Ruben Amorim’s Man Utd take centre stage in our latest 2025/26 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) team preview.

Top FPL picks, a Gameweek 1 line-up prediction, fixture assessment, defensive contribution (DC) magnets and more – it’s all covered here.

MAN UTD: REASONS TO BE CHEERFUL

INCREASED FIREPOWER

FPL new signings: Does Mbeumo have less appeal at Man Utd? 4

Man Utd’s disastrous 2024/25 season ended with a 15th-placed domestic finish and defeat in the UEFA Europa League final.

In an attempt to improve matters, particularly the goals scored column, Bryan Mbeumo (£8.0m) and Matheus Cunha (£8.0m) were both signed earlier this summer, and now the club have agreed a deal with RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko.

Mbeumo and Cunha combined for 35 goals and 16 assists (Opta and Fantasy) in the Premier League last season.

They were admittedly two of the top expected goals (xG) overperformers, but they will certainly add something to United’s attack.

Bruno Fernandes (£9.0m), one of the Premier League’s top chance creators, is staying too.

NO EUROPEAN FOOTBALL

Ruben Amorim – Scout Report 1

United’s lack of European football in 2025/26 should help them in the Premier League.

Indeed, Ruben Amorim has already outlined the benefits of not playing in Europe by saying it will allow him to properly prepare his team each week.

It should hopefully lead to a more settled XI, as United look to bounce back.

“I have to say that for us not to be in the Champions League, could be an advantage to perform well, to perform better, to prepare better the games, to build that core we need for the future. So, I think it’s a good thing for us to take advantage.” – Ruben Amorim

MAN UTD: REASONS TO BE FEARFUL

2024-25 STRUGGLES / OLD TRAFFORD WOES

Man Utd v Brighton team news:

Last season was a total disaster for United.

They were beaten in 18 of their 38 Premier League matches, registered a negative goal difference (-10) and collected just 42 points, as they failed to adapt to Amorim’s 3-4-2-1 formation.

They were particularly poor at Old Trafford, with nine defeats in total.

Only the three relegated teams netted fewer home goals, too:

      I’m going c) I think, with N. Williams for Forest and O’Brien for Everton. Swerving Spurs mainly as I’m planning to BB GW2 and Spurs have a bad fixture then. Also going Richards, as picking 2 out of 3 from NFO, EVE and CRY each week looks to roatate well (with Esteve from BUR coming in occasionally)

    Thought I would take a look at DC points from a slightly different angle.

    I assume that players would only have got DC points in games that they started last season. So I take the number of games they scored DC points over the number of games they started, giving the percentage of games each player would have met the threshold. And then, for added reference, I give the number of extra points per start (pps) it would have worked out as.

    I did it for this selection of players here. I might go into further detail in the future. I took the DC date from this link that Manani shared with me earlier https://www.reddit.com/r/FantasyPL/comments/1m9q89j/midfielders_and_their_total_points_with_defensive/ If anyone knows of somewhere we can already see this for more players, it would be cool if you shared it.

    Caicedo = 21/38 (55%) = 1.11 pps
    Anderson = 18/33 (55%) = 1.09 pps
    Lerma = 14/26 (54%) = 1.08 pps
    Gomes = 18/35 (51%) = 1.03 pps
    Gana = 18/35 (51%) = 1.03 pps
    Baleba = 15/31 (48%) = 0.97 pps
    Andre = 13/31 (42%) = 0.84 pps
    Onana = 8/20 (40%) = 0.80 pps
    Fernandes = 11/35 (31%) = 0.63 pps
    Rice = 8/33 (24%) = 0.48 pps
    Ndiaye = 6/29 (21%) = 0.41 pps
    Paqueta = 5/27 (19%) = 0.37pps
    Enzo = 4/32 (13%) = 0.25 pps

    Any takeaways from this?

        I worry about Bruno this year, with the new signings I wonder if he’ll be asked to sit deeper, something I’m sure he’ll do well but won’t necessarily amount to the same points haul he had last year

      I did a little extra calculation for some of these players

      [DC points per start] + [clean sheet (points) per start] - [YC (points) per start] + 2 (appearance points)

      Assuming players only get YCs when they start games is obviously not ideal, but I couldn't be arsed to spend a lot of time on this.

      So here are the baseline pps for these players, excluding appearance points, before attacking returns and bonus points

      Anderson = 1.09+0.39-0.30 = 1.18 pps
      Caicedo 1.11+0.32-0.29 = 1.14 pps
      Baleba = 0.97+0.26-0.19 = 1.04 pps
      Fernandes = 0.63+0.29-0.09 = 0.83 pps
      Ndiaye = 0.41+0.52-0.10 = 0.83 pps
      Rice = 0.48+0.33-0.15 = 0.66 pps
      Enzo = 0.25+0.31-0.25 = 0.31 pps

      This cements Anderson as an appealing option. It also reaffirms my Baleba pick, given his lack of yellow cards compared to Caicedo and Anderson (and his lower price). Fernandes, Ndiaye and Rice benefit from fewer YCs than the DMs above them, though Fernandes' price demands he gets the vast majority of his points from attacking returns anyway. However, Rice and Ndiaye only look more appealing after this exercise, particularly Ndiaye if he's going to be bringing home plenty of additional CS points again (even more than his DC points).

      Of course, this is last season's data, and things will be different this coming season

        I said + 2 (appearance points)

        But ignore that. I excluded appearance points.

      Paqueta looked like he was being asked to track back more in pre-season so his xDC might be higher this season.

    Which combination to go for?

    A: Aina, Xhaka and Joao Pedro
    B: Murillo, Gakpo and Guiu

        Cheers. Guiu is just fodder. Forrest have great fixtures and Murillo great for DC points and on free kicks from lower half.

    From BBC
    There's a real question of how Chelsea replace Levi Colwill following his serious knee injury this week.
    New £37m signing from Ajax Jorrel Hato seemed a natural option but he is playing at left-back, not centre-back here in his first run out at Stamford Bridge.
    If he was the replacement option in Enzo Maresca's mind, you feel he would be playing in Colwill's position but he has instead opted for right-footed options like Trevoh Chalobah and now Josh Acheampong.

      Hato is incredibly young to take on that role ; have to think its Chalobah or Josh.

      Might not start every game. Havertz is there. Would have thought they would share minutes based on tactics/game state/etc

      Not convinced on minimal showing so far (I know, not match fit, new team mates etc) - some positive signs, but not convinced yet.
      And the last major signing from Portuguese League with a good scoring record ... Darwin Nunez
      Just a little concerned that he can hit the ground running.

        Bad pre-season form? He played 14 minutes on his debut and 60 mins the other day.

        He does have some tough fixtures though and Kai is back training now so he may not start against United. Remember he didn't train with Sporting for a while so there might be questions over his match fitness.

      Liv and City in the first 5 GW; let’s see if he adapts to the PL; seems like a knee jerk due to the hype just like Sesko; better options who are seasoned points scorers. If he starts off well, consider after GW5

      Unproven in a top league, has never scored in one. Might do a blinder but its a massive step up from the Portuguese league as Nunez and Felix found . . not as much time, not as much space.

    The forward options are so bad that I'm considering a Mo and Haaland draft. Is the midfield too weak?

    Sels (Dub)
    VVD Neco Diouf (Rodon) (Esteve)
    Salah Gakpo Kudus Georginio Anderson
    Haaland Watkins (Guiu)

      Who's Georginio? Don't like Kudus or Anderson. Nice otherwise

      I'm not a fan of Anderson, but I see why some people are.
      You miss Chelsea, but you can't get everyone.
      I think this might work. You could beef up your midfield or balance it out by selling Salah or Haaland, if needed

      I'd say that's very solid. Rutter . . .hmm . . bench is going to be weak . . but its not far off mine though I left out Salah for more oompf.

    Latest draft. Think it's pretty decent?

    Sanchez - Dubravka
    Frimpong - van der Ven - Murillo - AWB - Esteve
    Salah - Palmer - Gakpo - Johnson - Caicedo
    Watkins - Bowen - Guiu

      I’m not quite on the bandwagon yet, they’ve definitely strengthened up top but there’s a good few teams who’s front 3/4 I’d rather have, plus the defence still looks shaky. I’d be more than happy to be proven wrong though

    Thoughts on this first draft? Too defensive heavy? Should I drop one to upgrade a mid or forward

    Sels, Kelleher
    VVD, Lewis-Skelly, Milenk, RAN, VDV
    Salah, Palmer, Wirtz, Anderson, Baleba
    Bowen, Welbeck, Guiu

      Anderson and Baleba both rely on DefCon.

      So my thinking is just one of those until we see how it plays out.

      I’d maybe look at someone like KDH over Anderson if you can get there.

      Seagull by chance?

      Confident of Wellbeck being the pick in that bracket?

        Thanks, that backs up my gut that I need to wiggle another attacking mid into there. Actually a Forest fan, so I might stick with Anderson (unless we finally complete the Luiz deal).

      Yes, I would downgrade MLS (he will have competition from Calafiori who is back training now) and upgrade Wellbeck to a 7.5m (Wood/Pedro) etc.

    The main issue in my drafts is this - wonder if you’re finding the same:

    Haaland + Bruno / Wirtz
    Is .5/1m less than
    Salah and Watkins / Gyokires

    And Salah has worse fixtures and new team mates.

    Of course he is fixture-proof. But when choosing between premiums the haul factor has to come into it.

    Easy to get back to Salah with Haaland in the team. So I think that where I will start.

    Likely starting do

    Dub / Vergrub
    RAN, Neco, Cucu, AWB, Esteve
    Palmer, Wirtz, Rogers*, Mitoma, Anderson
    Haaland, Watkins, Guiu

    .5 itb

    Move to Salah if Wirtz not working.
    Watkins could become Gyok.
    Wirtz could become Bruno.

    I guess I’m saying I think having 14M tied up in the front line is better than tied up in the middle.

      Version 2 of my draft contains Haaland and I keep going back and forth. I do wonder if Liverpool's goal involvements will continue to be shared out more when the season starts. In which case, a Haaland formation could be better to start with.

      If Bruno had better fixtures I'd definitely be finding a way to include him. I would also favour Watkins over Gyok to begin with.

      Only change I would consider is perhaps downgrading Mitoma to a £6m mid who is a nailed on starter, and spend the funds upgrading a defender.
