Gameweek 1 of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) is drawing ever nearer and we’re profiling all 20 Premier League teams before the season starts.

After weighing up what ArsenalAston Villa and Brentford players have to offer, we continue our team-by-team guides with Brighton and Hove Albion.

You can check out our Nottingham Forest, Fulham and Bournemouth analysis in our Promoted series, articles that will be refreshed before the big kick-off.

FPL pre-season lessons:

Data in this article comes from our Premium Members Area, which you can access with a discounted subscription for as little as £2.49 a month today.

LAST SEASON: ATTACK

TotalRank v other Premier League clubs
Goals scored4215th=
Shots4897th
Shots in the box29810th=
Shots on target14614th
Big chances6311th
Expected goals (xG)54.459th

Underdelivering on some decent underlying stats has become a feature of Brighton seasons.

In each of their five years as a Premier League club, they have scored with fewer than 10% of their shots – ranking them in the bottom six in all five campaigns.

Only relegated Norwich City ‘underachieved’ more than the Seagulls last season when it came to actual goals scored versus expected goals (xG):

It’s a chronic issue and not one that Albion seem to have really addressed in the summer, with the jury still out on returning loanee Denis Undav (£5.5m) and the promising-but-raw Julio Enciso (£5.0m).

As a footnote, the underlying numbers were even better after the switch to a 3-5-2 in the run-in – despite Graham Potter’s side facing four ‘big six’ sides in that time. Albion were ranked sixth for minutes per big chance and xG in the final eight Gameweeks.

LAST SEASON: DEFENCE

TotalRank v other Premier League clubs
Goals conceded446th
Clean sheets117th=
Shots conceded4766th
Shots in the box conceded2916th
Shots on target conceded1466th
Big chances conceded587th
Expected goals conceded (xGC)50.746th

Brighton’s clean sheet count and goals conceded tally was more in keeping with the rest of their underlying defensive numbers.

Albion did ‘overachieve’ based on xGC – but then so too did 14 other clubs, in Opta’s eyes.

These strong figures you see above aren’t a fluke, either, as a Potter-led Brighton posted even better underlying numbers in 2020/21, finishing third for lowest xGC.

OPENING FIXTURES

The best budget FPL defenders for 2022/23 4

Robert Sanchez (£4.5m) kept clean sheets in nine of his 27 appearances against sides outside of the top five last season, a relevant stat as Brighton don’t meet Liverpool, Chelsea, Man City, Spurs or Arsenal this side of the September international break.

Such a strong opening schedule sees the Seagulls placed second on our Season Ticker from Gameweeks 1-8, when clubs are ranked by fixture difficulty.

The two-week hiatus will be a good time to hop off any Brighton players, as all of last season’s top four follow in Gameweeks 9-14.

Welcome JJ. I'm not too sure that Chilwell will be fit to start the season after missing the last friendly - something to keep an eye on at least in their final friendly tomorrow

B I'm swerving Chelsea and United assets until we have some idea how prepared they are for PL combat. We have no doubts about Liverpool and City however; I'd load up on their assets.

What do reckon of this team? Could get Mahrez instead of Sancho by getting a £4.5m keeper instead of Ramsdale? Not sure of Haaland starting so going with Kane.

    Ramsdale
    TAA, Robbo, Cancelo, Digne
    Salah, Sancho, Martinelli, Neto
    Kane, Jesus

    Steele, Neco, Andreas, Greenwood

Most stats are a myth when your only building a team for 6-8 games

Trying to not have 3 players from any team so early on so i can switch to anyone easy enough

Fair enough, but stats aren't a general myth just because you're talking about 7 games vs. 38. If you have Matip and someone else has TAA, and Pool keeps a clean sheet and TAA gets an assist, you only miss out on the assist and a BPS point). But if you have Jordan Henderson, and Salah gets a brace, well, math.

True but KDB could do the same for me and most don't have him

I do. Frankly, I'm a bit stunned so many have Haaland over KDB. One is a proven commodity in FPL, in the conversation for best player in the world, plays a position that gets rewarded for clean sheets and more BPS, and the other has never kicked a ball in the PL.

Long term I will build abound KDB & Salah but City/Spurs captain rotation is better early on and plenty of other pool options whereas spurs/city its KDB & Kane or Son & Haaland. First is safer bet for me

There's somethingg about the Arsenal defence... and those two opening fixtures...

I can see the logic behind the clamour, fair enough, for a team in and around fourth

Ramsdale in goal may be part of it... patches of looking excellent, patches of being dysfunctional

Newcastle with Pope and Botman and lacking in attack could be better

Not sure if Lingard has even so much as played a friendly in the last six months. Doubt if he'll be match ready.

Too many cheap Man U assets closer to the goal for Eriksen to be a consideration.

I expect him to get over 200pts. I really like the player, and think he will suit Chelsea.

But he's in an awkward position of not being as good value as other options, yet also not being the best captain option. So it's hard to find a role for him.

I agree he is a poor finisher but 160 points being his low bar might put him on par with some who's high bar is 160 points costing 8 or more? (defenders excluded)

Sterling has consistently matched his xG throughout his career. Statistically he's an average finisher.

Now and again he misses a sitter and it sticks in people's minds, but he's scored many good goals that people seem to forget about immediately...

I can see him being a good captain option in certain weeks, GWs 3 and 7 for instance, I just don't think he's the best option.

If I get him I'd have to lose a superior captain option like a Salah or Son/Kane or KDB for instance.

KDB over Salah the big difference. Robbo is a bit different too, but not really as it's a Salah-less team. Haaland over Kane a bit different too.

I’m also on a no salah team, so I like it! Similarish team as your one.

I’m starting with Kane instead of Haaland and I’m swerving Chelsea until I see how they do defensively.

Ive got Diaz as second Pool player, but keeping one Pool spot open (as well as an extra £1m) to upgrade Jesus to Darwin should he start firing from the off

What do you reckon guys? Feel free to pick it apart.
    Main doubt is Johnson.
    Raya
    TAA Cancelo Dias Trippier
    Salah Son Diaz Martinelli
    Jesus Johnson
    (4.0 4.0 4.5 4.5)

I wouldn’t feel good with johnson

      Cheers guys.
Say I do Johnson to 4.5, gives me 1.5 to upgrade mid, so a 6mil. Maybe Bailey but not sure he is a better option than Johnson. Plus Andreas feels like a really good bench player.
      Thanks though!

Thoughts on this, opted for a decent bench rather than just fodder with grealish and Martinelli a little punty...

    Meslier
    Trent Cancelo Chilwell Zinchenko Cash
    Salah Grealish Martinelli
    Haaland Jesus

    Pickford Neto Bailey Plange

    1. Emiliano Sala
      • 10 Years

Too much money on bench for me as you know

      1. TanN

        4 years, 1 month ago

Which 8m mid though? I'd rather have grealish than mahrez I think, and I've got Salah so no real need for Diaz, and I've got Martinelli so won't want Saka, and I'm not sure with mount or Maddison...

Neco and Andreas are great benchable options

      1. TanN
        • 5 Years
        4 years, 1 month ago

Which defender would you downgrade to Neco though?

        Trent - absolutely not
        Cancelo - absolutely not
        Chilwell - ideally not
        Zinchenko - no
Cash - maybe but I'd rather him, more points potential than Neco imo

And Andreas is a decent option but he's also playing Liverpool in the first game...

Wanted someone other than Raya with that other keeper coming in and following their big loss on preseason.

Only 3% owned Meslier and decent first two games.

    Pope
    TAA, Robbo, Cancelo, Tomiyasu
    Son, Maddison, JWP, Martinelli
    Kane, Jesus

Darlow. S Longstaff, Lyle Taylor, Neco Williams.

Double Spurs attack? Just do Son + Maddison > Salah + x imo. Not a fan of JWP, feels a boring pick

        Need some value picks too.

Maddison is one i really want in. Already comprised on Bowen to Maddison because of budget constraints.

I'm looking at Trippier but don't want to double up on Newcastle defence right away.

Still not sure which way to go with the premium options.

I'm on Salah and Haaland at the minute, so quite template.

So, a poll should sort it, yes?

    Premium mid:
    1) Salah
    2) KDB
    3) Son
    4) no premium mid

    Premium forward:
    1) Kane
    2) Haaland
    3) no premium forward
