Gameweek 1 of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) is drawing ever nearer and we’re profiling all 20 Premier League teams before the season starts.

After weighing up what ArsenalAston Villa and Brentford players have to offer, we continue our team-by-team guides with Brighton and Hove Albion.

You can check out our Nottingham Forest, Fulham and Bournemouth analysis in our Promoted series, articles that will be refreshed before the big kick-off.

FPL pre-season lessons:

Data in this article comes from our Premium Members Area, which you can access with a discounted subscription for as little as £2.49 a month today.

LAST SEASON: ATTACK

TotalRank v other Premier League clubs
Goals scored4215th=
Shots4897th
Shots in the box29810th=
Shots on target14614th
Big chances6311th
Expected goals (xG)54.459th

Underdelivering on some decent underlying stats has become a feature of Brighton seasons.

In each of their five years as a Premier League club, they have scored with fewer than 10% of their shots – ranking them in the bottom six in all five campaigns.

Only relegated Norwich City ‘underachieved’ more than the Seagulls last season when it came to actual goals scored versus expected goals (xG):

It’s a chronic issue and not one that Albion seem to have really addressed in the summer, with the jury still out on returning loanee Denis Undav (£5.5m) and the promising-but-raw Julio Enciso (£5.0m).

As a footnote, the underlying numbers were even better after the switch to a 3-5-2 in the run-in – despite Graham Potter’s side facing four ‘big six’ sides in that time. Albion were ranked sixth for minutes per big chance and xG in the final eight Gameweeks.

LAST SEASON: DEFENCE

TotalRank v other Premier League clubs
Goals conceded446th
Clean sheets117th=
Shots conceded4766th
Shots in the box conceded2916th
Shots on target conceded1466th
Big chances conceded587th
Expected goals conceded (xGC)50.746th

Brighton’s clean sheet count and goals conceded tally was more in keeping with the rest of their underlying defensive numbers.

Albion did ‘overachieve’ based on xGC – but then so too did 14 other clubs, in Opta’s eyes.

These strong figures you see above aren’t a fluke, either, as a Potter-led Brighton posted even better underlying numbers in 2020/21, finishing third for lowest xGC.

OPENING FIXTURES

The best budget FPL defenders for 2022/23 4

Robert Sanchez (£4.5m) kept clean sheets in nine of his 27 appearances against sides outside of the top five last season, a relevant stat as Brighton don’t meet Liverpool, Chelsea, Man City, Spurs or Arsenal this side of the September international break.

Such a strong opening schedule sees the Seagulls placed second on our Season Ticker from Gameweeks 1-8, when clubs are ranked by fixture difficulty.

The two-week hiatus will be a good time to hop off any Brighton players, as all of last season’s top four follow in Gameweeks 9-14.

Ive got 1M in the bank atm and I don't know where to improve, Do you like to spend all the money or do you like the idea of a little bit spare in the bank?

Ill post team at the risk of being told 15 places I can actually improve haha.

    Ederson
    Trent - Cancelo - Chilwell - Walker
    Salah - Diaz - Mount - Almiron - Neto
    Kane

    Lis - Neco - Archer - Plange.

Im a Newcastle fan so pretty set on Almiron given his linkup with Trippier pre season and his goal contributions throughout. Was on Martinelli so not really interested in that swap back.

    What do you think?

I think I might swap Chilwell for Robertson and Dias for Kulveski but I think it's fine if you don't, that one million will very helpful.

Is Chilwell fit to start season?

I think you need some Arsenal attack with Jesus so you could swap over with Mount or Diaz

Prefer Trippier or Zinchenko over Walker

Considering he's South Korean, I'd take the comment with a large pinch of salt, he'd only be there if TOT were :o)

What does the fact he's South Korea have to do with anything? And there's pinches of salt and then there's just saying mad things that make no sense. Just randomly saying a player has three games in Japan next week is someone who's filled his bath up with salt and taken it to the local park.

That he has no personal ties to the country, like I said, he'd only be there if he was there with TOT or South Korean national team (and you'd already ruled that one out)...

I just didn't understand why someone would randomly say it unless there was perhaps practice games for players that are based in Asia, due to our leagues having different start dates. No offence taken from you whatsoever.

Toying with the idea of doing a GW1 BB and straight to WC. My first attempt and feel free to rip to shreds, work in progress.

    Meslier / Dubravka
    Robbo / Cancelo / Dalot / Lamptey / Neco
    Mahrez / Maddison / Diaz / Coutinho / Martinelli
    Kane / Jesus / Watkins

    1. Salarrivederci
      • 10 Years
      4 years, 1 month ago

I’m on that strategy too, but you got to play the fixtures of that GW and not the value game..

      -Not sure Dubravka starts
      -Lamptey will concede
      -Neco will concede
      -Arsenal tough opening fixture
-Better picks that Coutinho at that price
-Careful on Pep Roulette (you need 15 starters)

      How about:
      Meslier - Mendy
      TAA - Robbo - Cancelo - Trippier - Dalot
      Diaz - Rashford - Bailey - Almiron - KDH
      (K)ane - Haaland - Martial

Just one of my drafts. Would probably downgrade Haaland and upgrade KDH and Almiron

Yeah Dubravka mostly likely won’t play and surely with Fulham in GW1 triple Liverpool is a must.

I’d be tempted to sell coutinho down to Neto or Bailey and sacrifice Cancelo for Trent.

This would allow you to update Dubravka, Lamptey and or Neco to people like Trippier, Cash, Martinez, Pope, Gabriel etc etc

    Thoughts on this aggressive plan?

    GW1 team

    Raya
    Trent - Cancelo - Dalot - N.Williams
    Son - Salah - Neto - Wissa
    Haaland - Jesus

Then in GW2 do Son to KDB to have a Cancelo / KDB / Haaland trio and then in GW3 do a Salah to Sterling (c) plan (if he is looking good).

Could then potentially just WC in GW4 to rebalance the squad with Salah back

Any thoughts on this 532? I think the value is in the defenders and it allows for 3 premiums.

    Raya
    TAA, James, Walker, Perisic, Neco
    Salah, KDB, Neto
    Kane, Jesus

    Balcombe, Andreas, Colback, Greenwood

    1. Visionaries

    2. Herger
      • 4 Years

I agree that value’s in defenders. Not those ones though. I’m not sure it’s worth the 3 premiums if you’re having to play one of Neco/Andreas every week.

      Not keen on Perisic/Walker either.

It’s not bad though tbh - could definitely work.

I think you just give up too much trying to squeeze a 3rd premium in - realistically you only need 2 for captaincy options, whoever you won’t really captain is unlikely to outscore the mid priced options by enough to justify the sacrifices.

Just as an example, let’s say you never captain KDB. For the money you’ve spent on KDB and Neco - you could have Luiz Diaz, Cancelo and a spare £1m to play with - without the double points for captaincy I’d always expect the later to outperform

Not sure Mbuemo offers enough - not even guaranteed to play - to justify starting.

Also not sure when lingard last kicked a ball very unlikely to start the season.

Any love for Bowen or does that first fixture put people off too much? He scored twice in the same fixture last season.

I like him. Just a case of ‘can’t have them all’. Think it’s tough with so many other good options at 0.5 less too

Yeah probably right, A lot of good options in similar/cheaper bracket

        Same here.

Also West Ham begin Thursday night Conference League after GW2, and Moyes tends to go hard on Europe.

Which 8.0 midfielder to complete my team?

    Mendy
    Trent / Cancelo/ Chilwell / Zinchenko
    Salah / *8.0* / Martinelli / Neto
    Haaland / Jesus

    Gazzaniga / Neco / Andreas / Plange

Mount, Diaz, Maddison, Kulu, Mahrez, Saka...!?

I would go Kulu for GW1

I may experience some outages in the next hour as I'm having a curry.

Shouldn't be anything too pong, but just a warning in case I have any issues...

    Thoughts on this?
    Only concern is Walker.

    Raya / Gazzaniga
    Walker / Robbo / Trippier / Zinchenko / NW
    Kdb / Salah / Neto / Rashford / Andreas
    Kane / Jesus / 4.5

    Kdb and Kane
    or
    Håland and Son?

Walker is fine as a pick, as long as you have a bench that can cover him when he gets rotated

Tricky, but I would go KDB and Kane. Both should get off to a strong start.

Too much of a risk to rotate N Williams / Andreas / Da Silva in and out depending on fixtures as 11th player?

Considering WC around GW5, so only a short term strategy.

Just keep an eye on what formation Gerrard plays in their last friendly. 433 then Bailey is good to go. 442 with a diamond to accommodate Coutinho then we have a problem.

NoMo is viable, might work, might not... But it does free up a lot of cash if you don't go Son/KdB in his place... I'm covering with Diaz / Nunez as things stand...

    Which team would you pick?

    A: 5-3-2
    Sánchez // Steele
    Trent Robertson Cancelo James Jonny
Salah Saka Neto // Andreas Dasilva
    Haaland Jesus // Plange

Benefits: Robertson and Saka are secure options for decent points. Jonny is a decent enabler
Drawbacks: 5-3-2 feels inflexible if I ever wanted an additional midfielder, bench is weak, double Wolves for GW3

    B: 4-4-2
    Ederson // Olsen
Trent Cancelo James Zinchenko // Williams
Salah Díaz Martinelli Neto // Andreas
    Haaland Jesus // Plange

Benefits: almost all from top 5 teams, decent bench options, flexible, triple City
Drawbacks: no Robertson, Zinchenko feels like a punt

Thoughts? I know it’s very light in midfield lol
    Ramsdale / 4.0
    Robbo - TAA - Cancelo - Perisic - Tripper
    Martinelli - Diaz / Bailey - Pereira - Colback
    Jesus - Haaland - Kane
