      Backup

issue with Sanchez not good with the ball at feet but hopefully teams will evolve from playing at the back as counter-measures meaning more of a high press against this type - putting more pressure on Kepa can only be good

Laporte still ain't gone and now they added Gvardiol. Too much competition for places there, and none of them is an outstanding attacking threat. Stones even plays CDM, a position that loves yellows and hates scoring goals.

I really want to save 0.5m on my City defender.

Stones for 5.5m is good but if you can get an Ake, Walker or Akanji for 5.0m that extra 0.5m is really useful for picking up a differential like Jota.

Anyone interested in going for any of the City 5.0m defenders? - (big differentials too so if they score that is GW defining).

    2. Nate(U)dog(ie)
      • 5 Years
      3 years, 29 days ago

Ake would be the only one I'd be interested in personally. Yes Gvardiol will impact him but he'll take time to adjust (I think more time than most seem to) and Ake is versatile and can still play LB, wouldn't be surprised if at some point Pep used him as inverted either. He seemed to be a favourite of his last year, but the caveat of this (much like Stones) is that his favourites can change very quickly. Personally I don't like City's early fixtures defensively and think there'll be a few teething issues with Gundogan gone, possibly Walker gone, Phillips probably getting more time, Gvardiol coming in, etc. so I'm not going there anyway

Gvardiol has been signed for 90m. He will definitely play but yeah it's a question of how long will the bedding in period be and how rotation might hit.

I don't really like Estupinan very much because of Brighton's change in personnel. Reckon they could struggle to find rhythm early on.

        1. Pariße
          • 11 Years

Fofana was signed for 90, and he doesn't look like he's meant to play.

He's definitely been bought to play every week no doubt, I just think looking at how pretty much every player takes 1-2 years to settle at City (bar Dias and Haaland who were instantly brilliant) and how that 2nd leg of the City - Leipzig game went that he'll need time to get used to such a different game. I agree on Estupiñan too, he does have great attacking threat of course but I'm not convinced on Brighton's clean sheet potential like everyone else is

City defenders rarely play more than 2000 minutes over a season, so you'll need that .5 to get a 4.5 defender to cover for the city defender.

I guess it's subjective then. For me none of the city defenders are nailed to play more than 6 consecutive games, for you they seem to be. Not sure why you asked then.

            • 14 Years

I feel there's a fair chance Gvardiol starts pretty soon and threaten Ake's place. Whilst all the defenders will get generous rests and be dropped around 10 times in 38 games each, I have seen no pressing argument to swerve Akanji - he's simply ghosted around here.

Seems to be a (slight) consensus emerging that it'll be Steele, mainly on the basis of experience. But honestly, I don't trust this. Steele only made 1 PL start before last season & I wouldn't be at all surprised to see Verbruggen starting. This is why I'm considering Webster/Veltman for a few cheap CS to start

I think Steele will start based on experience and also preseason. Brighton conceded more goals with Verbruggen in nets so far. Steele hasn't really done anything wrong at all.

          • 5 Years

Mins have been shared pretty evenly I thought, and I don't think Verbruggen takes any blame for being part of the 10 men who conceded a bunch to Chelsea. And "experience" is precisely where I disagree - Steele has been a backup / Championship level GK his whole career.

Botman's time will come. Brentford have a nice run of 4 while the Toon play City & Liverpool in that time. I'm starting with Henry and moving to Botman after that, hopefully for 4.3. He's in almost 1 in 4 squads, so there's potential for a couple of drops before I want him.

Hmm. Timber at LB is possible, but Trossard and Partey will have something to say about Nketiah and Havertz starting.

      1. GreennRed
        • 14 Years
        3 years, 29 days ago

Trossard definitely. Can't see Partey having anything to say about Hazertz playing, assuming you mean Partey for Havertz, but all 4 will get some gametime.

        1. Pariße
          • 11 Years

I think we might see Rice in a lone pivot role as the inverted fullback is always there to his aid, so there’s not that much adaptation necessary.

That’s why I think Partey is in that mix, especially against smaller teams if Arteta prefers more attacking types.

    2. Saka Punch
      • 8 Years

Almost certain Rice doesn't displace Partey in the team - he's looked amazing in pre season. Rice or Havertz will start in the left 8 with Partey as the 6

Trossard for Nketiah likely too though that's hard to call

    3. Arteta

I would sell Cucurella just not done it for Chelsea

Personally would choose Maatsen who had a brilliant season at Burnley on loan last season as cover
with Hall another one for the future

I have Isak currently, but would prefer Watkins if I managed to find the extra 0.5m, especially after GW1.

Longterm Diaby can arise as his perfect substitute, since he's moderately priced and classified as a mid. But I still remember having Bailey last season, which turned out a nightmare. That being said, statistically and in reputation, Diaby is a better player than the Jamaican.

Wow Facaccia four very good picks hence the mid-field looks much more interesting than the forward
      with good prices at 6.5m

a - feel going to have a good season
c - at the moment due to ownership but keep eye on other two

A balancing act as at 12.5m a lot of money - has good track record but preseason seems to be assisting more than scoring which is a lot for the money - 1 goal/6 assists or to spread the cost in the team/squad with flexibility early doors with Bruno (8.5m) or Foden (7.5) with 4.0m or 4.5m to utilise

      1. Needo22
        • 11 Years
        3 years, 29 days ago

I keep seeing this argument, that he’s mainly assisting and therefore not worth 12.5. 6(!) assists and a goal in 4 games is ridiculous attacking output. Even if he hits 20 assists, which is a third of his pre-season rate, and maintains a goal every 4 games it’s still a 250pt season.

Good job there is a 5 dub rule almost now guarantee not to need your bench unless out with an injury.
Also try to pick the players who would more than likely play 90 mins . Be a lot of goals in last 10 mins as well I think .

Hopefully it'll allow for more freeflowing games with more physicality allowed. Will be plenty of feigning head injuries though, refs have to stop games if there's a chance of a head injury.

I still feel the head injuries would be less if defenders where allowed to jump naturally with the hands up - too scared to have the ball hit their hands to give a pen away & now more head injuries with clashes of heads

          1. GreennRed
            • 14 Years

That's genuine head injuries. I think though players will be holding their heads pretending to be injured just to break up opposition momentum. $hi+#ou$€ry at it's finest. Not just in football I'm, cynically, convinced there's people analysing rule changes and how to exploit them.

Remember 2 seasons ago when they brought in an automatic penalty for a fingernail brush? I wildcarded into a team full of penalty takers, only for the Refs Assocn to relax the rule the next week.

This time I foresee hundreds of cards in the first 2 weeks and then some sort of compromise to be reached. What will become the norm, however, is plenty 96th minute goals against tired defences. That means fewer CS from high-cost defenders and goals from fringe players like Archer and Mubama on as late subs.

Will help those with the bigger squads and managing minutes with players. Probably going to be a lot of 'player X against tired legs' comments.

Can't decide if it means punting on someone like a Darwin, Jota, Wilson, etc. is less of a risk now or not. Maybe more chance of attacking returns off the bench.

I think we can expect some fringe names like your Darwin, Jota, Wilson along with Foden, Enciso, Joao Pedro to get 30 mins against tiring defences even if they don't start.

Yeah agreed. Also wonder whether it will push back some of the timings of second half subs. Subs at 65 mins rather than 60 for example. With 5 subs it shouldn't change the positions that are subbed too much, but will have to wait and see.
