Fabregas Out Of Baggies Clash

by Mark on August 12

Cesc Fabregas has picked up a hamstring injury and will be out for the next two games according to Arsene Wenger.

Fabregas has not travelled to Holland for Arsenal’s first leg of the Champions League Qualifier with FC Twente and will now miss Arsenal’s opener against West Brom on Saturday. Although Wenger has said he will miss only the next two games, he has been optimistic about injuries before – Van Persie last season springs to mind. The injury could well sideline Fabregas for longer then.

Kolo Toure also misses the trip to Holland, as does Senderos – they have hip and hamstring injuries respectively and must also be concerns for the weekend.

Aaron Ramsey is now set to start tomorrow night and must also be a good bet to be in the lineup against the Baggies. Djourou is set to deputise in defence alongside Gallas.

Striaght swap Alves for Bent – Boro have 2 difficult first fixtures.

Marc August 13 at 2:16 pm

I wonder if Wenger would play Bentdner and Adebayor up front with Van Persie out wide.

If that’s the case I’ll be looking to play all 3 as can see Arsenal spanking West Brom on sat.

jim August 13 at 2:31 pm

Moo, i loved your team, very nice.

Also, i think stevie b was spot on.

Aslo, here’s a little tester- Nolan or Taylor for Bolton’s first five games+..huh? tough one indeed yes

Akers August 13 at 2:37 pm

I’ve plumped for Taylor.

Marc August 13 at 2:33 pm

Taylor due to him taking the Pens.

Steve August 13 at 3:11 pm

and all the set pieces

Cliffard August 13 at 2:39 pm

QUESTION: DOES THIS FORUM HAVE A LEAGUE?

Andy P August 13 at 3:04 pm

Fantasy Premier League
League Code: 20529-12043

The Guardian Fantasy Football
League Name: fantasyfootballscout
League Password: shorey

Nick August 13 at 3:32 pm

Lampard + Bentley + Bent

OR

Essien + Petrov + Torres

?

Sain August 13 at 3:51 pm

None. Get a women instead.

Old Gregg August 13 at 3:54 pm

Lampard it is then. Curvaceous Frank.

Steve August 13 at 3:54 pm

the first option

Nick August 13 at 4:33 pm

thanks,

@ Sain i have a woman (the blow-up kind counts right?) ; )

Dudee August 13 at 3:34 pm

Please could someone tell me a way to improve on my current team ??

Jaaskelinan

Clichy
Carragher
Carvalho

Arteta
Bentley
Taylor
Lampard

Ashton
Adebayor
Bent

Robinson,Baines,Figueroa,De Ridder

Old Gregg August 13 at 3:38 pm

Get rid of your entire team and then select the same players again.

But do it naked.

Yeah… do it naked.

Steve August 13 at 4:02 pm

not unless you want me to give you my line up.

Marc August 13 at 4:06 pm

If you’re planning to deploy a 3-4-3, then I would downgrade Baines (he’s value at 6.0 isn’t he?) and upgrade either you MF or Ashton. As an example, find a 5.0 defender and switch arteta for young

Dudee August 13 at 3:40 pm

Shut Up, I want a serious answer.

Old Gregg August 13 at 3:42 pm

Too many players with names starting with the first three letters of the alphabet?

Have nothing to say about your squad- looks as good as any and certainly better than mine.. In fact, do you mind if I steal it?

Old Gregg August 13 at 3:44 pm

Ooo, maybe one thing.. A Young for Arteta and maybe downgrade one of your subs to someone cheaper.

Old Gregg August 13 at 3:49 pm

Anyone playing Guardian one?

I haven’t got a clue how good my team is to be honest… am all confused. Any ideas for good defensive midfielders? Reo-Coker, Denilson, Diarra?

Dudee August 13 at 3:53 pm

why would you want a defensive midfielder ?? Not very good point scorers. To answer your question Michael Essien,Hargreves,Mascherano, ?? I’d go for Essien.

Yeh i’ll swap Arteta For Ashley Young

Old Gregg August 13 at 3:57 pm

In the Guardian fantasy game you have to choose two defensive midfielders, and you get points for interceptions and tackles etc… Essien would be good but he ain’t cheap…

cyberPUNK August 13 at 3:58 pm

why are so many people asking these stupid questions. nobody here knows any better and anybody who pretends to is just a prick.

Old Gregg August 13 at 4:01 pm

You sound like my old philosophy teacher…

Steve August 13 at 4:04 pm

I agree that the posting of a full team is annoying, but people can ask for opinions and others can give them. Agreed none of us have a crystal ball (or if they do, surely it can be put to better uses than fantasy football) but we can take an educated guess at what we think is going to happen based on our knoweledge of the beautiful game and a good few seasons playing FPL?

James August 13 at 4:21 pm

How do you think people plan for any future events?

Of course nothing is certain, but it’s not difficult to make educated guesses based on historical data.

cyberPUNK August 13 at 4:25 pm

you say that, but asking for advice when countless data is already available on the site just seems fairly foolish. any questions are really just attempts for people to feel better about their own decisions. people should be able to make educated guesses if they read the selection guides, looks at the scores, and the other countless other mounds of data available…

Old Gregg August 13 at 4:39 pm

Nothing wrong with wanting a bit of love and affirmation… It makes the world go round!

It’s like a big therapy session. Do you want to cry? It’s ok- you can cry…. Adebayor or Crouch?

James August 13 at 4:41 pm

I didn’t question that at all, it’s your other comment.

Is the guy that runs the site a ‘prick’ for listing his current picks?

You’re way off with that remark.

cyberPUNK August 13 at 4:59 pm

mark is not a prick, that should be set in stone on a separate webpage that all must read before even accessing this website, haha. he admits that he doesn’t know whether or not the advice he provides is any good, and that’s respectable. it’s these self righteous fantasy football fans that sit on this site 24/7 and think they’re some sort of oracle of fantasy football.

in the future, please don’t put words in my mouth.

sorry, probably just having a bad night. cheers. look forward to discussing the season ahead. good luck everyone.

Dr. Rog August 13 at 4:05 pm

interested to see what the thoughts are on the following 3 options as it appears most people are mulling over the same problem -

Gerrard + Lamps + RVP
or
Gerrard + Bentley + Ade + 1.5mln
or
Lamps + Bentley + Ade + 2mln

Out of the 4 players which one do you drop out?

I’m loathe to let the fat phuck anywhere near my team.

Steve August 13 at 4:09 pm

lamps, bentley and ade i reckon? I’d got Lamps+Fab+Ade until the fab injury news hit us. I’m planning on going with your 3rd suggestion and then swapping back as soon as Fab is fit, hopefully Bentleys price will have gone up by then too ;o)

simon August 13 at 4:13 pm

lamps is a dead cert to score on sunday now he’s just signed his new contract!

Old Gregg August 13 at 4:40 pm

With all those extra pies.. will he be match fit?

Intricacy August 13 at 4:48 pm

I’ve gone for Lampard, Young, Bentley and Osman in Midfield.

Osman vs. Matthew Taylor? What do you reckon is the best option there?

Cahill scored against Stoke last season as well. I feel the need to put three Bolton players in my side to soften the blow if we lose to them.

themoz August 13 at 4:51 pm

Guys, what are your thoughts about Walcott? He now has his chance of stepping up.
At the moment I have Essien and RVP but I’m worried that RVP might be pushed wide but then again he does take free kicks and am I right that he is their primary penalty taker?

Should I swap Essien and RVP for Fat Frank and Walcott? Will Walcott be taking some corners and causing mayhem on the wing?

I’d appreciate your comments. thx

Old Gregg August 13 at 5:02 pm

moz, Walcott won’t be taking corners, not sure his delivery is good enough. Plus he just still doesn’t look much of a threat yet….sometimes he still looks out of his depth. I’d wait a while with that one… could be wrong of course and he may well do well on Saturday. He could be a decent shout for Saturday as a one off, with so many injuries he’s bound to be there and I’m sure Arsenal will get a few goals that he might be involved in, but I wouldn’t have him as a long term strategy.

Safer with van P or Adebayor. Adebayor much safer but more dough unfortunately.

Myself, I’m looking at Eboue…. a joke perhaps but I have a funny feeling in these bones…

themoz August 13 at 5:05 pm

Thanks for that Gregg. Just be careful about Eboue – he’s always asking to be booked and a sending off is never far away…..
And in FPl they have moved him up from defence to midfield.

Old Gregg August 13 at 5:08 pm

Yeah.. I know it’s stupid. He’s a liability, But I like to have a joker in the pack!

Was considering Essien- but what position is he going to play this season exactly?

Cesc_God August 13 at 5:08 pm

Walcott should be a regular starter this year. The only problem is he is classified as a forward in the FPL when Wenger uses him as a winger.
You’re indeed correct that RVP takes penalties as long as he is not the fouled player. Along with Fabregas, they take the free kicks and corners as well.
Lampard just signed his new contract, so he would really want to score this weekend.

T August 13 at 5:18 pm

anyone think that giovani of tottenham with push up at striker with bent now that berbatov will most likely leave

Nick August 13 at 5:20 pm

no, Arshavin will play there

Old Gregg August 13 at 5:26 pm

If Berba goes… surely he’ll be worth getting at United? Or will he..? looking at their frontline, there’s no pace.. Tevez, Rooney and Berbatov.

Nick August 13 at 5:31 pm

Berba is already gone. You forgot to add Ronaldo to your list and also Keane was not the fastest but that partnership at Spurs worked well.

imo he will do extremely well at Man u. what will be interesting is seeing him have a strop at Rooney if he misplaces a pass (i wouldn’t like to be Berba when he does that)

yer dad August 13 at 5:43 pm

Welcome back Old Gregg. Have you been on a 8 month FPL scouting trip or been on tour with The Krankies. Your humour has been missed.

Old Gregg August 13 at 6:37 pm

yer dad- good to see your beautiful mug! I’m afraid I tried to have a social life.. and failed. Hope work down the pit is going ok in these credit crunch times..

yer dad August 13 at 7:10 pm

The pit is fine apart from Wi-Fi reception, which is poor. Credit crunch has been going on up North for 40 years so no worries there. My allotment has kept us in food, I just need a proper substitute for fuel after running my car on Blue Nun for years and finding out Tesco have stopped selling it.
I tried a life for a couple of weeks myself but the local bingo hall closed down so I logged back on here and now switch between Foxy bingo and Scout picks so I have a life and this.
We have kept Fergies Shorey defence chit chat going while you have been away and it is now the official non-football post which Puffinboy oversees and is chief monitor.

Right back to football talk. Gerrard on bench tonight.

Gordon August 13 at 5:49 pm

Front line quandry for opening fixture. Will look to get Yakubu in after GMW1.

Elmander + Anelka + Adebayor
Elmander + Ashton + Adebayor
D Bent + Ashton + Adebayor

Or any other mixture of the above three as long as Adebayor is in!!!

Thoughts?

CK August 13 at 6:17 pm

Bent Ashton and Ade for me mate. Got a feeling about Bent. I don’t think he is a good long term option but I think he will start strong!

Bedknobs and Boomsticks August 13 at 9:07 pm

That’s the front line I’ve just gone for too. I was standing strong with Torres but, God, that game was abysmal. I had Bent from the get-go for his first season at Charlton based on his pre-season form. Turned out pretty good so hopefully the same will happen this time.

40% still own captain Fab. I can almost smell the fall in price……

CK August 13 at 6:19 pm

Who for captain this week lads?

higgo August 13 at 7:03 pm

Big frank? new contract will have him very happy indeed

Gordon August 13 at 6:35 pm

Adebayor all the way for me

yer dad August 13 at 7:12 pm

199

yer dad August 13 at 7:12 pm

200, get in. Shall we get it to 300 before Mark makes up some stuff about Lampard and Gerrard and throw us all off the scent.

Yogesh August 13 at 7:17 pm

hi yer dad. how are things with you. Its been a long time since the Euros. Looking forward to EPL season. :)

yer dad August 13 at 7:29 pm

Hi Yogesh. Yeah seems it. I think there will be more in the Scout FPL league than our unofficial Scout Euro league which I didn’t do too well in,which I still blame Steve McClaren for and I blame him for my 3rd divorce and the credit crunch, price of gas and water rates.
Have you choose your team yet Yogesh or are you like me and change it everytime your log on?

higgo August 13 at 7:43 pm

i had forgotten about that league. we had a total of 11!. scout league looks like it could have 1100

Yogesh August 13 at 8:11 pm

Yeah, this official league will be fun to play. Sorry to hear that its been tough but hoping that better times lie ahead.

I have pretty much chosen by back line and 3/5 midfield. Its the forwards I am unsure of. I just can’t decide if I should buy a big shot striker or go for decent value one. Your advice is most welcome. :)

Yogesh August 13 at 8:08 pm

Really so true higgo. The league pages just seem to go on and on.

yer dad August 13 at 8:23 pm

Did you win it Higgo??

Yogesh: Times are good, so don’t worry buddy it is just that since we didn’t (England) qualify for Euro 08 (oh yeah, Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Rep Ireland)the credit crunch has got worse, pubs, beer sales, pizza and little white car flags did not get sold. I made the 3rd divorce up and could never leave yer mum.
My advice is usually crap and Luke would verify that as I advised him to sell Santa Cruz the weekend he got a hat trick. I still laugh but he went downhill after that.
I fancy Tevez as he is a little workhorse and will get the bonus points now the winker is injured. I am also toying with Anelka but that decision will come at 11.29am Saturday GMT.

puffinboy August 13 at 8:27 pm

Ah well, at least you didn’t have to see The Wombats.

Let the Shorey Up the Defence League begin, you old scoundrel!

yer dad August 13 at 8:36 pm

“Bring it on” my Gordan Ramsey nose biting friend. Your old buddy old Gregg is back after searching the world for new friends and a life but returning empty handed. He has a lot of explaining to do.

higgo August 13 at 8:29 pm

no, 5th. adebayor is doing v little tonight. RVP seems to be the only one buzzing around but it doesnt bode well for arsenal strikers saturday regardless of which one you take

Yogesh August 13 at 8:36 pm

Adebayor just scored ! I wonder who provided the assist. By the way, both Denilson and Ramsey seem to have played 90 minutes.

Yogesh August 13 at 8:32 pm

Oh..I got it now.

I was thinking of yakubu|alves but keep going back to adebayor|bent.

Now you have got me thinking about tevez. We will have a better idea once berbatov’s future is decided.

higgo August 13 at 8:47 pm

funny thing about adebayor…he always pulls his finger out eventually. i think i’ll stick with ade/ bent for first match anyway.

Marc August 13 at 7:26 pm

Sorry another.. which is better question:

Lampard, De Ridder, and Moore.

or

Arteta, Downing/Petrov, and Zaki.

?

higgo August 13 at 7:41 pm

second is more rounded whereas first basically relies on lampard.

Holmesy August 13 at 7:44 pm

I’d go for the second one but hey i’m no expert!

So a question for you…

Choose:

Gerard (if fit) and Zamora

or

A. Young and Ashton, Walcott or another less than 7m forward?

Marco August 14 at 12:10 am

Gerrard + Zamora = 17mil

Young + Ashton = 15mil

Where’s the other 2 mil going?

If you’re putting it into a striker, why not pick up Bent (total 16mil) or look at the likes of Defoe/Crouch/Alves/Elmander?
To me they’re all upgrades compared to ashton.

Holmesy August 14 at 9:00 pm

It would depend on Jussi or Howard?

the jmann August 14 at 7:17 am

Love the website Mark, doing a great job!

give me some feed back on the team lad if you dont mind

Reina (Schwarzer)
Jagielka, Carvalho, Gallas (L Young, Assou-Ekotto)
Lampard, A Young, Bentley, Osman (Geovanni)
Van Persi, Ashton, Bent

any thoughts?

and what would you perfer?

gerard + adeboyer + ashton + kitson
or
lampard + VP + ashton + bent

Holmesy August 14 at 9:00 pm

second one seems better to me
