The pre-season schedule starts to pick up pace now, with as many as nine Premier League sides taking part in friendlies over the past couple of evenings. We cast an eye over the action, with the likes of Gareth Bale, Olivier Giroud, Romelu Lukaku, Kevin Mirallas, Dimitar Berbatov and Jay Rodriguez all amongst the goals:

Swindon 1 Tottenham 1
Andre Villas-Boas rolled out a 4-3-3 formation for Tottenham’s draw at Swindon on Tuesday evening. Gareth Bale got his account for the summer underway by bagging the visitors’ only goal – the Welshman was fielded on the right of the front three but was one of 10 changes made at the break, with a further substitution taking place on the hour mark as Villas-Boas utilised 22 players over the 90 minutes. Frustratingly for Fantasy managers, the Spurs boss admitted he will maintain these tactical switches over the next few friendlies in order to build up squad fitness:

“We haven’t stopped training and that’s a good thing for our physical stamina during these games. We’ll continue to use 45-45 minutes to get everyone to a level that’s good for resistance, stamina and endurance. Football-wise, we had some good moments, but also some things that we need to work on. We had some good chances and the result could have been different, but overall we had good, positive moments to take from the game.”

Colchester 1 West Ham 2
Sam Allardyce’s side registered their fourth successive victory of the summer with a narrow win on Tuesday night. Joe Cole opened the scoring thanks to a somewhat fortuitous deflection before his corner was headed home by James Collins – the latter highlighting his potential for the season ahead, having been handed a 4.5 price tag by Fantasy Premier League (FPL). Allardyce made plenty of changes after the break and the alterations saw new keeper Adrian (who played the full 90 minutes) concede just before the final whistle.

Post-match, though, the West Ham manager’s comments on Andy Carroll’s heel injury were the main talking point. Given the Hammers strong opening six fixtures, the big centre-forward has been pencilled in by many after finishing last term so impressively but Allardyce was somewhat sceptical of Carroll’s chances of making it in time for the season opener at home to Cardiff:

“Andy is still recovering. He has got four weeks or more to go before he starts full training. His rehab is going pretty well at the moment.. but being fit and being ready to play are two different things…If we are going to put our lads through six weeks of preparation and then Andy gets fit with two days to go, you would not expect us to play him, would you?”

Motherwell 2 Newcastle 4
Alan Pardew rolled out a 4-2-3-1 with Moussa Sissoko in the double-pivot and Yoan Gouffran fielded as the lone striker as the Magpies grabbed victory at Fir Park. Both players found the net in a comfortable win, with the latter mirroring Harris Vuckic’s contribution by producing a goal and assist for the visitors, while Sylvain Marveaux was also on the scoresheet in a game that saw Pardew make eight changes over the second period. Papiss Cisse remains unavailable due to an ongoing dispute with the club and has been omitted from their tour of Portugal.

Pardew talked up the prospects of Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa for the season ahead, having handed the Frenchman the armband for the match. The January signing – who comes in at 4.5 in Fantasy Premier League – could be one to consider, judging by his manager’s comments:

“He’s a leader. That hasn’t really came out so far because of the language barrier, but you can see why he has been a captain at other clubs. I wanted to reflect that. I think he could be an important player for us.”

Vietnam 1 Arsenal 7
The Gunners racked up seven goals for the second successive friendly, with Olivier Giroud once again looking sharp up front. Having scored twice in their first friendly of the summer last weekend, the Frenchman went one better and notched a hat-trick – handing Fantasy managers food for thought if the Gunners fail in their bid for Gonzalo Higuain. Arsene Wenger made seven changes at the break and a further four during the second 45 – youngster Chuba Akpom bagged a brace to add to his weekend strike, while Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Miquel were also amongst the goals for the in-form north London outfit.

Singha All Stars 0 Chelsea 1
Jose Mourinho also made plenty of changes as Chelsea got their pre-season off to a winning start. Andre Schurrle and Eden Hazard were afforded 45 minutes each on the left flank, while Romelu Lukaku led the line (and scored the game’s only goals from the spot) before being replaced by Demba Ba at the break. With the Blues’ Spanish contingent, in addition to Brazil duo David Luiz and Oscar, handed time off due to their Confederations Cup duties, Lucas Piazon was tucked in behind Lukaku in “the hole†in the first 45 before a half-time alteration saw Kevin De Bruyne move to the middle, with Victor Moses handed the right flank role. Frank Lampard missed the match with an Achilles problem – Mourinho stressed this was no more than a precautionary measure and expects the midfielder to be back training in a couple of days’ time.

Prior to the match, Mourinho shared his thoughts on tactics for the season ahead. The Blues boss revealed his default formation will be a 4-2-3-1 before admitting he was a little spoiled for choice when it came to options to play in “the holeâ€.

“It (4-2-3-1) is my favourite system. Sometimes I change the triangle. Sometimes I play with one in front of the defenders and two players up and sometimes I play with double midfielders and No.10.This is a team where we have three or four players who like very much to be a No.10. Kevin de Bruyne likes it, Oscar likes it, Juan Mata likes it, Eden Hazard likes it. They can play in other positions but they like that No.10 position. It is a natural system for all these players to play.”

LD Alajuelense 1 Fulham 3
Fulham’s front two were amongst the goals again as Martin Jol’s side registered a second successive win on their Costa Rica tour. Bryan Ruiz supplied the assist for Steve Sidwell to nod home the Cottagers’ opener and also found the net late on against his old club, whilst Dimitar Berbatov took his tally to three goals in two games after slotting home a spot-kick following a foul on Alex Kacaniklic in the box. Kieran Richardson started at left-back, with Patjim Kasami and Ashkan Dejagah handed the wing roles as Jol rang the changes from the previous match.

UE Llagostera 1 Southampton 2
Jay Rodriguez was the main man for Southampton as Mauricio Pochettino’s side kicked off their pre-season schedule with a victory. The former Burnley man was at the double and also had a goal disallowed in the first-half, as he quickly make a case for inclusion in our Fantasy squads for the season ahead. Pochettino made 10 changes at the break, with Rodriguez the only player to stay on after half-time, though he was eventually replaced just before the 70-minute mark. Victor Wanyama made his Saints debut, though Emmanuel Mayuka and Jos Hooiveld missed out with knocks.

Accrington Stanley 1 Everton 4
Roberto Martinez earned his first win as Toffees boss with a comfortable stroll at the Store First Stadium. Martinez used 19 players over the 90 minutes, with Joel Robles playing the full match, while fellow new boy Antolin Alcaraz climbed off the bench at the break to make his debut. Kevin Mirallas provided a goal and assist for the Toffees, while Darron Gibson, Victor Anichebe and Leon Osman all found the net, with Seamus Coleman providing the assist for the latter’s header. The Toffees boss –who will monitor Steven Pienaar after he limped off with a knock towards the end – was pleased with his players’ displays as he looks to introduce a more possession-based attacking style of play:

“Every player has been working and that is a very positive thing. The composure of when to pass the ball and when to run forward was good. We had to defend at times. Accrington showed a real spirit and we wish them well for the season. The understanding between the players is clear. In the attacking third, they look really lively and we’re still in that period of working with a lot of volume so it’s pleasing to see such a bright performance.”

FC Chiasso 0 Sunderland 1
Emanuel Giaccherini made his debut as the Black Cats scraped a narrow win in yesterday’s practice match. The Italian was handed a role on the left, with Adam Johnson fielded on the opposite flank, while his compatriot Vito Mannone lasted the full 90 minutes between the sticks. Paolo Di Canio opted for a 4-4-1-1 with Stephane Sessegnon in “the hole†and utilised 19 players over the match – Connor Wickham climbed off the bench to replace Jozy Altidore and grabbed the only goal, volleying home from a Jack Colback cross.

    Any decent leagues around that I could join?

    Also, is there a doubles league again this year - if so, anyone looking for a partner?

        It's probably a bit early, but do you know if there's a "Top 10,000 any season" league code knocking about yet? There was one last year, but I only discovered this site a couple of months into the season and I missed it.

    REPOST

    Has anyone been following Brek Shea (Stoke Mid)

    He was a hot prospect when he arrived but never really was given a chance. Scored for the U.S. recently.

    Could he play for Stoke this season?

    Seems like a decent PUNT;)

          Fair point - but squeezing out an extra .5 here will only offer me a few options at 5.5 : Anelka (not convinced), The Greek name twins in Helenius / Cornelius (again not convinced, the former would be influenced by a benteke move), 6.0 doesn't fair much better with JRod only real option.. Food for thought - thanks...

    Time for the daily FFS League post 😉

    Want to have a chance of joining a competitive league then click on the link. The idea is to have 5 classic leagues for FFS posters to test their skills against other FFS posters. The league spots will be determined by your previous best overall rank in FPL. To have a chance to join fill out the submission form embedded in the link.

    http://allthingsfpl.wordpress.com/2013/06/28/atfpl-leagues-for-ffs-posters/

    For anyone just looking for a league to join, the catch all league code is 47-351

    So far the leagues Overall Rank cut off points are;

    RVP = 1 through 189
    Bale = 190 through 434
    Baines = 435 through 835
    Mata = 836 through 1277
    Walcott = 1278 through 2442

    These cut off points are based on the original 10 posters per league. It won't stay at ten as 124 posters have already registered and the aim is for as many posters to be able play.

    If it was 20 per league the cut off rank would be 23375 so plenty of space for those wanting to enter 🙂

    20 poster per league cut off points;

    RVP = 1 through 434
    Bale = 435 through 1277
    Baines = 1288 through 4057
    Mata = 4058 through 9086
    Walcott = 9087 through 23375

    Thanks

    Have a stronger midfield now...

    Marshall - Vorm (perfect rotation)

    Collins - Baines - Faye - Clyne- Parr

    Silva - Bale - Cabaye - Kacaniklic - Brady

    RVP - Lambert - Altidore

    Thoughts please...

    So a page or so back I posted about Mirallas and his difference in points when classed as a forward compare to what they would have been when classed as a midfielder. I've tried to take it a bit further and compare this with the average of other players.

    Defenders who played over 1000 minutes last season averaged 3.21 Points per 90 Minutes.

    Midfielders who played over 1000 minutes last season averaged 3.92 Points per 90 Minutes.

    Forwards who played over 1000 minutes last season averaged 5.01 Points per 90 Minutes.

    If Mirallas had of been classed as a Midfielder rather than a Forward last year he would have got an extra 14 points.
    6 for the extra point Midfielders get for goals
    and
    8 for the clean sheet points.
    Taking him from 96 up to 110.

    Classed as a forward with the 96 points this would average 4.73 points per game which is below the average for a forward.

    Classed as a midfield with the 110 points this would average 5.42 points per game which is above the average for a midfielder.

    If Coleman had of been classed as a Defender rather than a Midfielder last year he would have got an extra 36 points for clean sheet points.
    Taking him from 74 up to 110.

    Classed as a midfielder with the 74 points this would average 3.08 points per game which is below the average for a midfielder.

    Classed as a defender with the 110 points this would average 4.57 points per game which is above the average for a defender.

    I can't think of any other reclassed players off the top of my head but if anyone can I will work out the differences for those as well.

        Michu averaged 5.7 points per 90 minutes when classed as a Midfielder.

        He would have lost 30 points if he had been a Forward (18 from goals scored and 12 from clean sheets) taking him from 190 to 160.

        He would have averaged 4.8 points per 90 minutes if he had been classed as a Forward.

          Very, VERY interesting. So Michu seriously over-performed as a midfielder last season (as we all know), but would have been slightly below average if he'd been classed as a FWD. Makes me feel a bit better about not owning him at all last season out of stubbornness. And something to be wary of for the upcoming season.

      Given that he played a fair bit second half of last season and banged them in for fun in addition to his biggest admirer being Mourinho I'd say he'd play a fair bit. Mourinho was apparently the one who convinced Lamps to stay also. I'm am keeping a close eye on pre-season friendlies, but with those matches you tend to give your knew boys a run around, so we might not get much insight.

    So Wild Rover says you can't get a sticky or hot topic if your post is opinion-based.

    Well I'll tell you what, you need big opinions in FPL! You can't judge stats unless you end up with a strong opinion of how to go forward. To say my post was not based on stats because it didn't have any numbers is misguided. I am basing an opinion on the stats that we all know from the season before.

    It's glaringly obvious that there is favouritism on here. There is no place in this cruel world for a gravless nobody it seems.

      Sorry to hear that Black Sheep.

      I wouldn't pay attention to the rep or whether the topic is made a stick/hot topic or not, its only as important as you deem it. Plenty of people here read all the posts. Stats just form a relatively convenient way of analysing performances, which in turn make forming opinions about players and teams a little bit easier. They are not the be all and end all, and as the cliche goes, you can use stats to prove anything.

      Stick around, unless you start being offensive or abusive, I'm sure plenty around here will welcome your presence. Indeed, this place would become extremely boring if the opinions left. There's only so much OPTA stats and spreadsheets we can take, after all 😉

      Do you care if your post is made a hot topic or into a sticky post?

      I agree that by nature, the selection of such posts is subjective though and that a compelling argument based on opinion is just as valid in terms of being "hulked" as one based on stats.

      With Bale on a billboard and video game he is worth more to Spurs even from a non-football point of view than ManU can pay their way out of. The Bale to ManU rumors are basic media spin by the ManU management to divert attention away from the recent bad press surrounding the Tiago and Rooney stories.

    Anyone able to explain something to me?

    I've been advised on here by some that Collins (WHM) is not nailed on.
    At the same time, I'm being told Turner (NOR) is nailed on.

    Collins started 29/38 last year, turner 25/38.

    As far as I can see, no new CBs have been added to West Ham defence to render Collins a risk and justify him being 4.5 while Demel, Ried and Rat are 5.0.

    If anything, is Rat arrival not reason to make O'Brien be a risk and therefore 5.0 instead of 5.5, or Demel a risk of O'Brien going to RB and therefore render Demel 4.5. Like the way Olssons arrical has made both him and Garrido 4.5, while Martin who played less games than Garrido kept 5.0, as no new RBs have signed at Norwich.

    So, why is Collins a risk? Is it simply because FPL made him 4.5? If 29/38 is a risk, surely Turner at 25/38 must be too? Unless Turner missed games while injured? (honesty cant remember), but then agaib, did Collins not miss games through injury too?

    It seems FPL have decided Tomkins is first choice now and people are treating Collins as a risk because Tomkins is 5.0. Surely that's just speculation? Surely if Collins is a risk, Turner is also at risk from Ryan Bennett? Bennett started a similar number of games to Tomkins and even then, some Tompkins games are as a DM, so Collins can still fit in with some of those?

    Any thoughts?

          He should be. Better defender than Tomkins. Obviously a new signing could change things but that's not happened yet. Based on last season which is all we have to go on, he's first choice with Reid

          Turner should start too, but i don't remember him getting injured last year. Norwich look like they have more options so i'd be more cautious about him

      1 unless you are purposefully trying to have him as a differential, coutinho not worth 9mil on the back of 3/4 good appearances imo.
      2 if RVP or aguero lights up you will be using a WC early on to fit them in due to cheap forwards
      3 i really dont like only having one keeper, you make so many more points if you can rotate home/away when needed

          You could also get De Gea and a 4.0m and play De Gea every week - I'd rather pocket the £0.5m and rotate for now I think, though I was tempted by Cech when the game was first released.

          The problem with Arsenal and Liverpool GKs at the moment are that there is a lot of doubt. If Reina moves and Szczesny is confirmed as first choice, they may become good options.
