Gameweek 1 of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) is drawing ever nearer and we’re profiling all 20 Premier League teams before the season starts.

We continue our team-by-team guides with Crystal Palace, seeing what their players have to offer.

You can check out our Nottingham Forest, Fulham and Bournemouth analysis in our Promoted series (articles that will be refreshed before the big kick-off).

Data in this article comes from our Premium Members Area, which you can access with a discounted subscription for as little as £2.49 a month today.

FPL points predictions for Gameweek 3 and beyond 3

LAST SEASON: ATTACK

TotalRank v other Premier League clubs
Goals scored5010th
Shots 41216th
Shots in the box3019th
Shots on target147=11th
Big chances6112th
Expected goals (xG)54.628th

The mid-table finish of Patrick Vieira’s debut campaign as head coach matches the general rank for attacking statistics.

15 teams pulled off more shots but that’s only because the Eagles attempted the fewest from outside the box (111), with Vieira seemingly pushing his side to be patient and less wasteful. As a result, they come ninth for shots inside the box and eighth for expected goals (xG).

Palace finished just one point short of their highest ever 38-game Premier League total, while Wilfried Zaha (£7.0m) had his best top-flight campaign for goals scored (14) and FPL points (150).

Vieira’s biggest task over the summer was to replace the excellent loanee Conor Gallagher (£6.0m), whose fantastic first half of the season encouraged parent club Chelsea to keep him around this time.

LAST SEASON: DEFENCE

TotalRank v other Premier League clubs
Goals conceded467th
Clean sheets126th
Shots conceded4435th
Shots in the box conceded2675th
Shots on target conceded1445th
Big chances conceded452nd
Expected goals conceded (xGC)46.735th

Palace’s underlying defensive numbers were outstanding in 2021/22.

For the Eagles to rank fifth over the whole season for conceding attempts, shots on target and shots in the box – whilst having the second-best record for allowing big chances – is both surprising and a great indication of Vieira’s impact at Selhurst Park.

Defensive solidity allowed some big wins to take place against the league’s best, with 3-0 home wins over Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal bettered by a 2-0 victory away to champions Manchester City. In fact, the Eagles have the honour of being the only team that Pep Guardiola’s side failed to score past in either meeting.

Palace’s back four also provided 12 attacking returns, thanks to the four assists of Joachim Andersen and two goals of Marc Guehi. Of all defenders priced at £4.5m, these two are the highest points scorers from last season.

OPENING FIXTURES

The nasty run of opening fixtures will likely prevent FPL managers from investing in Zaha and such a strong defence.

Trips to Liverpool and Man City take place in the first four matches, placing Palace bottom of our Season Ticker for the first six Gameweeks and they continue to be until Gameweek 13.

One plan might be to wait until the fifth outing, as the ticker ranks Palace as third-best between then and the World Cup break that follows Gameweek 16.

Palace’s run from Gameweeks 10-18 sees them face all three newly promoted clubs plus Leeds, Wolves, Southampton and Everton.

    Sanchez - Steele
TAA Cancelo Justin Trippier (N Williams)
Salah Son Bailey Dewsbury Hall (Andreas)
    Kane Jesus (Greenwood)

Three Premiums. Not sold on any of the $8m players. Risky in midfield. Can switch Son or Kane to KDB or Haarland if needed.

I am going for a 3mium as well, but I think Jesus takes too much out of the midfield. But if you are comfortable with your mid go for it.

1st Draft - Personally couldn't do Digne. Like the Gabriel shout and also interesting thoughts on Kulu.
2nd Draft - Chilwell is a wait and see a bit longer for me. No jesus is a risk. Madds and Odegaard is also interesting. I'd probably swap them two for 4.5 and Marty and then get Jesus in instead. That said I have a 5-4-1 atm with Son instead of Haaland.

skipped to the end of it to see thwir teams, surprised to see Mark go Salahless, but totally agree with his reasoning, i too have simply grown to hate owning him as i get minimum benefit from owning him, and capping him out of fear just isn't fun, gw 26 last year i TC him like everyone else got 117pts that week and a massive red arrow, that says it all really

Best 5.0 and under Defender (already have Dalot)? Will start most matches as 4th defender in my 4-4-2:

    A) Coady
    B) Dier
    C) Doherty
    D) Trippier
    E) Walker
    F) Guehi
    G) Jonny

KDB in a vacuum. But if you have Salah, I think it’s better/more flexible structure to have a premium fwd over a second premium mid.

With regret. Kane over Son to start, as I feel several 8.0 mids can outscore any 7.5 fwds. If enabling fwd emerges, may get Son.

              Kane | Jesus

              Steele | Andreas | Neco | 4.5

              0.5 ITB

Torn between 3 drafts. Slightly leaning towards C which offers more flexibility and I'll have 0.5 itb. Which is the best to go for?

    A. The Maddison/Neco draft (442)

    Ederson
    TAA Robertson Cancelo Trippier
    Salah Maddison Neto Bailey
    Kane Jesus

    Ward, Neco, Andreas, Greenwood

    B. The Martinelli/James draft (532)

    Ederson
    TAA Robertson Cancelo Trippier James
    Salah Martinelli Neto
    Kane Jesus

    Ward, Bailey, Andreas, Greenwood

    C. The No Cancelo draft with 0.5itb

    Ederson
    TAA Robertson Walker Trippier
    Salah Maddison Martinelli Neto
    Kane Jesus

    Ward, White/Saliba, Andreas, Greenwood

Will want to bench Neto and Trippier for gw3 so the 1st 2 subs will most likely come in for that gw

    Tried building a templated but differential team and have this;

    Mendy
    Trent, Robbo, Cancelo, Chilwell, Perisic
    Diaz, Son, Grealish, Martinelli
    Haaland

    Gazzaniga, Taylor, Greenwood, Andreas

    Pros;
Entire XI play for last years top 5 and can play basically any fixture and score points
Cover Liverpool, City and Spurs attack
Cover Liverpool, City, Chelsea and Spurs defence
    Bench has two(?) cheap starters.

    Cons;
    Chelsea form
    Haaland minutes
Entire bench is 4.5 or less
    No Salah

    Notes;
Not fussed about "potential" Grealish/Martinelli rotation. Think they both start but even if they don't five sub rule will work in their favour against tired defences.

    Questions;
Do I swap Son & Haaland to KDB & Kane?
Do I downgrade Chilwell to upgrade my bench (given Chelsea's form)?

    1. House Frey Wedding Planner

When I saw the name I was interested to see the team.
      I think it’s decent.
For 3 perms it’s a bit different due to no Cancelo which allows the Cout punt. Maybe he is just good fresh like when he first came in before he tailed off. Best of luck.

Oh man been working too many hours only downtime is here 🙂
Kinda the same point but it’s 3 city and 2 pool.
Going 2 city defenders and one attacker seems smart to me. Even with some leaving KDB and Haaland are the only somewhat safe pick. Even then Haaland his minutes will be managed to reduce injury it’s pretty much in his contract from what I understand.
What I am trying to say is I prefer 3 pool over 3 city and you don’t have Robbo or Diaz but if you go 3 city and 2 pool I agree it should be with 2 city defenders. And to be honest I don’t see how you go 3 of each in that team.

But big at the back can just be 3 very good ones. 200 is an amazing ceiling for defenders at the price. But even now only a handful can achieve it - maybe not 4 or 5 so I am not totally against it you just have some punts that need to work.

Odegaard nailed? Think he can have a big season. Can he justify the 6.5 with enough goals, probably relies on assists I guess

I think he should be a good option. The big question would be whether Martinelli is better?

the midfield is quite congested at Arsenal if they play two up top from time to time - expect limited minutes and early substitutions for them all in midfield

More nailed than anyone else in the Arsenal midfield. Vieira can cover him, but I'd expect Ode to play the vast majority.

For the first 2 -3 games what looks the best here?

    A. Ait Nourri + Martinelli
    B. Gabriel + Neto
    C. Ederson + Bailey

    Thanks

A, is what I am leaning to, but concerned over Wolves.

A lot of games lacking goals start of last season from what I remember. I would be more concerned about the attack than the defence. You are looking for CS with Ait attacking points are a bonus.

Not sure who else at 4.5M would be a good choice, already got Trippier and already have double Arsenal.

Don't fear triple Arsenal for the first few. Saliba is well under the radar.

Yeah perhaps I should do you thin an Arsenal defender would be better than Wolves for the first 3-4 games?

Is Saliba considered as nailed though?

                Thanks

I think Wolves have great opening fixtures and could get plenty clean sheets. But I see Wolves as overall going backwards whereas Arsenal are progressing. Also Arsenal look good for 8 GWs whereas Wolves conk out after 6 (plus you'd not want to face Spurs).
Saliba nailed? GW1 he is because White will cover RB with Tomiyasu out. I think if Saliba does well, he keeps his place. But it is a risk.
