The FFS Pro Pundits 40

When Neale asked me to do an article about Brighton assets, I jumped at the chance. No way am I going to miss the opportunity to wax lyrical about Roberto De Zerbi’s army.

What a season it’s been as a Brighton fan. When Graham Potter left just after we took Leicester City to the cleaners 5-2 back in Gameweek 6, I feared for us. It wasn’t just Potter leaving mid-season, it was the complete gutting of our backroom team, with five key personnel leaving with him. While I completely expect backroom staff to join a departing manager, losing club legend Bruno was a knife to the heart. Bruno is one of my all-time favourite Brighton players, he captained us to promotion from the Championship, had a mural in the heart of Brighton (google ‘El Capitano mural‘) and was just the best leader and inspiration to the whole team. Potter did a great job for us but didn’t have the legendary status that Bruno had, and without sounding too dramatic, it really did hurt.

But those days are gone and De Zerbi was hired. I was impressed with the work he’d done at Sassuolo and his appointment seemed an exciting signing, one that could build on the foundations set by Potter. His regime got off to a bit of a rocky start – the 3-3 draw with Liverpool was overseen by interim manager Crofts – and we picked up just one point in four games (a frustrating 0-0 draw with Nottingham Forest that I attended with my entire family… fun!). However, we looked decent in games and the signs were that results would start to improve.

And wow, did they improve! Taking on Potter’s Chelsea at the Amex and winning 4-1 has to be one of the best results, due to the context, I have ever witnessed as a fan. Every single player put in an outstanding performance and set down a real marker of where Brighton want to be this season. Since then, a disappointing result to Aston Villa is the only blip, with big wins against Wolverhampton Wanderers, Southampton and Everton showcasing further excellent performances. Even our loss against Arsenal saw some brilliant attacking play against the best defence in the league.

So what does Brighton’s upturn in form mean for us as FPL managers?

Spurs v City next week only going ahead if Spurs and City avoid a draw in FA Cup this weekend. Spurs have done their part but City don't play until tomorrow against Chelsea

Never understood why everyone overcomplicates fpl. Just follow the developing template (which is the template for a reason) including captaincy, try to avoid unnecessary hits and plan ahead with an awareness of upcoming fixture turns. Not the most exciting style but effective.

They're the nailed combo. Pep only dropped Akanji for a failed experiment vs Chelsea, and corrected it at halftime

They're the preferred pair. Laporte and Dias have been benched for them recently. If they're dropped, it's a KDB-like rest or another experiment. Possible because it's Pep, but not likely

        Getting him to bench Mitrovic

I've accepted "bench headache" as a rare FPL luxury this season

We have that often in other fantasy games like Eliteserien, where a top striker can come in for 5.0m because nobody expected his explosion... I mean, Kane was once 4.5m in FPL

I don't like the idea of keeping my bench full of duds and avoiding rotating players just because of the pain of missing hauls. Remember that a benched player *can* come on if something happens to your player. For instance, I subbed White on for Robbo last-minute because of the team leaks

Also, consider BB23. Stuff of dreams

      Absolutely nought

If there's no other source of the 0.3m, let this one slide, unless you have to play Andreas this GW

Until Dalot’s knock post WC he would have been ahead of Shaw in most peoples teams tho, plus he’s 8th in the ICT index and Shaw is 21st

Shaw wasn't nailed for a while. That's why. ICT index counts the whole season, not "per 90"

Once Shaw came back to the starting XI, he started racking up bonus points and attacking returns. Dalot spent all that time in our consciousness on the one assist

Yeah that’s fair enough man. My other option is to knock White (who is usually a bench player for me anyway now) back to a 4.5, or just Ward to a 3.9 as I play Kepa pretty much every week anyway

I still think you might benefit from a more straightforward move, line Andreas to Summerville

You don't need to downgrade anywhere else for this move

Mitoma and Gross are the most appealing ones for me. Mitoma has better NPxGI per 90 than Gross, but Gross more likely to play a full 90.

He was pretty bad for England against Germany. Fumbled a shot to gift Havertz a goal and was shaky in possession.

Pickford is class, and will get a big move soon, probably to Spurs.

It seems Howe is one of the few managers playing something close to a second XI in the Cup this week

Among the usual suspects, only Joelinton and The Botman start

Wilson and Pope not even in the squad

    3.9 ITB , 2FT

    Kepa (ward)
    Tripps Cancelo white (Neco) (James)
    Marty Rashy KDB Almiron (Andreas)
    Haaland Havertz Mitro

Struggling what to prioritise transfer wise here, need to use one on defence (probably James > botman) then I’m torn between
    A) Cancelo > another defender
    B) ward > Sanchez/Raya
    C) Mitro > Kane/Toney
    D) Andreas > Mitoma

    Other suggestions welcome 🙂

The players who won't start are always priorities. Even higher priority for injured ones

So, James truly must go first. Cancelo and Neco too, but we'll prioritise putting out a competent XI for each GW as we replace 'em

Havertz is the non-emergency exit, as he's taking up Kane's spot in your team. Still, not a priority exit vs Palace. But get Kane vs Fulham. Andreas can stay benched for now, as we have to address emergencies first

      1. Ze_Austin
        • 7 Years
        3 years, 6 months ago

        GW20: Cancelo + James > Schär + Stones
        Subs: White, Andreas, Neco

GW21: Havertz to Kane locked in. Andreas to Mitoma for a hit if he gets a double

        GW22: Bueno to Shaw

GW23: Ward to Ramsdale and consider bench boost

      2. Spiceyduck
        • 3 Years

Great analysis and very insightful opinion! Thank you!

So… replace James with botman + Cancelo > akanji/stones for the double would be priority for this week? Or would you just do botman and bench cancelo + roll a transfer to see what happens.

Schär over Botman. I know he's on 4 YCs, but your bench will easily cover a suspension. The goal threat is worth it. 4 *times* higher than the next Newcastle defender. Top of the league among defenders as a whole

I understand his choice here. Keeping the core of his team safe from injury as they chase a Champions League spot will probably mean a lot more to the club as a whole than progress in a knockout tournament where they can still get shafted by City later

Great news, that. I have this idea of Isak - Wilson - Almiron as the front three, because I haven't seen anybody really impress at LW for them

Just a hunch, as Wilson and Isak haven't been fit at the same time

Just glad Trippier will get more assists anyway

Could be Almiron - Wilson - Isak if all fit, though Joelinton and Willock have been playing well and interchanging on the left side of midfield and attack.

I’m doing Salah to kdb for the double

        Mitro to Toney -4

        1. Ze_Austin
          • 7 Years

Take any two of KDB's last 4 matches and combine them as a double. That's a max of 5 points. Not worth a transfer until his form improves. Hold Salah and take his possible DGW21 or just see how things unfold for the next few GWs with Gakpo and (possibly) Firmino

I think you can roll FT and just cap Haaland

    Advice please

Want to do Havertz to Kane this week. To find the additional funds I have 3 options
    1, Ederson to 4.6m keeper
    2. Dunk to Lewis (Mann City 3.9m)
    3. Almiron to Mitoma

    Squad

    Ederson Ward
    Gabriel Shaw Trippier Dunk Bueno
    Salah Rashford Martinelli Akmiron Andreas
    Haaland Darwin Havertz

3.1m in the bank and 1FT but happy to take a hit - any ideas

1 & 2 both look fine. If you don't mind losing Ederson's doubles, I think Raya is going to outscore him long term (maybe not even much in it this week). Dunk also seems disposable given that Brighton always seem to leave themselves open enough to concede 1 at the moment. I love Mitoma but losing Almiron with such great fixtures coming seems more detrimental than 1 & 2.

Thanks for your thoughts - the problem is I'd need to do those moves tonight where as I could leave option 3 until later in the week - Kane going up tonight is a nightmare. I'm leaning more to option 2

    3. Ze_Austin
      • 7 Years
      3 years, 6 months ago

I'd roll instead. This hit is not guaranteed to lead to more points, especially because of the opponents for both the guys you're buying and guy's you're selling

Ignore the DGW. Take Havertz up top vs the struggling Palace and then get Kane vs Fulham with 2 FTs. You have a great GW20 team already

Thanks Ze - I'm finding it hard to roll as I'm losing rank weekly for not having Kane. Also really tempted by Mitoma before everyone gets him in.
I could do Darwin to Kane without a hit but I really want a front 3 of Haaland Kane and Darwin
