Moving Target

The agonisingly long Bryan Mbeumo (£8.0m) transfer saga is finally over: the Cameroon international has joined Manchester United from Brentford for an initial £65m. That could rise to £71m.

It’s an eye-watering fee but the Red Devils are gaining one of last season’s leading players, an individual who racked up 236 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) points during 2024/25.

Securing Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha (£8.0m) is promising, as Ruben Amorim’s attempts to stop the rot that had them both trophyless and down in 15th place.

So, will the almost 26-year-old successfully adapt to new surroundings and remain a top FPL asset?

We’ll take a look during this Moving Target piece, including data and images from our Members Area.

THE QUOTES

“My mentality is to always be better than I was yesterday. I know that I have the spirit and character to reach another level here, learning from Ruben Amorim and playing alongside world-class players.” – Bryan Mbeumo

“Bryan’s goals and assists record in the Premier League is exceptional, his remarkable consistency has put him amongst the most productive players in England for the last three seasons.

“Bryan’s belief in our project and determination to join the club confirmed that he was the perfect fit for Manchester United and the culture that we are developing.” – Jason Wilcox, Man Utd director of football

THE HISTORY

FPL Gameweek 9: Saturday’s goals, assists, bonus points + stats 21

Mbeumo began by coming through the academy at Troyes, netting 10 times in a breakthrough 2018/19 campaign.

Then aged 20, he caught the eye of Brentford and became an instant hit in west London. It needed two playoff finals, but a side also boasting Ivan Toney, David Raya (£5.5m) and Christian Norgaard (£5.5m) successfully made its way to the Premier League

Once there, a lot of Mbeumo’s early outings involved him hitting the woodwork. By the end of 2021/22, he’d done so on a joint-most six occasions, partially explaining his low four-goal tally.

Attacking returns massively improved in season two and Mbeumo would likely have reached double figures for both goals and assists in 2023/24, had a three-month ankle injury not intervened. By that Gameweek 15 incident, he was already on 11 goal involvements, including a 16-pointer against Fulham in Gameweek 2.

However, we got to see the full potential of Mbeumo in 2024/25. He started each of the Bees’ 38 matches, playing more minutes than all other midfielders and forwards (3,412).

It allowed him to twice end a match with three returns, alongside other impressive hauls of 15, 14, 14 and 13 points.

I must say, Mark has done a fantastic job. So many common sense reforms and fixes. Perfect pricing. Even the AFCON transfers make things interesting when you stop to think about it. This is the best shape the game as been in for many, many years. Good job. WELL DONE, Mr. Cocker!

Man U will surprise a lot of people this season. I highly doubt they get top 4, but won't be far off. I think we will all have double Man U at some point, maybe triple.

It's possible. They have been run so poorly for a good few years now it's kind of scary. Buying proven premier league players has to be a better course of action for them

No Europe should make their players more desirable in FPL but they do have a large squad which will want to be playing football

It is possible. Forest went from their sort of league position to challenging for top 4 (top 5 now I guess) in a season. They fell short but nobody saw last season coming. I do think being out of europe is huge in terms of focus and priorities particularly in a season where half the league has europe.

Very foolish not to start with Salah, can always remove him later, but at the start going without will likely be a rank killer.

It depends what you do with the money you save by not having him.

£14.5m out of £100m budget seriously dents what you can do with the remaining 14 spaces.

I think you're treading on thin ice .
Salah is predicted by the rmt to be the highest points scorer for 3 of the first 5 gameweeks.
Add to that captaincy & you've got a lot of points to make up .
However if you study the fixtures further ahead (like me) .
There are opportunities to either not captain him or dare I say it go without him .

My take is Beto starts as he knows the league and played well second half of season. Bazza is young and will get minutes off the bench for a while

Barry will start I think. Everton have barely spent a penny for years so this fee is significant for them. Might be a front two but I suspect they dont rate Beto as high as most on here

Here we go again… heavy midfield as there’s so much value there this year. Considering Kerkez, Rogers, Bowen as alternatives.

    Kelleher // 4.0
    Aït-Nouri, Van de Ven, Wan-Bissaka // Konsa, 4.0
    Salah, Palmer, Wirtz, Marmoush, Maddison
    Watkins, Beto // 4.5

I’d flip Marmoush & Beto for McNeil & a better more secure starter, McNeil is on set pieces (these matter more now with the assist rule change) might be in with a shout for pens, for .5m more than Beto on a BB, it feels safer.

They wouldn't exactly be chucking him in, he's got the entire preseason to settle in and while Beto did an admirable job, he's not a good enough footballer to be their first choice no.9.

I wouldn’t consider the Mbuemo fee “eye watering” as per the article.

£65m for one of the best players in the league last season, when the likes of Elanga and Madueke are going for £50m+

Does anyone know whether Fullkrug is likely to start up front for WH, or are they likely to sign a new striker?

Not to worry - just read they've been linked with Wilson. Seems an odd one given his age and injury record.
