Is it weird that a Toney gets a ban for breaching betting rules and is immediately on-field captain?

    Legit question.

I feel there’s other sports where a ban like this would exclude you from leadership roles for a long time to forever, but I could just be overreacting here, clutching my pearls while yelling “won’t somebody please think of the children!” for no reason.

I think it’s ridiculous that he’s straight in as Captain, think he will get some serious stick from the opposition, will probably take time for him to settle in…

I doubt he'll be that concerned about abuse from the opposition. It feels like a bit of a statement from the manager to say he's not for sale

Doesn't worry me. He's paid for his transgressions. Turning over a new leaf and proving his mettle as captain is a solid path to redemption.

Can’t tell if this is sarcasm or snowflake-ness? He has an illness. Would you expect by having 8 months off work to preclude you from a leadership role

If it was 8 months for breaching the code of conduct - illness or not, the answer is resoundingly yes. At least in the short term.

Totally agree, he should have been banned for much longer. I don't ever want to see him play for England. I couldn't stand that CeO interview he did, where he pleaded ignorance. Disgrace!

      No

He’s served his time and he’s back. He’s a key member of the team and I don’t see anything wrong.

In fact the way he’s been treated is quite disgusting. In a position where someone admits to being addicted, you don’t isolate them away. You offer them a support programme, some education. Something to help them from falling into the same trap.

The fa handled this terribly and have shown inconsistencies in the way others are treated for a similar misconduct.

Also, the fa and the premier league want to punish people for betting but are happy to allow betting companies to sponsor their clubs. Toney will actually step onto the pitch with a shirt sponsored by Hollywood bets. You can’t make this up

Remember all those 90 minute yellow cards Toney used to get? He bet on himself to get booked in those.
He even placed bets on Brentford to lose.
I'm surprised how forgiving today's general supporters are.
"He's unwell" doesn't really wash with me.

I agree with a lot of what you are saying Bemba but there has to be rules and bans. Take the Tonali situation for instance, he was betting on games that he was involved in. What's to stop someone from match-fixing and then claiming a gambling addiction as defence? Where should the line be drawn of when they are and are not allowed to gamble?

Well thankfully I never had the misfortune to be employed by that sort of company. As a, functioning, alcoholic it was never held against me. Misconduct & illness can be mutually exclusive. And in Toney, and mine, that appears to be the case. His betting didn’t affect performance so why the “outrage” he is straight back as talisman/captain?

      1. Casual Player
        • 5 Years

Someone above said he bet on himself getting yellow cards? Does that not affect performance? And betting on Brentford losing…

I agree there’s a fine line between punishment and rehabilitation, which wider society usually gets wrong (how many people in jail are bad people, as opposed to addicts, victims of circumstance etc.).

          He didn't tho.

So perhaps don't read too much into what someone said above...

          It's a lie ...

The West Ham guy bet on a double yellow card orchestrated with a game in Spain or Italy.

This was sports betting on other games.

What YOU just said is wrong / lying,
I'm not sure why so many think this is the case.

He most certainly DID bet on his own team losing, though he didn't take part in the game himself.
He bet on himself to get YCs when he played.

The ban should have been much longer.

Mohamed Salah suffers a strain in his back muscle and will miss two matches in the African Nations

The x-rays that Mohamed Salah, the captain of the Egyptian national team, underwent, showed that he suffered a strain in the posterior muscle, and he will miss the team’s next two matches in the African Nations against Cape Verde, and then the round of 16 match in the event of qualification.

    Prognosis of a gluteal strain
With appropriate management, patients with minor gluteal strains can usually recover in one to three weeks. With larger tears, recovery may take four to six weeks or longer depending on the severity. In cases of a complete rupture of one of the gluteal muscles, surgery may be considered with intensive rehabilitation to follow. Return to sport or activity may then take 6 months or longer.

Yes, however athletes may sometimes need little bit more time since in games like football 97% healing just isn't enough. So Salah is out now and looks like we don't have to worry about getting him in too soon.
