So many Manchester City players to choose from in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) – and so few of them nailed!

The Cityzens go under the spotlight for our latest Fantasy team preview.

In this guide, we’ll attempt to pinpoint City’s best FPL picks for the upcoming season.

We’ll also try to predict their line-up for Gameweek 1 (which is easier said than done…), examine the strengths and weaknesses on the pitch, assess the opening fixtures, detail their top players for defensive contributions (DC) and more.

The data and graphics in this article come from either our Members Area or Statsbomb, with whom we are again partnering in 2025/26.

Fantasy managers can get access to the wealth of Statsbomb numbers, as well as the usual Opta stats, new defensive contribution (DC) points, recalculated points from last season, exclusive articles, transfer planner, tools and app, with a discounted Chief Scout membership today!

MAN CITY: REASONS TO BE CHEERFUL

NOTEWORTHY SIGNINGS

Rayan Cherki – Scout Report

City have bolstered their squad with the arrivals of Tijjani Reijnders (£5.5m), Rayan Ait-Nouri (£6.0m), Rayan Cherki (£6.5m) and James Trafford (£5.0m) this summer.

Ait-Nouri is particularly interesting, as it pretty much confirms Pep Guardiola’s preference to return to conventional full-backs.

Reijnders offers an option arriving late into the box, while Cherki instantly adds creativity to City’s midfield.

There have been some notable changes in the coaching staff as well, with Pep Lijnders brought in to replace Juanma Lillo.

Lijnders, who worked under Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool, has a reputation for high-intensity pressing and attacking play.

RODRI IS BACK… JUST NOT QUITE YET

What is Rodri's defensive contribution points potential in FPL? 2

With Rodri (£6.5m) back from injury, you’d expect City’s defence and in-possession play to improve.

The Spaniard played just 72 minutes of Premier League football in 2024/25 before rupturing his ACL in Gameweek 5. His importance to City is captured in StatsBomb’s expected goals conceded (xGC) trendline:

The Ballon d’Or winner won’t return to full fitness until after September’s international break, but when he does, it’ll be a massive boost.

And what about Phil Foden (£8.0m)? He’s had some time away this summer and will be desperate to recapture his form ahead of next year’s FIFA World Cup.

MAN CITY: REASONS TO BE FEARFUL

DISAPPOINTING 2024/25 CAMPAIGN

FPL notes: Pep on Marmoush's "impact" + Haaland's fitness

City finished third in 2024/25, 13 points adrift of champions Liverpool.

Their nine losses in the Premier League was more than their previous two seasons combined.

They were also eliminated early from both the UEFA Champions League and League Cup, and their defeat in the FA Cup final against Crystal Palace meant no silverware for the first time in ages.

“The season has been difficult, a tough year. We struggled a lot in the Champions League, we weren’t solid or consistent. It’s becoming more complicated, as seven, eight, or nine teams can qualify [for the Champions League].” – Pep Guardiola

The underlying numbers raise further concerns: third for expected goals (xG) and seventh for xGC.

There was a pretty sizeable gap between Arsenal and Liverpool defensively, too:

Evening, any thoughts on Joel Piroe, last seasons championship golden boot? Dont think I've seen him in any drafts, his preseason not too shabby. Thanks.

fpl have made a mistake with the pricing... The Mateta and Evanilson give you sooo much more for little more cost. So I'm avoiding the sub 6m forwards

He's in my team as a cheap enabler. Bamford isn't competition and at that price he's good for the bench

I think I would rather downgrade to 4.5m fodder and use the 1.0m to upgrade elsewhere than consider playing a striker from a promoted team

Its a shame promotes sides got so bad last couple of years. I remember 5-6 years ago we could really find some budget attacking gems even from promoted sides. Pukki(norwich), Bamford(leeds), Mitrovic(fulham) first come to mind

Delap and Vardy actually did okay last season fwiw both around 130 points. What's Mateta and Evanilson's ceiling? Mateta's was only 150 last season but he did lose a lot of minutes after his ear thing. Not saying Piroe will necessarily be that good but its not all doom and gloom and for 20 points ish for 1.5m difference in price.... I think that 1.5 could be used somewhere else to a lot more effect i.e. defence where its the difference between Ait Nouri or Cucurella or whoever and whoever the best 4.5 guy is or its NFO/EVE defcon monsters instead of promoted defenders.

Don't think he had a choice. If Man City matched a bid that Burnley accepted for him, they could sign him. It was reported that they waited until the last hour to exercise the contract clause after Newcastle had agreed terms.

Me either, he’s poor with his feet and drops clangers a lot. Not a very Pep keeper at all.

Very glad United didn’t fall into such an obvious trap. Woodward would have given him £400k a week, the pillock.

Just thinking about Tarkowski & whether he's worth getting. Is he really going to get that many Defcons given that they have a decent run of fixtures. Surely he gets them against the harder opponents

Tark would have triggered the 2pt bonus in 66.7% of his starts. That's over 14 assists worth of points.

Teams like Leeds and Brighton are in the sweet spot of being high pressing and attacking, but without the quality of the top teams. They don't have players like Wirtz or Pedro or Odegaard to dance between the lines and break down double decker buses like Everton. So they seem like ripe fixtures to get both the 2pt bonus and the CSs combined for a monster haul.

Also, don't forget the big advantage Everton have over teams like Forest - they have no Europe.

He'll probably play as a left sided 8 and not LW. Newcastle need cover for Bruno, Joelinton and Tonali with Longstaff sold and Willock always injured. Miley is the only cover at the minute.

Looks great on paper with no Mo or Haaland. I’d possibly go Frimpong or RAN to a more safe Virgil.

If Saka's given up penalties, he's a non event.

Pretty confident this will be locked in. What do we think?

    Sels
    Cucurella, Porro, Neco
    Salah, Palmer, Bruno, Anderson, Reijnders
    Watkins, Mateta

    Dubravka, Andersen, Esteve, Guiu.

Last minute decision would be Mateta and Reijnders or Larsen and Sarr?

The Salah draft is very similar to one of mine. I would say to start at least Salah is a must with his ownership. If he looks like he's not in good form after a few games easy to sell him with no real loss.

Cheers. I think I’m leaning that way too, gives new players time to settle and other areas open to swap out. GL!

This isn't looking good for Friday. Everyone should get their bus team in pretty quickly.

Just in case the site fails to work pre-deadline day, THIS is my locked in team. I think.

    Verbruggen.
    Diouf. Konsa. vDv.
    Salah. Palmer. Saka. Reijnders.
    Watkins. Mateta. JP.

    Dubravka. DH. Esteve. Dorgu.

Yes I know the defence is godawful but the rest is like a ff Rembrandt. Agreed?

      Ask for a refund.
Probably starts GW1, but there's too much uncertainty.
Both Fofana and Chalobah are expected to be available for Palace.

I haven't really changed this much at all, any comments or changes people would make? Sarr is Palace Sarr btw.

    Sels
    Porro - Munoz - Diouf
Ismaila Sarr - Wirtz - Salah - Palmer - Reijnders
    Gyokeres - Bowen

Dubravka - De Cuyper - Esteve - Guiu

Gyokeres could also easily be Watkins.

Any thoughts on how long it takes for Jack the Lad to get bedded in at Everton?

International break after GW3. So probably GW4 when he's fully fit and ready.

I actually don't mind if he pushes KDH deeper. More defcon. And Everton are a defcon goldmine. He'll still get set-pieces and assists from open play too. Really like KDH at 5.0m.

Same here with KDH! Thanks for the thoughts mate, makes sense. I’m pretty high on Everton this year. Seriously!
