Gameweek 1 of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) is drawing ever nearer and we’re profiling all 20 Premier League teams before the season starts.

We continue our team-by-team guides with Crystal Palace, seeing what their players have to offer.

You can check out our Nottingham Forest, Fulham and Bournemouth analysis in our Promoted series (articles that will be refreshed before the big kick-off).

Data in this article comes from our Premium Members Area, which you can access with a discounted subscription for as little as £2.49 a month today.

FPL points predictions for Gameweek 3 and beyond 3

LAST SEASON: ATTACK

TotalRank v other Premier League clubs
Goals scored5010th
Shots 41216th
Shots in the box3019th
Shots on target147=11th
Big chances6112th
Expected goals (xG)54.628th

The mid-table finish of Patrick Vieira’s debut campaign as head coach matches the general rank for attacking statistics.

15 teams pulled off more shots but that’s only because the Eagles attempted the fewest from outside the box (111), with Vieira seemingly pushing his side to be patient and less wasteful. As a result, they come ninth for shots inside the box and eighth for expected goals (xG).

Palace finished just one point short of their highest ever 38-game Premier League total, while Wilfried Zaha (£7.0m) had his best top-flight campaign for goals scored (14) and FPL points (150).

Vieira’s biggest task over the summer was to replace the excellent loanee Conor Gallagher (£6.0m), whose fantastic first half of the season encouraged parent club Chelsea to keep him around this time.

LAST SEASON: DEFENCE

TotalRank v other Premier League clubs
Goals conceded467th
Clean sheets126th
Shots conceded4435th
Shots in the box conceded2675th
Shots on target conceded1445th
Big chances conceded452nd
Expected goals conceded (xGC)46.735th

Palace’s underlying defensive numbers were outstanding in 2021/22.

For the Eagles to rank fifth over the whole season for conceding attempts, shots on target and shots in the box – whilst having the second-best record for allowing big chances – is both surprising and a great indication of Vieira’s impact at Selhurst Park.

Defensive solidity allowed some big wins to take place against the league’s best, with 3-0 home wins over Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal bettered by a 2-0 victory away to champions Manchester City. In fact, the Eagles have the honour of being the only team that Pep Guardiola’s side failed to score past in either meeting.

Palace’s back four also provided 12 attacking returns, thanks to the four assists of Joachim Andersen and two goals of Marc Guehi. Of all defenders priced at £4.5m, these two are the highest points scorers from last season.

OPENING FIXTURES

The nasty run of opening fixtures will likely prevent FPL managers from investing in Zaha and such a strong defence.

Trips to Liverpool and Man City take place in the first four matches, placing Palace bottom of our Season Ticker for the first six Gameweeks and they continue to be until Gameweek 13.

One plan might be to wait until the fifth outing, as the ticker ranks Palace as third-best between then and the World Cup break that follows Gameweek 16.

Palace’s run from Gameweeks 10-18 sees them face all three newly promoted clubs plus Leeds, Wolves, Southampton and Everton.

Diaz and Salah are set in stone in our attack for 90% of games, he’ll just be subbed for Jota a lot of the time around the 60/70th minute.

I fee like ASM could explode. And Martinelli isn't going to play 90 regularly plus not overly keen on an Arsenal double up to start

Dont worry about the template police bud, back yourself. Nothing wrong with Robertson over Trent. But keep an eye on Tomiyasu's fitness (or lack of) - I switched him to Saliba since he hasnt featured in friendlies

With Robbo on the same side as Diaz, and with Diaz being more defensive and less attacking than Mane, I can see Robbo benefitting this season more so than last

      Nice team.

      I wouldn't do that.

Mendy is risky but even though Chelsea lost their defense, their midfield is still insanely good and supposed to be fully healthy to start the season. That and their run of fixtures see him as viable option for me.

Mahrez 6% owned has to be the greatest gift to start the season.

Explosive, full preseason, Jesus + Sterling gone.. For those worried about rotation, Mahrez has played over 340 career games as RW. Foden + Grealish less than 10 each.. Worth any risk imo.

    -------------

Looking to Value here in the mids and really think Diaz and Nunez could become serious captain options. Mount and kulu allow me to pivot to any flourishing mid priced mid easily. Adding another premium really de-values the 11th player and without much to go on its hard to back the cheaper pics....

the more time goes on i seem to be moving away from 'big at the back' drafts - is anyone else finding the same?

    1. Piggs Boson
      • 15 Years
      4 years, 1 month ago

It's more that my faith in Chelsea has shaken, rather than moving away from big at the back. Were James and Chilwell fully fit, playing as wingbacks, in a solid Chelsea unit, I'd probably be on 5 big defenders.

It might take the new Chelsea players time to gel, and while Chelsea still don't have another CB after Koulibaly, James may be playing RCB. With Chilwell, his lack of pre-season gametime is a concern.

But when it comes to players like TAA, Cancelo, Robbo, I have no doubts. I trust Liverpool and City.

Doesn't Chalobah (and Azpi) play RCB?
I'm hoping TT plays him, Silva and Koulibaly.
TT is a great manager he will very soon sort out the defence, if not from the off. I hope.

          I thought Azpi was leaving.

Not sure Tuchel trusts Chalobah. Last season he'd rather play James RCB than play Chalobah right?

Yeah, I'm sure he'll sort it out, but it's a question of how long it takes. Seismic change in that defensive unit.

The current state of play is Chelsea feel Barca have played dirty in nabbing Kounde, so are blocking Azpi and Alonso from joining Barca. How this plays out is anybody's guess but at the very least and moves will be held up.
Another factor is that Chelsea might not manage to get another CB, but Dumfries might join and he's a RWB. That would probably mean James has to move to RCB.

How does affect my draft? With me swerving Chelsea's WBs for now, it leaves me with 3 premium defenders - TAA, Robbo and Cancelo. I have 2x5m defenders and am still going with a Back 5, but it's not as 'big' as it once was.

Yes, I've switched from 5 at the back to 4, and now I'm on 3. It's mainly the fact that Chelsea don't look ready, and with James likely to play right-central defence. And then also I keep wavering between Robertson and Diaz. My ideal back 5 would be:
      TAA - Robbo - Cancelo - Chilwell - James.

Yep, we know that Haaland is going to get rests, and currently we have no way of predicting when those rests will come. It might be the home games against easier opposition. This would restrict his appeal considerably.

      I like it.

Main concern is Kulu. Richarlison has played RW a lot in pre-season with Conte praising his performances. Minutes will surely be restricted. Mount is the stable alternative, but I'm a Foden fan. Hopefully he plays RW in the Shield tomorrow.

Ah that sounds concerning indeed. I am now debating between these 2 trios.

        A) Haaland Kulu Bailey
        B) Kane Grealish Neto

Will need to keep an eye on Grealish though!

Yeah I wouldn't trust Grealish. Might share time with Mahrez.

Also Wolves aren't looking great. No significant signings, Moutinho a year older, Jimenez injured.

I like Bailey. He's looked tremendous. And Gerrard confirmed he's currently first choice: https://www.reddit.com/r/FantasyPL/comments/w62c3e/if_i_had_to_pick_a_team_for_the_real_thing/

It's just Kulu I wouldn't feel comfortable with.

Which one? Dalot is 100% nailed at present but if United bring in a new RB that would change.
Mings has been stripped of captaincy due to poor performances on the pitch. Whether he improves and keeps his place or doesn't and loses it is the unknown factor.

Mealier / Gazza (tad unsure which 4.5)

TAA, Cancelo, Trippier, Ait Nouri, Neco

Could always upgrade Ait Nouri to Robertson and downgrade martial but with the current CR7 issues he could be an early steal.
