Gameweek 1 of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) gets underway this time next week and one of the main sources of debate among FPL managers each and every week will be over Manchester City’s line-up.

It’s been a summer of change at the Etihad, with Erling Haaland arriving but some big-name players exiting.

Long-time Fantasy Football Scout user middyjim – aka the excellent @City_Tactics account – talks us through the tactical tweaks that Pep Guardiola might make this season.

‘You have to shake. You have to move. With the same guys it’s almost impossible.’ – Pep Guardiola, May 2021

Manchester City did try to add to their ranks in the months that followed the above quote but advances for Harry Kane (£11.5m) were rebuffed and the only major changes saw the arrival of Jack Grealish (£7.0m) and the departure of Sergio Agüero.

A year later, City shook.

Out have gone Fernandinho, Raheem Sterling (£10.0m), Gabriel Jesus (£8.0m) and Oleksandr Zinchenko (£5.0m), with over a quarter of a century’s service between them, replaced by Kalvin Phillips (£5.0m), Erling Haaland (£11.5m) and Julián Álvarez (£6.5m). A left-back is seemingly imminent too, whether it’s Marc Cucurella (£5.0m) or otherwise.

How could this affect City’s tactical set-up and approach? Here are some potential changes we could see.

A Double Pivot

Guardiola has generally deployed a 4-3-3 since arriving in the north west, with two number 8s providing the creative flair in midfield. But in the second half of last season, City began to use a version of the 4-2-3-1 in some matches, with Ilkay Gündoğan (£7.5m) or Bernardo Silva (£7.0m) sitting in next to Rodri (£6.0m). It helps City in the build-up, adding an extra technical player, and it was usually deployed against teams who pressed high.

When the opponent presses they have an extra man to pick up deep in City’s midfield and spaces open up behind them for Kevin De Bruyne (£12.0m) to drift into. The champions’ full-backs can hold width and are given more licence to push forward.

City build with a Rodri and Gündoğan double pivot and wide full-backs, allowing De Bruyne to push high at Molineux in May

When City press in a 4-4-2, De Bruyne joins the front man in the initial press. Allied to a double pivot in the build-up, it results in De Bruyne playing higher up the pitch, where he’s more dangerous.

Haaland and De Bruyne form the first line of the press vs Bayern Munich with Bernardo and Rodri sitting in midfield

De Bruyne’s returns in the second half of last season speak for themselves. Notably, his re-introduction to the team, after fitness issues in mid-December, brought Bernardo’s hot streak to a swift conclusion.

  • Potential Winners: De Bruyne, Cancelo, Walker, new left-back
  • Potential Losers: Gündoğan, Bernardo

Quicker Transitions

If you’ve signed a Tremendous Nordic Meat Shield, it would be remiss not to utilise his freakish physical prowess. Haaland’s speed and intelligence in transition has led to a glut of goals in the Bundesliga.

That isn’t a natural fit for Guardiola’s side, who have developed into a patient, metronomic team where control is King. The swashbuckling days of Sterling and Leroy Sane bombing down the wings are long gone. City’s play is slower and more precise.

But now the Citizens not only have one of the world’s most lethal attackers in transition, they also possess a player with an unparalleled combination of on-ball running power and passing range to orchestrate them in De Bruyne. It seems likely that Guardiola will try to take advantage by introducing quick transitions when City win the ball back deep. Keep an eye out for De Bruyne staying high out of possession, almost taking up ‘false nine’ positions, with Haaland stalking the channels looking to get in behind.

Belgium used De Bruyne like this in transitions in Euro 2020. Playing high but dropping off the centre-backs to feed Lukaku in the channels

  • Potential Winners: Haaland, De Bruyne

I would guess he'll be good for something around 140 to 150. Can't see it being more than that

Do you guys have a good system to minimise time spent on fpl for the season ahead while still maximising good decisions? For example only checking a certain website, youtube channel or setting aside a certain window in the week to work on your team.

I found myself consuming far too much content last season and was on this site several times a day. It impacted on my work and mental health more than it should’ve to be honest and it took away from my enjoyment of the game. Would like to change that this season!

I only really listen to content on the commute to work. I can't listen to it while working as it makes ypu think too much. In terms of mental health, just remember the bad weeks go very quickly and don't live long in the memory, i find i get far too annoyed when it is a game with a lot of luck/chance involved

Listen to the podcast's when commuting. Have a quick look on here at lunch, for any interesting articles. If not, leave it. Check again, day before transfer deadline. If I've a transfer in mind, keep an eye on price change predictions.

Main thing, as always. Get next week's team/captain sorted as soon as I can, to make sure I don't miss a deadline. That one's a fecker.

I don't watch any Youtubers or listen to any podcasts myself. I do use Twitter but most FPL-related accounts I follow are ones that don't post constantly but when they do it's often stuff that's data-related and helpful (like Ted or Chase, for example). I don't really use Twitter for anything FPL-centric apart from some accounts like these that post stuff that I find thought-provoking and often for football in general rather than just FPL (also follow a few accounts that mostly post jokes and don't seem to take themselves seriously much). Other than that all the accounts I follow are general football news or just related to other stuff like gaming.

Agree with Mr. O'Connell above too, I don't pay attention to live rankings, I don't see the point mid-GW, just going to agonise over every little thing and ruin any enjoyment from football that you might otherwise get. I like FPL but above all I enjoy football and watching it and I don't want to get to a point where FPL takes precedent over that. I see a lot of people here often saying that and if that ever happens to me, I hope I'll have the sense to drop FPL. Just a game after all.

Cheers for the input, i’ll check out those accounts! I think youtube is dangerous because of the amount of uploads/clickbait videos and algorithms that draw you into following more channels. Sticking to a couple of twitter accounts could resolve that.

Last season FPL was dangerously close to taking precedent over actual football for me hence why i’m determined to make a change now to ensure that this doesn’t happen. It’s such a good game but it’s almost like a drug - devilish!

He plays deeper than Maddison but consistently gets into the action in the attack. He's much better than people are giving him credit for IMO, and has been on a nice career track, still quite young. Think he's gonna really blossom. Maybe I am a year early, but for 5m, I trust him more than Bailey. A bad run of form for him and Gerrard go easily flip back to using Watkins and Ings together, or just about any formation you could want that doesnt include Bailye, a la pretty much all of last season.

            Indeed, on and off.

He had a run in the squad Weeks 25-35, didnt really break through.

I mean I get it, he was a major young talent signing for Villa and the hope is there that he develops into an influential player, starting most games.

I don't give anyone grief for going with him. Villa have two nice opening fixtures, so there's some added reason to punt on him, but the bigger point I want to make is the lack of love for KDH. The community will come around eventually...They always do 🙂

Not sure abouf Kova as an option without Lukaku. I noticed last season Lukaku was holding up play for Kova to make runs into the box but without a target man, he's usually lingering outside the box to recycle possession.

Hi there, how does this look for a first draft:

    Mendy
    TAA Castagne Kilman Cancelo Digne
    Salah Luis Diaz Coutinho
    Haaland Jesus

    Sanchez Bissouma Dendoncker Stansfield (4.5)

Does Coutinho start ahead of Buendia (or both)?

Different, but if you’re going 5atb i’d expect a stronger defence

        Interesting, any suggestions?
Who to discard, and replace with...
Salah, Luis Diaz, Haaland Jesus seem nailed (and the most expensive) so am unsure how to increase the £££.

Maybe Salah ---> KDB / Son and Castagne ---> Perisic?

Robertson at 7m is quite likely to outscore Diaz at 8m. Arsenal have great fixtures so downgrading Coutinho to Martinelli would also free up funds and allow you to move to Trippier/Zinchenko.

Martinelli not nailed, but probably the best of a bad bunch
Rashford not nailed, playing for utd and had a terrible season
    Neto playing for toothless Wolves

agreed, but at least with the 3 premium teams you can prioritise your transfers on the cheap enablers and increase the ppg of those positions, but yeah i don't like those team structures tbh

I totally agree on Neto. The only attacking addition Wolves have from last season is a healthy Neto returning. I'm not saying he's garbage, but is he allone gonna suddenly jumpstart an otherwise same side that struggled to squeak out one goal a game?

Add in a crocked Jimenez for two months.

I think FPL went live, we saw WOL's fixtures, we saw Neto at a nice price point and just made minds up too fast he was a clear cut option. I dont think so. Wolves Wingback for me. I trust the defense more and there's a bit of hope for an odd attacking return here or there.

And they're playing a more attacking 4-3-3. Which is worse for an already horrible defence that was only keeping clean sheets due to Sa's heroics or luck.

Had a decent pre season and there’s an easy swap to Bailey if he doesn’t work out. Of course there’s a risk that Bailey doesn’t hit the ground running either but the chances that both flop are unlikely imo
