ASTON VILLA: REASONS TO BE CHEERFUL

FPL notes: Watkins misfires, Sessegnon subbed + Tielemans stars

UCL BLOW – A BLESSING IN DISGUISE? / FORTRESS VILLA PARK

Aston Villa’s failure to qualify for the 2025/26 UEFA Champions League should, in theory, lead to a fresher first XI.

Of course, midweek matches in the UEFA Europa League still have to be factored in, but Unai Emery will have an opportunity to implement more rotation in this tournament, particularly during the League phase, which runs from September 24 to January 29.

Six of the eight matches that follow a European fixture will be played at home, too, where Villa are unbeaten in 18 Premier League games:

DEFENSIVE IMPROVEMENTS

Additionally, Emery made Villa much harder to beat towards the end of last season, recording six clean sheets in their final 10 matches. Their expected goals conceded (xGC) visibly dropped, too.

If they can take some of that newfound defensive resolve into the new campaign, it should serve them well.

Above: Aston Villa’s rolling six-match xGC average in 2024/25

ASTON VILLA: REASONS TO BE FEARFUL

Villa v Fulham team news: Robinson starts, Digne benched

SLOW TRANSFER WINDOW

A lack of new faces is a bit of a concern, particularly with Marcus Rashford, Marco Asensio and Axel Disasi no longer around.

The depth in attack looks especially thin, while right-back has been a problem position for quite some time now. Indeed, Villa conceded 127 key passes from that flank last season, compared to just 99 on the left.

PSR issues have at least been eased by the reported sale of the women’s team, but fans will be eager to see some positive transfer activity in the coming weeks.

On a positive note, it seems that Villa are close to finalising a deal for Nice’s versatile attacker, Evann Guessand.

Manchester United are getting Sesko according to Ornstein.

What price bracket would we think, £1m below gyokeres?

7m was the original Hojlund price.

He's 20% better but Man Utd are 20% worse than 2 years ago?

£7m would be a very attractive price if that was the case. I would imagine he would get priced similar to Solanke

Sesko won't be on pens and his attack returns are similar to JSL so I'd say around £7.0m would be reasonable.

Wow. Really? Man U looking super attractive this season. Still only got the dynamite kid Dorgu though. Who'll bench warm for a bit (acts as my man u attack too ha)

I've changed my strategy so no Dorgu anymore (FH2, BB3) also he might make the cut on my bench. Need to decide if he will play Dalot in the low block games which Everton, Burnley fall into. I expect him to play Fulham away for example.

Yeah? If I was man u's head coach I'd play Dorgu over Dalot any day. But I get your point

Oh definitely, it's just an energy sapping position and Yoro becomes the defacto nailed choice if you think the Burnley 6 points to be guaranteed.

Wouldn't the money have been better spent on a DM, with Bruno Mbeumo Cunha as a fluid front three?

The window's not done yet. Manchester United have named a leadership group of Bruno Fernandes, Harry Maguire, Lisandro Martinez, Diogo Dalot, Tom Heaton and Noussair Mazraoui. That to me suggests Casemiro is leaving. They may be waiting for a replacement before letting him go. There have been rumours of them after Barcelona's Fermin Lopez.

          Fair enough

I think Ugarte came in so late that he didn't get the chance to be properly integrated as a midfield anchor in preseason, so I wonder if that'll be a factor here again

Or maybe Ugarte grows into the role this season anyway, if he somehow finds the confidence

In the last two seasons, other than Aston Villa, we haven't lost to a big team in the PL. Don't know where this narrative comes from of not good opening fixtures, when Arsenal have been the best team against the bigger teams.

But for comparison, Arteta patiently built the defensive/midfield core first before finding the right attackers. I think all three United's new forwards are fine additions, but under ten Haag especially control and transition were causing them problems, hence it's likely they won't have the proper service and support. On the other hand, the roles that Cunha and Mbuemo (to add to Bruno) enjoyed in their former clubs, makes me question their pressing discipline.

      I agree.

I think I'm going for a 4.0 - 4.5 - 4.0 - 4.0 kind of bench structure and just hoping for around 8pts in GW2 when Burnley and Sunderland play each other. It's really not worth a single 0.5m of commitment.

Also thinking BB for GW2. Gets it done with minimum fuss, no FH, no WC. Bench of Guiu, Dubravka (assuming he goes to Burnley), Esteve and 4.5 might work...

      2. Ser Davos
        • 11 Years
        11 months, 16 days ago

yeah, I think you target GW1 and then some kind of early WC

I'd sooner put the time and research into building a "key-pick" strategy. Unearthing those picks that we can lock in.

    3. aapoman
      • 12 Years
      11 months, 16 days ago

Kind of agree. But I think in gw1 when you have unlimited transfers you can get a decent bench with paying maybe 1 - 1.5m over the minimum bench money so I just play it there and then focus all the funds on the starting 11

    4. Ze_Austin
      • 7 Years
      11 months, 16 days ago

      In non-AFCON seasons, yes

Those 5 extra FTs + Salah's absence make it an easy choice for me this season. Maybe with an early 2nd WC or accumulated FTs to redistribute funds when Salah returns

Even if I still don't fancy hefty BB prep by then (maybe because of Haaland's fixtures), I'd still play it randomly during AFCON

A beautiful poem by the great poet Sir James Hetsfieldspeare on this warm Wednesday afternoon:

All that is, was and will be
Universe much too big to see
    Time and space never ending
    Disturbing thoughts, questions pending
    Limitations of human understanding
    Too quick to criticize
    Obligation to survive
We hunger to be alive yeah
All that is, ever, ever was
    Will be ever
    Twisting, Turning
    Through the never
In the dark, see past our eyes
Pursuit of truth no matter where it lies
Gazing up to the breeze of the heavens
    On a quest, meaning, reason
Came to be, how it begun
All alone in the family of the sun
    Curiosity teasing everyone
On our home, third stone from the sun
All that is, ever, ever was
    Will be ever
    Twisting, Turning
    Through the never
    we must go
    (On through the never)
Out of the Edge of forever
We must go (on through the never)
    Then ever comes
All that is, ever, ever was
    Will be ever
    Twisting, Turning
    Who we are
    Ask forever
    Twisting Turning
    Through the never
    Never

No guarantees, but it's reported Sunderland will have to pay penalties if he doesn't play a minimum number of games - which probably makes him the most viable £4.5m forward option (for bench).

I think when they paid a big fee for the 26 year old in January, they saw him as a 1st team player. Malen is the 4th highest paid member of the club, paid more than Ollie Watkins. That to me says important player. The last minute loan signings really screwed him, but he always did well when he played, and has looked fantastic in pre-season.

I think I'm going to roll the dice on him for a bit of low risk fun. Lots of good pivot options if he fails.

Agree. Rodri is nailed as long as he's fit. Reindeer wasn't bought as back-up/replacement for him. More likely playing with him. City's pre-season secret sessions don't help. Need to see the line-up in Sicily.

"Alongside Rodri/Fernandinho" is probably Pep's most rotated position so far, and he's had some really good players there over the years

    Verbruggen
    Colwill, VVD, VDV, Wan Bissaka

I hear you I just think he gets both ends and defcon could work for him, so could the signing of a proper CF, hoping it’ll help him pick up some more assists like he did at West Ham.

What you think to Mitoma vs Rodri?

I'm on Gud, nailed at LB and Rodon may face a bit of competition. I am a Leeds fan and honestly see it being Rodon/Bijol as the CB pairing in all honesty so don't think there's too much risk.. But Struijk is going to get minutes at some point

I like it good structure to it but not sure about double forest attack. They’ve been poor attack wise in pre season. Wood to Solanke/Mateta/Pedro always an option. I prefer Watkins to start the season over Gyrokeres but that’s just a personal preference

Anyone able to explain the 3-5-2 preference that has emerged in the past couple of weeks? I’d much rather have a talismanic striker than a Kudus/Rice/Ndiaye pick? I’d even take Strand Larsen over those guys.

Pick the player playing highest up the pitch and occupying the box, surely. Wood/Evanilson/Larsen/Solanke all great options and by far my preference over their price comparators in midfield.

          Did you skip Guiu?

It gets easier to explain when you try to list < 7.0 strikers and mids though

JSL, Welbeck, question marks on everybody else

At 7.0, Semenyo and Rogers comfortably beat Evanilson for PPM

7.5 mids aren't popular. Their counterparts at CF are

I'm feeling a bit skeptical about most of those mid-priced strikers at the moment. Forest attack blanking in virtually every friendly, and doubt Wood will hit 20G again anyway. Solanke is injured. I guess Larsen did fine without Cunha but want to see if Arias/Lopez can fill the creativity void of players sold. Flirted with Evanilson but slightly unsure about Bournemouth preseason performances, no Kluivert, substantially weakened defence.

I still might play 343 with something like Watkins/Gyokeres/Mateta but not too sure yet; waiting on final Arsenal friendlies

Agree on most of that however Wood is worth a go with those fixtures and Watkins Bowen will always return well so it’s those three for me

CASEMIRO Averaged 14.5 DC per match last season!! 258 DCs in just 18 starts.. Mind blowing numbers.. If only he was a starter at 5.5, he would be almost guaranteed 150 points for the season.

    Feeling good about this team.

Attack is weak but tbh, I don't like any of the forwards anyway. Might as well just pick some starters with good fixtures and hope to nick a goal or two. Can WC early to hop on the right bandwagons and restructure maybe for Haaland.

Not sure I like this, especially having 2 attackers from generally two non attacking teams. We have similar structure, but I believe i managed to have a better looking team

      Sels
      Neco, Konsa, Van Hecke
      Salah, Palmer, Wirtz, Eze, Rogers
      Bowen, Mateta

      Petrović, Guiu, Konsa, Esteve

I don't think Bowen and Mateta are better than Wood and Beto by the budget you need to invest in them tbh. But it's your decision on which players to prioritize. You have 2 Konsa's in there. Who's the 2nd one? If it's Virgil it's good, if it's not, then I think the defense is too light and has no anchor.

        1. Silecro
          • 8 Years

Wood and Mateta are same price, and will probably get you same-ish amount of points, and then it comes to basically this: Virgil, Fernandes, Beto vs 4.5def, Eze, Bowen.
Bowen is significant upgrade on Beto, Eze vs Fernandes is I believe closer than people think and Virgil "should" be an upgrade over any 4.5 def, but that's about it

If you think Bowen is a significant upgrade on Beto then sure. I'm not convinced. He's 2.5m more expensive and West Ham aren't some attacking juggernaut. Fernandes is a lot better than Eze imo with the new scoring system and the new players they have to finish the chances he creates.

But hey, this is FPL, we each have our own opinions. I don't think yours are 'wrong' they're just different. Let's see whose takes are better after the first few weeks!

The front line is far too weak, I’ve come to the conclusion that with Salah and Palmer lock ins it’s only possible to have one other mid around the 8.5/9m price point so it’s Wirtz or Bruno down to a 6.5 and upgrade the forwards.

      1. Camzy
        • Fantasy Football Scout Member

Okay let's say I upgrade Beto. Who do you buy?

Solanke - injured preseason, Spurs have lost a lot of creativity
Bowen - decent but relatively expensive and could be PoO
Mateta - poor fixtures to start the season
Pedro - Chelsea haven't had much of a preseason, not nailed
Watkins - will he be at Villa? Good, but would be doubling up with Rogers and also is more expensive than the others which means I'd need to get a 5.5m mid.
Gyokeres - not nailed to start the season, not great opening fixtures

Who else is there worth upgrading to? I can't see value there. Fernandes on the other hand is nailed, on pens, benefits from DCs, and has better attackers to feed. I think the budget is better spent there and I can take a risk on the 5.5m forward from the likes of Beto, Piroe, Isidor, maybe Muniz someone like that.
