A little on the late side but still in time for the Tuesday morning coffee break – here’s my thoughts on what we can learn from last weekend’s proceedings – featuring Arhsavin, Milner, limping Black Cats and a penalty spot….
Twelve yards can seem a long way…
There were four penalties missed in all last weekend, with Fabregas, Defoe, Lampard and Dindane all causing their fantasy owners major frustration. There’s nothing quite so painful in the Fantasy Premier League game as the penalty missed points swing. That’s not the only concern of course, the worry now is that these players will be relieved of their spot-kick duties.
Lampard is safe, that’s been confirmed by Ancelotti. The other three are more precarious however, with Arshavin/Eduardo in contention for Arsenal and certainly Prince Boateng for Portsmouth. As for Defoe – Robbie Keane is the designated penalty taker when he plays. When it doesn’t, it could be that Kranjcar, Huddlestone and Modric (when fit), get a sniff. Regardless, I doubt whether this will make a difference to Defoe’s popularity this week. Wolves at home should see him pick up plenty of new owners – he’s already leading the way in this week’s FPL captain poll.
Spot-kick duties can make a big difference in fantasy terms. We saw that at Villa Park where John Carew converted the only successful penalty of the weekend. Previously Ashley Young and James Milner have held the responsibility for Villa. Owners of those players will have been much perturbed by Carew stepping up to cap the 3-0 win. It looks as though O’Neill is rotating the duties – given that Carew started on the bench, it’s unclear who would have taken the kick had Carew remained there.
Andrei was in his element…
I’ve spoken before about my fears for Arshavin as a slight rotation risk. That, coupled with the fact he’s been inconsistent compared to team-mate Fabregas, have found me reluctant to start the engines on an Arshavin bandwagon. Saturday’s goal against Stoke and more significantly, his role as a central attacker for Arsenal, certainly has one rolling now though. The Russian, classed as a midfielder across the fantasy games, apparently needed convincing to take up the the role according to Wenger. It didn’t look that way. He dazzled Stoke’s defence with his speed of feet and thought and looked as though he absolutely revelled in it.
Wenger may have Eduardo back for the trip to Anfield next weekend but has already stated that he is keen to give Arshavin an opportunity in that position away from home. Anfield would seem the perfect venue for such an experiment, given that Arshavin scored four goals in the corresponding fixture last season. A prolonged run of starts and increased attention from fantasy managers now looks assured, particularly with that deliciously tempting double fixture to come in gameweek 20 (por BOL).
Milner can take centre stage…
Milner scored heavily in the 3-0 win over Hull, perhaps removing any doubts that his new role in central midfield will impact on his fantasy returns. The jury is still out for me. It appears that Milner has relinquished spot-kick duties after his recent miss, plus he will certainly come up against stronger opponents than Hull in the coming weeks. One look at Villa’s forthcoming fixtures (mun sun STK ars LIV) is enough for me to think twice about investment – despite Milner’s current form. Perhaps I’m only thinking that way because I’m still bitter about getting rid three weeks ago. You decide.
Sunderland have well and truly dried up…
The Black Cats away form has done some serious damage to the fantasy output of their players. Sunday’s 1-0 defeat to Fulham meant that Steve Bruce’s side have not scored for 199 minutes of league football – seriously hurting owners of Darren Bent and Andy Reid. They will have to hope that things improve for this gameweek – Portsmouth at home certainly looks to be the platform for goals, but it’s worth noting that Sunderland’s dip in form has coincided with the injury to Lee Cattermole. Bruce has himself acknowledged that they have missed his presence but Jone’s suspension hasn’t helped wither. His return made no difference at the Cottage but Bent and Reid owners will be hoping a praying that this weekend brings an end to the drought. A continuation of their poor form cannot be ruled out though – confidence will have taken a knock and fixtures aren’t particularly in their favour after this gameweek (AVL mcy EVE bla)
Larsson returns to the radar…
Seb Larsson is an old friend of hours. Last time Birmingham briefly flirted with the Premier League, his set-plays and midfield creativity made him a popular fantasy target. It took Larsson’s two goals at Wigan last weekend to bring him back to our attention. Up until now Birmingham’s attacking temptations have been limited to Lee Bowyer and perhaps, at a push, Chucho Benitez up front. His goal at Wigan, coupled with Larsson’s exploits, will now see fantasy managers pursue Birmingham’s budget wares with renewed vigour. The fixture list over the next few gameweek’s (WHM BLA eve) point to continued returns at both ends of the field. Bowyer continues to be the biggest draw in attacking terms. Take your pick from Johnson, Dann and Ridgewell at the other end.

Roman Pavlyuchenko may be going to Arsenal in Jan laughs…
if he did hed be straight in my team!
His agent says they’re interested and we all know what a bunch of fine, upstanding individuals agents are.
there was another rumour c.cole was going there also! now that would be a bargain
It’s just his agent stirring up other clubs, like Zenit, who were previously interested, and have now backed away slightly.
I’d be happy to see him at Arsenal, he’s a decent enough player and wouldn’t get in the way too much when RVP returned to fitness.
Really Wenger should be looking at defensive midfielder and goalkeepers. But we say this every year, and he never does.
A. Gerrard and Jerome
B. Giggs and Defoe
Help needed! A or B, All vote now…
Have the first option, might be a mistake selling Gerrard.
B
B
B
B
B.
Which is a shame, as I have A. Hmmm…
B it is, but when Drog goes ACON, Torres coming in as I want a liverpool attacking player.
liking the new format on the recent comments section mark! keep up the good work!
Trying out some new code. This may also cause issues at high traffic periods but, if so, I can always disable it for those periods. We’ll see how it goes.
good on ya
yeah the weekends be very busy on here but during the week it shouldn’t be that bad, i hope!
Some of the links to the comments, on the recent comments section, don’t re-direct me. Is that just my crappy browser?
Not working for me either. I’m on Firefox 3.5.5.
who can i put in for Dunne
You’ll need to tell us more TheRags. Who have you got already? What’s your budget?
at the back i have Shawcross/A.Cole/Evra/Dunne/Wilson.
I have nothing in the bank
You really should link your team to your name as there are loads of variables to consider when recommending options for people such as who they have already, who they may want to bring in, what is their favoured formation etc etc.
Check out the FAQ at the top of the page to see how to link your team it is pretty simple
Some good options are: Evra,Ivanovic, A.Cole or someone like Ridgewell/Dann or Scharner to save cash for upgrading elsewhere.
Depending on who you already have some good options include:
a blackburn defender: Samba possibly
Scharner
Maybe a Birmingham defender – Dann or Johnson?
Insua might be worth a look.
Struggling with my transfer this week. Looking at either:
A. Hangeland to a Chelsea defender
OR
B. Elliott to Valencia
Any strong feelings one way or the other?
Does hangleland to Ivanovic and Dempsey to Reid make sense?
looking for some additional feedback
Oui. Fulham have tough fixtures coming up, miss GW17. Chelsea and Sunderland have good fixtures for decent returns.
Thinking about Hangeland to Ivanovic myself, along with a few others like Cole, Carvalho or Evra. If I go with Ivanovic, I could get in Valencia or Lennon as well.
Interesting tweet re modric playing 70mins in a friendly. He is looking cracking value if he comes back flying and spurs fixtures do look nice hmmm…
I’m really keen to get some Bolton or Arsenal in before gw20.
I was thinking Benayoun for Taylor, or Verm for G.Johnson.
I can’t afford arsh and already have fabregas.
What do you reckon?
why are people still persisting with expensive defenders?
utd are down to the bare bones yet everyone wants evra. ivanovic is a rotation risk at chelsea. dunne has tough fixtures coming up. terry and vidic are too expensive.
why not just stick to cheap defenders and spend teh money further up field?
Good point tosey. I’ve stuck with cheapies all year and I’ve done fine. I just have some cash to spend and not sure of the best place to put it, so I was entertaining a switch to an Evra, Carv, Ivanovic, etc. I’ve got Drogs, Defoe & Bent up front, Fabs & Gerrard in midfield. Open to suggestions.
id upgrade elliott to a valencia/milner/lennon/benayoun/swp
i think one of those and carr would outscore elliott and evra
Cheers. Looking at Valencia or SWP at the moment. Like Lennon, but have Defoe, so I may want to go with one of the others. Thanks for your thoughts.
Because things change.
i fail to see what has changed qubit?
I didn’t mean it had changed. But it will.
guess its down to opinion but i dont see the point in it myself when it seems the likes of blackburn stoke birmingham are also keeping clean sheets and are much cheaper alternatives
Dont get me wrong, for now most of the sensible money is with cheaper defensive options. However, i very much doubt it will remain so all season. Be prepared for the change over is what im saying
I agree. I am going through a painful process of transfering cash from back to front over the weeks. Probably been too optimistic in the past waiting for that 6point haul when they do score
If your still there mark would you mind giving your views on my lamps – arshavin transfer and trebling up on chelsea defenders? (cole, ivanovich, carvalho for alexander and song)
cheers if you have the time
I’m not Mark obviously, but I’ve toyed with the idea of tripling up on Chelsea defenders a few times.
I say go for it!
It would probably give you loads of points, and also a certain coolness aura that would make everyone think you’re the coolest cat around.
youre going to tie up around £20m on three players that at their best will probably get you 18pts and at their worst will get you 3-6
surely three cheap defenders totalling 13m and the 7m used up field would bring more points?
That reasoning is a bit flawed mate, and you know it as much as I do.
I see your point – but that reasoning you used there can be used to prove anything.
And not in a good way, damnit!
tosey it would be more like 20m tied up on three players who will likely avg 5pts/gw over that period. Their is very few players in the game will avg anywhere near this (and certainly not the cheap defenders!)
i would keep Lamps Dino, while Chelsea will be solid at the back over the next while they will still also be strong upfront and Lamps will be involved in alot of it, especially when Drogs and all go away and he is always another captain choice to have.
I hear ya rock but I am not sold on lamps at the mo. I am not 100% confident on capt him so no point having a 12.5m player if thats the case. The move would leave me with rooney/fabs as capt choices.
Tosey if you had three chelsea def in for their recent run of 6cs in a row then it is like having 3 strikers in your team every week (not counting bonus, gls, assists). I am still not sold on the idea but getting a strong positive feel for it since I cant see bargain defenders getting anywhere near the same points
well points are good but coolness aura is where I wanna be
Need to get rid of Bullard & Dunne. Have a bit of cash in the bank
Can’t decide who to get in over Giggs, Valencia, Lennon & Reid. Thoughts?
Although Utd have a busy schedule over the next few weeks, Can they really afford to rest Giggs? would Gibson even be a decent shout?
MU have better fixtures than Spurs.
Giggs and Valencia will rotate during Xmas. Unlikely that Lennon will.
Gibson is not worth a shout.
I think Giggs offers the best value. Although to be honest all 3 are good options.
Don’t think they will rotate Valencia. He’s young and probably wants to play every game. Giggs on the other hand is a totally different matter. Lennon has shitty fixtures after this week and I could almost bet my left nut that he will get a whole lot of 2’s this month.
“shitty fixtures”?! What the hell are you on about? They don’t play Man U, Arsenal or Chelsea until GW 34 in April. In the next 10 gameweeks they have 6 home matches against Wolves, Man City, West Ham, Hull, Fulham and Aston Villa. Their only hard away game is the Liverpool game, the others are Blackburn, Fulham and Birmingham.
I have no idea how you’ve concluded that Tottenham have “shitty fixtures” coming up.
You’re right, now go get at least three Tottenham players.
Seriously, you think they are shitty fixtures? I have no Tottenham players at the moment. I’m honestly asking if you rate those fixtures as “shitty”.
you’re probably right about Gibson but he’s obviusouly been told to shoot on site which makes me think twice. Also, with Fletcher potentially playing in defence he’s going to get chances.
probably going to wait till after champions league but probably end up with Valencia & Lennon.
Valencia plays on the right, Giggs on the left or central midfield. thoose 2 will not really be rotated
Giggs and Nani/Park will be rotated
Valencia has pretty much cemented his spot on the right hand side with only Obertan as a threat and park a little bit but he will play most games.
Can someone explain to me why people are jumping on Lennon? Is it that no-one has Defoe or wtf is going on? They have Wolves next, but after that it’s pretty rocky for Tottenham. Especially Lennon who doesn’t perform well against harder opposition. I do get Defoe, but Lennon… mehhh.
It’s because he’s had a few great scoring weeks against weaker teams, and people predict this to be one as well.
I’m not getting near any Tottenham player unless I get some injury, mind.
I get that, but people on this site should have more insight than looking at past performances.
Why is that? Past performances is a great indicator for what a player is capable of.
If they see similarity in those games and this then I say go for it.
I meant that the fixtures aren’t looking great.
I agree with you on that one mate. I’ll stay away.
I like what you have going on on your midfield Gargs. I’m heading the same direction, just need to save my transfer this week to do a triple next week
Thanks mate.
We should be careful with Dunn and Hunt though. Wouldn’t want Dunn to be yellow forever, like some players are. And Hunt’s fixtures are about to turn sour, bleh.
Aaah, I meant the trio you played last week. Got rid of Dunn prior to GW14 because I thought he was going to pick up the card soon, plus he had a few bad fixtures coming up and whaddayaknow he got injured GW14
Don’t have Hunt. I’m looking for a cheap mid like Bowyer, Larsson or maybe even Stanislas.. West Ham’s fixtures aren’t half bad. This to accomondate Arshavin in the middle. I think people are looking past Arsenal’s fixtures this month, they look juicy to me.
I agree with your reasoning here. Let’s hope you’re right!
Anyone thinking of getting gibson? worth a punt?
Absolutely not.
why?
Not proven, big rotation risk.
need to get rid of bullard, My midfield is fabs, dunn, reid, dempsey, bullard and no money so i have 5.9 to spend any ideas?
Bowyer?
not really
I’m considering it (see above) but will end up bottling it and possibly regretting it
He might even play in the defence now that United’s out of defenders.
quick question lads
when drogba leaves for african nations cup any1 planning simply to replace him with anelka??
That will be an option I and many others will consider, I’m sure.
anelka better start scoring soon. he’s only got 3 goals this season which is pathetic…
or possibly Lampard..
my one free transfer this week will be gabby out for either one of the big guns… i.e. torres, drogba or rooney. But for some mad reason im considering robinho… reasons being city are playing bolton who are conceding goals at a canter and city will also be boosted after that win against chelsea. i really do rate robinho even though his ego can take over a bit but quetion is… should i go for the safe option of torres, rooney or take a punt on the risk of robinho who mite act as a differential this week??
Don’t do it. Robinho might not even play in the PL come Jan.
anyone know if david dunn is back this w’end? blackburn away at hull…
With all these injuries in the strike force area does anyone wish Arshavin was still registered as a striker this is mainly for non Arshavin owners.
No.
I been ruled out of my Sunday football team this week due to Rotator Cuff Tendonitis not happy turning into a crock.
friends,
i have just (hopefully) attached the link to my team to my name. I’m awaiting news on Rooney, if he’s unfit i’m going to sack him off ( along with ab Faye) for Defoe (and Wes Brown. controversial). If you would look at my team, i welcome any and all opinions. Get nasty….
not sure about ure team but i do love ure name.
3 Birmingham slightly extreme.
The injury too Rooney could be a blessing for you as I think more people need to start putting money in midfield.
I wouldn’t touch Wes Brown better value to be had
anyone know if david dunn is back this w’end? blackburn away at hull…
No news I will try find out.
We get alot of news in South Africa about Blackburn because of Benni.
So with all utd’s injuries. I hear they are playing this formation tonight: 0-11-0. Charge!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FF_kvs6tkpk
Yesshhh, this is tioght.
1-8-1 is their ideal formation…evra the only fit defender and owen upfront on his own along with the 8 midfielders
bet ossie ardiles would agree with it
He would probably point out the glaring weakness though…not enough forwards
Best offside trap ever.
team name or login on here? Got Benzemabob from Paddy Crerand this summer when he was talking on MUTV about united transfer targets and could not pronounce Benzema at all! I couldnt stop laughing at it…
I’m glad Shawcross is winning his fitness battle
Crippled with injuries, suspensions and hull players(bullard!) I need to play my wild card what do you think of:
Sorensen,Hart
Cole A,Brown,Cuellar,Carr,Paintsil
Fabregas,Larsson,Dunn,O’Hara,Lennon
Drogba,Rooney,Rodallega
Not sure about Rodallega but the rest are quite good.
and you might be interested to know four of those players are on the suspension tightrope.
Hmm Thanks for that might risk the tightrope or switch out carr for Dann. Leaves me with 7.2 mil for a striker if I get rid of the ROD any ideas?
Saha looks OK if you can stomach the inevitable missed minutes through injury. Good player when fit and in the FF form of his career.
Hmmm Mr.Glass could be worth a gamble
A GAMBLe is exactly what he is.
No doubt he’s a gamble and you don’t want him in until after GW17. But Everton can’t get any worse and he’s their main striker. If only he wasn’t a sicknote he’d be a lot more than £7m or so.

Joe Hart Speaks
this is my team for this week:
hart(sorenson)
dann evra shawcross (vermaelen) (zayatte)
fabregas lennon milner eagles (dunn)
bent drogba rooney
should i consider bringing anyone in?
Don’t know. I will for one play Vermaelen depending on Torres fitness. I think this will be a toight game with Liverpool concentrating on defending rather than attacking especially in the absence of Torres.
You might also want to hedge by playing both Sörensen and Dann. Wigan didn’t score against Stoke last season and I don’t see them scoring now.
cheers overtone. i was thinking bringing in ivanovic for vermaelen as a long term option. would be a 4pt hit. is it worth it?
Well Arsenal’s upcoming fixtures look good, but if Arsenal has to play Silvestre they might be in trouble against all kind of offence
I’d keep an eye on the situation in the Arsenal defence for sure. I’m holding on to Vermaelen myself, everyone in my mini has sold him. One reason is that I got him in at 6.5 in the beginning of the season, so he isn’t really a 7m defender in my eyes. Ivanovic is a good shout, I’m planning on getting him myself to place Warnock. Don’t know if it’s worth a 4pt hit though.
Keeping faith with Vermalenen myself.
Burnley and Hull after Liverpool.
Great differential nowadays too..
or not, but atleast in my mini this is the case…
