keeper who might displace Raya. At very least he displaces Balcombe. He's 4.5 so not suitable for your bench either.

    2. @persecuted_by_mods

I think some people are just asking for thoughts and trying to seek other views before making a decision, which is totally fine

The spammers however or the ones that basically ask an A or B for every single decision, at that stage you might as well not play the game. Don't understand what fun this game is if it isn't your own thoughts and decisions coming through

I honestly can't stand it. It's the same on twitter. Constant images of people's drafts. It bores me to tears! It's the one thing about the FPL community that I detest. If I was going to rate someone's team I would just say you need to have the same team as me! Absolutely pointless.

There is so much free information out there now, it really isn't rocket science to work out which players are good picks. Do your research and pick your team. Simple.

Do what I do and scroll through pages of RMT, A or B guff until you find a discussion point. Admittedly, that gets harder by the day as people who do have something to discuss give up, get buried, or get trolled.

Can anyone make a convincing argument on why is should go for a £4.5mil keeper when all of the options seem very limited + you have really solid options like Mendy/Ramsdale at £5.0mil. Trying to find a way to cut costs but really not comfortable going for a sub 5mil keeper...

    1. polis
      • 15 Years
      4 years, 29 days ago

That final 0.5m is seemingly always needed and this is the area to shave it because the top 4.5m keeper is never miles away from the 5m's.

Who's the best 4.5m? No idea. Currently think Meslier but most don't agree.

That's the thing, it feels like they are miles away this season. I'd might have been tempted to go with Raya but it feels like he's two bad games away for being benched for Strakosha. The only one that plays for a team that I don't think will concede 2/3 every game is Sanchez, but he never seems to score well.

Right, the argument goes that the points difference between a 4.5 and a 5m keeper is less than for a defender or midfielder. But that presupposes you get the right 4.5 keeper. I prefer to spend more for the security of having a long-term one who will get a decent amount of clean sheets.

You mentioned Meslier. If I was going with a 4.5 I'd do this:

              GW1-2 Meslier
GW3 jump off. Sanchez will have a good run of fixtures, as will Brentford. By then, we'll know who their first choice 4.5 keeper is.

    Which choice?

    A) De Bruyne
    B) Kane/Haaland transfer rotation (+0.5m)

B because there's more room for manoeuvre with 5.5 mids and I wouldn't want Ramsdale taking up one of my 3 Arsenal slots

I am pretty set on a 3mium but still working out the mids. Thinking having a 8mil mid price point would be great, but then I am playing Bailey. Or I can spread the funds, hopefully making a stronger combo, but loose the 8mil mid spot.

So what would be your thoughts?

    Bailey Diaz or Grealish Rashford?

I prefer KDH to Bailey. There are lots of good options at 8.0, but if you have to play both you might need to find the value in the 6.5-7.5 bracket.

Planning an early WC & Kane/Son to Haaland/KDB for GW2:

    Meslier
    Trippier Zinchenko Dalot Justin
    Salah Son Sancho
    Kane Jesus Wilson

    4m N.Williams Pereira Dasilva

Wanted to cover all bases. Lloris is safest way into Spurs defence. Villa could be hard to beat with Gerrard tactics. Robbo as had to have one of him or TAA. Arsenal have decent fixtures and Gab a threat at set pieces. Salah a must, a least for start of season. Mount differential. Neto and Sancho decent VFM. Forwards speak for themselves but, as others, may switch to Haaland after first game. Even have a couple of playing subs.

Could be gold. The winning differential. Problem with Podders is he does get injured a lot. I'm sticking to the safety of Neto (for now), but Podence could be the high-risk-high-reward punt.

    1. polis

He got an assist, there's been talk of a blossoming bromance with Haaland and there's Pep's "second season" with a player history (apparently).

I think he's a decent shout but agree with you he'll still see rotation. Particularly with 5 subs.

What I like about him most is his price and other options at that price, currently in my team and with Sterling and Jesus gone I think he will kick on and see a lot more minutes this season.

I have no intention on getting Haaland either and breaking up my Kane and Son double up, so he’s my City attack.

Also don’t have Jesus. So it’s going to be a nervy GW1 for me!

            Current midfield Salah Saka Neto
            with keV
            KDB Diaz Rashford
Being very unsure about Rashford stops me changing things. When I start changing my mind just to be different things go belly up

Of the four, Neto is likely the most nailed and does have the early fixtures.

For me Arsenal seem to have clicked best and Marti at 6m could be a short term bargain.

Do like the look of a Utd forward (Rash, Sancho or Martial) assuming Ronaldo leaves but Villa have slightly changed formation to accommodate Bailey and could revert back. Plus Ings or Buendia surely not massively behind.

Would start the season with B.

Chelsea looking somewhat off defensively & James could be playing in a back four or part of a three. New signings would surely need some time to adapt.

I think l read somewhere a while ago that we'll get an extra wildcard this season or something due to the winter world cup.

During the world cup which is in the middle of the league season, you get unlimited transfers until the premier league returns

      Essentially an extra wildcard

Yup. They don't call it a wildcard; they call it 'unlimited transfers between GW16 and 17 (the World Cup break)'. It's a wildcard that you could use with another chip if you wanted to go real crazy.

Pretty much a template pick with a few changes here and there. I'm sure this is not gonna make the final draft. Don't seem to be able to decide

    Mendy (Sanchez)
    Cancelo Trippier TAA (N.Williams Justin)
    Salah Coutinho Rashford Martinelli Neto
Haaland Jesus (4.5 - probably greenwood)

    0.5 ITB

Looks like I'm gonna regret not jumping in on the Kane/Son bandwagon
