Gameweek 1 of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) gets underway this time next week and one of the main sources of debate among FPL managers each and every week will be over Manchester City’s line-up.

It’s been a summer of change at the Etihad, with Erling Haaland arriving but some big-name players exiting.

Long-time Fantasy Football Scout user middyjim – aka the excellent @City_Tactics account – talks us through the tactical tweaks that Pep Guardiola might make this season.

‘You have to shake. You have to move. With the same guys it’s almost impossible.’ – Pep Guardiola, May 2021

Manchester City did try to add to their ranks in the months that followed the above quote but advances for Harry Kane (£11.5m) were rebuffed and the only major changes saw the arrival of Jack Grealish (£7.0m) and the departure of Sergio Agüero.

A year later, City shook.

Out have gone Fernandinho, Raheem Sterling (£10.0m), Gabriel Jesus (£8.0m) and Oleksandr Zinchenko (£5.0m), with over a quarter of a century’s service between them, replaced by Kalvin Phillips (£5.0m), Erling Haaland (£11.5m) and Julián Álvarez (£6.5m). A left-back is seemingly imminent too, whether it’s Marc Cucurella (£5.0m) or otherwise.

How could this affect City’s tactical set-up and approach? Here are some potential changes we could see.

A Double Pivot

Guardiola has generally deployed a 4-3-3 since arriving in the north west, with two number 8s providing the creative flair in midfield. But in the second half of last season, City began to use a version of the 4-2-3-1 in some matches, with Ilkay Gündoğan (£7.5m) or Bernardo Silva (£7.0m) sitting in next to Rodri (£6.0m). It helps City in the build-up, adding an extra technical player, and it was usually deployed against teams who pressed high.

When the opponent presses they have an extra man to pick up deep in City’s midfield and spaces open up behind them for Kevin De Bruyne (£12.0m) to drift into. The champions’ full-backs can hold width and are given more licence to push forward.

City build with a Rodri and Gündoğan double pivot and wide full-backs, allowing De Bruyne to push high at Molineux in May

When City press in a 4-4-2, De Bruyne joins the front man in the initial press. Allied to a double pivot in the build-up, it results in De Bruyne playing higher up the pitch, where he’s more dangerous.

Haaland and De Bruyne form the first line of the press vs Bayern Munich with Bernardo and Rodri sitting in midfield

De Bruyne’s returns in the second half of last season speak for themselves. Notably, his re-introduction to the team, after fitness issues in mid-December, brought Bernardo’s hot streak to a swift conclusion.

  • Potential Winners: De Bruyne, Cancelo, Walker, new left-back
  • Potential Losers: Gündoğan, Bernardo

Quicker Transitions

If you’ve signed a Tremendous Nordic Meat Shield, it would be remiss not to utilise his freakish physical prowess. Haaland’s speed and intelligence in transition has led to a glut of goals in the Bundesliga.

That isn’t a natural fit for Guardiola’s side, who have developed into a patient, metronomic team where control is King. The swashbuckling days of Sterling and Leroy Sane bombing down the wings are long gone. City’s play is slower and more precise.

But now the Citizens not only have one of the world’s most lethal attackers in transition, they also possess a player with an unparalleled combination of on-ball running power and passing range to orchestrate them in De Bruyne. It seems likely that Guardiola will try to take advantage by introducing quick transitions when City win the ball back deep. Keep an eye out for De Bruyne staying high out of possession, almost taking up ‘false nine’ positions, with Haaland stalking the channels looking to get in behind.

Belgium used De Bruyne like this in transitions in Euro 2020. Playing high but dropping off the centre-backs to feed Lukaku in the channels

  • Potential Winners: Haaland, De Bruyne

Overlapping Full-Backs

Sterling is the luckiest player ever. Guy has zero ability except pace and deserves to play at some Bristol City or Coventry.

he is poor technically but his movement and know how to be in the right position for tap ins is one of the best in the world and it comes from Pep and his team drilling that into him. Sounds so simple but not many players have that ability to be at the right place the right time

Yes, I would agree for positioning. But he wouldn't be there without Pep. Not even in top 80 wingers in the world for me, but he thinks for himself that he is class lol

Yep, without pep he would be average at best. As a winger he's terrible as he very rarely beats his man and his finishing from outside the 6 yard box can be poor. However, his positioning got him so many goals. Will be interesting to see how he does at chelsea, I think his all round play has improved but he needs service in the right areas if he's going to get goals

Been thinking that. People dropping Chelsea defence but saying the (arguably) third best team with one of the best attacking duos in prem history won't score goals against them. Its like the arguments have been made in total isolation from eachother

Chelsea have good away fixtures but horrible home fixtures. Won't get clean sheets more than 4 times in first 8 gameweeks but could get less than 4 as well.

I was always pretty keen on him after how he ended the season. Hoping TAA Robertson Diaz along with a heavy hitting differential like KDB can beat not owning Salah.

Thoughts on this? Three premiums without Salah
Yes, I know it's risky to go without him.

    Raya
    Trent Cancelo Zinch Trippier
    Son Diaz Martinelli Bailey
    Kane Haaland

    (Lis Andreas Neco Plange)

Son could be KDB, or become KDB GW2.

Dont get me wrong, but to be honest i am speechless 🙂
The point of 3 premimus is to secure Salah.
If you dont have Salah, everything is about balance. And now you dont have Salah, neither do you have balance

            Totally get your point.
But City and Spurs rotate very nice with captaincy. I'd have a double up from one of them each GW while not wanting to captain Salah.
Could easily downgrade one of the strikers to Jesus and upgrade Bailey if needed.

You are right...they are rotate very nice with captaincy, so there is no need to double them. Insted of that- get Salah.
If you think about it, you cant tell me that there is no space for Salah in team with 3 premiums

First half thoughts from the Chelsea match vs. Udinese:

    - Interplay between Sterling, Mount & Havertz was good at times.

    - As Havertz tends to do, he drops a bit deep on the right side to retrieve the ball & play it in/lay it off. Mount & Sterling are switched on enough to get in the right potions

    - Sterling was pretty direct with the ball, played some nice balls and got into the right spaces. His movement for his goals was good to get in behind the defence - but the goal itself was classic Sterling. Bound to get some returns but also bound to frustrate.

    - Not too much to comment on Mount of yet. Same sort of performance as you'd expect.

    - Wing-backs: I'm not sure if it's purely because it's Udinese instead of another team, and hence the tendency to play down the left, but Alonso was more advanced than James & got into more central positions liked Alonso suaully does. The ball movement on the right seemed to get a bit stuck and James hasn't really had the freedom to get into the box so far (couple of times tried, but ball held up) - but one to monitor.

    - Kante with an uncharacteristic, clinical finish from outside the box!

    - Defensively we haven't actually been too troubled, just another one of those silly lapses in concentration. Koulibaly made a nice tackle.

    Plenty more to come...

Good stuff. Also watching, and my central takeaway is that Koulibaly is a fit replacement for Rudiger.

I guess people can make of that what they will - I would say, disregard that 0-4 Arsenal result as BK... Before Koulibaly.

Thinking about downgrading either Kane or haaland so can upgrade a mid to mount

    Sanchez (4.0)
    TAA Cancelo Gabriel Trippier (N.Williams)
    Salah Bruno Martinelli Lingard (Andreas)
    Kane Haaland (Archer)

    Appreciate your thoughts!
