Scout Scribbles – Krul Worry for Magpies

Tim Krul is sent home from Holland’s training camp with an elbow problem. Gareth Barry is nearing a return for City, Brad Friedel is determined to hold off the challenge of Hugo Lloris between the posts for Tottenham, while John Terry joins Ashley Cole on the sidelines with less than a week until Chelsea’s trip to QPR:

Alan Pardew’s injury worries show no sign of abating right now. With Danny Simpson ruled out and Fabricio Coloccini a doubt, the Magpies boss now has Tim Krul’s fitness to fret over after the keeper was sent home from Holland training with an elbow problem. Krul featured for his country in a 2-0 win over Turkey on Friday evening but now faces a wait over the prognosis – with a trip to Everton up next, Fantasy faith in the Toffees assets looks set to grow.

Brad Friedel has spoken of his determination to see off the challenge of Spurs’ new keeper Hugo Lloris:

When I signed for Tottenham, I signed as a stop-gap while Tottenham looked for a long-term goalkeeper. Tottenham deserve a long-term goalkeeper. Right now I believe the shirt is mine to lose, I believe the manager came out and said that. If that’s the case then great.

Friedel was voted Man of the Match in Spurs’ previous game at home to Norwich, with a string of saves denying the Canaries a win. Ahead of a run of games that sees Spurs square up to (rdg, QPR, AVL) in the next four, the US international still seems to be in the driving seat but with Tottenham failing to register a single clean sheet under Andre Villas-Boas so far, faith in their defensive assets has taken a real dip, despite those favourable fixtures.

Elsewhere, Joe Allen is expected to be fit for Wales’ game with Serbia. The Liverpool midfielder missed the 2-0 defeat by Belgium on Friday due to a virus but is now expected to shake off any after-effects and take his place in the squad. John Terry has joined Ashley Cole on the sidelines for England’s match with Ukraine due to an ankle, with the pair battling to be ready for Chelsea’s Gameweek 4 trip to QPR.

Zoltan Gera is expected to be fit for Hungary’s match with Holland – the West Brom midfielder was subbed off against Andorra on Friday with an Achilles knock but has since returned to training. Jonny Evans has handed Northern Ireland a fitness boost ahead of Tuesday’s match with Luxembourg – the centre-half picked up an ankle knock in last week’s defeat to Russia but has come through a training session unscathed.

Gareth Barry revealed he is closing in on a comeback for City. The midfielder – who has yet to feature this term for the champions – went on to say:

I had a double hernia operation which meant an initial four weeks out, but then I tore a muscle in rehab which set me back a little bit, but I don’t think I’m too far off now – touch wood! I’m just taking things one day at a time but I’m feeling quite strong again which is really good. I’ve had two outings with the Elite Development Squad now – 45 minutes against Middlesbrough and 80 against Liverpool and I felt a lot better in the second game so things are progressing nicely.

Barry’s absence – allied with Nigel De Jong’s sale to AC Milan – has handed Jack Rodwell the chance to cement his place as Yaya Toure’s central midfield partner in a couple of City’s games thus far. With Barry reluctant to put a date on his comeback, Rodwell seems set to continue in the first XI for next weekend’s trip to Stoke as City look to register their first away win of the new campaign.

Hodgsen is playing exactly the same against the Ukraine with the exception of John Terry.

I think it's good. We need to start sitcking to a single team to build some chemistry. It's bad as a Baines owner, but i'm sure it won't make a difference on the weekend.

Happy with Roy in the overall ?
Seems to me groups come relatively easy but actual finals cause problems -
Is Roy the man to overcome this say even a semi final appearance ?

I think he gives us the best chance with current players we have. He has the experience to do it, and England have generally played a lot better under Hodgsen, even at the Euros. In the knock out stages anything can happen though.

Good to hear. I find it funny that Sterling is now called up minutes after Rodgers was saying he needs to stay in the U19's! What is that about, it's not like he's going to get any gametime.

Croatia is one of the best european team and we always play great against top sides and i predict easy win in belgioum

also,we didnt give a sh*it agianst macedonia since we knew that we are getting easy 3pts,also we never play great against such DEFESIVE teams who have no inttention to go forward

everyone knew that we would win 3pts without any big problems

it was hard match, indeed but top sides like we always win when they have ,,bad day''

game against belgioum will be far more easire than macedonia since they will atack

    Pre-GW4 Press Conference

Interview by Alan Brazil with MJ6987 (manager of Atalanta)

Alan: Mor-ning!!!! Well, MJ, you’ve had an absolute baptism of fire in your first season in Serie A haven’t you pal?

MJ: Yeah, you could say that! When the fixtures came out I saw that I had two of the big names in the first 3 weeks – starting with Forca’s Lazio outfit and a clash with Milanista’s AC Milan in GW3, with a match against the lower profile Grounderz (Cagliari) sandwiched inbetween.

Alan: Aye, so you must be quite pleased with your start eh?

MJ: Yes, well, I was quite confident going into week one despite tough opposition, but I came up against a Forca Inter team in rampant form – my score of 75 was decent enough but braces from Petric and Michu pretty much put paid to any hopes I had of a debut victory as Forca powered his way to 93 points. I shifted through the gears in week two and over-powered relative newcomer Grounderz 79-44 despite taking a 4 point hit – although it was just a relief to get off the mark. I then continued this momentum into week 3 with a real morale boosting victory against an uncharacteristically off-form Milanista (71-58) which means that I am currently lying 4th in Serie A.

Alan: And, after some respite with the international breaks, you are straight back into the big games with another great match up against Mark (Palermo)…although from what I’ve heard on that podcast, he can be an absolute numpty, a bit of a tube sometimes?

MJ: Err, no, I think you’re thinking of his co-host maybe? Anyway, yeah, Mark was one of the “dangermen” that I picked out pre-season – I mean, his record speaks for itself with an incredible five top 5k finishes including two inside the top 500! And, although he hasn’t had the best of starts, you know with managers like that its only a matter of time before they start performing – I can only hope that it is not quite yet!

Alan: Aye, Mark’ll be getting absolute pelters from Granddad if he loses to yourself as a relative newcomer to the game?

MJ: I think its “Granville” but, although I’ve been under the radar, I’ve done OK to date…a 15k finish in my debut season, followed my my biggest achievement to date, a top 500 finish and then a more modest top 10k last year, but, no, nothing compared to what Mark has achieved so its going to be a very tough game – good luck to Mark

Alan: OK, we’ll wrap it up there – cheers pal

    MJ: Cheers Al.

Keep Ba( just reallized he is not as good as I thought and I think Pardew could go back to having him on the wing, with the current formation not working and Cisse failing to produce with Ba next to him or get
    a) Jelavic- I am planning to get Baines in the next 2 gameweeks too so it may be too much
    b) Bent- takes penalties and is the ultimate differential, but plays for Villa

You only brought Ba in GW3 - one game! What made you realise Ba wasn't as good as you thought? The last game where he got two points? The game where he had 5 attempts on goal (3 on target)? Just curious.

Yeah it was kind of a knee jerk transfer in from me, as my team was fffed. What changed my mind as I analyzed his conversion rate compared to other forwards and it is pretty horrible, the situation at Newcastle also has me thinking he will start playing on the wing pretty soon. I guess it was some kind of a nostalgic feeling from last season for him and Newcastle in general that tripped me up. I just thought that I should admit my mistake and move on, despite trying to beat the dead horse.

I've been thinking about bringing Ba in but it's hard to look past HBA for Newcastle cover.

By the look of things having no Newcastle cover may not be a bad idea, the form is bad. And no options are really playing that well, and the fixtures are not that good.

This is only my second season here in the FPL, and the most remarkable fact that I observed was that people here tend to consider the investment made in the backline as more of a waste. I don't understand that how people with defenders from WHU, NOR, REA or even SOU even think that the culmulative money saved there, can provide them with extra points upfront? We are talking about reducing the value of 4-5 players at the back for upgrading just 1 or 2 frontliners.

    Come to think of it,

    I have,

    Cech Mignolet
    Gibbs BAE Lescott Skrtel McAuley

I know that I can easily downgrade Cech/BAE/Lescott and even Skrtel and get around 4.0/5.0 more in the bank but really, is it worth it? Though the big guns aren't kepping Cleanies atm, but am sure they eventually will.

So, in a nutshell, if i play 3-4-3 and the 3 big defenders (and GK) DO manage to keep a cleansheet for their team, I may get about 15-18 points, defending on bonus etc. On the other hand, what if my defence together managed 5 points, if I downgraded each of them and the attacker which was upgraded by that money, say, scores 1 goal and 1 assist, still I am only getting a total of 13 points without considering if my 'expensive' defender gets on the scoresheet.

So, is the cheap defence worth it?

You make some excellent points - Lots of people point to 10+ clean sheets for a 5m defender over a season and ask what a striker who scores that would be worth.

The problem is that bonus points disproportionately favour attacking players and this, combined with their increased likelihood to get assists means that attacking players will, on average, score more. Therefore money invested in attack is more efficient. Also, having a good Captaincy option each week is essential as the points you get from your Captain are about 1/3 of this game.

However, you can over-invest in attack to the point of waste - You can only play 7 attacking players and so have the choice of having a cheap 8th or rotating with potentially wasted money on the bench.

Therefore, my philosophy is this; Get the best attacking 6 you can afford, the best 2 remaining players in terms of value/rotation, then invest the rest in as attacking a defence as you can. Players like Baines, Huth, Riise who play in decent defences but yield attacking returns can be the difference in this game. Finding the less obvious attacking defenders (e.g. Wilson of Stoke or Olsson of West Brom or Boyce of Wigan), has basically become a (slightly tragic) hobby of mine!

If only Carroll hadn't got injured Nolan and Jarvis would be great value at West Ham.

He has his critics but you have to appreciate Big Sam from and FPL perspective: values clean sheets, likes plenty of crosses, plays percentages, not prone to rotating. You know exactly what you're getting. He's arguably ahead of his time...

Carroll enhances their value a lot, but I still think Nolan is a great pick.

Will Ciaran Clark H to Swansea be wiser than
Pogrebnyak H to Spurs for my team selection in GW4 ?

I think Clark's a decent defensive option this week but I'd usually pick the striker in that scenario.

i've had they same sort of dilemma, i posted for people's opinion on either Clark or Rangel to play in my defence, the majority went for Rangel, but i've decided to swim against the tide and play Clark, he was great in the last game v Newcastle, i think Villa will turn around fairly quickly. So,Clark over Pog for me, Spurs are due a clean sheet too!!
