Ahead of Manchester City v Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur v Manchester United, two-time Indian FPL champion Lateriser discusses whether meetings between two big sides should stop being labelled as ‘tough’ for attackers.

The FFS Pro Pundits 34

A couple of weeks ago, when Zophar and I had our fellow Pro Pundit Pras on the FPL Wire podcast, we were discussing fixtures for a few teams and a thought came to my mind. The subconscious wiring in our head says that two big teams facing each other is a tough fixture for all but then, if we think about it, some of this season’s biggest results have occurred here:

  • Manchester City 6-3 Manchester United
  • Manchester City 4-2 Tottenham Hotspur
  • Manchester City 4-1 Liverpool
  • Liverpool 2-2 Arsenal
  • Liverpool 7-0 Manchester United
  • Arsenal 3-2 Manchester United

These big games often see goals. We have more idealistic managers in our league than ever before. No longer do we have the likes of Jose Mourinho being pragmatic in a big game, sucking the life out of it – although I do love those games of chess, this is just me building a narrative!

We now have managers like Pep Guardiola, Mikel Arteta, Jurgen Klopp, Erik ten Hag and Roberto De Zerbi. More often than not, when teams managed by these gentlemen meet each other, it won’t be a bus-parking exercise.

The gloves are off and we’re talking prime Rocky Balboa versus Apollo Creed, where both teams are taking punch after punch. Theoretically, it makes sense to me. You’d think that all these elite attackers, though not getting as much control, definitely get more space in games like these and therefore they should be perceived as a good fixture for them.

For defenders, it’s different. Obviously, if the gloves (and robes) are off, we’ll see teams concede six and seven goals. Maybe our fixture ticker needs re-adjusting to this too.

EXPECTED GOALS IN BIG GAMES

Anyway, enough idealistic gobbledygook. It’s time to test if there’s any proof in the pudding. What better place to start than this season’s best two teams ahead of their midweek showdown at the Etihad Stadium?

    Bruno, Rashford, Mac allister, March
    Kane, Haaland (c), Watkins

    Raya, Saka, Shaw, Tarkowski

    1Ft 0.3 it

The plan was to roll and do Kane and Saka to Salah and Greenwood for free in GW34. I now want TAA as well now for GW34.

Next week I can do Kane, Saka and Tarkowski to Salah, Greenwood and TAA -4. I have the exact cash to do the move now. With Salah about to rise and Saka to drop I am going to be priced out.

Would you do Kane and Saka to Salah and Greenwood this week for a -4? Then Tarkowski to TAA in GW 34 for free?

    I'd really appreciate any suggestions.

    Salah. Saka. Martinelli Mitoma
    Haaland. Jota. Toney

    Ward. Andreas.Tarkowski. Bueno
    1.6m itb No chips left

    Which option and reason ?

Already transfered Kane out for Haaland

    1. No hit, reassess next gw, probably will need an extra hit for a -8 next week to bring in Rashford
and Grealish for Saka and Andreas

    2. Rashford in for Saka, - 4

    3. Grealish in for Saka , -4

    4. Grealish and Rashford in for Andreas and Saka, -8

This allows me the option of Transferring in Bruno for a -4 next generation by downgrading Toney OR just keeping Marti next week instead of Bruno or March

If I don't make this move this gw, 3 transfers required in 34 for same move, plus any other moves that may be wanted.

        All based on keeping Martinelli

If decided to sell Marti, price rises not an issue

Difficult to justify selling Marti even for a dgw Bruno, March, or even Rashford / Grealish

I'm just in from work and catching up on today's news. So Spurs have sacked their manager and replaced him with his assistant. Then sacked him and replaced him with his assistant.

It's a good thing there are only seven games left in the season, otherwise it would be the tea lady's turn soon.

Interesting most transferred out players ahead of GW33!

Kane - he's consistently delivering still (6 goals in last 6 games) and on track for his best ever season points total. 90 mins guaranteed pretty much. Maybe he funds Salah but Mo scored 1 more point last GW despite Liverpool scoring 3. Spurs generally a bit better at home, Man Utd played 120 mins in the cup.

Toney - similar to Kane, he's still a consistent scorer, scoring a goal every other game since GW23. Yellow card suspension threat is now gone. Think the red FDR on FPL is a bit generous for rating Lampard's Chelsea defence! I own Kepa and am expecting them to concede.

Saka - unusual for someone who just scored 13 points to be a most sold player. Maybe fair if you think City are a complete defence fortress but they do concede as Ederson owners would attest to.

Maddison - he's fit, Leicester look better and Leeds defence have been conceding for fun with over 3 big chances conceded per game recently. This is a must win game for both teams.

Feel like any of those can punish sellers. Will be quite an interesting GW!

I made my peace with Salah over Kane back in GW25 when I shipped Kane & Mahrez to Watkins & Salah. Kane is consistent, but I can't have them all.

Toney is good and I like his next few fixtures. I'm hoping the cheaper Isak can match him until the end of the season.

I'm holding Saka at the minute and deciding whether to sell in GW34 for a doubler.

Hasn't Maddison been punishing buyers for weeks?

        Great Summary

I had to sell Kane to get Haaland back in.

and Saka to Grealish to fund the move -4. But Martinelli starts.

I missed the Toney boat and sold for Kane after the double with the YC's and had to sell Maddison over Rashford for funds, wrong time to sell him this week if you held on for so long.
