Gameweek 1 of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) is drawing ever nearer and we’re profiling all 20 Premier League teams before the season starts.

After weighing up what ArsenalAston Villa and Brentford players have to offer, we continue our team-by-team guides with Brighton and Hove Albion.

You can check out our Nottingham Forest, Fulham and Bournemouth analysis in our Promoted series, articles that will be refreshed before the big kick-off.

FPL pre-season lessons:

Data in this article comes from our Premium Members Area, which you can access with a discounted subscription for as little as £2.49 a month today.

LAST SEASON: ATTACK

TotalRank v other Premier League clubs
Goals scored4215th=
Shots4897th
Shots in the box29810th=
Shots on target14614th
Big chances6311th
Expected goals (xG)54.459th

Underdelivering on some decent underlying stats has become a feature of Brighton seasons.

In each of their five years as a Premier League club, they have scored with fewer than 10% of their shots – ranking them in the bottom six in all five campaigns.

Only relegated Norwich City ‘underachieved’ more than the Seagulls last season when it came to actual goals scored versus expected goals (xG):

It’s a chronic issue and not one that Albion seem to have really addressed in the summer, with the jury still out on returning loanee Denis Undav (£5.5m) and the promising-but-raw Julio Enciso (£5.0m).

As a footnote, the underlying numbers were even better after the switch to a 3-5-2 in the run-in – despite Graham Potter’s side facing four ‘big six’ sides in that time. Albion were ranked sixth for minutes per big chance and xG in the final eight Gameweeks.

LAST SEASON: DEFENCE

TotalRank v other Premier League clubs
Goals conceded446th
Clean sheets117th=
Shots conceded4766th
Shots in the box conceded2916th
Shots on target conceded1466th
Big chances conceded587th
Expected goals conceded (xGC)50.746th

Brighton’s clean sheet count and goals conceded tally was more in keeping with the rest of their underlying defensive numbers.

Albion did ‘overachieve’ based on xGC – but then so too did 14 other clubs, in Opta’s eyes.

These strong figures you see above aren’t a fluke, either, as a Potter-led Brighton posted even better underlying numbers in 2020/21, finishing third for lowest xGC.

OPENING FIXTURES

The best budget FPL defenders for 2022/23 4

Robert Sanchez (£4.5m) kept clean sheets in nine of his 27 appearances against sides outside of the top five last season, a relevant stat as Brighton don’t meet Liverpool, Chelsea, Man City, Spurs or Arsenal this side of the September international break.

Such a strong opening schedule sees the Seagulls placed second on our Season Ticker from Gameweeks 1-8, when clubs are ranked by fixture difficulty.

The two-week hiatus will be a good time to hop off any Brighton players, as all of last season’s top four follow in Gameweeks 9-14.

"Goalkeeper Marek Rodak kept his place in the starting XI for all but two of Fulham’s Championship matches from mid-October onwards, and largely performed well.

The Slovakian shot-stopper managed 14 clean sheets in 33 outings, conceding only 26 goals in that time, with a save percentage of 72.9%.

That meant Paolo Gazzaniga had to settle for a place on the bench. The former Tottenham Hotspur man signed in the summer of 2021 and immediately came into the side, but was dropped after just 11 starts with mistakes creeping into his game.

Rodak, however, has struggled for game time in Fulham’s previous Premier League campaigns and lacks top-flight experience, and it remains to be seen if Silva plans on recruiting a new ‘keeper in the summer."

Rodak has played 2 x 90; Gazzaniga has played 1 x 90 so far in preseason. The last preseason game will be the biggest clue.

Yeah I'm warming to the idea of starting with him now Jimenez is injured, and Andreas is looking good.

Worst case, I play Fulham's #10, who's also on set pieces. Not bad.

Been happy with my team for the last day.

The final decision seems to be

    a) Robbo + 5mill mid (possibly Almiron)

    b) Luis Diaz + 4m bench fodder defender (not Neco as I already have him)

    Thoughts on this choice?

Premium full backs or medium prices mids?

    1. Piggs Boson

      First one for sure.

A medium priced mid won't get near 200pts, a premium fullback might...

Bowen got there last year! But for example, Robertson and James are probably better valued than Luis Diaz and Mount respectively. This would indicate one should rather start with 5-3-1 than try to decide which 8.0m mid to get in 4-4-2.

Yeah it would indicate that if there were 5 defenders capable of such scores. However, given Chelsea's problems, I'd say only 3 defenders with such a ceiling remain.

          For now.

It's like Chocolate Eclairs or Macarons... Youl probably pay a slight premium for Macarons, but if get them right they bang. Easy to get them wrong tho. Chocolate Eclairs a much safer bet IMO.

It's not as simple as some think. You have to figure out if a cheap defender + mid priced mid outscores an expensive defender + a cheap mid

      1. Piggs Boson
        • 15 Years
        4 years, 1 month ago

That only really comes into effect once you have 5 defenders already.

If you only have 4 defenders, directly comparing a mid and a def is sensible imo, as you can just switch formation.

For those who are leaning towards a 'threemium' team - if you only end up captaining Salah 2-3 times within the first 10 gameweeks (e.g. home fixtures vs Bournemouth, Wolves and Brighton) - does he still necessarily represent 'good value' at 13m?

This isn't supposed to be a case for 'no-Salah', I'm genuinely curious - if 13% of your budget goes to one player who is only captained 2-3 times in those weeks, is that better than the combined points from a 5m defender and 8m mid for example?

    1. TheBiffas
      • 5 Years
      4 years, 1 month ago

I will still captain Salah most games tbh

      1. Kobayashi
        • 7 Years
        4 years, 1 month ago

In which case, the same can be said about your other 3rd premium!

        1. TheBiffas
          • 5 Years
          4 years, 1 month ago

True, but my other premiums are 11.5, and I think an 11.5 + a cheap enabler could outscore two mid-priced players short-term

          1. Kobayashi
            • 7 Years
            4 years, 1 month ago

That I'm not sure of - imagine a combination of an 11.5 (3rd premium) forward and 4.5m enabler, neither of which you are captaining most weeks as you say due to Salah being Salah.

Will they really score higher than two 8m midfielders like Diaz and Mahrez?

            1. TheBiffas
              • 5 Years
              4 years, 1 month ago

I believe they can 🙂 Dalot for example could easily come away with an assist and clean sheet against Brighton, 9-12 points for a 4.5

                • 5 Years
                4 years, 1 month ago

Of course the 8m mids are more likely to come away with that sort of return but there's no guarantee.

Fair enough! Just playing devil's advocate here, I'm actually looking for reasons to lock-in my own 'threemium' draft so good to hear your take on it.

    2. The Mentaculus
      • 5 Years

Bang on as usual bud. Dilution of captaincy is the main reason I haven't even tried it. Also, what happens when you have 2 highly owned captain picks - e.g. Salah & Kane GW1 - and you want to captain Kane but Salah's EO is over 100%? Aren't you at risk of his points actually dragging your rank down when you don't cap him?

      1. Kobayashi
        • 7 Years
        4 years, 1 month ago

Exactly, so in the GWs where you decide to captain one of your other two premiums you still risk dropping in rank due to Salah's EO when both have good fixtures - but then you have the added impact of the value across the rest of your team being stored up in a 3rd premium which impacts performance even if your alternative does well...

        ...if that all makes sense!

    Meslier
    TAA Cancelo Dalot Saliba
    Salah Rashford Diaz Mount
    Kane Jesus

    Ward Williams Andreas Greenwood

Thoughts on this draft? Saliba could become another 4.5 Def (Mings, Jonny, Ait nouri, White, Mee)

He will start, and he's very dangerous when on the pitch. Then he's likely to get subbed at 70min for Nketiah or Smith Rowe.
