    Good afternoon everyone!

From last season's stats (from fbref.com) I've made a spreadsheet of a small group of midfielders, for comparison, maybe it will be useful for someone making a decision. I might update it with a few more outliers, Jota, Richarlison, Havertz e.g., if you want that.

I've missed another 4.5m striker that left cos I changed my draft to a 343! That's Simms, the Brentford guy and now Surridge..

Any 4.5m strikers leaving their club so I can avoid a price drop?

Cheers Neale. Barnes vs. Gordon is going to be a very interesting competition down that left hand side of Newcastle this season. Who do you think will be first choice?

          • 10 Years

Howe usually likes to ease players in, but feel Barnes is a ready made Howe type of player. Preseason may give some more clues. Not clear where Gordon will fit in at the minute. Howe wasn't scared of replacing the whole front three with subs last season, so there may be managed minutes anyway to help keep the high press fresh.

Not at all, HP! It's a tricky one. Gordon can operate on either side so the long-term plan is perhaps mostly Gordon-Isak/Wilson-Barnes. But then Almiron and Murphy are seldom used on the left, so you've got an overload of right-wing options.

I think you're spot on with the managed minutes, especially when the UCL starts.

        1. The Mentaculus

Toying with the idea of Digne if Villa lineup with 3 CBs + LB who's more like a winger, but that's my least sure spot also. Otherwise its exactly the same! Hoping for futher clarity on Flekken during preseason otherwise I might try Johnstone to start with.

I won't have Trent - doesn't work with Salah for me & I think he's a bit overpriced relative to other defenders. Salah is almost a lock

Has anyone else here set up their team with an initial draft and then just done nothing else with it yet? Maybe it's more to do with my getting weary of FPL towards the end of last season but I'm just not really feeling it yet, and I guess I feel like constantly altering things with little information to go on with most teams as well as further comings and goings to happen is pretty fruitless

For me it's like a jigsaw and the pieces that demand most attention are the ones that don't quite fit.

I don't normally start so early, but i have time atm but no issues if starting a week or a day before is best for you.

      1. Nate(U)dog(ie)

That's the weird part for me, I actually have had decent periods of time but just haven't really had any desire to mess with stuff much, heck yesterday was the first day since the day I set up my team that I added anyone to my watchlist. I haven't even properly scoured the pre-season friendlies articles like I normally would

    3. ritzyd
      • 8 Years

Yep, made my initial draft then I like to read and absorb, have fiddled and played with the draft but it never gets saved. Will tinker properly after charity shield but find its useful to have my initial instinctive thoughts at front and centre when i start to build before deadline.

    4. The Mentaculus
      • 4 Years

Sort of. Haven't really changed my initial draft bar one defender. Certainly doing a lot less tinkering than at the equivalent stage of last (pre)season

    5. Hairy Potter
      • 10 Years

I try not to alter otherwise I end up tweaking here and there, and then end up with a team full of compromises rather than who actually want.

Did an initial 3-5-2 draft and changed it this week to a 3-4-3 one, but will probably not touch for a week.

Like every season, I won't even do my first draft until after the Community Shield - there is no actual benefit in doing any drafts before this, other than "something to do" (which is fine!), or for those who shout the most and/or loudest to have perceived knowledge/influence before the real game starts and they start doing badly (which we see year after year).

The trick is to tinker so much you have every player at some point in a draft. This way when the team you settle on inevitably does poorly you can at least claim you had X and Y player in and moan when they score so well.

Porro is more effective as a RWB but does look very shaky as a RB with more defensive responsibility. Royal is a better RB.

Would like to see Porro given a run as a right winger when Kulu is off the boil and if he does well then he could be a very good FPL asset.

But for now I'd steer clear from Porro until Ange has settled on his line up.

      Wispa could be gold.

I like it! One of the better TAA-less drafts I've seen. No second Arsenal attacker is the obvious stand-out to me, with the fixtures so good initially. Bowen a one-week punt? Not the greatest early run for West Ham.

Chilwell on your bench is the worst of both worlds. He either plays and hauls and you get nothing or he doesn’t play/gets injured and you’ve got a wasted bench spot

Or he just blanks against Liverpool and is a good option to play going forward rather than Estupinan or in the event of Stones/Foden rotation.

          • 11 Years

Both Chilwell and Estupinan are picks chosen for attacking output as much as clean sheet potential. You don’t want to bench them and if you are you’re wasting your budget.

I realise people play the game in different ways but I find min-maxing a better strategy at the start of the season. Depth comes in when there are multiple competitions and injuries racking up.

My strategy is to play the fixtures, particularly in defence. So even an Arsenal defender gets benched versus City, for example.

Interesting. I tend to just choose a medium term set and forget 3 with cover from cheapies if they’re playing a City for example.

I'm the same as andy, at the extreme end - if Bell is playing Sheff Utd (H) & Chilwell has City (a) i'd be happy to bench the pricier player for the cheaper player with the better fixture

Fair point, but for me I'm thinking of getting Chilwell and perhaps benching him GW1 rather than using a FT to buy him after GW1. If that means playing a 4.5 defender who I think does better in GW1 then I'm fine with that.

See for me that’s perfectly acceptable. I just wouldn’t have any defenders higher than 4.5 if they’re going to end up benched a lot.

Not ideal of course, but I need a 5.5 enabler. Please help me: Danjuma, McNeil, Andreas, Morris, Ndiaye, Enciso... who would you pick and why?

I’d probably go for Danjuma if he’s playing upfront which will probably happen unless they bring someone in. McNeil is a good shout too. Encisco all day long if he was nailed, which he isn’t going off last season.

I think you have to start with Enciso. He could get a good haul with only 20-30 mins in that fixture.

Easy switch to one of the others if need be.

I might punt on Morris if you have decent 4.5 def to cover him when needed. However, I can't compare him to Danjuma.

Having had a spot of time free the last few weeks, I find it quite astounding the number of podcast trotting out the same content, with the same teams over and over. The number of videos from those either arrogant enough or with no original thought rating peoples teams is too numerous to mention, but am guessing they are all chasing those views to make a fast buck and don't wont to miss out to other podcasters. These videos just finish up recommending the same players and go a long way to sucking the life out of the game.

Fantasy football can be enjoyable but after understanding a few simple principles and chips it is largely a game of luck and these podcast's rarely post anything unknown or original. Also the amount of looking down noses and snobby attitude towards those pesky "lesser engaged" managers is also laughable by podcasters who are pretty sad to spend so much time over a fantasy game.

      They coalesce quickly enough.

I also suspect that most outside of regular paid positions aren't making a 'fast buck' and it's more of a lifestyle choice if they're not working as well.

      Factos.
I find it bizarre how few of them actually discuss the football in depth, or at least touch on other fantasy games. The sheer volume of videos of someone sat in front of a screen just going through FPL teams, either their own or others online, comprising the same 20 players that we all have on here, is wild.

You would hope and expect that the FPL content game will self-cannibalise some point soon, if it hasn't already.

Much prefer those who actually discuss football, not just names and stats, explain their thought process and are also clear about any club bias. That's why I like the ones where there is a discussion between two or more people.

Even if I don't agree with their FPL picks, the discussion can be interesting depending on who it is. At least I understand why they have gone for player X over player Y, rather than someone saying just go X because they are.

It was always going to go this way. Just look at fantasy sports as industry in the states. Its big business. Personally if people can make a living out of it I don’t begrudge it. Not so keen on pushing gambling though but they have to live with that not me. Folks can choose to spend their money in whichever way they like.

I think the best way to play the game is to block all the noise out, watch the games week by week, pay attention to actual Premier league managers and formations, but have the courage to stand and fall by your own transfer decisions.

Sadly the FPL player pool is never going to be a massive amount of players, the FPL cream does always tend to rise to the top. However you can still get on and off the players at the right time - ideally with your own judgement - and get some reward from the game. I think I have become a victim of the noise and will try this season to do things 'my way'. I think failure is also easier to take this way as you cannot blame anyone else, plus success will be all the sweeter. And as you say so much luck involved and so many managers up their own backsides about how clever they are....

I've got into the habit of clicking "don't recommend channel" on 90% of FPL YouTubes that pop up on my home page. I'll follow 3 or 4 creators in the knowledge that all the rest are either regurgitating their content or punting nonsense to be 'edgy'.

Brentford v Brighton in 5 hours could be interesting line-up, keeper, performance-wise etc

Then Villa and Palace kick off in different games in 7 hours

As well as Chelsea v Newcastle at midnight followed by Man United v Real Madrid.

It's odd that most English teams are playing mostly other English teams.

    Guessing it's profile and $$$

Yeah, hopefully they are all not 45 mins for one half and 45 for the other. Would like to see a team field their strong side for at least 60 to be able to have some idea.
The Brighton keeper one is one I am watching. Thinking of it as I might BB. But I don't really see two good 4.5 keepers with good gw1 fixtures - besides Pickford and Steele. Both at home.
It might sound silly but if Steele is not likely starter for Brighton, I might not BB at all.

      A) PPM was 5.7 for Øde and 4.8

Wissa plays more centrally and was good enough without Toney. Small sample size so bit risky, Mbeumo on the other hand certainly isn't clinical finisher. He can hit the post though, so kind of accurate 😉

B is the template, so should be much more popular if you make a poll like that. But I at least sometimes know better and manage to beat the template 🙂 However not early in the season, but now is time for that to change. Martinelli and Saka over Øde for me.

Not 2. 4.5 3rd fodder could be acceptable, but only if you play 3-4-3 with 5 decent defenders. So depending on the rest of the team 3 or 1.
