Fabregas Out Of Baggies Clash
Cesc Fabregas has picked up a hamstring injury and will be out for the next two games according to Arsene Wenger.
Fabregas has not travelled to Holland for Arsenal’s first leg of the Champions League Qualifier with FC Twente and will now miss Arsenal’s opener against West Brom on Saturday. Although Wenger has said he will miss only the next two games, he has been optimistic about injuries before - Van Persie last season springs to mind. The injury could well sideline Fabregas for longer then.
Kolo Toure also misses the trip to Holland, as does Senderos - they have hip and hamstring injuries respectively and must also be concerns for the weekend.
Aaron Ramsey is now set to start tomorrow night and must also be a good bet to be in the lineup against the Baggies. Djourou is set to deputise in defence alongside Gallas.

Brilliant. I’m actually happy. Now i can bring in Lampard. Is it worth taking out Bale to Free up 1 million ????????

Marek Cech. Is he going to be playing midfield? If so he might be worth a pick up because he is listed as a DEF in every fantasy game I’ve seen. Does anyone know what role we will take on?

Who do you think it’s best to give captaincy to for the first match: Lamps, Gerrard or Adebayor?
[Reply]
Bale doesn’t look likely to start, so I think you’d be safe to ship him out until you know if he’s playing at all. Why not switch him for Baines, with his easy opening fixtures, 5 mil price? As one of the few remaining players healthy enough to play for the Toffees, he’s sure to start and gets forward in a way that’s not that different from Bale.
Or maybe, if you really want a gamble, Assou-Ekoto, who looks likely to start at LB for Spurs. And only costs 4.5.

haha, if there is one thing i know its Spurs. Bale is 1st choice. Ekotto has been playing in pre-season but that is to get his fitness up as he hasn’t kicked a ball in god knows how long. Ramos won’t put him in at the deep end. Also there a question marks over Ekotto’s ability.
Bale gives another creative outlet and can take a very good freekick/corner. he will be in the team

Reply by stevie b on August 13, 2008 1:03 pm:
has Bale played in the last couple of friendlies? Presumably if he was 1st choice he’d have played 90 mins in at least 1 of the last 3. He can’t go into the opening day totally cold.

Reply by Nick on August 13, 2008 3:05 pm:
he has been playing i don’t know exact minutes but he he played a large part in the roma game. he was a bit injured during early pre-season though.
Also Bale has the versatility to play as a left midfielder (not his natural position but can still do a job) if Ramos wants to play it a bit more defensive on that wing with either Gilberto or Ekotto behind him.
[Reply]
here’s the question. use your first transfer to get fabs back in or put him on bench and play with your sub forward instead? bolton, fulham stoke stikers could all score this weekend… what is your “coping strategy”? or swap vp in for ade and then upgrade fabs to gerrard…
[Reply]
Reply by James on August 12, 2008 6:52 pm:
Fabregas is 10m, so you can get an ample replacement rather than use a cheap striker sub. Unless you have already made plans for that first sub, there should be no issue.
This is for FPL.

You’d be crazy to have Fab sitting on your bench for the first game of the season, particularly when considering Arsenal’s history of under-estimating how long players will be out for. Upgrade to Lamps or Gerrard or downgrade and beef up elsewhere.
[Reply]
Im am selling him and stengthening my team wihtout him. selling him has allowed me to buy Anelka up front instead of Ashton. Chelsea at home is a bit of a gift horse on first game. I have drafted in A Young as Fabregas’ replacement. Due to lack of preseason and now an injury i think it will take a few wks for fab to get to form anyway, by this time ronaldo may be due back, WILD CARD TIME!!!??
[Reply]
For three whole days my team had been the same. Three days dammit! I was almost happy……
Agreed with Gordon, that’s captain Fab out of the reckoning for a few weeks. Also, a lot of people won’t notice the injury (especially with holidays etc), so his price should drop by 0.1 or 02 before he comes back.

but Chelsea game is tricky for the first 5 weeks.. I will go with west ham indeed

Oh well thats forced my hand to option one.
Even more annoyed as am going to the game on sat so will miss out there as well.
Would be carefull about making to many changes due to this as it could be a smoke screen by wenger to give him more time to get fit and he might be back for sat if not the week after.
[Reply]
Fabregas has gone!!! well…cat, pigeons, etc…
what now i wonder….still not sure lampard or gerrard are the answer….tinkering forevermore.
[Reply]
not really , alves/bent/yakubu all cheaper/same as him and i think they should get a better goal return
[Reply]
Lampard was always in for me.
Gone back to the plan of Adebayor and Van Persie up front as that West Brom fixture needs 3 Gooners in while replacing Fabregas with Ashley Young.
Once he is fit i will move Adebayor out for Ashton and bring Fabregas back.
Oh the tinkering
[Reply]
Right, it’s either Bentley or Arteta, or more of a more radical move; Giovanni to replace Fabregas. Bentley/Arteta, and then keep the same forward line, or Giovanni for wk1, with Torres coming into the team for the first couple of games…..hmmm….
quite like the idea of, with one change, having Torres, Adebayor and Santa Cruz as my forward line for week 2; playing Boro (H), Ful (a), Hull (H) respectively. hmmm……
[Reply]
noooooooooooooooooooooo, i’d got my team set and had really definitley finished changing it after weeks of daily tinkering. Who is the best replacment if you can’t spend more than 10m and already have lampard and young? Any opinions on how the lack of Fab will affect Adebayors potential as captain? i have had to change fabs and downing for lampard and osman , any other alternative midfielders for 6.5 or cheaper? osman seems best option so far but any other ideas welcome. Same as alot of you guys , finally had my team sorted , now this !
[Reply]
You dont wanna pull a hammy!!!!
[Reply]
This is a travesty
After much tinkering I’ve decided on simply downgrading to Bentley for a few games and kept some cash in the bank
Other option I can see is plodding off without him and then spending any excess points earned on transfers to get him back

Spare a thought for fellow manager Arsene Wenger. Last year’s midfield which played such beautiful football last season has basically vanished.
Hleb, Flamini and Gilberto all gone. Fabregas, Rosicky, Diaby all injured.
I might try my luck with a budget Arsenal midfielder. Anyone got any thought about who is likely to play against West Brom now? Denilson? Eboue? Ramsey? If my ceiling was £6m, which of those three would anyone pick?

erm, out of those three id say no way on eboue , then ramsey and denilson are pretty evenly matched , maybe denilson on “experience” in the premierlegue. Although im clutching at straws there.
[Reply]
I could stretch to Nasri but he’s unproven and I don’t think he’ll score. Denilson can really strike the ball when he fancies it though.
Basically I’m looking at Denilson & Adebayor or Nasri & RVP.
[Reply]
Reply by Sam (Team Sam) on August 13, 2008 1:27 am:
Nasri might not be fit to start, he has a slight injury. If Fab won’t make it, and with Diaby injured, Denilson is a guaranteed starter… especially as Wenger said he was probably going to start with him anyway. I am still however hope for a new midfield signing this week… maybe even Barry??
[Reply]
Hmm… interesting wrench thrown into the team selection process.
Of my entire team, the two players that I believed to be a lock for the entire season were Adebayor and Fabregas. Now that Fabegras is injured I am considering switching my formation from 4-4-2 to a 3-5-2 and going with a slew of mid priced midfielders.
The reason? I think Gerrard is overpriced (11.5 in the FPL) and there is the ever present threat of Barry coming into the side.. which I believe would reduce his output. And while I simply adore Lampard, there are just too many question marks to the start of Chelsea’s season with the new manager and the full midfield.
So my team currently looks like this:
Friedel (Schwarzer)
Carvalho, Evra, Shorey (Shittu, Figueroa)
Young, Bentley, Gamst-Pedersen, Arteta, Downing
Adebayor, Crouch (Moore)
With 1m in the bank.
I’m thinking of bringing in Cuellar for Shorey, depending on how much he is, as I think he’ll be slotted into CB immediately.
Also thinking bringing in Cech or Reina if I have the funds.
And will swap Bosingwa for Carvalho once the former is healthy.
I personally tip MGP and Crouch to have solid seasons.. I think both have something to prove.
[Reply]
Most likely Arsene will play:
Eboue, Denilson, Ramsey, Walcott
with Wilshere to replace the ineffective headless chicken we all love to hate, Eboue after 60mins or so
We’ve also seen him shift RVP to left mid and partner Bentner with Ade upfront - would be interesting to see if he starts with that most likely is plan B
I wonder if this finally forces wengers hand in the transfer market.
Alonso or a holding mid would be a fine addition
[Reply]

Reply by James on August 13, 2008 8:54 am:
Yeah I had all 4. Simply cannot deny the form of the spurs duo. Downing is always worth a shout, and Alves impressed at the end of last season. I just don’t like the fact that all 4 are in the one match on the 1st day of the season, so I’ve went with the spurs duo. I can see me draughting downing in for Arteta once Everton’s kind fixture run ends, and Alves… well, I’d like him in, but we’ll see how Adebayor and Zamora fare… could swap to Van Persie and Alves depending on form.
[Reply]
Go with Eboue!!
He’s going to surprise everyone this season….it’s finally going to come together for him. The Arse have been busy working in training on Eboue whipping crosses in for the heads of Adebayor and Bendtner.
Ramsey- just no. No way.
[Reply]
This really messes up my plans. I’m going to have to bring in a big name replacement so I’ve gone with Lampard but I’ve had to sacrifice Ashton for Zamora. I hope that doesn’t come back to haunt me.
[Reply]
OK, how’s this one…
GK: Cech, Schwarzer
DF: Sagna, Carragher, L.Young, Cahill, Figueroa
MF: Bentley, Lampard, A.Young, Taylor, De Ridder
ST: Adebayor(c), D.Bent, Ashton
+ 1mil in the bank
slightly worried my defence is a little weak, but I had to fiddle a little to bring Lampard in for Fabregas. Alternatively, I could downgrade to Arteta/Petrov and beef up my defence/midfield a little.
any thoughts about my team and where i could use that extra 1mil, or whether i should just hang on to it to allow for first transfer flexibility???
[Reply]
Reply by Jim Boukis on August 13, 2008 1:59 am:
i’m having the same thought process with the amount of budget left over.
i think its a safe bet as i dont see many clean sheets across the board, and in my opinion its always better to have more cash in midfield/forward than defence as they promise a greater chance of higher return.
similarly, lamps in for this week, but that extra 1 mil allows you to drop him after this week if Gerrard is fit v Mid at anfield with keane/torres equals a drumming for middlesbrough, or get rid of him for others…
[Reply]
I wouldn’t bank on Fabregas being back for GW2 so anyone thinking of leaving him on the bench or leaving money in wait to bring him in might want to rethinnk.
He has played one game in preseason and is now injured. I’ll give him a few games before bringing him in.

Hi all, I am a first timer this season and would appreciate all your thoughts on the following:
Which 3 would you pick out of Clichy, Carragher, Evra, Laursen, Shorey and Carvalho? And would it be a bad idea to have both Shorey & Laursen starting together?
Which one would you pick out of Arteta Petrov or Downing?
And finally, which forward partnership would you choose?
Keane and RVP, or
Anelka and RVP, or
Adebayor and Bent
I’m really struggling with this and wasn’t prepared for how hard it is so I would really welcome your comments and thankyou in advance.

Reply by Swerve on August 13, 2008 4:42 am:
I’m not so keen on Keene, Michael - new club, new combinations, no goals pre-season. Adebayor and Anelka have looked massive pre-season, and Bent even more so, and at that price I think a must-have, plus Spurs look like they will score a hat-full . . . so I would have Bent and one of the others (look at their fixtures).
Petrov and Downing are in everything but I think Everton may struggle a bit (even though they have the easiest start of all so unsure of Arteta. Shame Cahill’s not fit.
[Reply]
I would go with
Carragher, Carvalho and either Clichy/Shorey
Carragher and Carvalho are always good for clean sheets and Clichy/Shorey will get forward a lot and provide a few assists + clean sheets
From the midfielders I would go with Downing just because he pretty much does everything for Boro, but its a tough choice, Arteta is great when on top form but I’m worried for Evertons lack of a real team at the moment and same goes with Petrov, he was in my team at the start but at the moment theirs far to much controversy at Man City.
and for the strikers, I’m gonna say Adebayor and Bent
although Anelka and RVP wouldn’t be to bad…I wouldn’t bother with the Keane and RVP combo at all.
[Reply]
ok this is my team after fabregas
Jaaskelainen, (Schwarzer)
Young L, Jagielka, Clichy, Dossena, (Figueroa)
Downing, Bentley, Gerrard, Young A, (Mendes)
Torres, Bent, (Miller)
[Reply]
Please my “Life Without Fabregas” team options:
Option A:
Jussi (Kirkland - not planning to play him for a couple of GWs anyway)
P. Neville, Carvalho, Luke Young (Cahill, Figueroa)
Lampard, Gerrard, A. Young, M. Petrov (De Ridder)
Van Persie*, D. Bent**, Zamora
Van Persie could be swapped for Berbatov (if goes to Man U) or Anelka
Bent could be swapped for Alves if Berbatov stays at Spurs
Option B:
same team as above but:
Gerrard –> Bentley
Van Persie –> Adebayor
2.0 mn in bank waiting for Fabregas to return
thoughts?

Reply by Swerve on August 13, 2008 4:51 am:
Good team.
Jagielka (in midfield but listed as defender) instead of Neville?
I think Bentley’s well worth it if Spurs and his pre-season form and history are anything to go by and Adebayor’s track-record speaks for itself. RVP’s goals/points per minute ratio is massive but he struggles to string a lot of games together and has Bendtner and Velos breathing down his neck. If he and the club get on a roll, with their easy start, however, he could start racking up the points.
[Reply]
Hmmm Fab being out is an interesting one..I can see him missing more than just the one game…So given that Ronaldo is out and Gerrard with niggling injuries that leaves fat Frank as our only big gun option..I’m tempted to run with Essien instead if he plays right wing which means i can afford Downing or Petrov as my 4th midfielder. Or i can put Frank in alongside Gera and transfer Fabregas back in when fit…Essentially
Lampard and Gera
or
Essien and Petrov/Downing
Thoughts??
[Reply]
Petrov over Downing any day for me, started last season well, been playing a couple of competitive UEFA Cup games, scored goals pre-season and looked good, I tend to shy away from Boro players in this game.
Baines isnt confirmed as playing otherwise would be a good option, lost Carsley’s midfield protection so not much value at 6.0 for the likes of Neville for me, looks like Lescott will stay left-back first game I reckon
Staying away from Robbie Keane at start of season and Anelka too until i see Scolari line them up. Deco/Ballack a good choice instead of the extra on Lampard possibly
Fabregas and Ronaldo out, 2 big scorers, Gerrard not playing tomorrow either as got a knock, going to be an interesting first gameweek, looks like Berbatov is going to be at United before the season starts though, how are they going to line up now ?
Questions, questions, questions !!

Baines will have to play. With Hibbert out, Neville must play right back, which means Jagielka is the only one who can move into midfield to help out in their injury crisis.
Still unsure what to do about Fabregas….
Bentley seems the most likely choice but Spurs are away first up.
[Reply]
Giggs for Fabregas? How much is he in the Premier League game? Only 3.6 mil in Telegraph and only selected by 1% of people playing so far. Unless United get another striker in, surely he is dead cert to line up playing just off Tevez. Also is Nani banned early on?
[Reply]
i think your all mad, spend your money on at least two each from the following Hull, West Brom, Stoke, with one from Fulham, Middleborough, newcastle and West Ham. You see, these players will appreciate in value cos theyre so cheap, and when they do, you can use that money at the end of the season to carry over to next season, and to spend on the premier league website where every million unspent for the season equates to one hundred quid on their replica shirt/gear shop.
use this info wisely;

With Arsenal’s midfield decimated, I’m seriously starting to question the wisdom of giving Adebayor the armband for the first gameweek. I’m tempted to give it to A. Young instead, with all the rumours coming out about Hughes not staying, I fancy him to get off to a good start. It’s either him or fat frank for me. Really could do with the captains poll. Mark, when you’re ready……..

still Adebayor for me. If Arsenal win, which they should, there’s a fair chance he’ll play some part in that goal(s), and then who else are the plebs going to give bonus points to? I still think it’s easy points.

i think if/when berbs leaves he has a great chance of starting left mid…but he is a risk tho thats for sure! Why not go with Woodgate safest bet for spurs backling and good for a goal or 2 and maybe some bonus points?

Guys- what is the Chelsea back four going to be this season?
Need a cheaper alternative to Terry…

Is anyone else struggling to come up with three good defenders for week 2? All the home teams are ones that have a poor run of fixtures or i just don’t like their defence.

Took me a while to sort that one too. Carvalho, Woodgate and Young for me. Except I may now need to sell Woodagte because of Cesc and his dodgey ham (strings).

Guys,
need all of your help. Who would you go for? Howard and Bentley. Or Reina and Davies. IS it a case of both combos will get similar points at end of season. Obviously, davies is 2 million cheaper and means if i pick that combo i can add to other areas. It’s the only thing left bugging me. Bentley is more attractive than davies and reina just a little bit more assured of clean sheets….but then i lose that 2 million.
what y’all reckon?

Howard and Bentley.

I know it depends to some extent on the personnel…but generally
is it better to play 5 in mf and 2 strikers
or 4 mf and 3 up front?

yeah i have been toying with my lineup to work around this too.
i have a budget mid (de ridder) and a budget forward (zamora) and am banking on the forward having the btter chance of getting a goal and therefore more points so going 4-4-3

Reply by FFL Champion on August 13, 2008 12:31 pm:
how can you have a 443?

not a bad team. Pinky will be good for a few goals as he’ll get onto a good few corners. Slappy and dot will be solid but you may have trouble with red cards over the season. I’d probably get in Runt for Skippy- looked livelier and easier fixtures

Anybody got any thoughts on better selection:
RVP and Anelka/Berb
OR
Adebayor and Bent
[Reply]
providing Bent starts all the games then Adebayor and Bent - it’s cheaper.
